An email from a Dunwoody doctor about his memorable trip to a government school event.

I just returned from the "Holiday" musical performance by the 5th grade at the brand new state of the art Dunwoody (Atlanta Suburb) Elementary school where my granddaughter attends. Until now I wasn't totally convinced about your rants on "government" schools, but tonight convinced me you are right on. We listened to an hour of "music" which consisted of banging on bongos and sticks, chanting, and incomprehensible "singing" of traditional "Trinidad" and other third world noise. The parents in the room applauded for the children, as they should, since it wasn't their fault the musical director (a poster child for politically correct crap) put together a program of incredibly incoherent jungle music which even the kids (white, Asian, black, Hispanic) appeared embarrassed to be performing. Not a Christmas or traditional Holiday song anywhere in the mix. I told my daughter if that had been her and her siblings attending this school, I would have jerked them out of that environment the next morning. It wasn't her fault so I probably shouldn't have said it, but I was so infuriated it just came out. From the looks I saw on some parents' faces, I think they felt no different.

There; I got it off my chest. Boy am I pissed.

Yup ... another convert.

What others are saying

  • I was there
I was at the school that night and have daughter who was singing. My first thought was why do we always seems to have to embrace certain cultures over and over again at the expense of celebrating our own culture? I was not offended, but it seem to be more political correctness and further eroding of our own unique American culture.
  • What did you expect?
This is why my children will NEVER step foot in a government school.

To Get over it... if government schools are so great, why don't politicians sent their kids to public schools? I think it's for the same reason they refuse to fall under Obama care if it passes... this reason being that these "programs" are crap.
  • medication
We should put our kids in a little box, tell them to only say and do what we did and never let them have any opinions or experiences which differ from their parents/grandparents - what an extremely dull world that would be. Like listening to the same song over and over and over...... Regardless of whether you liked the music or not, should the kids have some exposure to instruments and music from other cultures or is white, christian music the only way to go? For the poeple who actually did attend the event, there were holiday songs. Perhaps the Dunwoody Doctor had over medicated....
  • Jonny.....
    [QUOTE]...."I Goofed
I was up late. The title should be

    THEY'RE CHILDREN"

WEll.........if you 'goofed' in a freaking forum.......I can just imagine how you would 'goof' in the courtroom.....

But you ARE right.....you ARE a 'goof'....
  • Christmas and other Holiday celebrations
My kids both attend DODDS schools in Europe, also Government schools, on a Military Installation. One difference of DODDS schools to Stateside Gov' Schools, I walked into my sons school yesterday, to see a fully decorated Christmas Tree!In the center of the school lobby!Loved it!Also, YES, on Halloween this year,my son's classroom had a HALLOWEEN party! We got to use the word,"Halloween"and next Friday,we will give a "Christmas Party" to the class. Also, he has learned all our good ol' American favorites such as,"Yankee Doodle Dandy" and sings it proudly with the class! Love it!
  • Holiday Program
I sear this guy entered a portal in time and attended the one my child was involved in five years ago. Gee, that was not long before she became home schooled.
  • Degrading our standards?
“Music to swat flies by”. As soon as I change my wet pants from laughing, I’m going to finish reading the comments. It looks like many people missed the e-mail’s whole point. The “music” sucked. Every other thing that people are arguing about is just BS.
    So much human baggage.
The point I see the Doctor making is that “jungle drums” aren’t in the same universe as “Oh, Come All Ye Faithful”.
Isaac Watts and Lowell Mason had “Joy To The World” in mind and were inspired. Heavenly music verses primitive earthly noise from the dirt.
Sorry, but all sound is not “equal”.
Someone mentioned Russian music that they were not familiar with?
    Speaking of Russian:
Surely Tchaikovsky made sweet music for the Christmas season..
Unless you are a cracked nut.
  • JEFF said "Music to swat flies by"
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha !!!!!!!!!!

(ok. I'm going stright to hell.)
  • To Catseye about Music
Kids who learn music actually do better in math and science, so scrapping music programs would be a waste. Music enables the brain to more easily do abstract thought, which is essential in math. Moreover, playing music with a depth of understanding makes us more HUMAN. If everyone in the world were musicians, it would be a better place.
  • Well if the school had....
advertised their program as "Music To Swat Flies By" then no one would have shown up...therefore they called it Holiday music...very sneaky.
  • Johnny still missing the point
    @Jeremy
No, I think you're "Missing the Point". If we didn't have any "foreign" music we wouldn't have the so called Christmas Carols that we have today. So, yeah, lets ban all foreign music.

You all just cannot stand that we teach kids concepts of being accepting of each other's differences. Sure, you want to teach them to all be KKK members, but now we're teaching them to be responsible productive people. You all want to stick in the stone ages. Sure, let's go back to 1787.. no cars, no electricity. Hey there's an idea. Anyone who wants to abide by the old white guy's constitution can do without all modern conveniences.
    By Johnny @ 12/10/09

If you want to be diverse then have all kinds. Why was traditional Christmas music left out completely?

ANSWER the question instead of running off crying 'ya well you ....'.
  • I haven't seen
If you think about it for second, if it weren't for CHRISTMAS, none of this would be an issue. It just so happens that this is the CHRISTMAS time of the year in this country. So if you don't want to celebrate CHRISTMAS and its traditions then LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE. Can't we that enjoy the tradition just be left alone to enjoy TRADITION without losing that to the malcontents as well just because it's NOT FAIR or politically correct? Eff that. Christmas has been tradition in THIS country since it was founded and is part of the reason it WAS founded. It's Christmas, for Gods sake. I want to hear CHRISTMAS music. Not some effen 'holiday' music from effedupistan just because some lame liberal gubmint educator that we pay to 'educate' wants to.
I was in band during some of my gubmint education. That was long ago. We learned stuff.
AND WE PLAYED CHRISTMAS MUSIC, DAMMIT!
    BTW - I'm atheist.
  • Johnny, if you're worried about KKK, will you be speaking out against Democrat Senator Robert Byrd, the Klan Kleagle?
  • @Jimmy Dolan aka Heisman Trophy today
Um...there is NO WAY you went to any half-way respectable law school. You are dumber than a broken lamp post. Sorry.. I call bs on that one.
  • Diversity = Black
My 3rd grader did the same thing. The program featured a song described as a Traditional African Holiday song. Traditional my a$$.

OK, we all know that when someone calls for supporting diversity, they are not talking about the rich Asian computer programmer who graduated with a 4.0 from MIT. In the (few) areas where Whites are under-represented such as pro sports, they are not talking about increasing the number of token crackers on the team. They are not looking to recruit Hispanics or Jews. It is about BLACK, folks. Black, Black, Black.

    There. I said it.

For example, The Diversity Nazi in my company is in charge of minority recruiting efforts and specifically stated that the new minority recruiting program is specifically designed to hire Black people. Not Indigenous-Americans, not Differently-Abled, not Jewish-Centric, not Alternatively-Lifestyled, not Domestic-Persians, not Vegans, not Code Pink Moonbats. It is about BLACK.
  • @mattisben
you said, "The irony is that the kids from non-property owning households cause disproportionate added expenses - for things like metal detectors and security."

    WOW!

is there a statistic to back up your claim or are you racist to the bone?
  • Govment Skoos
if a presidential candidate would run on improving education, they would get my vote.i know what neal says about dumbing the masses.with a top notch education in this country,we wouldnt need to waiste our tax dollars on ss,socialized meds, food stamps, cash for clunkers, epa, etc, etc, etc.we would be WAY to intelligent to put up with that crap.glad my kids are grown and doing better than i did at their age.
  • @Jeremy

do the home work and start your own "home" skools.......or stop the whinin'..........

  • stop degrading other cultures
I understand the frustration. Holiday performances should be about .... wait for it ... the holidays!

But you lose all credibility (and given the otherside tons of ammo) when you say things like:
    1. "jungle music"
    2."singing" of traditional "Trinidad"
    3. other third world noise

Just say I want to hear x-mas music - not degrade the type of music played as being "noise" or from the "junge" ... its no wonder people think conservatives as racists ... listen to yourselves ... judged a book by the cover - i think this guy is racists ...
  • holy crap................................
they had sticks in a gubmint skool???????

zero tolerance.......sumbuddy could put an eye out!!!!!!
  • winter concert
i wonder if it is the "winter music program" on dunwoody elementary school's calendar.
    http://tinyurl.com/yjkgskq
the name doesn't seem to promise holiday music.
  • Missing the Point
A lot of you who say 'he just needs to get over it' are missing the point. Complaining about Third World Noise as music is one thing, but his main problem is that this was a HOLIDAY concert! It was advertised as a HOLIDAY (read: Christmas) concert, and instead of what the majority of us, and children, would understand as Christmas music, he got music from foreign countries. If it was a concert for 'worldly' music, that's perfectly fine, and I think encouraged.. but not when it's a HOLIDAY concert!
  • ANOTHER CONVERT
So Heisman Trophy grew up in Dunwoody and thinks I grew up in a small town? I actually grew up in Avondale, which certainly is no metropolis, but it makes Dunwoody (when did it become a city?)look like an afterbirth. I raised my three kids in Dunwoody, but the public schools were so lousy I moved them to Westminster early on. I applaud diversity, but this was insulting.
  • @Johnny
How do you know these kids do not get diversity at home? Assumptions are not facts and should not be used to lead to fix conclusion.
What is your definition of diversity? Replacing the countries norms and culture with foreign culture is not diversity, it is loosing ones identity. Diversity is not something that can be forced; it is natural like the air you breathe. The problem with Americans sometime is that we are not patient and do not plan for the long run. We want everything to happen in the now regardless of the ill effects. Look at how far we have come as people since the conception of the U.S.; some for the better (e.g. judging people on their character not skin color or origin) and some for the worse (e.g. complete disregard of our Constitution in some cases and the dismantling of freedom or demonization of their bread and butter (American businesses)).

Public school can work but the parents must be involved. I know this because I went to public school. My PhD parent, a lifetime educator, was on top of all my studies and personally thought me every summer before school started. Of course my parent believes proper education will set you free and learning is a lifetime activity not just done while in school. Self-Education is also a key part of learning. Public school is not always the best vehicle for diversity because some of the diversity that exist there may go against the parents morals, ethics, and believes or down right wrong. I am a naturalized American so public school helped me to understanding American norms and cultures (it was important for me to assimilate to the U.S.). I don't have kids now but when I am able they probably won’t go to public school; from observations, I believe the quality of public school education has further decreased since my involvement. I blame all involve in public school for its failure. We don't expect the best from the students, we are satisfied with the average and never push them to achieve. I fair better in Public school because I wanted to learn and make something of myself--I did not need external stimuli or bribes from my parents or teachers to achieve-I strived for achievement because I knew it will likely lead to independence and freedom.
  • What really needs to be done
This PC baloney will never get better until those who run the show are no longer running the show or are made aware of their errors.

That being said, if you can afford private school, go for it. If you can't afford private school, make sure the teachers and principal are aware of your concerns.

BE POLITE. If you go in ranting and raving, you will be dismissed as a lunatic.

DO NOT MAKE STATEMENTS. Ask questions. "Why are the kids singing these songs? What happened to traditional holiday songs? Are we sacrificing one culture for another? Aren't we supposed to hold all cultures at the same level? Doesn't this musical program exclude one culture's songs in favor of another?" When you ask questions, you force the "educator" to form an answer. When you make a declaration, you force the "educator" to simply refute you.

GET AS MANY OTHERS TO DO THE SAME. A single voice will accomplish nothing. If you do not have time in your day for a face to face visit, get on the phone and send the emails.

DO NOT MAKE IDLE THREATS. If you are polite and you get dismissed any way, contact Mike Adams on townhall. He can set you up with an attorney who will hear your side and file suit on your behalf if the situation has merit.

The lefties use the same tactic. Use their own ammo against them.
  • Maybe we should get over it!
You know maybe the libtards are right in this one like statement. Maybe it is time to “get over it”. There is no way we will ever get rid of the government schools. Face it, they won’t go away! So let’s take the curriculum back! Dump the PC manure, dump the” you aren’t responsible for your own actions” mentality and get them back to the basics!

The liberal scum grabbed control of the schools because education is important! Quit bitching about how bad they are and take them back!
  • reHeisman
So...you went to law school? When are you gonna drop the Playboys and leave your mother's basement long enough to take the bar?
  • A Multicutural point of view on U.S. diversity craziness
The problem with diversity in the U.S. is that we are forcing it on people instead of letting it happen naturally. Forcing people to accept something goes against freedom. Some who love freedom and diversity may take issue with the way diversity is being introduced in the U.S. and rebel (which I applaud). No one should be force into something regardless of whether they agree with that something or not.

I mean what "holiday" were they celebrating in the musical? How can you have a "holiday" music in the U.S. and completely omit the U.S holiday that is being celebrated? I can see maybe incorporating one set of how others celebrated the "holiday" but making the entire sets of the musical about something other than what the U.S. is celebrating at this time, is completely absurd? If she wanted to put on a musical for the celebration of holidays around the world then why not call it "A Musical for Holidays around the World"?

I don't know what is happening to the U.S. Are all the reasonable and logical citizens dying out? If so, we are in big trouble. If you can’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.
  • Christmas music
While attending high school, our band would play a piece entitled "Russian Christmas Music". Didn't sound like any Christmas music I ever heard, but we enjoyed playing it. So much so, we played it during an Easter concert and called it "Russian Easter Music", No one but us knew the truth,
  • My 11 year old daughter
Not having any real choice in schooling, my daughter attends the local government school. We live in a rural area, thus not much in the way of private schools from which to choose.
Anyway, yesterday she relates to me a story from her school day. She is in 6th grade and one of the things they do is a computer program called "Study Island." She was working on the literature part and the story that came up was titled something along the lines of, "How he got there: the Nation's greatest president, Barak Obama." My daughter said she turned to her neighbor and said, "Oh, we get to read fiction." Just because she goes to a government school, doesn't mean she doesn't recognize crap when she sees it. I was so proud. :-)
  • Cost
What is the TAXPAYER cost of each student in Atlanta and the surrounding areas: $10-13K a year? I can only imagine if vouchers were allowed.
  • Government Schools-PC Holidays Indoctrination
Saw something like this last Friday night on the local news. They were at a local grocery store covering the Toys for Tots campaign and showed a group of students from a nearby high school performing a couple of “songs” they had been taught. The first of the two was a Nigerian song, complete with the drums and sticks, etc. The Marine didn't look too thrilled about it.
  • Take whatever courses you want, I dont care
They are children. I didnt take any real law courses until I went to Law school. The ones in undergrad were a joke and if you were paying attention in high school then you are just abnormal. These are children. Who cares? I grew up in Dunwoody which is 110% nicer than the small town that this guy who emailed Boortz grew up in.
  • Johnny get a brain
    Get over it...
    Neal,

Get over it. This guy needs to as well. The musical director was just trying to teach the kids diversity, which is something they don't get at home. Get over it, govrnment schools are far better at rounding out our kids than anything else. Homeschooling and private schooling should be illegal.
    By Johnny

WHERE was the diversity? If truly diverse, they should have included Christian and Jewish songs for the holiday. This was one sided, it sucked and you need to get over yourself!
  • My name is Santa and ...
...enough of the 'political correctness' crap! How do liberals manage to stay upright and not bump into things? If we bend over backwards any further, we'll all be doing the limbo and I don't need to tell you how ugly that could get!
  • Johnny
According to Johnny, our children MUST be taught diversity. He decides how you and I must raise our children. Freedom should be illegal.

You win! A friend works for a company that demands you attend diversity classes or be fired. Freedom is illegal.

My company is having a "Holiday Celebration" and I bet no one boycotts it. Christmas is illegal.

Churches cannot preach using the Bible (offends homosexuals). Freedom is illegal.

People who believe abortion is murder must pay taxes to fund abortions. Freedom is illegal.
  • more gov schools
Government schools are also one of the largest wealth redistribution scams. Property owners are forced to pay for the education of non-property owners. More "Robin Hood" economics designed to punish those who actually do something with their lives. The irony is that the kids from non-property owning households cause disproportionate added expenses - for things like metal detectors and security.
  • Dunwoody doc
The Dunwoody doc needs not to be so high strung over a music program at school. Caribbean music is very pleasant to listen to if you'd just open you mind up just a little. Third world noise?
  • You are correct, HT
I have tried and tried over the years but must admit I just can't play sticks. Oh, if only I had been exposed to it and taught to play when I was young. instead of wasting all that time on math, english, foreign languages, business, law and other such useless courses.
  • gov schools
It is impossible to teach without imposing some form of morals. Morals are usually defined by a person's religious or secular (which the Supremes have found to be "religious") beliefs. So, government schools are a direct violation of the establishment clause. Maybe that is the reason that government education was not mentioned in the framing of the Constitution.
  • I never heard such a blatant disgust for freedom and individual choice
"Homeschooling and private schooling should be illegal."

Wow. I hope you were just kidding. If not, then you really don't want liberty, do you. If that is case, please move to one of the other countries, like Cuba, where freedom is not provided.

What other things should we start making illegal? What about quotas of watching government provided television? We can't leave you on your own to pick what shows you watch! You must watch the "right shows" in order to rounded out and diverse.

And are you eating diverse foods? We need to have government run stores, that issue quota cards. "Third time buying frozen pizza? Sorry, but that exceeds your quota. Purchase denied."

Anything else we need to make illegal? Too bad stupidity isn't!
  • I Goofed
I was up late. The title should be

    THEY'RE CHILDREN
  • gov't schools
Johnny is obviously a product of the gov't school system. Rearing my children is my responsibility, not the gov't.
  • Mind cloning
I can commiserate with the Dunwoody Dad. I’ve been there and done that back in the nineties. We took our daughter home to school. Anyone considering this option should remain well aware that the left still produces the propaganda ridden politically correct text books you’ll be delivered. It’s sad that most people in this country continue to lead their innocent children into the Government School system like dumb strays to be branded. Look at the state of our nation today. Look at what we put into office. Get along little doggies. Serfs up.
  • Agree with Russ ExNavy
Russ is right on. It's so simple I wonder why I never thought of that term.

I also notice the coherence and lack of shrieking/whining in this letter compared to the letters Neal gets from the lefties. Even pissed this guy can write without sounding like an angry teenager.
  • Johnny, F*** diversity!
Forced diversity is one of the worst things this country has ever had to endure. Anybody with a sense of learning or discovery can seek out diversity, but why should it be forced on anyone?

It's all a sham anyway since liberals' concept of diversity is as follows: ANYTHING THAT DOES NOT COME FROM THE WHITES IS DIVERSE!
Our schools are a joke and because our p.c. crowd is so intent on being anything other than 'white,' our students don't LEARN. Our schools are miserable compared with much of the rest of the world.
  • Hoo boy!
HOO BOY! That Jungle music line isn't going to go over well with the social justice crowd.
  • THEIR CHILDREN
Most adults will find it difficult to learn music and/or how to play a musical instrument. This guy is complaining about a whole class full of kids learning a musical instrument. I dont care who anybody voted for in this article, this guy needs to get a life and stop being angry at the world.
  • School Curriculum
The question I would ask is why is there "music class" in the schools to begin with. American students are falling behind the rest of the world in reading, science, and math.

I think we really need to question the amount of time being devoted to arts, music, phy ed and other mushy gushy stuff. Make these things after-school clubs (with maximum 2 hours per week) instead of classes taking up precious time during the academic day. Except maybe require phy ed for the fat kids.
  • Perfect name...
I love the reference "third world noise"...Now I know the proper terminology for rap, or hip-hop "Music".
  • gov't schools
Good email! I have 2 grown, productive, patriotic, have read the Constitution, children who have NEVER attended a gov't school. It was one of the best investments I have ever made. Son, working on his 2nd Masters Degree, daughter, most of her nursing credits.
  • Get over it...
    Neal,

Get over it. This guy needs to as well. The musical director was just trying to teach the kids diversity, which is something they don't get at home. Get over it, govrnment schools are far better at rounding out our kids than anything else. Homeschooling and private schooling should be illegal.
