TERRIBLE NEWS FOR RHODE ISLAND

I don't remember why this was ever brought to my attention, but Rhode Island has long remained the only state in the nation (other than parts of Nevada) where indoor prostitution is legal. Or I guess I should say "was" legal. The state has officially closed a loophole from a 1980 law that cracked down on prostitution solicitation in public, but said nothing about transactions in private. Rhode Island's governor says the new law as a step forward and said it ended Rhode Island's "terrible" distinction.

What others are saying

  • No, it had nothing to do with child prostitution
It had to do with "massage parlors" which operated legally because of the law. It was ridiculous that this loophole existed and it's even worse that it took 30 years to fix!
Hahahaha, the jokes about our size are amusing...especially coming from rednecks in GA. 95% of my high school class went to a 4 year college. The other 5% went into the military. What about you, GA?
  • @Joyce M/Blythe
The problem with linking prostitution with child prostitution is that child prostitution was already illegal, no matter what the law says about consenting adults.

It's one of those bogus emotional tie-ins; "won't somebody think of the children!"

There's no way the law could have been misinterpreted as to allow child prostitutes merely because it was not public, and it bodes along with other anti-prostitution propaganda.

Read some of the other responses... they are right; you can give it away, but you can't sell it. You can sell it if you're in front of a camera. Are you allowed to control your own body or not?

This is coming from someone who, despite having lived in Nevada for 7 years, never went to a pro and never intends to... it's all kind of... let's say "unpalatable" to me... but I've never thought the government had any right to restrict consenting adults from doing it.
  • @ Brian Fantana
Brian, you buy expensive dinners, flowers and jewelry? You are one luckly son of a bitch!
  • Why is it illegal to sell something that is perfectly legal to give away for free?
I most emphatically state that sex is NOT free.

As a divorced male, I've earned the right to say that the screwing I got wasn't worth the screwing I got.
  • Greetings from Nevada!
All are welcome to visit and leave your money here! Keeps my taxes down (well, if the legislature doesn't increase spending, lol).

I wouldn't want my wife working as a gun-for-hire in Iraq. Isn't this just between my wife and I. Further, what a dimwit to think that prostitution only happens when it is legal.
  • I don't understand
How people who support a woman's right to choose when it comes to killing her unborn baby can refuse her the right to choose to use that same body to produce income. If she were having sex for money with a video camera in the room, it would be called "art". I just don't understand.
  • More out of work
Just sounds like all that occured was to increase the amount of unemployed in RI...
  • prostitution
You can joke about it, but prostitution has never benefited any society.

Will your wife care if you use a prostitute? Would your teenage children benefit from prostitution, either using one or being one? Do you want your wife to bring home an income by being a prostitute?
  • No loss
I have relatives in Rhode Island and have been there many times. Believe me, you don't want anything they'd be selling in RI.
  • All women are prostitutes
Whether she is an actual prostitute, or yuou have to buy her an expensive dinner, flowers, jewlery, etc. all men pay money for sex
  • I Was Going To Move To Rhode Island
But I had to come back because I couldn't find it.
  • draksig@yahoo.com
As long as there are men willing to may for sex and women willing to take the money, there will be prostitution. Which is the victim? I have always said that prostitution is illegal becasue the government can't tax it. I agree with George Carlin on this one. Why is it illegal to sell something that is perfectly legal to give away for free? I know not many people here will agree with me.
  • Good
Rhode Island was also beginning to have the worst reputation for child prostitution, which I believe was the main factor in changing this law.
  • Rhode Island
I still fail to see how sex between two consenting adults should be illegal. More people out of work in a state with unemployment that is already 13%. Way to go.
  • terrible distinction
Was that the only thing that gave the state such a distinction? Doubt it.
  • Damn shame
All those lobbyists out of work...
  • guess i won't
    be moving
