NEW SUPREME

Wouldn't it be nice if more people were interested in Harriet Miers' opinions on the 2nd Amendment? Let this abortion thing go, folks. No matter what happens to Roe v. Wade, abortion will never be illegal in this country again. Never. Count on it. Find another battle to join. By the way, the term should not be "pro-life." It's either anti-choice or anti-abortion.

IF A REPUBLICAN WERE DOING THIS TO A DEMOCRAT

The charges against Tom Delay are...
trumped up and part of a witch hunt by democrats.
completely warranted. He's as crooked as the day is long.
a little of option 1 and a little of option 2.
Oh ... the howls of anguish you would hear from the media.

Here's the story. When Travis County prosecutor Ronnie Earle got that first indictment against Tom Delay he made a bit of a mistake. He indicted Delay for a crime that did not exist. The law that would have made Delay's alleged activities a crime was not passed until a year or so after Delay's actions! For those of you who attended government schools, this would be an ex post facto law, and is unconstitutional.

So, when Earle figured out that he had mightily screwed up he rushed back to a brand new grand jury and managed to get yet another indictment! This time he used the very same fact situation to get an indictment -- this time for money laundering. Now, a judicious mind might ask if the fact situation led to an indictment for money laundering why didn't he go after that in the first place?

Guilty? Don't know. If he is, remove him from office and flog him. One thing I do know however, if this were a Republican prosecutor and a Democrat majority leader the media would be howling with outrage.

IF THEY DON'T PAY IT BACK ... PROSECUTE THEM

FEMA is asking Floridians to return about $30 million in payments they got from the federal agency after last year's hurricanes. Most of the $30 million is money that Floridians received or kept after their insurance companies paid them for the same claims. Federal law says that FEMA cannot make payments that duplicate insurance payouts. Many of the people who received these duplicate payments will balk at paying. If they happen to be minorities they'll start screaming racism. Advocates for the poor, poor pitiful poor will start screaming about the terrible burden of having to pay back all of these ill-gotten gains. The solution? Prosecute some of these scammers ... slam one or two in jail. Watch the money start pouring in.

A $500,000 ALASKAN KING SALMON -- AND GUESS WHO PAID FOR IT?

You've heard about this one, haven't you? The taxpayers of the United States have forked over $500,000 to paint a giant Alaskan King Salmon on the side of an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737. This money came from a $20 million grant of taxpayer's money to a marketing board in Alaska to promote Alaskan fish. The money was requested by Alaska's Republican Senator Ted Stephens. You might be interested in knowing that Ted Stephen's son is the chairman of the board of the marketing board that got the money and spent it on this fish painting.

If the average tax burden in this country is $5000 per household (and that's just a guess) then this is the total federal tax payments of about 100 American households. Every one of these households has needs. Every one of these households has dreams. Senator Ted Stephens has essentially told these households -- every one of them -- that he believes that it was more important for the federal government to seize their $5000 and spend it painting a fish on an airplane than it was for them to use it for medical expenses, education, job training, to pay off bills, to pay the down payment on a new home, or just to enjoy a nice family vacation. This is totally and completely unconscionable. It should be punishable as a crime. Remember, please, that embattled House Majority Leader Tom Delay said that there is no fat in the federal budget. So ... he doesn't think that money appropriated to paint a fish on an airplane is fat?

Just how long are we going to let these people in congress get away with these outrages? How many similar spending measures don't we know about?

FEMA BANS GUNS

Here's an intelligent ruling from that fine government organization FEMA, also known as the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The ruling in question revolves around the Phoenix, Arizona Fire Department's search and rescue team. The good people of Phoenix sent a team to New Orleans following the aftermaths of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Now, if you remember, immediately following Katrina, there were roving bands of hoodlums running the streets of New Orleans shooting and looting. In fact, these thugs were to blame for a lot of the slow response because they endangered relief workers.

So some of the Phoenix officers brought their guns with them. Imagine that! Policeman with guns....oh, the humanity! Well, the gun-hating bureaucrats at FEMA are having none of it. They have suspended the rescuers from Phoenix because of some rule that says search and rescue teams supposedly aren't allowed to have guns. So rather than changing the rule, the bureaucrats have kicked the help from Phoenix to the curb.

So what have the good people from Phoenix done to deserve this? The team plucked more than 400 Katrina survivors from rooftops and freeway overpasses in flooded parts of New Orleans. This is how they have been rewarded for their generosity.

The mayor of Phoenix should demand FEMA repay the city for the salaries of these workers and vow to never help the Feds again. Maybe then they'll change their tune.

IT TAKES A HURRICANE TO CUT GOVERNMENT

Join Neal and his proud beast Coco at The Bobby Cox "Paws Cause" Barbeque and Entertainment Fund Raiser November 5th.

Big story out of New Orleans yesterday.....Mayor Ray Nagin announced that 3,000 non-essential city employees would be laid off. The reason: the city simply doesn't have the money to pay their salaries. The move is expected to save $5 to $8 million out of the city's monthly payroll of $20 million.

The consensus seems to be that this is a terrible thing. And it is, short-term, for the people affected, who will have to go into the private sector and find another job. But the bottom line is this: it's sad when we've come to the point where it takes a hurricane to actually cut government. Not slow the growth of government, but actually cut the government's size.

Watch this closely over the next few months. All 3,000 of these workers were deemed "non-essential." That means there were no police officers or firefighters let go. If they're so non-essential, then what are they doing on the government payroll anyway? Let's just see if the City of New Orleans dries up and blows away because it has 3,000 fewer bureaucrats pushing pencils down at city hall.

If a city can cut its work force in half and not affect any essential personnel, that tells you something about the efficiency of government.

Bottom line --- not one penny of taxpayer's money should ever be spent at any level of government for a worker deemed to be "non-essential."

BRACING FOR CLASS WARFARE

There is a report today that income figures for the richest Americans -- the top 1 percent -- grew in 2003. In other words, the rich got richer. On top of that, the income taxes they paid declined. Get ready for another round of class warfare in the media, and you can depend on the media not pointing out that income taxes are paid on income and not on wealth appreciation. Sadly, most Americans wouldn't even understand what I just said.

The way that this will be reported will be that the rich people stole the money they received and the money they made was at the expense of the poor. We will hear nothing about what they did to earn the money or what investments were made. Doesn't matter...this is the evil rich we're talking about.

The evil rich are an easy target. They're just too busy doing the things that make them rich to worry about the rantings of petty class warlords. In the meantime, politicians know that the "screw the rich" message works with voters. After all, if you're sitting at work in a miserable job, it sure feels good to be able to blame all of your problems on someone else, doesn't it?

Once again --- the rich keep getting richer because they keep doing the things that make them rich. Ditto for the poor.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

George Will is weighing in on the Harriet Miers court pick: he simply says she's the wrong choice, and he skewers Bush for promoting his cronies.

Louis Farrakhan says he is planning on taking action against Bill Bennett for his comments about aborting black babies.  Louie is going to have a press conference today about it. We're also supposed to hear more about the blow levees in New Orleans.  This should be good.

There's about two weeks left before the new, more restrictive bankruptcy law goes into effect on October 17th.  The result: people are rushing to file.  It's keeping the lawyers busy.

The antiwar movement is becoming a force in the Democratic Party.  Dick Morris reports that the only problem is they don't have any leaders.

Private property rights are under constant assault, as evidenced by the Supreme Court's Kelo decision.  David Keene says the Founding Fathers are turning in their graves.

Despite all the disappointment on the right, Robert Novak tells us it appears Harriet Miers will be easily confirmed to the Supreme Court.  The real question is what sort of Justice she will be.

Is the United States' foreign policy to blame for terrorism?  Christopher Hitchens says the only policy that causes terrorism is the policy of the bombers themselves.  Good column.

The latest Bali bombings show us one thing: Islamic fanatics want things their way or no way at all...you're either a believer or a non-believer. Mark Steyn explains.

Many are not only blaming George Bush for the Hurricane Katrina response, but actually blaming him for the hurricane itself.  Walter E. Williams points the finger at the Euro-Weenies and Al Gore.

President Bush says Harriet Miers has "a good heart."  Michelle Malkin says that's nice, but a good heart doesn't make a good justice. The fur continues to fly.
