WANT A FEW LITTLE EARTH FACTOIDS?

We, in our present form, have walked the earth for about 120,000 years.  During that time there have been 20 sudden global warmings.  In most of these sudden warmings the temperatures rose by about 18 degrees over a span of 20 years.  Right now the Copenhagen Clowns are freaking out over a rise of 1.5 degrees in 100 years.

There have been about 142 mass extinctions since life began on the earth about 3.8 billion years ago.  These mass extinctions were not caused by man.  They were caused by nature.

Those goodies came from this column by Howard Bloom, author of "The Genius of the Beast: A Radical Re-Vision of Capitalism"  Here's another excerpt for you to ponder:

"What's the real cause of the Earth's norm--a climate that rocks back and forth from steamy tropical heat to icy freeze? A climate that deposits fossilized seashells on mountaintops and makes dry land into seas and swamps?

The Earth is a traveler. Its angle as it sweeps around the sun produces the massive weather flips we call seasons--the dance from summer to winter and back again. But there's more. Our planet has a peculiar wobble--its precession. And that precession produces upheavals in our weather, weather alterations we cycle through every 22,000, 41,000 and 100,000 years. This is called the Milankovich cycle, named for the Serbian engineer and geophysicist who discovered it.

But the wobbles in our trip around the sun are just a start. The sun is a traveler, too. It circles the black hole at the galaxy's core every 226 million years. And it takes its tiny flock of planets with it. That means us. The result?

The journey around the galactic core is fraught with dangers. For example, every 143 million years we pass through a spiral arm of the galaxy, an arm that tosses tsunamis of cosmic rays our way. Those rays produce massive climate change. Then there's the innocent-sounding stuff astronomers call galactic "fluff," massive clouds of cosmic dust lurking in our solar system's path that also cause dramatic climate change.

Meanwhile, the sun itself is going through a cycle from birth to death. As a result of its maturation, good old reliable sol is 43% warmer today than it was when the Earth first gathered itself into a globe of planetesimals 4.5 billion years ago."

Isn't it time for you to start studying this global warming stuff on your own?  If there actually is a concerted attack being launched against Capitalism by tired old communists and socialist leading hoards of youngsters with no experience in the real world ... wouldn't you want to know about it?

This is a very dangerous time for our country and for the world.  We have a president who is enamored of Karl Marx and communism; a president who is clearly of an anti-Capitalist bent; a president who referred to the private sector as the "enemy" in one of his books .. and that president is over there in Copenhagen at the epicenter of anti-capitalist furor right now trying to hammer out some kind of a deal.  A deal to accomplish what?  To stop the meanderings of the Earth around the sun?  To make the sun stand still in the universe?

It's time to get involved folks.

What others are saying

  • food for thought re: man's sinfulness being the reason for the flood
Lots of people say that the flood had a bit more to do with the existence of Nephilim (hybrid offspring of fallen angels and humans) than "man's sinfulness".

Not saying it is fact, but certainly not saying any of what you just said is either. The constant threats to the genetic line of Adam (from which God promised the Messiah) make the hybrid speculation interesting to contemplate. The "barbaric" conquests of Joshua wherein he was told to rub out entire tribes of "giants" also verifies the war behind the wars. That war being between God and Satan. If those tribes had Nephilim, that would explain the "barbarity" of utter annihilation. No quarter would be expected in a war between God and Satan (if there is such a thing, right?) Lots of people say that what people perceive as aliens are fallen angels. That they are inter-dimensional rather than intergalactic. Check out Chuck Missler on topics like Nephilim and Alien Encounters. His explanations for The Flood are interesting.

"As the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son
of man be." And what was that like? Gen 6:1-5 is a place to start. An apocryphal book (Enoch) supposedly explains the Days of Noah in more detail http://bibleprobe.com/nephilim.htm

The possibility of a connection between science, the Bible and the mechanisms of strategic geopolitical evil in human history and today is fascinating.
  • Tom the "scientist"
What's sad and funny is the "scientists" who insist, in spite of all the geological evidence and natural rotation and cycle of our planet in relation to the sun,(stuff we learned in elementary school) that any perceived "climate change" is all our "fault". Now that "global warming" has been trounced by winter's fury (AGAIN), maybe you self-proclaimed "scientists" need to go back to the drawing board. Here's more info: http://sfcmac.wordpress.com/2009/11/23/hide-the-decline-e-mails-reveal-how-scientists-discussed-climate-change-hoax/

The majority of meteorologists who counter Al ("the weatherman")Gore's crackpot theories with REAL inconvenient truth have been threatened with legal action, censorship, and in some cases, death.

We're not buying the Chicken Little story anymore.
  • Neal's "science"
I am very glad that atmospheric scientists did not follow Neal's footprints in their scientific education. Ignorance is not bliss, it can be the end of all things as we know it.
For those of use that have significant scientific training - Neal's view on this serious topic is funny ... sad ... but funny.
  • Facts
I'll settle for facts; not factoids. Macroevolutionary scientists' earthly time-line is a fairy tale. All the "effects" of cooling and warming were caused by the global flood of 6,000 years ago. Time and season, until God destroys it like He did with the flood - due to man's sinfulness. Next time it's destroyed it will be the REAL and ONLY global warming... 2nd Peter 3:10; "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up."
  • Milankovich Cycle
It seems as though the Serbians discover ALL the major stuff. Look at Nikola Tesla! He invented radio, wireless power plants (not in production), and Alternating Current which is far more efficient than Direct Current.
  • Past and Future
    Past near misses:

    Projected Future Near Misses:

April 2029 isn't looking very promising.
  • Slob Law coming courtesy of the freedom loving libs
    True that. Deep stuff, Neal.

I don't make my bed in the morning because it'll just get messed up that night. Waste of time to me.

Are these liberal know-it-alls gonna arrest me for it? I can picture them wearing armbands with those flaky obama O's going door to door. Proud members of the Slob Police.

I can also picture the crowds in the beer halls. How do any of these enlightened liberals dare to say "Never Again" while applauding the legislation that is making it possible for IT to happen again? Useful idiots.
  • Don't Worry
Stop worrying so much about climate change, because we're all gonna die when some massive chunk of metal comes hurtling through our atmosphere and slams into the ground.

    http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/neo/close.html
  • Scale, people, scale.
Neal, you really need to try a little harder. These "factoids" may sound great to a person with no sense of scale, but they're all pretty well irrelevant to the current global warming.

Most of the cycles Bloom is talking about take place over millions of years. The rate of climate change produced by these cycles is so minute as to be virtually nonexistent on human time scales.

The only important one as far as humans are concerned is the Milankovich Cycle. The changes brought about by this cycle are closer to the scale that we can perceive; however, this one actually works against you since we are believed to be in a cooling phase of this cycle, and will remain so for at least 23,000 years.

Your claim that in most of the significant warmings over the last 120,000 years were on the magnitude of 9 degrees per decade is, if I am not mistaken, made up out of whole cloth. I say this for a couple of reasons: one, because there have only been six warming events in the last 400,000 years that are even close to that kind of magnitude, and two, all of those events took place over thousands of years, not a couple of decades.
  • Jeff your analysis made me smile...
It was a bit like the conversation a parent has with a petulant child demanding a second desert...

    Very enjoyable...
  • The religion of climate change
Atmospheric CO2 levels have risen over the past 100 years. That's an established fact. But why and what effect CO2 has on our climate cannot be determined with any credibility in an environment where so many have adopted ClimateChange as a religion.
And that is a shame. We truly need to know.
But religions are faith based. Facts do not matter to the Faithful. Facts are to be twisted to buttress the Faith or ignored if presented by heretics who reject the Faith.
At this time in history where faith in a Supreme Being is ridiculed as being naive, ClimateChange has become the new Faith for the once faithless.
As Bob Dylan once said, "You gotta serve someone".
  • libtards kill yourselves to save the planet
you co2 pollutant emitters. If you refuse to kill yourselves and continue to exhale your co2 that proves you hate Mother Earth and are nothing but hypocrites.
  • Briana
Don't you guys recognize the sarcastic wit of Stan's #1 Fan? No one is really that vacuous.
  • A new Bard
Necked you have a way with words! Keep up the good work, remember
    We's Skrewed!
  • The Problem
With this article is that a) the current warming is not caused by anything astronomical; (b) is he seriously saying that we shouldn't worry about climate change because it's wiped out species before? In the words of George Carlin, I agree that the planet will be fine. *We* might be blanked, however.
  • @greg dunham
Not only are your data wrong for earth's CO2 composition, it fails to account for two key factors relating to heat and temperature of Venus,Earth and Mars. 1. Proximity to the sun. Heat decreases as the square of the distance from the heat source. If one squares the distance from the sun of both Venus and Earth, one quickly sees that the amount of heat delivered to Venus per square meter or foot is roughly double that of Earth. This is not in Fahrenheit degrees but rather degrees Kelvin on the absolute temperature scale. 2. The extreme differences in atmospheric densities of the planets. Venus' atmosphere is not only greater in CO2 concentration but far denser than earth's. Earth's atmosphere is far denser than Mars' atmosphere. There is much more CO2 in unit cubic measure on Venus than Mars despite the similarity in relative percentage of the atmosphere. I would recommend you actually study some science before you begin misquoting factoids from Wikipedia. In fact, I don't recommend Wikipedia at all unless the articles are well-sourced and one has examined the sources. Learn the principles first and much will be clarified.

One book that might be worth a read for you is Asimov's book, entitled "How Things Work". I gave this to my children some years ago and helped them through it. It is an easy read and fair introduction for an elementary school kid.
  • @ Briana Hannah Montana
Just in case you didn't know, everything on this planet COMES from this planet, the crust to be exact. No one's gonna give a crap what we do here today because no one's gonna be here to give a crap a million years from now and it won't be of mans doing. And all that shtuff (pollution) we made? The earth will simply re-absorb it. In the mean time, all you greenies that want your 1000x times over great grandchildren to have a 100% no pollution planet to live on will will have effectively insured that they (you) will be nothing more than slaves because of a pollution farce / scare as the tool to trick those that believe it by those that wish to enslave them (you).

That's what you want for your ancestors (you)?

You are correct about one thing though. It's not about socialism.
    It's worse.

God I despise simpletons like you.
  • well at least.........
ROCKET SCIENTIST.......well at least you ain't no brain surgin.......

you are right....humans are almost like babies......we bang and drool makin' noise 'bout dis an' dat......and in the long run someone has to change us cuz we messed up......modern mankind is killin' itself off cuz we think we know it all....hahahahahahaha

we don't know squat........no wait.......we know one thing........

POLITICIANS ARE SCUM........WE'S SKREWED.....that two thingys.....damn gubmint edjukation....

and pot....and likker....an' not wearin' helmets.....
  • @Chuck
That wouldn't help them. Most people learn at an early age to ignore morons.
  • insanity
"There's really no need to bring science into this issue, especially when we know that scientists can be bought."
Really? No need for science. Ok, moving on.

"What we need to realize is that the earth is a living entity with a soul, and our lack of respect for the earth is basically causing the planet to cry out to us to stop our ways."
Except that it is not a living entity, and certainly doesn't have a soul.

"You all need to stop obeying what Neal tells you and think for yourselves."
Contradictory. Neal's whole point is to think for yourself. You actually think people are "obeying" him?

"This has nothing to do with socialism,"
    Followed by:

" all we greens want is for the national government of the world to take possession of the means of production and distribute those good equally so that the economy can be run in the most efficient, earth-respecting way possible."
Other than it has everything to do with socialism. Also, the national government of the world? WTF? and thinking government does ANYTHING efficiently?
"Does anyone really need 3 flat screen TVs? I don't think so."
I fail to see how it is any of your business what I need.

"For example, why should the earth be forced to deal with the pollution involved in their construction when so many have none?"
Right. so ramp up production so everyone has them.

"Why should the earth's air be filled with the CO2 being pumped from an SUV hauling one 115lb woman to the gynecologist?"
You do understand that CO2 is a TRACE element in the atmosphere, right?

"Maybe to the stupid this sounds like socialism, but for the rest of us this is just common sense regulations to keep people from doing stupid and selfish things so that we can leave behind a planet for the next generation."
Planet will be around for the next generation, dumbass.

If this was to be a parody of a clueless leftist, then well done.
  • re: Josh Y
Josh, no one is trying to use evolution to redistribute wealth.
  • Scrub it...
Trees absorb carbon from Co2 and leave oxygen, what's the climate change crowd worried about? If Al Gore, Prince Charles, Gordon Brown, President Obama, Chavez, and the rest of the douchebags who attended would have teleconferenced and not flown, they would have reduced the amount of carbon particles and wouldn't look like such hypocrites. Maybe the rest of us would pay attention to them if they weren't so self righteous and so damn wrong!
  • Adapting
Instead of futile attempts to make the earth suitable for us, why aren't we concentrating on adapting us to the earth? If something does happen and people die because we didn't do anything about moving them out of harms way, whose head is that on? There doesn't seem to be any effort in that direction.
  • Why should THEY care? It's only the RICH people with their BEACHFRONT property who will need to move...
But noooooo.... it's their opportunity to do income redistribution on a massive scale, and they must seize it.
  • it ain't the pants..........................
BRIANA.............it ain't the pant that make you butt look big.......

it's your head up your rectum that makes your butt look big......if that 115 lb woman drives a SUV to her woohoo doctor......it's becuz she can and she's happy when she runs over a green turd and doesn't even feel it......try that in your stinkin' prious......

you can get your head out by using pressurized frejole gas......
  • Plant and oxygen
Good post, booger, but I would just pick one nit. Plants use CO2 (and water) to produce carbohydrates (sugar, mostly). 6(CO2) + 6(H2O) produces C6H12O6 + 6(O2). Oxygen is a waste product, and is corrosive and poisonous in high partial pressures.

Plants would actually be better off if they weren't swimming in this waste gas. Think of it -- without oxygen there could be no forest fires.
  • Oh and by the way
Just a side note, all you Greenies do know that water vapor is a MUCH more potent greenhouse gas. Maybe we should start putting caps on people boiling water...

Related question: What happens when you increase the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere?

  • Drives Me Crazy
First I want to say that it drives me crazy whenever I hear someone say "Let's save the Earth." I'm sorry, but the Earth doesn't need to be saved. I guarantee that after all life has been eradicated that the Earth will still be here. What these people need to say is "save the humans from extinction."

With that said, taking care of the Earth is definitely a prudent choice to make. I mean most people keep a clean house, so why wouldn't they want a clean lawn/city/state/country/world? However, we have to be reasonable about it, and divorce ourselves from emotionalism. If a lot of these "environmentalists" really did want to clean up the planet they would advocate for more nuclear power instead of demonizing an economic system.

Yes climate change is a natural cycle of the planet, but you know that's never stopped humans from attempting to change things before. Hell, we have resources allocated to look for objects that could hit the Earth and wipe us all out in the vain hope we could stop THAT from happening.

I'm not an expert in the field of climate change, but I am surrounded by people that know more than most. I have two brothers with advanced degrees in geology/geoscience, a sister that is a meteorologist, a wife that is a biologist, and I am an astrophysicist. My personal opinion is that we DON'T know what is causing our climate to change, but I do think it's pretty dang arrogant to think we could screw up the planet. However, if we did the Earth would just kick us in the teeth and keep on going.
  • Funny
Evidence that global warming is a scientific fraud is released all over the internet = a huge public outcry, more people have their non-global warming belief confirmed.

Similarly evidence has been released time and again that data is omitted or falsified in favor of evolution = quietly swept under the rug

    www.icr.org
  • Hey Briana F.
how about saving the earth and turning your computer off...you are wasting precious resources.
  • re: Greg Dunham
Also consider that Venus is more than a quarter of an AU (astronomical unit=1 Earth distance) closer to the sun and has the most nearly circular of any planetary orbit in our solar system (0.0068) compared to Earth's (0.0167). It also has the slowest rotation (243 Earth days for the planet to rotate once) of any planet and is also retrograde (it spins in the opposite of its rotation around the sun).
This all means that as a planet, its proximity to the sun has caused the massive heat build-up and its relatively static behavior has allowed the perfect climate for a planet-wide CO2 buildup, also called the runaway greenhouse.

Mars is half again as far from the sun as is Earth. It is also much less massive (6.4219e23 kg compared to Earth's 5.972e24 kg) and cannot hold its atmosphere (it will eventually lose this atmosphere, in fact). Its distance and thin atmosphere make for a poor greenhouse and thus the cold temperatures.

Earth is located in what has been called the Habitable Zone around Sol, which is the theorized distance where a planet can maintain liquid water, and therefore, life as we know it. The wobble mentioned in Bloom's article likely put the planet in the cooler or warmer reaches of this zone at times and cause fluxes in the global temperature of Earth.

The percentage of carbon dioxide, which is vital to Earth's life and an integral part to the atmosphere of every terrestrial world (except Mercury) in our solar system, need not even be considered to understand that planetary temperatures are affected by forces far greater than atmospheric composition.
  • What next?
oxygen in large concentrations is harmful to our health...I think the EPA should add it to there list too.
  • Why should the earth's air be filled with the CO2 being pumped from an SUV hauling one 115lb woman to the gynecologist?
And the plants and trees use the CO2 to produce oxygen. Is oxygen a pollutant? When will you Greenie's understand that the Earth's atmosphere is does not change. The Earth's atmosphere is a layer of gases surrounding the planet Earth that is retained by the Earth's gravity. It contains roughly (by molar content/volume) 78.08% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide, trace amounts of other gases, and a variable amount (average around 1%) of water vapor. These percentages have not changed except in minuscule amounts due to changes in forestation, volcanic activity, and changes in water vapor amounts due to changes in trapped ice.
  • Correction to Greg Dunham @ 12/18/09
The earth's atmoshere CO2 level is 0.039% (yes, te decimal is correct). The O2 level is 20.95% (the value you quoted for CO2).
  • It's time to get involved folks 2.
Like others are asking, what do you suggest?

Personally, I'm all for government spending the money for research on the scale we did when we decided to go to the moon, for a project that will find an economical, non-polluting, renewable energy source. I want it not because I believe in global warming but I want the pollution gone from the earth.

Even those that believe global warming is a scam, will admit that the poison we spew into the air can't be good for our health or environment.

I can assure you, despite what the oil companies say, they have no interest in replacing fossil fuels as man's energy source of choice. Their investments in research is merely a political token gesture.

Also, if we can replace oil with something we can produce in the US, then Venezuela, Iran and Middle-Eastern countries won't have money to fund terrorism. It will change the power balance in this world.

    We can start here: http://www.theorionproject.org/en/index.html

Truth be known, we already have technologies better than solar, wind and biofuels that would give us all the energy the world will ever need that is non-polluting and cheap. We've had it since the 30's.

Get involved in making our government divulge what they have discovered long ago.
  • Also lets not forget continental drift
The continents are moving around a lot too. There are changes in the terraforming of the earth, and how that affects convection in the oceans and from there, the atmosphere. I have no clue how fast the process moves, but it is bound to have effects too. And some of these affects, like the Christmas Tsunami several years ago, can be devastating.
  • It's time to get involved folks.
The scientific method is quiet, timid - almost lacking in confidence in its cautious approach to prove or disprove "the hypothesis".
The non-scientific method is raucous, hysterical, and emotional to the point of self induced and infectious panic.
In a world where most people cannot manipulate mathematical problems beyond the most basic addition of single or double digits, the message of the non-scientific sector lands firmly on the ears of a very gullible majority when it comes to the [any] sciences.

You won't put one past them on Grammy, Emmy, or Oscar winners - won't sneak any dirt about celebs by the folks who sit on the edge of their couch, biting their nails, wondering if Tiger's divorce is really "100% on" (they're "on it", you see), and just try to bamboozle them on what's going on with "the housewives". They'll tell you "what is and what for" on that!

But tell them the world is burning to a cinder even as we speak, and they turn their open drooling mouths up to the falling rain, demonstrating not a hint of any non-programmed intelligence whatsoever.

What would you have us do Neal? Get involved? The only thing I can think of is to start beating up these retards or hope it starts raining really really hard while they're standing there looking up into the rainfall.
  • Uniformity vs. Catastrophe
Much of modern geology is based on the principle of Uniformity, probably because it better supports the theory of evolution. However, the earth bears the scars of major catastrophes, and there will always be the next one.

I've been recommending a 1950's book called "Earth in Upheaval" that describes geological findings that even today have no explanation.

It's impossible to read this book and still think that man's impact is anything to worry about.
  • the bottom line
The zenith, the apex, the long and short, the distillation, the essence, the kernel of all the climate change discussion is simply the government handing us a new invoice to pay. Its the only known quantity in all the hot air of this topic.
  • We must be careful
we must heed the words of John Adams. "But a Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty, once lost, is lost forever."
    John Adams
  • Times change
I know conservatives live in the past, but in case you dont know times have changed vastly since the past. Obviously what wasnt caused by man a million years ago can now be caused by man in the present. This is simple stuff, I shouldnt have to explain it.
  • Don't Cloud the Issue with Facts!
    Neal,

You know the warmers don't want to here factual data; data is to be manipulated to tell the appropriate story, not to show the actual nature of the universe...just ask the folks at the University of East Anglia.
  • Earth Factoids
Another little set of factoids no one pushing "global warming" mentions is that the atmosphere of Venus is made up of 96.5% CO2 and is very very HOT - Mars is nearly identical at 95.32% CO2 and is very very COLD - Earth is currently only 20.94% and just right. How is the difference in temperature between Venus and Mars explained, if CO2 is supposed to be the culprit? Their CO2 content is nearly identical, yet their temperatures are vastly different. That should lead a thinking person to surmise that carbon dioxide may not be a factor in so called "global warming" or "climate change" even if they don't take into account the fact that climate has done nothing but change since the Earth was formed.
  • Obama, I knew Charlemagne and your no Charlemagne
Around the year 800 a man named Karl der Grosse was crowned holy emperor of the roman empire by pope Leo III and that man became know as Charlemagne, the uniter of europe who created relative peace in the middle ages. The story goes that he was raised to a godlike status by others much to his displeasure so to show others, and maybe himself, that he wasn't god,he went to the ocean shoreline and ordered the tides to stop.Failing to stop the tides showed his worshipers that he was only a man,and man can't stop nature.sound familiar? The times have changed but holy emperor Obama has his people praising him as the uniter of the europe, the world, savior of mankind but this time the emperor believes he can do it, control the tides, unite the world,be ruler of nature.Charlemagne was know for his wisdom, piety and brutality.Obama will be known for what?his ego? Uniter of the world in poverty?
  • AGW
its just another example of pols leading lemmings to the cliff. stupid people will continually buy snake oil.
  • The Earth and science
There's really no need to bring science into this issue, especially when we know that scientists can be bought. What we need to realize is that the earth is a living entity with a soul, and our lack of respect for the earth is basically causing the planet to cry out to us to stop our ways. Let it heal. The earth gives us our life and we should honor it. Instead we treat it like an old soda bottle.

You all need to stop obeying what Neal tells you and think for yourselves. This has nothing to do with socialism, all we greens want is for the national government of the world to take possession of the means of production and distribute those good equally so that the economy can be run in the most efficient, earth-respecting way possible. Does anyone really need 3 flat screen TVs? I don't think so. For example, why should the earth be forced to deal with the pollution involved in their construction when so many have none? Why should the earth's air be filled with the CO2 being pumped from an SUV hauling one 115lb woman to the gynecologist?

Maybe to the stupid this sounds like socialism, but for the rest of us this is just common sense regulations to keep people from doing stupid and selfish things so that we can leave behind a planet for the next generation.
  • Global Warming
Neal has made an excellent distilled version of the earth's history with all it's variations of climate and other upheavals. Why can't the "warmers" look at this info from an objective point of view? Perhaps we should start a separate "scare" theory relating to the earth's "wobble" and say that in 10 years we will leave the orbit around the sun. Maybe that will distract people from the global warming problem.
