ONE MORE DAY ON THE ROAD

Neal broadcasting from WAPI

This morning Neal is broadcasting from WAPI in Birmingham, AL. Thursday & Friday he'll be back in Atlanta for the News/Talk 750 WSB Care-A-Thon benefiting the AFLAC Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service of Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. This morning Neal caught a few extra zzzzzs so the notes are entirely the product of his staff. He claims no responsibility. We've got pics up to Greensboro in the tour gallery. More coming!

WHY WE NEED OUR OWN OIL

You need look no further than the gas prices at your local station to know why the United States needs to get itself off the OPEC nipple as much as possible. ABC had a report last on World News Tonight that said there are only 149 refineries in the United States. Any single one of those refineries goes offline, has a problem or shuts down, and we have ourselves a gas shortage. That means prices go through the roof.

Not a single refinery has been built in the last 30 years. Why is that? Because the radical environmentalists have made it so hard along with the government to pull the proper permits, that's why. The oil companies figure it's just not worth it. There's also a little bit of the NIMBY syndrome....not in my back yard. People want to drive their gas-guzzling SUV's, but would be jumping up and down screaming if somebody dared to build a new refinery within sniffing distance of their house.

As was pointed out last night, new refineries would be able to refine the less expensive heavy crude oil, which is $14 a barrel less than the light crude that is used now. Gas would be cheaper because there would be more of it and because the oil was cheaper. But as it stands now, the process for building a new refinery takes years.

What about alternatives? Do you think the current administration has put enough effort into alternative fuel sources?
Yes
No
In addition, we also need to start drilling for our own oil. Right now. Everywhere. We need to send the rigs not only to Alaska, but offshore and everywhere else there might be oil. Why is this so urgent? Well, we do want cheaper prices, but another reason is because we are lining the pockets of terrorists and tinhorn dictators that despise our very existence. For example, Venezuela.

Venezuela is run by a thug known as Hugo Chavez, a communist. Today, he is threatening to cut off the flow of oil to the United States. That country is the fourth-largest provider of oil. If Chavez cuts us off, we're going to pay more at the pump. Politicians know this, so they will try and appease Venezuela, despite it not being in our national security interests to do so.

The way to reduce our dependence on foreign oil is not with hybrid cars the size of a Budweiser can...it's with our own drilling and exploration. Oh, and for crying out loud, we need to start building new refineries. Pronto.

THE LEFT AND JOHN ROBERTS

When George Bush announced on national television that D.C. Circuit Judge John Roberts would be his pick for his first Supreme Court vacancy, the left was elated. Groups like NARAL and Moveon.org were gearing up to spend tons of money in opposition. Only it hasn't worked out that way.

It turns out John Roberts is a pretty decent judge. Not part of the radical right. His record on the bench is a bit thin, so the fringe groups don't have much to go on. The abortion group NARAL ran an ad that was an outright fabrication. Despite CNN's willingness to air the ad, it was pulled and the person responsible for its airing at NARAL got the boot. Another blow to the anti-Roberts brigades.

Then this week comes news that Democrats are rolling over on Roberts. They see him cruising through the Senate without a fight, so they'll keep their powder dry on this one and let it ride. Got to pick your battles, you know. Well, as you might expect, this isn't going over too well with the fringe wackos. They're mad at the Democrats in the Senate. The extreme left runs the party these days, and they expected more Bush-bashing.

So now Teddy Kennedy and Pat Leahy are stepping up to reassure the left that they're going to oppose Roberts. They're seeking to appease the liberal extremists that now run their party. They're publicly whining about papers that have been released from when Roberts was a lawyer in the Bush Sr. and Reagan White Houses. Never mind that the confirmation hearings haven't even begun.

And Democrats talk about the right wing in the Republican party. What about the left wing who runs theirs?

WASHINGTON POST AND 9/11

The Washington Post, which had been scheduled to participate in an event organized by the Department of Defense to commemorate 9/11 is pulling out. They were going to provide free advertising for such event. So why have they canceled?

They bowed to critics who said that being involved in such an event would mean the newspaper was endorsing the war and that would compromise its journalistic integrity. That's right....they actually said that and that's why the Post isn't participating. Check out this quote from Rick Ehrmann, a bedwetting leftist from the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild: "The Post has a code of conduct that says employees should avoid a conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest. In this case The Post was sponsoring the Pentagon's Freedom Walk, which ties the attack on Sept. 11 to the Iraq war, and of course, The Post's reporters have proven ... that there is no connection between the two, that that link is false." Perhaps Mr. Ehrmann would be willing to put down his Michael Moore talking points long enough to admit he's wrong. But that's not the issue.

So what's the real agenda here? The Washington Post is not participating because doing so would contradict their political agenda. As an anti-American, Bush-bashing newspaper, they don't want to be seen rubbing elbows with the evil Pentagon.

REDNECK SCRAP BOOK

Flatscreen TVs aren't just for rich, fancy folk. More fun in the Redneck Scrap Book.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Air America got $875,000 that was meant for the children of the Boys and Girls Club.  Michelle Malkin wonders why Air America isn't doing more to right the wrong.

A military intelligence official involved with 'Able Danger' says he briefed the 9/11 Commission about its activities in tracking Mohammed Atta and some of the other 9/11 hijackers.  Perhaps there is something to this story.  Keep an eye on this one, because the mainstream media sure won't.

Remember the group that wants to condemn Justice David Souter's house and build a hotel because he supported the Kelo vs. New London, Connecticut decision on eminent domain?  The effort is alive and well.  They're on their way to New Hampshire to get the ball rolling.  Priceless.

Bill Clinton, only the second president to ever be impeached, is still in denial about the whole thing.  He says world leaders were concerned when it was happening, and he had to reassure them.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin has stepped in it again, and Stephen Spruiell is there to chronicle his missteps. It would seem the good Senator has a problem with the truth.

So how are the Democrats prospects looking in 2006? Any chance of regaining the House or the Senate? Maybe not, says Mort Kondracke...who says Democrats still might screw it up.

The media's love affair with the fast-fading Cindy Sheehan rolls on...now CNN and MSNBC are doing live interviews with her. The Media Research Center reports.

Civil rights groups today, now that they're original mission has been largely fulfilled, are promoting a different agenda. Walter E. Williams says we've seen it all before.

Thomas Sowell highlights the recent passing of a tireless advocate for gifted students.  You know, students who are smarter than others...that were judged to be better...the kind of thing the left abhors.

Linda Chavez says there's no greater pain than the loss of a child...and as such, she has been slow to blame Cindy Sheehan for her actions.  However, the honeymoon is over.

Heather's Reading Assignments:

There is a direct correlation to global warming and self-worth , as reported by Spengler.

Love in a drive-thru window, livin' it up when I'm slowin down; Love in a drive-thru window, Lovin' it up till I hit the ground.

Other than the fact that Sheehan doesn't really think Bush should meet with her (nearly a 1/4th of the page down), now the war-protesters can't park within a 1/4th of a mile from the Crawford ranch, but now they can all hang out on a nearby lawn. Just another person who wants publicity... " Hey Ma! Look at me, my lawn is being inhabited by anti-Americans." Oh, his neighbors are going to LOVE him!

Why do some people STILL insist that no chemical weapons were found? Oh yeah, media bias. Got it.

WHAT THE HECK ARE THOSE POINTY HAND THINGS?
