YOUR GOVERNMENT AT WORK

The Ann Arbor City Council in Michigan is threatening fire firefighters. It has eliminated crucial city positions. Why? Budget cuts. Times are tough.

But ...

Somehow the city has $850,000 to commission a German artist to build a three-piece water sculpture that would go in front of the new police and courts building right by the City Hall.

Question: If corporate welfare is so bad, why is welfare for artists so wonderful? You do realize, don't you, that this German artist would have no chance in hell of selling his POS work of art in the private marketplace for anywhere near $850,000. Why are taxpayers abused this way?

This is what happens when you let government hacks get control of other people's money. That is the basis of our current problems with government. And it is not limited to Washington or to city halls. Take a look at this study out of California which shows that there is absolutely no correlation between government school spending and test scores. Yet K-12 spending rose 21.9% from fiscal 2003-2004 to 2008-2009, outpacing state income growth and inflation. When it comes down to it, none of that money ended up actually going to students -- classroom expenditures as a share of total school spending fell to 57.8% from 59%. Instead, it went toward hiring more administrators, who then enjoyed outlandish bonuses and pay hikes with zero accountability or performance-based system.

"An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy; because there is a limit beyond which no institution and no property can bear taxation."

--John Marshall

What others are saying

  • Thomas/Onion
Thomas, did you really post the Onion as a valid source. You know the Onion writes fake stories, right?
  • Art
The artist runs Atelier Dreiseitl, a noted waterscape firm, and has a list of work going back to 1983 and projects all over the world. He is a small business just as all artists are. Do you consider electricians who get government contracts to be on welfare? Do you consider Blackwater to be on welfare?
  • responsible purchase?
heard on the news that the city commissioned this piece of art 3-4 years ago and planned and saved over time for this purchase. So were they responsible in their planning or irresponsible all together? Does the contract that commissioned this piece of art allow it to be canceled just before delivery? I would hate to lose my job and see a new fountain installed because the cost to buy it is only part. The city has to now pay ongoing to keep it running. In actuality, the city should have done more saving along the way in general.
  • Stanley?
I don't recall making a statement. I asked a question. Along the same lines as your favorite "have you stopped raping and beating your slaves yet".

So, who is the liar Stanley? If I am, find a mirror and you will see the other one.

    You are still a hypocrite.
  • Since when did self proclaimed libertarians ever care about firefighters?
If a firefighter ever came to a libertarians house when it's on fire, they would have to turn them away based on principle.

  • SFC
Nope, cant say I did. I like how conservatives either lie to prove a point or ignore it. Pretty sad.
  • I'm a full-time artist
and I don't produce any art for local or state or federal government entities. I actually produce stuff that is requested of me by regular people and businesses. I have lived off what I make from the art I create...I guess people like what I do...and have NEVER taken government funds, never will. I consider artists who apply for and take grants from government to be lousy artists and too lazy to work. The local art association where I live is just one big joke and grant generator for these artistic losers.
  • NOTW - Troll
Is so obvious today...hypocrisy is rampet with no hard detection needed. ;)
  • Hey Stanley....it was a simple rhetorical question.......
Did YOU call someone ELSE a TROLL?

Similar to: "Have you stopped beating and raping your slaves yet?" Who's line is THAT Stanley?

    You are still a hypocrite.
  • cities everywhere are doing the same thing..
they complain about budget shortfalls and then fund some stupid city art sculpture.Nashville spent hundreds of thousands on a sculpture that looks like a section of a incomplete rollercoaster track that most visitors look at and ask " are they ever gonna finish it?" or the small town of columbia tn,which lost most of its tax base when Obama motors closed and moved a new GM plant to Mich. They spent millions to build a "riverwalk" because they didn't want to loose fed. matching funds,to match money they didn't have in the first place,to build a useless green area that no one wanted and only the criminals use, and then only when it not flooded by the river...the BEST is New Orleans, who spent $80,000 on a hanging ball artwork for a city downtown plaza, that like a gaint diso ball of twisted of coathangers and tv antenna's.That must have been what the city street cleaner crew thought it was when it fell one night and they hauled it off to the dump as trash. Why the hell do cities buy the uglyist art that no one else wants anyway?
  • Well... in all fairness i am willing to bet the water sculpture doesn't belong to a collective bargaining unit.

Maybe a better use of the money after all.
  • YUCK!!!!
That is uuuuuuggggggglllllyyyy! Must be the same "artist" that made that horrid water "sculpture" in Jasper Ga. Ewwwwww! Sure hope their homes don't catch fire but if they do they can hang a big tent off the point.
  • $850,000?? for an overblown fountain?
I can see the future.........Once this thing is finished and dedicated, it will routinely have soap dumped in it by assorted vandals, until the water is shut off and it's just one more concrete impediment to pedestrians.
Please excuse me, gotta go buy some cheap detergent.
  • SO EASY, Thank you Neal!
Conservatives cry and complain all the time about the government, and then when budgets are cut and government employees may lose their jobs, they complain again!!! I love how they are so dependent on the government but pretend they dont need it.
  • i cant pay my mortgage
but im puting in this AWSOME pond with gold fish,a waterfall and lillypads for the frogs.maybe even some cool copper guttering (thats some expensive stuff )oh and a murrel on the bedroom ceiling...its gona be soooooo cool.im thinking libs dont have children.everytime my kids ax me something about politics that so screwy, its hard to explain (why do you have to pay more tax if you make more money?why doesnt my school have new books but the principle has a new mercedes?) and and on.when you try to explain something political to a child, the idiocy comes out and the kids says "WTF?" when i was young, i thought it would be sooo awsome to sit around and talk politics, world events and such, when i finally figured out what people were talking about,i said WTF?it was just nonscence and bikkering and lying and smearing the OTHER party.im embarrased to talk politics to anyone because its usually a waiste of time and so stupid
  • It would be amusing
.. after this monstrosity is completed if someone blew it up or otherwise somehow ruined it. However, this is exactly what that city deserves for electing liberals. I look forward to pointing and laughing when their bond rating tanks out and the rest of the productive businesses flee the area. I raise a toast to the future ghost town of Ann Arbor, MI. May you die out quickly to save your population much lingering pain.
  • Oldest trick in the book
When government faces real spending cuts, they always go for the cops & fire department first to scare and/or punish the citizens who dared to demand a little fiscal responsibility.

    Don't politicians suck?
  • Artists
Welfare for artists is important because the most reliable Democrat voters behind blacks, hispanics, welfare recipients, and drug addicts, are adults who call themselves "artists".
Art is a nice hobby for people with actual daytime jobs. People who are full time Artists are usually nothing but overgrown children who didn't develop beyond high school. They are too busy being cool and edgy to worry about things like getting up in the morning and going to work. Like I said, a reliable Democrat voting pool.
  • You missed the point
    Neal,
You are missing the point, this is the most liberal city in the state and has to worry about supporting the art community over everything else.
  • Ronald Reagan quotation
'Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.'
  • Ed Spending and Achievement
The study in California is not unique. Right here in Georgia, the Center for an Educated Georgia found that as public education spending has doubled since 1980 graduation rates have actually dropped! Find it here if interested: http://tinyurl.com/c2ykko
