FairTax Rally 5/24
Sit Front Row at the Rally!

Yesterday we got the first numbers for sales of the soft cover edition of The FairTax Book.  We debuted as No. 3!  Now ... a little historical perspective.  In the 1950's Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Weisel's book "Night" debuted as No 1. on the New York Times paperback list.  Then in 1966 Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" debuted as No. 2.  Now, in 2006, The FairTax Book debuts as No. 3!  This is the highest first week for a paperback in 40 years!

The message to the political class here is clear.  This FairTax idea has legs.  It has captured the imagination of a huge segment of the American population.  Virtually every single day of every single week there are published letters to the editors of American newspapers from readers pushing the FairTax idea and asking for action.  Many politicians are trying to ignore this tax reform idea simply because it transfers much too much power from the political class to the people.  It's up to the people to keep the heat on.  The FairTax Book is on the shelves at your local book store right now.  Go buy a few and help spread the word!

FAIRTAX RALLY - WILL YOU BE THERE?

Here's the deal folks. If we can get some sort of indication as to how many people are really going to come to the FairTax Rally May 24th, we may be able to upgrade to a larger venue. So, if you are going to be there, RSVP here. It's not for nuthin'. At the rally, 5 of these people will be upgraded to the front row! Don't worry. You don't HAVE to RSVP. You're welcome if you do and welcome if you don't. It'd just help us if you did.

THINKING ABOUT THE MEXICAN INVASION A BIT MORE

OK ... working off the premise that I never have an original thought ... let me share something that occurred to me last night whilst I was listening to a few minutes of the Michael Savage show.  It is truly perplexing to try to figure out just why our government won't respond to the Mexican invasion.  Eight out of ten Americans want the border closed ... yet the politicians who are supposed to be listening to us do absolutely nothing.

Twenty-five million illegals have crossed the border from Mexico into the United States since 1990, and the only actions our elected officials have taken is to legitimize about 13 million of these criminals through various amnesty programs.  Nothing else.

Just yesterday the House Judiciary Committee, which is under the control of Republicans by the way, rejected an effort to end the a requirement for bilingual ballots in many states.  You're supposed to be a citizen to vote, and if you aren't a natural born citizen you must pass an English proficiency test to become one.  So, why the need for bilingual ballots?  Could it possibly be because these politicians know, and quietly support the fact, that people who speak Spanish and who are not citizens regularly vote in this country?

Also just yesterday we learned of reports that the U.S. Border Patrol, under the control of the Executive Branch of government, is informing the Mexican government as to the location of the Minutemen boarder watch group.  Although our government says that the report is "inaccurate," the locations of those Minutemen activities do show up on a Mexican website maintained by the Mexican government.  Minutemen leaders have charged that Mexican troop transports cross our borders with Mexico regularly carrying loads of illegals.  How can we be surprised by this considering the fact that Mexican president Vicente Fox refers to these illegals as "heroes." The Mexican Army helping illegals by carrying them across the border?   Now you tell me that this isn't an invasion.

So ... why absolutely nothing from our government?  Why, in the name of all common sense, haven't the borders been shut down?  Could it possibly be that the Mexican invasion is actually welcomed by our politicians?

How could that be?  Well ... I'm not what you would call a conspiracy nut,  but let me just drive something into the parking lot here to see if it dents any fenders.  I'm going to connect our government's apparent support for the Mexican invasion with government education.  A stretch?  You figure that one out for yourself.

It is clear -- you can't argue with me on this one -- that our system of government education has produced a population that has limited, at best, knowledge of our country's history and of our system of government and how it is supposed to operate.  The average male citizen of any state would be more likely to know the names of the head football coaches of the two largest colleges or universities in that state than he would the name of that state's two senators.  Most people -- and we're talking 90% plus -- of the people in this country could not name their two senators, their congressman, and the person who represents them in both houses of their state legislature.  Americans, thanks to state-controlled education and with no small amount of help from the media, actually believe that America is supposed to be a democracy, and don't understand the danger of that form of government.  We're focused on sports and entertainment celebrities while we ignore the very people who can actually have a profound impact on how we live our lives.  Is this by accident?

Allow me to propose to you that this is entirely by design.  Politicians drunk on political power, prestige and perks are well-served by an ignorant electorate.  They can buy their way into office election after election by offering the government as a replacement for personal responsibility and nifty little spending projects (pork) back at home.  The more informed the people are, the greater their understanding of just what type of government we're supposed to have and how it is supposed to work, the more precarious the hold the politician has on power.

So ... accepting the premise that politicians actually benefit from an ignorant and ill-informed body politic, why would they not seek ways to further dilute the level of knowledge and awareness in the voters?  And what better way than to enable a flood of millions upon millions of "immigrants"  who know little about our form of government and show little inclination to learn?  Oh, you say they can't vote?  Tell that to Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez of Southern California.  Ms. Sanchez was elected on the strength of votes from non-citizen Hispanics in Orange County in 1996.  An attempt by the Republicans to investigate that election was denounced by Democrats as "racist" and the investigations stopped.  Remember ... there are active movements in many areas heavily populated with non-citizen Latinos, most of which are here illegally, to allow them to vote in local elections.

Eight out of ten Americans want the borders closed.  Nothing is being done.  There has to be a reason.

"TAX RELIEF" PASSES HOUSE

Do you generally have capital gains, dividends or pay the alternative minimum tax?
Yes
No
How about this...actual legislation out of Washington that puts more money in your pocket, instead of taking money out of it?  What's next...the passing of the FairTax?  We can all dream, can't we?  Well, let's take a look at just what these latest rounds of tax cuts are, and what they aren't.

The tax cuts, which passed the House 244-185, are headed to the Senate where they are expected to pass easily, then the bill will be signed by the president, perhaps as early as today.  The changes to the tax code in the bill include:
  • The amount of relief is actually $70 billion over 5 years.  That's an average of $14 billion a year.  A lot of money to be sure, but in a land of 300 million people and a 3 trillion budget, it's a drop in the bucket.

  • The bill extends the 15% rate on capital gains and dividends...for another two years.  Yawn.  Why not eliminate the tax on capital gains and dividends entirely?  The FairTax would do just that.

  • It extends for one more year changes in the alternative minimum tax.....the tax designed to tax people even if they don't owe anything....to help out some upper middle class taxpayers.  Again, why not get rid of it entirely?  The FairTax would do just that.
It makes for great headlines, but this bill is nothing more than another grab bag of tax breaks handed out by politicians in search of votes.  If you want real tax reform, how about getting rid of the IRS and the income tax entirely?  With the FairTax, the only thing Congress would have to debate was the actual rate.  But they're not going to give up that power easily.

DEMOCRATS FLYING HIGH

By any measure, the polls show Democrats should pick up some seats this fall in the House and Senate....perhaps enough to take control of those institutions. A CNN poll out yesterday puts Democrats at a 14-point lead over the Republicans.  Very interesting.  There's only one problem.

First of all, the elections are six months away.  Just like polls that showed The Poodle beating George W. Bush two years ago, things can change.  It's a long way to November.  Second, Democrats can't get their act together.  What do they stand for?

What's their solution?  Raise the minimum wage?  Most people earn far more than the minimum wage.  Cut and run in Iraq?  Most people oppose that. The problem is the left has no agenda....except to investigate the Bush Administration.  Now that's some agenda!

Perhaps by November, people will realize that the Democratic Party can't lower their gas prices, bring all the troops home from Iraq and fix illegal immigration any more than the GOP can.  There is one thing you can count on the Democrats to do.  And that is to completely implode before the midterm elections.

ALBRIGHT SAYS TALK TO IRAN

Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright has a not-so-bright idea of what to do about Iran.  She says we should open up direct talks with Tehran about their nuclear ambitions.  Says the former secretary of state in the Clinton Administration: "The last thing we need is to invade another country."  Her solution: somebody at the White House should give a speech in response to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's rambling 18-page anti-US diatribe.  Yeah..that's the ticket...not.

But you have to consider the source.  This is the same secretary of state who thought it would be a good idea to go meet and talk directly with North Korean President Kim Jong-Il.  She went over there, met with him...and he agreed to not pursue a nuclear weapon in exchange for some nuclear reactors used only for power and fuel oil.  The end result: North Korea immediately violated the agreement and went ahead with their nuclear weapons program anyway.

Your way has been tried before, Secretary Albright and we were played for suckers. There is nothing to talk about with Iran as long as they talk about wiping Israel off the map and as long as they continue to pursue a nuclear weapon.

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK

Seems like this would be a more appropriate announcement for a boy. Maybe someone needs to make "It's A Girl" Moonpies. More in the Redneck Scrap Book.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

By popular demand, daffynitions, including the one Neal wouldn't read on the air, ignoranus.

An amusing look at johns from around the world.

Will the Republican Party finally get a backbone and do something about illegal immigration?  Thomas Sowell says don't bet on it....at least if the Senate Republicans are any guide.

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio's posse fanned out across his county yesterday
to start bringing in the illegals.  Already the pro-illegal alien forces are complaining.  Too bad.

Did you know there is one government agency that actually makes a profit?  The U.S. Mint....where by the way, it now costs more to make a penny and a nickel than they're worth.

Lou Dobbs' ranting and raving about illegal immigration seems to have been good for business.  The CNN anchor's ratings are up.  In fact, a 46% increase, year over year.  Not bad.

Vladimir Putin is rattling his saber once again.
He made a not-so-veiled threat against the United States to start up the arms race again.  I don't think Pooty-Poot realizes that we would bury him, just like we did Gorbachev.  But it probably made him feel better to say it.

So supposedly the Democrats are about to cash in this fall's elections...and can expect big victories.  Why is it then that they can't agree on even the direction of their party?  For a party supposedly poised for victory, they're in total disarray.

Why are there all these socialist dictators rising to power in South America?  Victor Davis Hanson says it all comes down to government control of oil and gas reserves.  They're able to buy their way to power.

President Bush's poll numbers are in the toilet...and his critics are writing him off.  What should he do to turn things around?  John Hinderaker over at Powerline offers some free advice.

How can Republicans win elections this fall?  Dick Morris, the man that did the impossible 10 years ago and got Bill Clinton re-elected, says the solution is simple: Republicans have to run like Democrats.

Ann Coulter has her own ideas about what conservatives need to do to be victorious
....and as usual, they're not like everybody else's ideas.  Entertaining as always.

Now that's one big catfish!
