HERE IN ATLANTA ...

We're watching the trial of former mayor Bill Campbell on charges of corruption, including accepting bribes.  Campbell, you will recall, is the Mayor who turned Atlanta into a grotesque third-world flea market for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games.  He leased Atlanta's streets to some character who used to do his campaign t-shirts.  We lost count some time ago of the number of Campbell associates who have already gone to jail on corruption charges, but Campbell, of course, is completely innocent.  He's being pursued for no reason other than the fact that he was a powerful black politician.  Sweet, isn't it?  Nice to have a built-in defense when you're caught with your hand in the cookie jar.  We may well have another OJ Simpson trial in the making here.  The evidence will prove guilt, but the jury will play race.

THE WONDERFUL, PEACEFUL RELIGION OF ISLAM

Islamic terrorists are holding a young American girl, a reporter for the Christian Science Monitor.  They're demanding that the United States release all female prisoners from Iraqi prisons or they'll kill the girl.  I've been listening to reports on television of this kidnapping.  Not once have I heard any reporter identify the kidnappers as Muslims.  We can't do that, you know, because everyone in the world knows that Islam is a religion of peace.

NEW ORLEANS MAYOR RAY NAGIN

Now Nagin is apologizing for his "chocolate city" and "God is punishing America" remarks.  Why?  Well, because he made those remarks to a largely black audience, and didn't expect they would become so widely repeated and thus, controversial.  If those remarks had remained in the black community he wouldn't be spouting mea culpas right now.  You can't really blame Nagin for his dream though.  After all, there's an election coming up.  By the way, Nagin used to work for an affiliate of the company that owns my flagship radio station.  He was a well-regarded executive, a professed Republican, who made quite a few bucks in the cable television industry.  I'm told that when Nagin was working in corporate America you would never hear him use such phrases as "I ain't got no ... " and "We don't got no.... "  There must be something in the New Orleans water.  Surely this man wouldn't pander to any constituency by debasing his own language.

OREGON'S DOCTOR-ASSISTED SUICIDE LAW

The Supreme Court of the United States has upheld an Oregon law that allows doctors to help terminally ill patients die.  Good.  But I have a question.  As long as you can buy a bottle of aspirin in any convenience store, why do you need to go to a doctor for help?  I know, insensitive ... but a valid question nonetheless.

MORE ON STOSSEL'S REPORT "STUPID IN AMERICA"

God Bless John Stossel.  His "Stupid in America" report on ABC's 20/20 last Friday night was truly impressive.  Not only did he clearly show just how bad America's government schools really are, but he cited the principal reason:  Government schools are a government monopoly controlled by unions.  There is no competition.

Now Stossel and ABC are getting a good bit of hate mail.  No surprise there.  The National Education Association (NEA) is warning its members that John Stossel has "a documented history of blatant antagonism toward public [government] schools."  Stossel has written a response to the hate mail, and to the NEA.  Here's your link.  It's a good read ... especially for those of you who react positively to the schools demands for more money.

I'm not saying this to be inflammatory, or to stir the puddin'.  I'm saying it because I think it to be true.  There is no entity in the United States that presents a greater danger to the future of our country than the NEA and other teacher's unions.  Not far behind would be the parents in this country who just don't realize, or don't want to realize, what a hideous and horrible job these government schools are doing.

HILLARY'S PLANTATION

The uproar continues today over the comments made by New York Senator Hillary Clinton at a Martin Luther King Day event on Monday.  Or does it?  Here is what she said:

"When you look at the way the House of Representatives has been run, it has been run like a plantation, and you know what I'm talking about."

Oh really? A plantation!  You don't say.  And what does the line "and you know what I'm talking about" mean?  Does she mean the Republicans in the House are the masters and the Democrats the slaves?  Maybe she means that black elected officials are considered second class in the House.  We all know what's behind the comments ... racial pandering.  The Hildabeast is using racial code words, racially inflammatory words, to create and promote the image of Republicans as anti-black.

Perhaps the real story is the media coverage, or the lack thereof.  Right now, if you take a cursory glance of the mainstream media, Hillary's remarks are receiving very little coverage.  Now imagine if Bill Frist, Trent Lott, Dennis Hastert or Tom DeLay had said it. The media would be demanding their resignation.

So Hillary makes racist remarks...and the leftist press punches her pass.  Biased, liberal media? You bet.

Hostage negotiation Taiwanese style. How do you think this will end? Hint: not so well for the dirtbag.

TED KENNEDY QUITS CLUB

Following criticism he received over his membership in an all-male club at Harvard (despite his criticizing Supreme Court Nominee Samuel Alito for once belonging to another club,) Massachusetts Senator Teddy Kennedy has renounced his 50-year membership in the Owl Club.  He calls it "a mistake to continue being affiliated."

This after the Senator from Chappaquiddick scolded Alito, saying his "affiliation with an organization that fought the admission of women into Princeton calls into question his appreciation for the need for full equality in this country."  And just what has the Owl Club done?  Well..let's see.  They were kicked off the Harvard campus in 1984 for refusing to admit women.

Kennedy's excuse is the same as Alito's....it was something he belonged to while he as at school, but a club he has since abandoned.   Sorry..not good enough.  If you hold Kennedy to Kennedy's standard...then he's not fit for public office!  Oh, and by the way, Kennedy still pays his dues to The Owl Club.  So much for it just being something he belonged to in college.  If that's so, then why would be still be paying them money and keeping up his membership?

Once again...typical Democratic hypocrisy.  Do as I say, not as I do.

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK

Keeping with the water theme, how 'bout that seaplane! More in the Redneck Scrap Book.

Muslim clerics debate what sexual practices are acceptible

Michelle Malkin looks at Hillary Clinton's "plantation" comments and says the demagogues come out on Martin Luther King Day.  She says the left calls it "minority outreach."

This is interesting...James Carville says Hillary Clinton may run for president in 2008....but don't bet the farm on it.  He also says the Democratic party has a disease that has been seriously misdiagnosed.

So much for filibustering Samuel Alito....Democratic Senator Ben Nelson has come out in favor of Alito's nomination.  The Democrats don't seem to be able to stop George Bush's nominees, despite his supposedly being vulnerable.

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has apologized for his 'Chocolate City' remarks.  He said "I need to be more sensitive and more aware of what I'm saying."  No kidding...then again, we do enjoy the entertainment value.

According to the head of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, disrupting Iran's oil supply to the world market would drive the price way up.  Even though we don't import Iranian oil, we buy on the same world market.  So we're supposed to just let the mullahs get their nukes, right? Uh..no.

Finally...the government has figured out how to get soldiers to re-enlist: money.  Active duty soldiers could get $90,000 for re-upping.  Not bad.  That should improve recruiting.

So what does Dr. Walter E. Williams think of the scandal surrounding former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff?  Not much....he says money in politics is not the main problem.  Don't miss this one.

Former Iraq Administrator Paul Bremer, who is currently selling a book, says the search for WMD in Iraq took attention away from the mounting insurgency.  He says intelligence resources were wasted looking for the weapons.  He was there.

Laura Bush says she'd love to see Condoleezza Rice run for president.  Dick Morris says there's no way she would have said that without it being cleared by the president first.
