THE END OF SELF-SUFFICIENCY Since I'm a talk show host I feel it's my responsibility to find things to worry about. OK .. so maybe it's things to gripe about. Call it what you will, but I spend a good bit of time observing the passing scene trying to see trends that might be worthy of attention or discussion on the show. That brings me to Katrina, Wilma and Philadelphia. Those are just a few examples of a trend that's been evident for decades, but seems to be accelerating to dangerous levels in recent years ... the movement toward more and more dependency on government and the end of self-sufficiency. It wasn't all that surprising in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to see so many of Katrina's victims demanding increased levels of response from government. Many of these Katrina victims have been relying on government for their entire lives. New Orleans had one of the highest levels of citizens on welfare in the country. These are people who have squandered their American birthright to become little more than parasites-with-rights. Now they've been scattered to the four corners, and their demands for more and more government attention haven't abated. About ten days ago I told you of a story in the local paper of one Atlanta evacuee named Rolanda. She was living in a free hotel room with her baby and her boyfriend (no word on whether or not the boyfriend was also the babydaddy). All this woman was concerned about was finding a way to continue her free ride. The story was several thousand words long, and not one single reference to the poor, poor pitiful Rolanda looking for work! Then came Wilma. This was one slow-moving hurricane. It was first estimated to reach Florida on a Saturday. It arrived three days late, and still people weren't ready. As soon as Wilma passed we heard people in South Florida whining and complaining about the lack of government assistance. These people did little or nothing to prepare. They didn't stock up on water or food. They didn't even fill their cars with gas. Then, after the hurricane came through, they started complaining. Where's my government water? Where's my government food? Where's my government gas? I want price controls! I want more government! Where does Philadelphia come in here? Transit workers are on strike in Philly. They don't want to pay 5% of the cost of their own health care. As I wrote yesterday, health care is someone else's responsibility, not theirs! Take a look at your local newspaper today ... a close look. Read every story. See how many stories feature people looking to the government for a solution to some personal difficulty. Compare the number of those stories to the number of stories of people who actually accept responsibility for their own lives and use their own talents to solve their own problems. Then you call the program and tell me you don't see a problem with self-sufficiency in this country. And the politicians smile. TURNING THE HEAT UP ON TALK RADIO I've been telling you for some time now that the left is going to try to find a way to shut down talk radio in the months leading up to the 2008 presidential election. The Democrats know that they can by and large control the mainstream media. I think that it's fair to say that well over 90% of the mainstream journalists who will be covering the next presidential contest will be hoping that Hillary wins. These are people who are not likely to initiate any reporting on Hillary's corrupt past. Examples? Fine. For starters, here are some of the stories that the mainstream press won't address in a Hillary presidential run.- Hillary's disdain for the common man.
- Hillary's obstruction over the Rose Law Firm billing records.
- Hillary's drafting of the Casa Grande documents, documents used in a scheme that cost the American taxpayers millions.
- Hillary's controlled campaign appearances.
- Hillary's phony "listening tours."
- Hillary; socialist or not?
- Revisiting Hillary Care
- The Clinton pardons
And that's just for starters. The point here is that while the mainstream media can be counted on to ignore those stories, and more, it will not be the same for talk radio, and the left knows it. I don't know when the effort to shut us down will come, I only know that it is a virtual certainty. By the way ... something for you to notice. When the mainstream media addresses talk radio you will always hear Air America referred to as "liberal" or "progressive" (retch) talk radio. If the radio show isn't left-leaning it will be referred to as "right-wing" talk radio, never "conservative" talk radio. Just a little observation. SLOPPY WHAT?
CBS correspondent John Roberts has finally apologized for his language in yesterday's press "gaggle" at the White House. After Bush's nomination of Samuel Alito Roberts asked White House press spokesman Scott McClelland: "So, Scott, you said that -- or the President said, repeatedly, that Harriet Miers was the best person for the job. So does that mean that Alito is sloppy seconds, or what?" For those of you who don't know what the phrase "sloppy seconds" means, we take you to the United Kingdom's A Dictionary of Slang: "Sloppy Seconds: Noun: "A subsequent indulgence in an activity by a second person involving an exchange of bodily fluids. This may involve the sharing of drink, or more often it applies to a sexual nature. E.g. 'I'm not having sloppy seconds, I want to shag (have intercourse with) her first.'" Nice talk, huh? LET THE BATTLE BEGIN
So now it's on....President Bush has nominated Federal District Court Judge Samuel Alito to replace the retiring liberal Sandra Day O'Connor. Alito is evidently much more conservative...along the lines of Justices Scalia or Thomas. Good. This is exactly what we need.
For a few reasons. The Democrats need to be drawn out into the open and exposed for who they are. Leftist, liberal, judicial activists who don't want to cede control of their only power center they have left...the Supreme Court. You see, Alito is what they call a constructionist, somebody that believes in interpreting the United States Constitution exactly as it is written, and not legislating from the bench. This upsets those on the left like Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer and Patrick Leahy who think the Constitution is a "living document." They realize that with the retiring of O'Connor, a lot more decisions will not go their way if Alito takes that seat.
The media and the left will also try and cast this nomination into a debate about abortion. Don't take the bait. Abortion will never be made illegal throughout the United States...ever. If Roe vs. Wade were overturned tomorrow, all 50 states would immediately take over with their own laws. The vast majority of the American people are pro-choice, so that issue is really settled. Alito's nomination has nothing to do with abortion.
It's all about Democrats realizing that they will no longer control anything...not the White House, the House, the Senate nor the Supreme Court. Since lifetime appointments tend to last a long time...they're not going to give up without a fight. We'll see just how ridiculous they look doing it.
JOE WILSON SPOUTS OFF
Former ambassador, Bush hater and husband of Valerie Plame, media whore Joe Wilson is weighing in on the indictment of Scooter Libby. If you remember, Wilson was the one who lied about who sent him to Niger to investigate whether or not Saddam Hussein sought to buy yellowcake uranium there. He then wrote the op-ed in the New York Times bashing the Bush administration.
Wilson just isn't satisfied that Scooter Libby was the only one indicted. No sirree. He's still clinging to the false notion that somebody outed his wife, when nothing of the sort took place. Speaking to Wolf Blitzer, he said "And I think that Karl Rove should be fired. I think that this idea that you can, with impunity, call journalists and leak national security information is repugnant." Do tell. There's only one problem.
First of all, it happens all the time. This isn't unique to Rove, Libby or anyone in the Bush administration. Leaking has been going on in Washington forever. Second, his wife wasn't a covert agent. There are indications that other people knew, which would seem to be confirmed by the fact that Fitzgerald didn't indict anyone for leaking her name.
And besides...isn't it interesting that Joe Wilson is getting a complete pass in all of this? The media is handling him with kid gloves, lobbing him softball questions, pretending that his intentions are entirely pure and showcasing him as the victim. The fact is that Joe Wilson is pushing a book and is using his wife's imagined "outing" as his promotional tool. Once he wrote an op-ed bashing the administration, he publicized himself and by extension, his wife making them both fair game.
And now he wants Rove fired. Perhaps Mr. Wilson should mind his own business.

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK Today we'll take a break from pictures. Not sure if you're a redneck? Here are 25 ways to tell if you're a redneck. More in the Redneck Scrap Book. READING ASSIGNMENTS
In what has to be a first, 'Hardball' host Chris Matthews is criticizing the Democrats for circulating a memo about Samuel Alito's ethnicity. There's a first time for everything!
That crazy chairman of the DNC, Howard Dean, says Patrick Fitzgerald should indict Dick Cheney. Is this the best they can do? The Democratic Party doesn't seem to exactly be going places these days with The Screamer at the helm.
New York Senator Chuck Schumer made some bizarre comparison between Rosa Parks and new Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito. Must be the sunlight deprivation...you know, being in Hillary Clinton's shadow and all.
The nomination of Alito begins a serious debate about the the Constitution and it's role in the courts these days. George Will says finally George Bush has kicked off the real debate and the Democrats don't have much to stand on.
Thomas Sowell has a good name for the indictment of Scooter Libby. He calls it the "fishing license" indictment, so named because special prosecutors get unlimited licenses to go fishing. Sowell argues that the process is flawed.
October was supposed to be a total meltdown for the Bush administration. Iraq, Katrina, gas prices...Scooter Libby being indicted. But Bill Kristol argues that it's really the left who had a bad October.
The indictment of Scooter Libby may put Mr. Libby in jeopardy, but David Limbaugh says it doesn't put the GOP or the administration in much political jeopardy.
Gas prices are actually dropping, and the media is barely mentioning it. Why is that? Because doing so would benefit George Bush, and we can't have that. Jay Bryant reports.
Reporters, being the vultures that they are, descended upon the home of Samuel Alito's 90-year-old mother and asked her about his views on abortion.
Democrats may or may not decide to filibuster Alito's nomination, but Terry Eastland argues that he deserves an up or down vote. Whether or not he gets it remains to be seen. Governments never tire of creating new ways to separate citizens from their money. Now they've come up with something interesting in New Hampshire. When they appraise your property for tax purposes they have a separate entry for your view. The better your view, the more taxes you pay. What's next? You pay more income taxes if your wife is a knockout? |
