Atlanta went to a home on Neal Street in Atlanta last evening to execute a search warrant. When they kicked the door in the only occupant of the home, a 92-year-old woman, started shooting. She hit all three police officers. One in the thigh, one in the arm and another in the shoulder. All police officers will be OK. The woman will not. She was shot and killed by the police.
I'm not blaming the cops here. Not at all. They had a valid search warrant, and they say they were at the right address. Shots were fired, three cops hit, and they returned fire. A 91-year-old woman who was so afraid of crime in her neighborhood that she had burglar bars on every door and window, is now dead.
The blame lies on this idiotic drug war we're waging. We have all the studies we need, all of the comprehensive data is in. We can do a much more effective job of reducing drug use in this country if we'll just take a portion of this money we spend for law enforcement and spend it on treatment programs. A Rand study showed that we can reduce illicit drug usage in this country a specified amount through treatment programs at about 10% of the cost of reducing drug usage by that same amount through criminalization and law enforcement.
There's just something in the American psyche that demands that drug users be punished instead of treated and rehabilitated. We think they're stupid and ignorant for getting mixed up with those drugs in the first place. And you know what? We're right? But look at the messages we send to our children every single day with cigarettes, alcohol, and an endless stream of drug ads on television and in magazines. Drug culture? You bet we have a drug culture! "Ask your doctor about Noassitol!"
GUILTY OF FLYING WHILE MUSLIM
CAIR, the Council on American-Islamic Relations has its turban in a knot over this case in Minneapolis where 6 Muslim Imams were marched off a plane after some passengers expressed concern over flying with them. Evidently some of them prayed in the terminal before they boarded the plane and then once they boarded, they fanned out and sat in different locations. CAIR, which itself has ties to terrorist organizations, publicly whined: "We are concerned that crew members, passengers and security personnel may have succumbed to fear and prejudice based on stereotyping of Muslims and Islam." Now why would they do that?
The reason is that every terrorist attack on board an airplane in oh...the last 30 years or so has been by Islamic terrorists. Deep down, the public knows that every last one of the 9/11 hijackers was a Muslim. What if the 9/11 hijackers had been marched off an airplane in handcuffs at the requests of suspicious passengers? 3,000 more people would be alive today because of it.
People know the security at airports is lax and isn't going to prevent another terrorist attack. They also know what a terrorist on an airplane looks like these days, and these 6 Imams fit that description. Are all Muslims terrorists? Absolutely not. But for the past couple decades, all terrorists are Muslims...and that's just the way it is. It's good to see more people aren't willing to die in the name of political correctness.
One more point. Ibrahim Hooper, the CAIR spokesmuslim who has been raising so much hell about this incident, once told a reporter that he would like to see the United States under Islamic Law.
Know your enemy.
THE GITMO TAPES ARE OUT
The U.S. Military has been holding tribunals at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for quite some time...it turns out since 2004. And these tribunals have been tape recorded and those recordings are being released this week due to a Freedom Of Information Act request. What do the tapes tell us?
Nothing new. Evidently some of the accused complain about their treatment at the hands of U.S. forces. According to one detainee: "We were bound by our hands and our feet and we were treated the worst treatment. For 36 hours without food, sleep, water or anything." Poor babies. The U.S. Military is so evil, isn't it? Why...we just go around the world arresting people and sending them to Cuba at random!
There is nothing new on these tapes because there is nothing new about criminals: they lie. The people who are being held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba are suspected terrorists. They have been rounded up from around the world...as well as captured on battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan. How long before Democrats start crying foul over the handling of these terrorists? Maybe the Left would like to institute and 'adopt a terrorist' program. If they're not willing to have them tried down at Gitmo, maybe they could take one home. Just an idea.
EVERYBODY NEEDS A PASSPORT
Beginning January 23, just about everybody is going to be required to have a passport, including those traveling to Mexico and Canada. No more heading over the border with just your driver's license and birth certificate for a lost weekend. Now can we just get a little border enforcement? Because nobody seems to be asking all of the illegals streaming across the border for their passport.
There will be those that protest this policy change, but really...is it going to make that much of a difference in who makes it into this country or out? Those who are smuggling illegal aliens in aren't going to show up at the border crossing with their fancy new passport. No...they're going to come in the same way they always have....right across the border at places were there is no protection. By the way...did you know miles of the U.S-Canadian border is actually unguarded? No passport needed.
We were going to get a fence built along the border with Mexico. No more. Count on the Democrats to kill that idea. The border is 2,000 miles long...and 700 miles that was recently authorized may not even get built. So all this new rule is going to do is result in long lines at the post office and lots of increased revenue for the passport office.
Oh...and will George W. Bush's amnesty program for illegals require a passport? I doubt it. READING ASSIGNMENTS
Washington D.C. seems to be getting a bit crowded these days. Not because of the influx of new Democrats elected a few weeks ago, but because of the ever-expanding list of new monuments constantly being created. Radley Balko investigates.
Rudy Giuliani is considered a strong contender for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, but those on the far right say he's too liberal on social issues. But John Podhoretz says once people find out more about Rudy, his chances for the nomination will only grow.
