IT LOOKS LIKE ABC IS GOING TO CAVE

What drama!

ABC has a five-hour miniseries coming up titled "The Path to 9/11."  The first episode airs this coming Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.  This docu-drama is causing quite a stir in Washington ... and especially in the Clinton camp.

The problem, you see, is that in this movie the Clinton Administration is portrayed as treating Islamic terrorism as nothing more than a law enforcement problem.  There is one scene in the move where Intelligence officials are discussing an attempt to kill or capture Osama bin Laden.  The Clinton administration is refusing to authorize the action.  Permission denied.  The Clinton aide says that the problem is that Clinton views terrorism as largely a law enforcement problem.  The intelligence official asks "How do you win a law and orderly war?"  The aide responds "You don't."

You can sputter and spin all you want about President Bush and his handling of the war on Islamic fascism, you cannot deny that since 9/11 he has been dedicated to the cause of crushing Islamic terrorism over there before they bring it back over here.  Sounds like a good plan to me.

Similarly -- there is no way in hell that any reasonable man can argue that the Clinton administration was dedicated to crushing Islamic terrorism.  Clinton did indeed treat it like a law enforcement program.  After the first Islamic terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993 Clinton did not even bother to visit New York City to view the damage, talk to survivors and the families of those who lost their lives, or meet with NYC officials and first responders.

And what of the attack on the U.S. Cole?  This was an attack on a U.S. Navy warship.  Clinton was the Commander in Chief.  The response?  At best, lob a few cruise missiles.  That's it.  Nothing more.

So ... now the battle is joined.  ABC has this miniseries ready to run.  The producers say that it's largely based on the findings of the 9/11 Commission report as well as interviews with the people involved.  Apparently the miniseries shows Clinton to be relatively unconcerned about terrorism, and not dedicated to the cause of bringing in bin Laden.

Will  the Democrat pressure work?  My guess is that it will, at least in part.  ABC is already issuing statements to the effect that "The editing process is not yet complete."  The Los Angeles Times is reporting that changes were made in the program this week after the Clintonistas started howling.  Specifically targeted, according to the Times, was the scene where Clinton National Security Adviser Sandy Berger declines to give an order to kill bin Laden.

By the way ... this really makes you wonder just what documents Sandy Berger stole from the National Archives, doesn't it?

Democrats sent a letter to Robert Iger, the President and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, the owner of ABC.  That letter contained this interesting paragraph:

"The Communications Act of 1934 provides your network with a free broadcast license predicated on the fundamental understanding of your principle obligation to act as a trustee of the public airways in serving the public interest.  Nowhere is this public interest obligation more apparent than in the duty of broadcasters to serve the civic needs of a democracy by promoting an open and accurate discussion of political ideas and events."

Now what is this paragraph really saying?  Can you read between the lines?  Here ... let me rewrite the paragraph by adding a few words.  Perhaps it will be clearer to you.

"The Communications Act of 1934 provides your network with a free broadcast license predicated on the fundamental understanding of your principle obligation to act as a trustee of the public airways in serving the public interest.  Nowhere is this public interest obligation more apparent than in the duty of broadcasters to serve the civic needs of a democracy by promoting an open and accurate discussion of political ideas and events.  The licenses granted to the television stations you own and operate are not permanent.  They are periodically subject to renewal.  You may wish to remember this fact, and consider the probability that by the time those licenses come up for renewal the Democrats may be in control of both houses of Congress, and the wife of the man your miniseries defames may well be the President of the United States"

Get the message?

ARE THE DEMOCRATS READY TO PROTECT THIS COUNTRY, OR NOT?

A little drama is also unfolding in Washington over the National Security Agency's wiretap program.  Careful attention to this drama clearly shows that Democrats are much more consumed by their hatred of George Bush, and their desire to return to power inside the Beltway, than they are over the threat of future Islamic terrorist attacks on our country.

There is a proposal to take the 29 lawsuits that now exist against the wiretap program and have the FISA court (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act) decide whether the wiretaps were legal or not.  Now this sounds like a reasonable approach, does it not?  The lawsuits, filed by Democrats and leftist groups, claim that the wiretaps were illegal.  They file 29 different lawsuits.  Here comes a proposal to take all 29 fact situations and present them to a duly constituted court, as well as to the Justice Department,  to see if they pass muster .... and the Democrats say no.

Why do Democrats oppose this proposal?  Because they're afraid.  They're afraid that the FISA Court might actually rule that the wiretaps were absolutely legal in the first place, that no law was broken.  To the Democrats it is more important to carry on their demonization of George Bush than it is to join with the rest of this country in fighting Islamic fascism and protecting our homeland.  The return to power in Congress and the White House is Democrat job number one.  We're left to wonder where on that list they've place the defense of our country and the safety of our citizens from Islamic terrorist attack.

Yesterday ...after the Democrats succeeded in turning aside Arlen Specter's proposal to submit the 29 lawsuits to the Justice Department and the FISA court, Democrat Senate Leader Harry Reid, standing alongside Hillary Clinton, actually stood before a press conference and said that it is the Republicans who are playing politics with national security.

The Democrats don't want a court to review the 29 wiretap lawsuits because they're afraid that the courts will side with the president, and its the  Republicans who are playing politics with national security.  Who's writing this stuff for them, Larry the Cable Guy?

Then the 2008 Democrat presidential candidate makes here appearance ... none other than Hillary Clinton herself!  Hillary is there to present the great Democrat six-point plan for defending America.

Here are the six points.  My sarcastic comments follow in italics:

  1. Redeploy from Iraq.  The Democrats needed a fancy word for "withdraw."  The American people know that to withdraw from Iraq before we have accomplished our objective is to cut and run.  Hence the word "redeploy" instead of "quit and leave."
  2. Create legal terrorist surveillance and trials.  They want to create a "legal" terrorist surveillance program, though they don't want the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act court to determine whether or not the program being used currently is, in fact, legal.  Make sense to you?
  3. More money for first responders.  This is just another way of saying "send more federal taxpayer money to local governments so that they can use that money to hire new people and buy new equipment.  Special emphasis, of course, on local governments where Democrat politicians need a boost. Remember, please, that some of the first responder money already sent has been used for such purposes as purchasing a trailer so that a local first responder unit could transport their souped-up lawnmower to lawnmower races.
  4. Beef up Special Forces.  Sorry, the Bush administration is already doing that.
  5. Increase port, rail and mass transit security.  Ditto.  Bush administration is already on this task.  Perhaps not enough is being done, but it is not being ignored.
  6. More congressional oversight of  intelligence.  This simply means politicizing the intelligence function of the Executive branch of government.  Read on.

Then, after announcing their wonderful six-point plan, the Democrats actually made the point that their plan was based on more than a year of ... now, get this .... more than a year of consistent national polling data

Can you believe that?  Here we have a political party that is actually admitting that it is basing its plan to defend the United States from Islamic fascism on .... polling data!

Now maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be a better idea to base your strategy for defending America on a careful and analytical assessment of the nature of the threat, the strength of those who threaten us, and their ability to carry those threats forward?  Well, not to the Democrats!  They use polling data as the basis for their strategic defense planning!

Are they kidding us?  Is this what the Democrats mean by the sixth plank in their plan for enhancing our national security?  Their promise of more congressional oversight of intelligence must mean that they're going to pay closer attention to the polls!

Oh ... I feel so much safer already.

PLAME AFFAIR OFFICIALLY OVER

Now that former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has officially come out and said he was the one who outed Valerie Plame to Robert Novak, the Valerie Plame (non) affair has come to a close.  And true to form, the mainstream media isn't making much of the revelation.  However, will we hear from the following people that they were wrong?

Democrats who accused Karl Rove and various members of the Bush Administration of treason.  Will they admit they were wrong?

Will Joe Wilson finally be exposed as the fraud that he is?  What about Wilson's fantasies that Karl Rove be marched out of the White House in handcuffs?  Will the media call out Joe Wilson?  Nope.

And here's the big one:  is Patrick Fitzgerald going to be held accountable for the millions of dollars spent investigating a "crime" that never took place?  Will he admit he continued looking for something to indict after it became clear no crime was committed?  Doubtful.

And then there's the media.  From reports that it was actually George Bush that leaked the name to others that said Dick Cheney did it, they were all wrong.  They never knew what they were talking about.  They made it all up...every last bit of it.  And why?  Because it served their Bush-bashing agenda.

The next thing to happen?  Watch for the charges against Scooter Libby to be quietly dropped.

Oh .. and there's one more thing that isn't being reported.  Valerie Plame wasn't a covert agent when her name was leaked.  Wasn't then, and hadn't been for about five years.  No crime was committed.

THE LATEST MESSAGE FROM ISLAM

The world's Al-Qaeda leaders have been busy this week.  We've had a videotaped message from the new Al-Qaeda boss in Iraq, urging every one of his  followers to kill at least one American in the next 15 days.  He urges his fellow Muslims to do it in any way possible:  "I urge you not to throw down your weapon or give yourself or the enemy a rest until each one of you kills at least one American in a period not exceeding 15 days, with a sniper bullet or explosive device or suicide car bomb, whatever the battle requires."

Golly!  He's not being very nice, is he?

Then we have this tape that shows Osama Bin Laden meeting with at least some of the 9/11 hijackers in the mountains of Afghanistan.  On the tape, Osama is seen wishing the 9/11 hijackers well, saying "I ask you to pray for them and to ask God to make them successful, aim their shots well, set their feet strong and strengthen their hearts."  Ahh yes...the peaceful religion of Islam strikes again.

With all of this in mind, it will be interesting to see how the national security issue plays in the voting booth in November.  Will people remember that we are fighting a War On Terror...a war against Islamic terrorism...or will they give in and install a pro-appeasement Democratic majority instead?  Iraq may be a mess, but putting the gave in Nancy Pelosi's hand will be the second greatest thing that ever happened to Osama Bin Laden.

At the end of the day, it's still business as usual in the terrorism world.  Kill the infidels.  And so on.

Dick Morris says the Clinton Administration's attacks on the new ABC 9/11 movie are outrageous.  He says Bill Clinton did in fact prevent the capture of Bin Laden on a number of occasions and the 9/11 Commission report backs that up.

Liberal columnist David Broder says Newsweek and others owe Karl Rove an apology
for accusing him of being the one that leaked Valerie Plame's name.  Hopefully Rove isn't holding his breath for an apology, because he'll be waiting a long time.

Republicans in the House have officially shot down the Senate immigration bill that would have granted amnesty to millions of illegal aliens already in this country.  It's about time...because it was looking like something like this might pass.

Charles Krauthammer is sounding the alarm over the situation in Iraq.  He says the country is in the middle of a civil war, but it's one we can still win.  But the Iraqis have to do a few things, otherwise we may as well fold up and roll out.

Byron York wants to know why Richard Armitage waited all the way until now to tell the world that he was the leaker in the Valerie Plame case, after letting several members of the Bush Administration twist in the wind for so long.

The accepted truth is that Hillary Clinton will easily win the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination but is unelectable in the general election.  Not so fast, says Dick Morris...who says people could be wrong on both counts.

James Pinkerton sizes up the current situation the GOP faces with voters regarding national security.  He says it all comes down to Iraq and President Bush's stand on the issue is not helping things.

As members of Congress file in following their summer vacation and with the stretch drive to the midterm elections on two months, Ed Feulner offers some suggestions for the congressional agenda.  The first thing they should worry about:  national security.

With the recent development that Iraqis are taking over the Army in their country, David Limbaugh says it's time for Democrats to stop betting on Iraq as their only issue.  In fact, the more things go well there, the less Democrats have to talk about this November.

Mona Charen sees things turning around for President Bush.  She's watched his recent speeches where he's come out swinging against critics of the War On Terror and says he's back in the game.
