HILLARY'S THREAT

Hillary can smell the Oval Office.  With the Democrat control of the congress, and a president who seems well-suited to the role of a lame duck, Hillary is feeling her oats.  She thinks the Democrat nomination is hers ... and its off to the races.

Yesterday The Liar made an interesting statement to reporters in Washington yesterday.  She said that "health care is coming back" and "it may be a bad dream for some."

Now just what does she mean by that?  Bad dream?  What kind of bad dream?

Does Hillary mean that after our government takes control of the delivery of medical services in this country that Americans will have to wait for months, even years, for elective surgery as people do in Canada and other countries with socialized medicine?  Well .. .if that's the case, Hillary is right.  That would be a bad dream.

Maybe Hillary is talking about what awaits any American who tries to use his or her own money to hire a doctor outside of the government medical scheme.  Well, under the Hillarycare proposal she concocted in 1993, if a private individual used private funds to hire a doctor to perform a medical service outside of Hillarycare, then both the doctor and the patient could be arrested and jailed.  Being jailed because you dared to hire your own doctor?  Again, Hillary is right.  That indeed would be a bad dream; not just for some, but for many.

There are many free market reforms that could be made to our health care system that would increase competition, expand availability and decrease costs ... but the problem is that they are free market reforms.  Returning free market economics to our system of medical care doesn't enhance the power of politicians, and thus it is a non-starter.  The political goal here is to make people dependent on the Imperial Federal Government for their medical care.  Once that is accomplished you can almost write the Democrat campaign commercials for them.  "Vote for Joe Republican and you're going to have to pay for your own medical care."

How do you feel about our health care system?
it's fine as is
I'd like to see less government involvement
I'd like to see more government involvement
I've been saying that socialized medicine in the United States is inevitable.  There are two basic reasons:  One, politicians want the power.  Two, individual Americans don't want the responsibility.  The great American love of freedom is now pretty much limited to freedoms not coupled to responsibility.  Americans have been taught by the political class to believe that a person's health care is the primary responsibility of either the government or that person's employer.

Hillary also had some comments about other subjects of interest, such as trimming the federal deficit.  Whenever you hear a Democrat talk about cutting the deficit, they never mean cutting spending.  They mean raising taxes to cover the "shortfall."  This is where you find out that there's no difference between modern-day Democrats and Republicans.  One taxes and spends, the other borrows and spends.

The Hildabeast also mentioned reducing dependence on foreign oil.  When a Democrat tells you this, it does not mean actually drilling for more oil here at home.  It means raising the gas tax so as to make buying as much prohibitively expensive and it means pouring government money into programs for electric cars and hydrogen fuel cells.  Those may be good ideas, but it's for the free market to decide, not the government.

Then she mentioned improving the image of the United States abroad.  This is an easy one...this means appeasing Islamic terrorists and Euro-wimps.  After all, where is our image tarnished abroad?  In third-world Islamic countries where hatred of the United States is preached daily out of the loudspeakers of mosques.  If you want to improve our image with these people, appeasement is the key.

Hillary's on the way, folks.  You don't think the Republiwimps can stop her, do you?

DECODING DEMOCRATS

You've heard, no doubt, that one of the first things Nancy Pelosi wants to get done is to pass a law allowing the federal government to negotiate with drug companies over the price of prescription drugs for various government programs.  Well, you've learned by now that politicians like to disguise their true intentions by using clever phraseology.  "Withdrawing" from Iraq becomes "redeployment."  "Spending" on government vote-buying programs becomes "investing."  Social Security taxes become "contributions."  You know the drill.  So ... what do Democrats really mean when they discuss negotiating drug prices?  Simple.  Price controls.  The Democrat goal here is to enforce price controls on pharmaceutical companies.  We'll see how well that works out for us.

LEFT NOT HAPPY WITH JOHN MURTHA

Nancy Pelosi may have miscalculated just a bit by throwing her support behind John Murtha.  Not everybody on the Left is happy with her choice for the next Democrats' House Majority Leader.  A Washington group backed by George Soros is blasting Murtha, calling him one of the 20 most corrupt members of Congress.  And then there's that naughty little event Murtha was involved in a long time ago called Abscam.

Remember that? Refresh your memory with the FBI's video. Language not safe for work. [Part 1 | Part 2]

So what has Murtha done to irritate so many on his side of the aisle?  Well, it turns out there are many things.  The one that has him tagged with the title of one of the most corrupt members of congress involves payouts to former staffers and his brother, a registered lobbyist.  The scandal goes something like this.

John Murtha is on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.  His brother is a lobbyist for several companies that have business with the government.  In 2004, a $417 billion defense bill was passed that went through John Murtha's committee, and you can guess what happened next.  It turns out that bill benefited at least 10 companies represented by Murtha's brother.  At a minimum it is a violation of House ethics rules and at a maximum is outright political corruption.  But John Murtha is no stranger to political corruption.

Remember the Abscam case?  This was the 1980 corruption case where the FBI took down a U.S. Senator, 6 members of the House and the mayor of Camden, New Jersey, among others.  Turns out John Murtha made an appearance on that famous surveillance tape.  When offered a $50,000 bribe, Murtha said "I'm not interested...at this point."  At this point?  Perhaps he was going to be interested....just not yet.  Somehow, Murtha got a pass.

So not only is John Murtha Congressman Cut And Run, he's also just a wee bit scandal-prone.  Good choice, Speaker Nancy!

MISSING VOTES

There were three votes last night in the U.S. House of Representatives.  There was only one member of congress who will not be returning next year that missed all three votes.  Only one.  And that one would be Cynthia McKinney from Georgia.  I guess Cynthia McKinney has decided that since the voters in her district told her to take a hike, she has no obligation to represent them in congress for the remainder of her term.

Question:  Do you think that Cynthia McKinney is still accepting her paychecks?

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK

So I guess this would probably be a pretty good score on a redneck driver's test.  More in the Redneck Scrap Book.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

In case you missed it in yesterday's Nuze, here's a great big bunch of resources for you if  you want to know more about Libertarian ideas.

The Doves are now running the show in Washington.  How will that work out for us?

The Democrats chief economic spokesman is starting to talk up immediate tax increases.  Note, please, that nobody is talking spending cuts. This column from the Wall Street Journal discusses some current economic statistics, and thus is beyond the understanding of the majority of the American people.

Do Libertarians ever make a difference in an election?

Frank Luntz has some suggestions as to how the Republicans can recover from their butt kicking.

And they're off!  The 2008 presidential contest is officially underway.  On the left, we have Hillary Clinton.  On the right...John McCain.  Who else will run?  Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has officially thrown his hat into the ring.

It seems British Prime Minister Tony Blair has gotten a touch of the appeasement bug...he's now saying we should work with Axis Of Evil states Iran and Syria.  Absolutely we should work with them.  And if they don't work with us, we should blow them to smithereens.  How's that for negotiating?

Notice when it comes to the media, there's no such thing as a terrorist?  Take this story..."Gunmen" kidnapped between 100 and 150 people at a Baghdad university this morning.  Evidently the press can't use the word "terrorist."  Too judgmental, you know.

Cal Thomas comes right out and says it:  the biggest winners in last week's election were the enemies of the United States.  The Democrats were definitely the favored choice of Islamic terrorists who hate America and don't want us to continue fighting the War On Terror.

Pat Buchanan, never a fan of the war in Iraq, says both parties should take responsibility
for what's going on with the war.  He says The Republicans pushed the war and the Democrats went along with it for political reasons.  So now what happens?  It would seem a "phased redeployment" is the order of the day.

Radley Balko at Reason, the Libertarian-leaning magazine, says there's hope for limited government in last week's Democratic victory.  He says it shows that voters rejected big-government conservatism, as opposed to Reaganesque smaller-government conservatism.

It's hard to believe, but Professor Mike Adams used to be a bedwetting, liberal Democrat.  So what made him change to from a leftist to a right-wing Republican?  He gives his answer in two words:  affirmative action.  Read on to find out more about one man's conversion.

David Limbaugh says the Republican Party is a complete mess right now.  So what should the GOP do to right the ship?  Limbaugh says it's time to get back to basics.  You know, the old standbys:  less government, cutting taxes, less regulation and judges who don't legislate from the bench.

Not that long ago, Republicans had it all.  Thomas Sowell points out that in 2004, the GOP was given the keys to all three branches of the federal government and now they've lost two.  Sowell says it all comes down to Republicans' betrayal of the voters on a number of key issues.

Frank Gaffney, Jr...always touted as one of the famous "neocons"...says the White House mismanaged the Iraq issue in the election.  And how did they do this?  Gaffney says they never challenged the lies of the media...like Iraq had no WMD and that the war was unnecessary.
