SOCIALISTS LOSE!!!

It's certainly too early to celebrate the saving of France .. but there was some good news over the weekend. Nicolas Sarkozy has won and will be the next president of France. The margin was quite wide. Sarkozy, by the way, is a friend of the United States. He plans to try to do something about France's absurd workplace regulations, including, if you can imagine, making it easier for private businesses to fire incompetent and malingering employees.

The socialist candidate, Segolene Royal, had grandiose (is that a French word) plans to make government even bigger! She was going to increase the minimum wage -- a favorite of socialists -- and create a half-million government jobs for young people. She also planned on 120,000 units of new welfare housing per year. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

More on the show today.

BY THE WAY .. WHY DO THE FRENCH VOTE ON WEEKENDS?

How long should the voting period be in the United States?
I think the way it is now is fine
A full 24-hour period
A weekend
A full week
At least they get this one right. They have huge turnouts for elections in France because those elections are held on weekends! In the U.S. we have this odd custom of holding our elections on Tuesdays --- quite possibly the most boring day of the week.

Have you ever given any thought as to why we vote on Tuesdays? Tradition? Maybe so, but we've strayed from tradition in many other areas. So let me share with you my own personal feelings as to why we still vote on Tuesdays ... instead of weekends. Think about this and you'll appreciate the brilliance of my analysis.

Tuesday is a work day. This means that people with actual jobs have to make sometimes extraordinary arrangements to vote. The bulk of the hours during which the polls are open are work hours. If you have a job, you have a problem. No job, no problem. And just who might those without jobs favor in an election? Why, the party that makes it easier for them not to work, or the party that eases the pain of laziness to the greater degree. That would be Democrats. Those hard-working Americans with jobs might be more likely to vote for the party that encourages and enables free enterprise and lower taxes. That would traditionally be Republicans.

In short: We vote on Tuesdays because that day is better for those who favor big government. Simply put ... Democrats.

My idea? Of course I have an idea! We can still vote on Tuesdays, if that's so important to everyone, but let's open the polls for one 24 hour period. The polls open at 7:00 a.m. Eastern and close 24 hours later. We accomplish two things here. First ... pretty much everyone has a much better chance to vote. Instead of having the work day fill up 75% of the time the polls are open, those eight hours would fill only 25% of the time allotted for voting. Secondly ... since all polls would close at exactly the same time there would be little chance for the news media to screw things up with claims of victory as soon as the polls close on the east coast.

Great idea? Let's do it!

WE NEED A NEW WORD

NEAL ON TV TODAY!

Today, catch Neal on the Fox News Channel, at about 4:20ET on with Neil Cavuto.

Yesterday afternoon was a fantastic day for a ball game, so it was off to Turner Field to watch the Braves and the Dodgers. Prior to the game I was chewing the fat with some sportswriters when the subject of blacks in Major League Baseball came up. Apparently some "activists" are starting to raise hell right now because they feel that there are not enough blacks in the big leagues. Naturally I just couldn't keep quiet. I suggested that while there may not be enough - what ever would be defined as "enough" -- blacks in the major league baseball, there almost certainly weren't enough whites in the NBA.

Uh oh. Was that a racist comment? There I was with people who write for major newspapers and I come out with a comment like that. There is not a doubt in my mind that we wouldn't have to look very hard to find someone who would say my comment was racist.

Know what? We need a new word. The word "racist" has become so overused of late that it has lost virtually all of its meaning. Years ago the definition of racism was clear. To be a racist was to believe that one race was inherently or genetically superior to another. Under the traditional definition a racist statement would be a statement that alluded to or supported the concept of inherent racial superiority. Today, under the commonly accepted definition of the word, a racist statement is any negative statement made by a white person about any person not white.

Do we have racial problems that we need to address? Absolutely! These problems are nowhere near the severity of the racial problems that existed thirty or forty years ago, but they do exist and we'll all be better off if they're addressed. Any accomplished problem solver is going to tell you that before you try to solve a problem it would be a mighty good idea if you first identified it. You would think that first identifying and then solving a problem would be basic. After all, a doctor isn't going to treat a broken bone with Ben Gay, is he?

Problems categorized as racial could arise from bigotry, prejudice and racism. A bigot is a person who is intolerant of ideas or people not like himwhile being strongly partial to his own particular racial, religious or political group. A prejudiced person is someone who has formed a less-than-favorable opinion or attitude about a person or an idea before really giving the matter any though. In other words, the prejudiced person has "pre-judged" the person, the group or the situation. Funny, isn't it, how neatly "pre-judged" and "prejudiced" fit together? Then we have the racist. A white supremacist would be a racist. He believes that whites are genetically superior to virtually all other races.

Now we have virtually blended the meanings of all three words; racist, bigoted and prejudiced. People who are bigoted, prejudiced or both are now commonly called racist, even thought they harbor no feelings of racial superiority.

The fact is, we no longer have a word in our language to describe one who believes in the inherent, genetic superiority of one race over another. The word "racist" has been so overused and misused over the past 20 years that it truly has become little more than a mild reprobation of virtually any white person who has said something that causes even the slightest bit of offense in a minority, usually black, community.

So ... let's get the Webster's people on this, and throw in a few Funk and Wagnels while we're at it. Maybe Jesse "The Sloganmaster" Jackson could take some time out from blackmailing American corporations and Al Sharpton could stop trying to beat the Guinness record on lies long enough to give this worthy project a shot.

Come to think of it, wasn't it Jesse Jackson who suddenly decided some years ago that all of the problems faced by black people in America would be solved virtually overnight if we would start calling blacks "African-Americans?" OK, so he's good at coming up with cute slogans and nifty phrases. Work on this "racist" thing, Jesse! You've so bastardized the word "racist" that we need a new one.

Could you get back to me on that?

Oh ... by the way .. .you do know that I'm a racist for even bringing this up, don't you?

WHAT A WONDERFUL RELIGION

There's a horrific video making its way through the internet right now. I'm not going to link to it because it is just too terrible to watch. The video shows a 14-year-old Muslim girl being stoned to death [story only, not link to video] ... by members of her own family! Her crime? She was in love with another Muslim .. but he was from a different Muslim sect. This they call an "honor killing."

Honor killing? There is anything honorable about this?

Listen very carefully today. Let's hear how loud the cries of outrage and condemnation are from the Muslim community. Let's all have another sip on our morning coffee while we wait for the Council on American-Islamic Relations to step forward and condemn this act of Islamic barbarism. Don't wait too long. Your coffee will get cold.

GAS PRICES GOING UP

Look for Democrats to exploit the massive ignorance of the American people on this issue. Barbara Boxer is out there telling all of us how "very clear" it is that we have a government that is being run for the benefit of oil companies. Yup .. it was so "very very clear" that Moonbat Boxer didn't even take the time to explain it to us. Now if we were to press her to give us these "very very clear" reasons I have no doubt she would immediately point to oil company profits. At that point a good journalist would ask her: "Can you tell us what the profit margin, not the profit, but the profit margin was for Exxon Mobile during the last reported quarter?" Oh how I would love to see that question asked! But there's not a chance. They'll ask a Republican presidential candidate how much a gallon of milk costs. That's all part of the media game of showing us that Republicans are out of touch with the common man. But they damned sure won't ask a Democrat some basic business questions. After all, the last thing the MSM (mainstream media) wants to do is illustrate leftist ignorance when it comes to business.

Oh ... and let's get ready for the whining from the public too; spurred on, of course, by media scare stories and Democrats slamming the oil companies. Just as soon as gas goes over $3 a gallon the media will start screaming about record gas prices and the great unwashed will join right in.

How about a bit of math. Let's say you're going to drive a family of four to Walt Disney World. You live 700 miles away, so there's a 1400 mile round trip. You burn regular gasoline. As of last Friday (excuse me, but the numbers for today aren't out yet) your regular gas could have cost $3.03 per gallon. This time last year that gas would have cost you $2.92 per gallon. That's an eleven cents per gallon increase. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tells us that the average gas mileage for new vehicles sold in the United States in 1980 was 23.1 miles per gallon. It has increased since then to around 24.7 mpg, but we'll go with the 1980 figure on the assumption that the people whining the loudest about gas prices are the least likely to have a new car. See how fair I'm being here?

So ... with the 11 cents per gallon increase since last year, how much extra are you going to have to save for your trip to Disney World? You drive 1400 miles and get 23.1 miles per gallon. That means you burn 60.6 extra gallons of gas. At 11 cents per gallon that is going to increase your vacation driving cost by a whopping $6.66! (The HELL you say!)

Now .. let's imagine that gas goes up by one entire dollar from last year's prices! Oh my! Will the media be having a fun time then! Barbara Boxer would probably pass out while delivering the anti-big-oil diatribe for the ages! That means your vacation would cost you $60.60 more while you're paying $3.92 per gallon! Hint: If that $60 is going to break you, you have no business at all taking your family to Disney World. Get a Slip 'n Slide for the backyard and take the kids to DQ.

I could say some things here about drilling for oil in ANWR and building new refineries and ending all of these special blends that cause disruptions in the gas supply around this time every year. I could also say some things about supply and demand ... but that would just make me a neo-con, wingnut hate monger. So I'll just shut up now.

YOUR TAX MONEY AT WORK

Say! Can any of you tell me what exciting new programs may have aired on PBS last night?

No? Why not? Don't you watch PBS? You say you don't .. because it's generally boring? Maybe that's why nobody is talking about last night's programming.

While PBS is technically a non-profit, most of its funding comes from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting -- funded by you. The money comes out of your pockets involuntarily through state and federal grants, and voluntarily when you get suckered into donating on those rare occasions when the programming is actually non-political and entertaining.

The problem with PBS is that it is so political ... so left wing political. So big-government political. But what do you expect? What else would you expect when we have such deep government's involvement in media? We've been through this, folks. We have cited the examples of Communist nations whose first step is to control and limit media and news. Why can't we get it through our heads—we don't need the government on our television, or controlling our airwaves, or any outlet. Running the local county commission meeting on a cable channel may be tolerable, though barely, but beyond that the media should remain in private hands -- not under political control.

Example? Latino activists threw a hissy fit when a PBS Civil War series failed to include anything about their community. Boo hoo. The California legislature got involved and demanded that the footage be re-edited to include the forgotten Hispanics. If not, no future funding for PBS. Of course, the filmmakers caved. Government controlled the agenda and PBS producers quickly learned the lesson of submission.

Back in the day, PBS had a lot more power because of the limited number of choices. But now I have 800 channels to choose from and PBS is probably #799 --- unless Andre Rieu is on. It's time to end all taxpayer funding of PBS .. at every level.

BOORTZ BANNED LIST

I'm asking our winsome web mistress to develop a list of corporate and government entities who have blocked access to Nealz Nuze and Boortz.com on their internal servers. Over the weekend I heard that the Gwinnett County Schools have, let's say, "banned Boortz." Now I've sworn off reading negative email. There's just too much viciousness out there. I'm a bit weary of reading how people pray for the day I get a phone call telling me that my entire family has been killed in a car accident. I've instructed web guy to forward only positive emails to my attention. He'll be collecting the "Boortz Banned" locations, email us here and use "Boortz Banned" as the subject, and we'll figure out a way to publish the list. Now bear in mind, these businesses and government organizations have every right in the world to control Internet access for their employees ... we're just looking for clear examples of where Nealz Nuze might be blocked, but not other similar sites. Thanks.

CONGRATULATIONS TO LOCAL TV

There was a bad fire this weekend in an apartment complex here in Atlanta. So, what else is new? In what major city in this country do you not have an apartment fire on any given day? OK .. I'll answer my own "so what else is new" question. What was new this time is that I was actually watching the local TV news, a rarity for me. I guess I just wanted to see what the anchors looked at in hi def --a test I most certainly couldn't pass. I saw this story covered on two different local TV newscasts, and not once did I hear a reporter or anchor say "they lost everything they had" or "they have to start life all over again." Progress .. to be sure.

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY MONTH

In honor of May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, we'll feature a daily reminder for you to be safe on or around motorcycles. Today we'll look at a video montage illustrating why you should always wear a helmet and why hamming it up is a bad idea.
