SORRY I'M LATE

In Minneapolis today to deliver the keynote speech to the Radio Conclave meeting. I took advantage of the situation by sleeping in a bit this morning ... let's just call it a late arrival from San Francisco.

MORE ON THE AMNESTY MESS

President Bush is reporting as having said yesterday that ""Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people, and Congress' failure to act on it is a disappointment. A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn't find common ground. It didn't work."

Sorry, Mr. President, that isn't quite correct. It's immigration of the illegal, not the legal variety that is a top concern of the American people. And there was common ground in the Senate ... it's just that you and some of the proponents of amnesty wouldn't allow the Senate to act on that common ground.

What common ground? Well, search as I might, I couldn't find one single Senator who was willing to state, for the record anyway, that he or she did not want to see the border between the U.S. and Mexico secured. Well, if the Senators were unanimous in their desire to see a secure border; if they worked so hard to convince us that a secure border would result from passage of this bill, then why not act on the one area where there is actually, as you put it, common ground? Secure the border!

Now when we're talking about securing the border, we're not talking about fancy cameras and unmanned aircraft with infrared devices. We're not talking about listening posts and thousands of border patrol agents sitting in offices pushing stacks of paper. We're talking about a fence. A barrier. As a caller pointed out yesterday, the Chinese managed to build a 4000 mile-long wall 200 years before the birth of Christ. If they could do it then without one single dump truck or motorized crane, then one could imagine that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers could figure out a way to do it now. And why the Corps of Engineers? Why the Army? Because this is a defensive barrier, that's why. It would be built with the express purpose of holding back an invasion. You don't hold back invasions with cameras and pilotless drones.

The rhetoric has certainly become heated in the past few weeks, but I wonder how many ordinary American citizens the President talked to while he was busy working the phones to push this bill. We want Americans to believe in the rule of law. It can be argued that the very survival of this republic depends on its citizens accepting the idea that we are a country of law, not of mob rule, and that each and every one of us in this country is required to know and abide by those laws. Tell me, how in the hell do we foster a respect for the laws of this country when the president and high-ranking politicians from both parties bust their cans trying to not only bring about forgiveness, but to actually reward people who have been ignoring our laws for decades?

Both sides are after votes here. The Democrats most certainly were looking at the future votes of not only lawful immigrants, but of those of the illegal variety as well. Republicans may not have been looking to add votes from the Hispanic community. Rather, they may just have been looking for a way to stop the hemorrhaging. Most experts seem to believe that the Hispanic vote is most definitely going in the Democrat's direction. This is what you would expect,
especially when talking of illegal immigrants, the majority of whom don't even have a high school education.

The Republicans aren't going to grow their voting base through Hispandering. They might, though, manage to expand their voter base by appealing to the tens of millions of disaffected Americans who are sick and tired of our runaway federal government.

Instead of focusing on finding ways to legitimize 15 million criminals, why not find a way to address the concerns of those Americans who have all but given up on the election process.

The first thing to do here is come down solidly on the side of securing the U.S. borders. No ancillary issues. No extras thrown in. Build the fence. Stop the invasion. Once the flood of illegals stops the American people will be more than willing to sit back and engage in a rational and reasoned conversation dealing with the illegals who are already here.

Right now, as I've said before, the people know instinctively that if this atrocity of a bill had passed, Hispanics would continue to stream across the border for years to come completely unabated

In the search for votes (to replace lost Hispanics) Republicans might want to focus some time on real, permanent tax reform (The FairTax?), reducing government spending, encouraging individualism and personal achievement, and returning basic freedoms to the American people that have been usurped by the government.

This amnesty bill was a lemon. Now, who's for making a little lemonade?
Well, the damage is done. We can see through your pathetic attempts to keep your voting record as P.C. as possible ... considering this is one of the biggest issues in politics. Why don't you try forming a real opinion on the topic or – now here's a concept! -- listening to your constituents from the get-go. Nah, that representational democracy is so last century ... now we just want power! And we want to stay in power! For as long as possible.

One surprising vote that I must mention is Senator Voinovich. He joined the crowd of "nays" just one day after embarrassing himself on talk radio when he didn't even know which amendments to the bill had passed ... and hadn't even heard of the Fairness Doctrine. Must be nice to be a Senator. Although, Senator Sessions did point out (on the Senate floor) that talk radio hosts knew more about the amnesty bill than many Senators ... so, now I'm a know it all, folks! Between being an expert in immigration legislation and advising Georgia Senators (according to the Latino community, anyway), I might not have time for talk radio anymore! But that leads to our next topic ...

NOW PELOSI IS CHIMING IN

Yesterday Nancy Pelosi joined several other prominent Capitol Hill Democrats like John Kerry in calling for a revival of the Fairness Doctrine. She also said that a bill introduced into the House to wipe the Fairness Doctrine off the face of the map "wouldn't make it to the floor."

Then, after Pelosi's remarks, the House proceeded to pass an amendment which would prohibit the FCC from reviving the fairness doctrine. How would this happen? Cut the funds ... take away the money. It prevents FCC funds from being used to reinstate this liberal excuse for "fairness."

Yes, I am not making this up. Surrounding the current whoop-la over "fairness" on the airwaves, the House passed the amendment 309-115. It is attached to the Financial Services Appropriations bill. This is the same bill that David Obey, the democratic chair of the Appropriations Committee, tried to improperly sneak in millions of dollars in earmarks ... exactly what Democrats said they would fight this Congressional term.

The amendment was sponsored by Representative Mike Pence of Indiana. But he's not done yet. He wants to make sure – absolutely sure – that this is a permanent change. That's why he is also sponsoring the Broadcasters Freedom Act. It prohibits the FCC from making any rules, regulation or policies that would reinstate fairness quotas. It also says that the FCC and any future President can't reinstate the doctrine. Did you hear that Hillary? Blab away with as many liberals (on as many elevators) as you'd like ... but, if this bill passes, there is no way you are going to "deal" with talk radio – not without a new law.

David Obey, our protector of the earmark, responded to the House vote by saying, "This issue is much ado about nothing." Now apparently Obey hasn't been riding in any Congressional elevators in the past couple years. He hasn't heard the whispers and mounting pressure to end talk radio, which is apparently running America. No, Mr. Obey – this is a very big deal. The free flow of information to the American people is a very big deal. Freedom of the press is a big deal. OK, so our founding fathers didn't foresee broadcasting. Perhaps its time to include broadcasting in the First Amendment. Now THAT would be a big deal.

Between the defeat of the amnesty bill, the passage of this amendment, and the hope for the Broadcasters Freedom Act, there would appear to be much to celebrate. Remember, though, we still have the Senate to deal with. Let's see what Hillary, John and Ted have to say about this, then we'll talk. In the meantime, I guess the Senators better brush up on their knowledge of the Fairness Doctrine (Senator Voinovich, that means you in particular!). Then again, talk radio apparently knows more about what is going on in the Congress than its own representatives. Don't worry, we'll keep you in line and informed and in touch with the American people – you know ... those people who just happen to decide whether or not you keep your job.

HILLARYCARE

Looks like we won't have to wait for Hillary to become president. Nope. Your trusty Democratic-led Senate is working on a way, right now, to expand Hillarycare to all "poor kids." Now first, who qualifies as a "poor kid"? 71% of all American children in families of four making up to about $80,000 a year would classified as "poor." That's 400% above the poverty level. Wow ... must be nice to be an impoverished American in Hillary's world!

Because of this expanding definition of "poor," it triples the five-year cost of Hillarycare from $25 billion to $75 billion. Chump change, right? Yeah, straight from your taxes to the government, then to be spent in a system without any competitive free market pressures. Sure, that ought to work. Oh. And please remember Medicare. How much was that supposed to cost when we first heard about it? Pennies, compared to the eventual reality.

This is Hillary's "step by step" approach, folks. Slowly but surely, one "poor" child at a time, the government will begin to be the great "provider." The government has no business deciding where I will be medically treated, and by whom. I have the right to make that decision. You have the right to make that decision. This just goes to show that Hillary will stop at nothing to make sure that the government gains more power. She wants control and she will start by chipping away a private health care until Americans are crossing over to Canada to get their hips replaced ... and you know it's a sad day when Canada can do something better than the U.S. ---- besides bottle ice wine, that is.

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT - POSITIVE EMAIL!

Eric Larson writes in to say:

Last week, as I was filling a couple hours before work, I picked up your book "Somebody's Gotta Say It"(having seen you on CSPAN2)and must say I was quite impressed. I normally steer away from political conversations, not because I am apolitical, but because so few people are willing to have a dialog it seems. As you state in your book, many people like to either have their egos stroked by a like minded thinker, or they like to scream their personal opinions to those who disagree. At least, this has been my experience. As a result I have had few conversations with conservatives, or anybody with politics that fall to the right, as I am - if I must be something - fairly liberal. I only wanted to thank you for expressing so artfully the need for open dialog and an end to partisan politics, especially as a means to an end. Although I don't agree with everything you say, I found much of it easy to swallow and I will recommend you to present and future aquaintances.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

You would think that President Bush, of any politician, would maintain his hard-line stance against Islamic extremism. Then again, we can't count on Bush for much lately. Now Bush wants to "listen and learn" from these terrorists ... yeah, that's going to do us a lot of good.

Diane Feinstein on government regulation of the auto industry, "What the China situation ... shows is that these automakers ... build the automobile that the requirements for mileage state. And they don't fight it, they just do it." Charles Krauthammer's response, "Yes. That is how things work in Communist Party dictatorships."

Dick Morris thinks that the defeat of the amnesty bill is bad for Republicans in 2008. I don't know about this one Dick. This debate has really charged the conservative base. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

This is for all you government educated. The Supreme Court ruled that government school districts can't plan schools just to increase racial diversity. Just remember, when it comes to race ... the government always knows exactly how to handle it. Ok? Got it? Now go ahead and start your whining because this isn't "fair".

Rich Lowry calls the defeat of the amnesty bill a "techno-populist victory." I guess what he is saying is that you made a difference. Imagine that!

The House decided not to strip Cheney of his funds, after saying that he wasn't subject to an executive order because "he wasn't a member of the executive branch." Looks like Cheney (and the House) got it right.

Care to hear what the Mexican president thinks of the failure of the amnesty bill? Well over one tenth of his people live in the United States, so I guess he does have some claim in this debate. Yeah, that's what I thought!

What do oil and politics have to do with each other? Apparently everything ...

How's this for neighborhood friendly? Your neighbors want to build a dog kennel (oh Belinda would just love this!). You say no to the barking, yapping dogs. And to really stick it to them, you buy four mammoth donkeys to live in your backyard and make as much noise as they'd like. Now that's a pain in the ...

And speaking of dogs. Looks like Mitt Romney just lost the animal-lovers' vote. He apparently strapped his dog (in a dog carrier) to the roof of a car for a family trip. Hey, it could have been a lot worse. Have you seen what Hillary straps on her hood?

I mentioned this article before, but take a look: farm odors are the latest contributor to global warming. Belinda ... suggestion? No, I don't want to smell cow manure to determine this, and even worse – I don't want my tax dollars to employ professional farm odor environmentalist experts!
