... doing what? Carrying water for the teacher's unions, that's what.

Here's the story: There's a voucher system in Washington DC. About 1,700 DC students are participating. These students are excelling. Their reading and math scores are way above those of students trapped in the abysmal DC government schools.

The students and parents just love the voucher system. The teacher's unions absolutely HATE it. Now usually teacher's unions attack voucher programs on the basis that the programs take money away from government schools. They can't use this argument here because the DC voucher system is funded by the federal government. The actual result is that the DC schools have even more money per student after the voucher students bail.

Well ... it didn't seem to matter that the teacher's unions had no real argument against the DC voucher program. We all know what the true argument was. The teacher's union is scared to death that the private schools are going to make them look bad. Competition is poison to teacher's unions. So the voucher system had to be killed.

Who came to the rescue? None other than Illinois Senator Dick Durbin. Remember that $1.1 trillion dollar spending program passed over the weekend? Durban had a very quiet little amendment hiding in that bill. The amendment killed all funding for the DC voucher program. Durbin's Christmas gift for teacher's unions.

Don't you just love these Democrats? They care so much for our children, don't they?

A friend of mine at OU, a very mild-mannered, shy girl with the last name "Dick" was named 'Anita'.
  • Die in Hell
    News Flash.....
Dick Durbin, like so many Liberas is likely to "Die in Hell." Durbin supports corrupt teachers unions rather than ensuring that our kids are educated. Dick Durbin you are a pox upon our society!!!
  • Why does the community (African American) that does so well by this program continue to vote for those (democrats) who oppose it?
  • Durbin
"Dick Durbin before he dicks you."
  • re: @farbar
oh snap, farbar! when you made your false claim, did you honestly think he didn't say it and you just didn't bother to check or did you know he did but somehow didn't realize you'd get busted on it?

    step up your game, son.

and who's this hotsauce who seems to know so much about me but I've never seen post in here before? don't hide behind a new name. what name do you normally use? and what do you mean "if?" as if he will make good on his word someday? ha! good one.
  • Neal
You said "aptly named"! Freakin' hilarious.

  • Dick
I have to stand up for Mr Durban.Look guys, don't be too hard on him.Poor Dick does not have the experience or intelligence required for the job he is in.After all, like Obama,he has never done anything other than government employee. At least ole'big ears obama did teach Fascism to young minds in school.Poor Dick doesn't even have that accomplishment.

  • Stop funding a program that works?
So the question is simple...Why would any sane person stop funding a program that is effective? Especially one that benefits the liberals favorite target....Children. It should be obvious that Dick didn't not consider what was in the best interest of the children when he pulled this scam. Do you think Obama knows this was in the bill and does he even care?

Gotta love the mediocrity that Unions spread...
  • Why private school vs. public in vouchers
I'll tell you why, it comes down to discipline. When a child has the chance to learn their lessons with a peaceful environment, quiet time in reading and writing, and when working with the teachers in small groups there can be a greater learning ability when the rest of the class in engaged in calm learning. I'm sorry to say that doesn't happen in much of the inner city schools. If a student acts up too many times in a private school kick them out. If a student does that in public school, unfortunately nothing can really happen. Our whimpy federal government schools won't but the blame of obnoxious kids on the parents to deal with. Alot of parents today can't disciple worth a crap. A peaceful enviroment is where students who are doing well as this piece states is why people get upset. Most of the teachers in public school can get their students to just as well as private school students in grades, but the public school environment of chaos and bullying will not make the grade. Just to end this comment...Homeschooling: why do most of the students do well...learn in a calm and peaceful environment.

  • Durbin, the Dick
I called during the middle of the day 3 times last week to Durbins office... I got some lame recording to call back during regular hours...

So, then I called Serrano's office to inquire of the Senator of the "why" of his position... they did not know why he was supporting this position... So, when I began to outline briefly the 3 reasons to support these scholarships... the line went dead.

Called back, different person for a while and then the first person got conferenced in... suddenly, the line went dead again.

    Senators.. .thanks for listening.. NOT
  • GAVIN
You have some problems. The first thing you say in the morning once you wake must be "F#$&#* Hannity!" am I wrong?
    You are obsessed.
If he ever actually waterboards himself, will you be able to keep your pants on?
  • For Gavin
"BTW, anyone have an update on Hannity's promise to undergo waterboarding in order to raise money for the families of the troops? Considering it's been what? -- 8 months? -- and Christmas is right around the corner, I'm sure he will make good on his promise soon."

Latest update: Hannity never said it, so he can't promise it.
  • Unions
History: 23 years in unionized work enviroment ... 9 years hourly ... 14 management... 3 different states... 8 different contracts... negotiated on 2 contracts from hourly position ... 2 contracts from management position.
Realistically, unions are nothing more than collectives that align their ranks with the weakest, most unproductive and the most belligerent members of a designated or specific workforce. Yes, in the past they have hammered some strong benefits and wage packages for their members in the United Auto Workers, just like they did for the United Steel Workers and the United Mine Workers Association.
How long have those industries been on the declining arc?

    Hourly Members pay the unions, "the middle men", for the right to work in a specific company. In turn, the unions will exert every effort to save the jobs of people who committ dischargeable offenses or endanger the safety of others; they often encourage members to file fraudulent workers comp claims; they sell out the newer members for the benefits and wages of the more senior members; they work out negotiations with companies behind closed doors- "off the table";
the administrative union staff use dishonesty and "fear" to coerce membership in "right-to-work" states; and administrative union officials expect "rank and file" to tow the line on union business without compensation from the union.
Typical American labor unions are rampantly wasteful; easily corruptible; and dutifully loyal to their national or international boards.
    Sounds like the Federal Gov't!
  • Bad Aim
    Wrong target NOTW,

Dick Durbin is supporting the unions. That's what Neal is writing about. At least try to stay on subject. I know that's hard for someone that changes names every day, but please try to hold on to that last vestige of intelligence.
  • Carrying water
If people who carry water for the Democrats are aptly named Dick, what is an apt name for those who carry water for Republicans? Neal? Sean? Gland Beck?

BTW, anyone have an update on Hannity's promise to undergo waterboarding in order to raise money for the families of the troops? Considering it's been what? -- 8 months? -- and Christmas is right around the corner, I'm sure he will make good on his promise soon.
  • Unions??
You mean the unions are trying to support the people they represent??? STOP THE PRESSES!!! This is front page news of an obvious nature.
  • Double secret standard, ala Dick
Isn't it Democrats who preach to the rest of us about competition making healthcare better? But not education?
  • Vile
The Dems absolute obeisance to the unions is one of the bigger threats to our Republic. Government workers now comprise the majority of union employees in this country. And they're voting themselves more and more money. Did you see the report on how much government salaries rose in the 2000's?
  • from Illinois
Durbin is from Illinois. Nothing more to say. hint hint, wink wink, nod nod.
  • Durbin Dustbin
Would that the families this corrupt jackass has stiffed could move to Illinois, just so they could vote against this clown.

Of course, Illinois = Chicago = rigged elections.
