"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that justifies it."

GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT IN YOUR RETIREMENT ACCOUNT .. COMING SOONER THEN YOU THINK

It is here. The gears are starting to turn and the Democrats are getting the plan into motion. It seems innocent now .. but it is only the first of many steps toward a government takeover of your retirement. Just like ObamaCare was significant first step toward government-run healthcare, this idea for automatic enrollment IRAs is just the beginning ... from The Hill:

The White House and congressional Democrats, with the backing of the AARP, will soon put forth a plan to automatically enroll new private-sector employees in investment retirement accounts (IRAs).

The measure will apply to new workers at firms that don't currently offer 401(k) retirement plans, according to AARP, the lobby group for seniors. Workers would have the choice of opting out of the accounts ...

Like other employer-based retirement accounts, the opt-out accounts proposed by Democrats would have tax benefits. It's unclear whether they will be traditional tax-deferred accounts or Roth-style vehicles, in which account holders don't pay taxes on withdrawals. Iwry, a retirement savings expert, has preferred Roth accounts in the past ...

"It's another burden placed on business that's coming from Washington, keeping business owners from hiring and investing," said Bill Rys, the tax counsel for the National Federation of Independent Business. "They're being told, 'Here's how you run your business.' "

So what is the immediate impact of this? For one, it adds yet another burden on small businesses. Already trying to figure out how they are going to handle the new employer mandate under ObamaCare, this talk of automatic enrollment just adds to fuel to the fire. Mandating private companies, especially small companies, always comes at a price. It takes time, resources and money to implement and abide by these mandates. That money doesn't appear out of thin air; it is taken from money that would otherwise be used to pay employees, buy new equipment or hire new workers.

If Barack Obama and the Democrats were serious about helping small businesses, more government mandates is NOT the answer. Remember last week how I was telling you that businesses have had it with Obama? This is exactly why. They are uncertain as to his next move, his next mandate, his next tax. Bottom line is that employers do not want to hire or expand when they are uncertain about their future earnings, which are affected by taxes and mandates.

What others are saying

  • Great Idea
This sounds like a wonderful plan, with one minor exception. It should be applied to the public workers instead of the private employees. Do away with the guaranteed pensions for anyone getting a paycheck from the government, and let them fund their own retirement like most of us in the private sector do.
  • Death of Individuality
Isn't it interesting that they call IRAs as "Investment" Retirement Accounts instead of "Individual" Retirement Accounts?

Kind of sums up their long-term intentions right there.
  • Now, let's see....
"they" want to raise the retirement age to 70 for anyone who is currently under 50. If us old folks can't retire, there will be no jobs for the youngsters; therefore they won't need gov't-mandated retirement accounts if they can't get a job and earn money. Pffftt.
  • Wanna bet
That businesses will also be told they have to match a certain percentage?

This will indeed lead to more job killing!

If Government wants to help business grow jobs and get us all back to work I have one word for them:

    STOP

Just stop doing anything. Ya'll just go home and collect your check and stay out of Washington. No more bills, no more legislation. Just stop.
  • AARP Endorsement of Govt. IRAs
This is the reason I've been throwing AARP mail in the garbage for the past 15 years. If I don't trust the Government with my healthcare and retirement funds, why would I ever trust a bunch of AARP liberals??
  • AARP Rip off
Nearly forty years ago AARP was an organization of seniors dedicated to making sure that seniors had a voice in the halls of power. Today AARP is run by a bunch of under 50 types doing nothing more than selling Life, Health, and Burial insuranse. Now it looks like they are now in the IRA businness. Anybody want to make a bet that they will soon be selling "IRA tax protection insurance"?
  • Troll of The Day Alert
Today its name is Megatron. Please don't feed the trolls.
  • @ Grandpa
Exactly Grandpa. The only difference I can think of is that they are keeping the drowning anchor known as Social Security and are now going to /force/ you to buy into this crap as well. Will this also be a source of money I am not allowed to touch, like Social Security? Is this a sneaky way to force more Americans to introduce capital into an anemic and over burdened economy? These plans have to be invested in something other than T-Bills, but maybe not. Maybe this is their backup plan for WHEN Social Security implodes. Not that it will matter, the implosion of Social Security is likely to drag even the new 401ks into insolvency.
  • retirement accounts
If the government was serious about helping people with no access to 401ks they would just expand the ira limitations. By starting govt run retirement accounts they are just setting up a new system to embezzle more of taxpayers money.
  • AARP Fraud
The AARP was created primarily to peddle insurance, and it has always lured people into membership with promises of freebies, while focusing its efforts of backing big-government schemes. Well, that's what insurance companies do. They take your money to protect you from risk, then they push the government to either assume those risks or make it illegal for you to take those risks in the first place. They lobby to get your money for nothing. Big Insurance is the Big Money behind the push for Big Government, and the AARP is nothing but a front for Big Insurance.
  • AARP
The AARP does not need member's dues to support itself. The organization is tax exempt, receives millions of dollars from the federal government and makes tons of money from hawking high priced insurance policies to seniors.
To maintain their tax exempt status and the huge bucks they get from Washington, the AARP supports the democrat party exclusively. Regardless of the needs of seniors, the AARP will support the liberal agenda.
    Seniors?
    Who needs them.
Just continue printing the slick magazine with articles about Clint Eastwood and the majority of AARP members are happy to be screwed.

  • Gimme gimme gimme
Why is it that the so-called party of personal choice is always so quick to tell us how to spend our own money?
  • Where's the outrage
I know I'm getting old, but I seem to recall when the Bush administration floated the idea of pushing people out of social security and into private retirement funds, the MSM, progressives and every Bush hater went nuts.

Where are those same people now that the Dems and Obama want everyone to go to a private (until they seize it) retirement account?
  • Ah, more conservative hypocrisy
Conservatives spend all their days bending over to big businesses and drinking all their kool aid(sometimes even starting wars just to help the stock) but then just because of crazy speculation from radio show hosts they are all for small businesses.

    A bit hypocritical right?
  • IRA proposal.
Has this one even been presented in bill format yet?

On the surface, it sounds like an OK idea. But like any other overhead cost, it has to be allocated. Will it be in the form of higher prices or few employees? Good question. I personally would lean towards few employees to reduce my overall legal liability.
  • Gevernment in your retirement account
They have been at it for years. SSI, 401-k rules, pension rules. Take a look at the form 5500 and all of it's attachments to see where they are. All they want to know is where the money is at so they can get "their fair share"
  • like MTV also
when was the last time you acually heard MUSIC on MTV? or a music video .i agree with Adam.they start off with good intentions but BIG STUPID always takes over.dont feel like talking about too much that matters today...my cars in the shop and i need 750 to get it out.thatsa all i can care about for a few days....boo hoo hoo me.
  • AARP
AARP is like the NAACP and the ACLU. Just another group that sold out their original principles to politics.
  • Just say no...
To AARP! Sadly, my Dad was a big proponent of AARP and was asked to join locally as a vocal representative( because he was sharp, articulate, and understood numbers, wish he'd passed some of that on... but I digress...). With all due respect to my late Father and my siblings who love AARP, I can't bring myself to join them. And if they want to get a piece of my savings or 401(k), they'll just have to pry it from my cold dead overseas bank account!
  • Seizure Of Retirement Accounts?
Wouldn't that be tough to achieve when not too long from now no one will have a goddam JOB with which to fund one??
  • Government Retirement Accounts
Yeah, we want this right? After all, the government has done such a great job with Social Security. I'm just going to be first in line for one of these IRAs.
  • Government Retirement Accounts and AARP
This is a prime example why I long ago stopped my membership in AARP. Actually it was a result of their "head in the sand" approach to social security reform. Have written senators and representative several times reminding them that these clowns do not represent the views of all (probably not even a majority) seniors.
