THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT!

Yesterday I did a little ranting about something completely unimportant in our lives - those damned customer loyalty cards. I don't like 'em. First of all ... I don't carry a purse, so I don't have room for all those cards in a wallet. Secondly, I don't like the little cards on a keychain .. not manly enough. So a listener pointed me to "Cardstar." It's an app for my iPhone. Free, if I remember correctly. You download this and then you enter all of your customer loyalty cards. When you get to the counter you pull out your iPhone and with a push of an icon your customer loyalty card is right there ... ready for scanning. Pretty cool. And no ... I'm not making any money from this. Is there an app for creating apps for iPhones?

What others are saying

  • only handy if you've got an iphone
It seems that only iphones are being given apps with no thought whatsoever for other system ones such as WM6. How about the other systems first for a change.
  • bummer about having an iPhone
Buying from Apple . . . sort of like Obama going to West Point.
In the meantime, there is an Android & yuk ptooey iphone app called Talk Radio that let's people using these phones listen to the shows of about 20 talk radio hosts. Let's get you one there.
    Ask juicydevelopement.com
They do have Rush and Sean and also a bunch of traitorous America haters.
I've been using this I wrote for my use on my PDA 10 years ago. I guess I should have made it a product...and made a killing selling it for free :-)
  • CardStar works great
My first use was at the ATL airport, scanned my Delta Sky Milesnumber at the self-serve kiosk, printed my boarding pass and headed for the gate without having to print stuff at home and bring it with me. Also works great at the public library! Results depend on the type of scanner used and making sure that the CardStar barcode looks like the one on your card; instructions on their website, www.mycardstar.com
  • Meh - use the photo library
I hate carrying those cards too and instead took photos of the front & back of each one, created a photo album and named it "Wallet", then organized them alphabetically. Shazam!
  • It also works
It also works on the iTouch. Thanx for the tip. My wallet is now 1/2 inch thinner!
  • Iphone App
This is a great idea. Already downloaded and in use. Hey, make use of the technology. If you don't use them, you're only hurting yourselves.
  • Cards
Just go to Publix. They dont have cards.
  • app for making iPhone apps
The app for making iPhone apps is called xCode. :)
  • iphone vs loyalty cards
Sorry, but there's no way I'm going to hand my iPhone to a store clerk to drop and break. I'd rather carry a little keychain tag than lose a $200 phone due to someone's clutziness.
  • Won'r Work
All my "loyalty" cards were set up with fake names and numbers which I have long since forgotten. Safeway used to remind me every once in a while of the name I put in there with a cheerful checkout greeting, "Hello, Mr. Scrotum Face" but recently they have apparently blanked out my name so the cashier is stumped.
  • I hate loyalty cards too!
A couple of years ago we took a driving trip through CA, OR and WA. Gas was cheaper at grocery chain gas stations--if you had a loyalty card. Unfortunately there were several chains that had gas stations and not every town had the chain that we had a card for so we had get a new one. At the end of our trip my wallet was full of loyalty cards that I had no further user for.
  • Boortz...where's your brain?
Love you man, but where is your brain on this one?

I have several of these "accounts" and never carry the stupid cards or key-ring thingies. I either - in the case of Kroger - input my phone number (a fake number no doubt) or have the clerk at BestBuy (who requires my info anyways to check out) to pull up my account by number - yes the same fake number we use on all of these accounts. No extra hassle than usual.

As for rewards for this silly tracking of my grocery and CD purchases, BestBuy gave me $100 this year to spend on Christmas gifts through their program and Kroger gives me .10 off each gallon of gas I buy there for essentially buying the groceries I would have anyways.

Come on Neal, find a better subject to get worked up over...
  • "not manly enough"
Come on Neal, walking around with a cellphone and bragging about your iphone is about as unmanly as it gets.
  • better system
I live in Korea, and here multiple companies band together to create one point card. So you just have one card for 7 or 8 different places. It's not perfect but certainly much better! Also, they don't ask for names or anything.

As for recording data, you shouldn't care about it if it's anonymous. It's simply marketing information. For instance, if they see the majority of people who buy chocolate donuts buy them between 5-6pm then they will know when to put out fresh chocolate donuts to keep your whiny ass from complaining about not having fresh donuts. But I can understand the complaints if they require personal info.
  • Tried it / Doesn't work
Nine out of ten times the scanner will not read the screen of the phone. I'm guessing the glass is reflecting the scanner's laser.
  • too much hate in the world
but that said, i hate the online sites that require you to set up an id and password. the most mundane services want your account and then e-mail your account AND password, in clear text, to you.
  • A better idea
Choose not to do business with stores that require a so-called "loyalty card".

    http://nocards.org

Hint: they are not giving you a "discount" for using said card. They are in actuality recording your purchases and building a dossier of your spending habits, and penalizing those who refuse to participate (with higher prices).
  • Privacy
I thought your dislike of these cards was from a privacy standpoint. They are information collection tools and people give the information away willingly.

That's why, when I sign up for these cards, I always say my name is "Neal Boortz."
  • KROGER CARD
I heard your rant yesterday on Kroger Cards, and I have just one question: What in tarnation could a GROCERY STORE sell that would cause anyone to give a damn that anyone else knew they purchased? We're talking about GROCERIES, not bongs and HD DVD porn. Which I know nothing about and have never been to Starship so shut up.
  • I hate it all
I hate the cards, I hate rebates, I hate coupons, if you really want to impress me, just lower your prices right off the bat.
