"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that justifies it."

Yeah ... that's when the voters elected Barack Obama. If you've been scanning the Internet you've seen no shortage of news stories about disappointed - and sometimes disgusted - voters who actually thought they were voting for some type of wonderful change in Washington.

I think the retrospective on Obama's first year should really be saved until the one-year mark from his coronation, not the election. I will say this ... Obama has been far worse than I would have ever imagined. Any promises he made about transparency and bipartisanship in Washington have turned out to be a complete joke. He has shown absolutely no understanding of the role of capitalism and our free markets in the creation of our amazing standard of living in America. He has treated the Constitution as a nuisance rather than a blueprint for governance.

For many years I've been talking about politicians who believe that America's greatness comes from government. Obama is the embodiment of that principal.

Others have said this .. but Obama is completely in over his head. This is a job he was simply not prepared to handle. He became president not on the basis of accomplishment, but on the basis of charisma and a well-orchestrated campaign. His election was a crowning achievement of our system of government education. He certainly has the potential of destroying this country as we know it. The ballot box still works ... for now. I truly believe that 2010 may be the last chance we have to save our Republic from the likes of Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Rangel, Waxman, Hoyer and the rest of the statist crowd.

the link i provided just had video of republicans supporting individual mandates. not sure how much more you need - the people saying it, live - on Teevee.

You quote this "“The Framers created a limited government, thus ensuring that individuals would have the opportunity to become all that their talents and persistence would allow. The left has put aside the original Constitution in favor of a "living document" that they believe allows them to do whatever they want and demand more tax dollars with which to do it. “

as if it's not a good thing. Please walk me through how you can rationalize some amendments as good thus removing your argument that the constitution is not a "living document" and then point to other amendments as bad supporting your argument that it should be static?

you cant have it both ways.

Joyce - example of FAA at the state level...ummm...airports?? they regulate at the federal level how states can manage, build, and expand airports.

    imagine we're talking about banks....

again, you cant have it both ways
  • Mr. Fantana Loser
I would like to inform you that just because I live in a small town, which by the way has many buildings, does not make me a hick. It is arrogant, pompous people such as yourself that have an ignorant attitude about life. I am sure that most of us in my "small hick town" have more education than you and are obviously more informed. What a loser!
  • Looks like the conservative groundswell is..
beginning to turn the tide, and maybe a few disillusioned idealists (read: college students) have been hit in the face with the plank'o'reality about how the world outside their lib statist professor's classroom works. The people have laid the groundwork for another political revolution and era of cultural and economic growth as we saw with Reagan saving us from Carternomics. Now all us conservatives have to do is wait for the Libertarian and Republican leadership to screw it up again and the cycle will be complete.

    Executives for the executive branch.
The nation is a business, run it like one.

    Hell, Donald Trump 2012?
  • FAA
How do you figure it's administered at the state level? Are you talking about the Flight Standards District Office? Those are Federal, not state.

I don't see where states have any adminstration involving the FAA. Link please?
  • Re: snarkybird There is a big difference between those two references:Think statism and the Washington times, you should be able to figure it out.
The Cal Thomas piece merely bolsters some of the points I've been having to make over and over again – maybe because some is being Obtus.... never mind,
This was on readily available and well know reference materials – the founding documents – okay well know by Conservatives..

In the case of the Think Progress(Statist) piece, it was a request for proof an assertion You made on Republicans wanting mandates etc.

Do you really think that 'Think Statism' is a good source to prove that point?

How about a real news source?
  • snarkybird Are You For or Against Limited Government (Yes or No?)
Since you'll probably do your usual thing and wait until the last minute to respond, I'll add a couple of other thoughts as a pre-response.

In case you still haven't read that article on the 10th amendment, here is another except from that column:

“The Framers created a limited government, thus ensuring that individuals would have the opportunity to become all that their talents and persistence would allow. The left has put aside the original Constitution in favor of a "living document" that they believe allows them to do whatever they want and demand more tax dollars with which to do it. “

I can readily understand why you are ignoring this, you are either trying to fool yourself or fool the rest of use on whether you're an advocate Unlimited government for some reason.

You have already said you perfectly okay with the government having an Unlimited claim on everyone 's Time, property and labor, so it's not much of a stretch to believe that you go along with the idea of unlimited government.

As typical, your response to this question (after throwing out a few childish and petty insults) would be the regurgitation about the founding fathers and the three branches of government.

And again, that is answered by that column – which apparently your are refusing to even consider.

Would that shake up your world view too much?

wars end. SS was meant to remain. it's only in the hole because congress takes money out like it's an ATM and wont enact changes to change it with the times. the bar on wages was supposed to continue to rise much faster. it hasnt. the retirement age has needed to be changed for a long time. it hasn't. add in the boomers and it's a system running on decades old settings trying to manage an unexpected demand.

but, I think iraq was a good thing. but we never asked how we'd pay for it. same for afghanistan. albeit i think we need to change our strategy and bring most of the troops home, no one asked how we'd pay for that either.

but healthcare reform? god forbid we spend more than $100b a year to do that. when our DoD budget was 6 times that - for one year.

so when the CBO scores this plan from the GOP, tell me - do we trust it? ignore it? what?
  • reaceudders
I love it. fear of information (think statism). But you post an op-ed by cal thomas?

    c'mon man!

Let's see, according to Cal's op-ed "...The Court's jurisprudence makes clear that the federal government may not compel the states to enact or administer a federal regulatory program." "

really? well so much for the FAA. To name but one of many regulatory bodies that is enacted and administered at the state level as compelled by the federal govt.

but it can't be constitutional! they dont even mention airplanes in the constitution.

and please, when you reply with "that's the best you can do?", just skip ahead to the part where you offer some reasonable alternative that deals with implementation of your ideology, not just this tired notion of what you think is or isnt constitutional.
  • I'm not so sure...........................
Joyce M/B......hun......a small change may not be enuff.......and I think that those that were informed prior to the elections just got louder.......

the average amerikan voter is a dumbass, not stoopid just too busy with other things......work, family and lack of money fo' that plasma big screen......

pleeeeze don't give 'em more credit than they deserve which is real close to zilch......

okay folks it's almost time to fire up the big one........

    DRIP!!!

    don't return incumbent politicians!!!!!
  • as far as just monetary costs alone
    rejeff
ask yourself the same question about Iraq and afghanistan.

and then ask yourself if anyone asked how we'd pay for it.

at least that last one's being asked here.

    I'd answer yes to both.
    By snarkybird

That makes no sense either way. Wars are not generational costs. WWII and Social Security started approximately same time. I think we're through paying for WWII. We're in the hole with SS.

Iraq & Afghanistan, well the argument definitely could be made that it's becoming more and more a case of "why are we there?".
  • Snarkybird
I have an idea snarkybird. Why don't you hand over your paycheck each payday and cover it? You seem to be willing to do that anyhow. Start the movement!!! Set the example and be a big hero to all of us for your generosity!!
  • don't be so............................
sum of you are countin' dem chicken 'for there hatched......

    DON'T DO THAT!!!

    IT'S POLITICS!!!!!!
  • Re: J Cooper Remember: November 18 is National Ammo Day
Thanks none the less, I figured you may know about that but it was a good reminder to everyones to BLOAT!
  • Re: snarkybird have you actually read the article “What can the 10th amendment do for you? “
    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/nov/03/can-the-10th-amendment-save-us/
It clearly dispels the myth you keep on repeating that the Statist Democrats are going to let a little ol' thing like the “Constitution” stand in their way of Unlimited government.

    Try this on for size:
“Does the U.S. Constitution stand for anything in an era of government excess? Can that founding document, which is supposed to restrain the power and reach of a centralized federal government, slow down the juggernaut of czars, health insurance overhaul and anything else this administration and Congress wish to do that is not in the Constitution? “

Clearly dispels the myth you keep on foisting on all of us in response to any argument that the Statist Democrats will be retained by the constitution in their plans for Unlimited government.

As to you other posting – You really expect me to trust what 'Think Statism' says.
  • rejeff
ask yourself the same question about Iraq and afghanistan.

and then ask yourself if anyone asked how we'd pay for it.

at least that last one's being asked here.

    I'd answer yes to both.

is the dem healthcare bill really so important to you that you would risk bankrupting the country to get it?
  • @ACE
Yeah, I'm aware of Nov 18th, just lookin out for a brother,I thought you were in need! File it!
  • How do you propose we save it?
"I truly believe that 2010 may be the last chance we have to save our Republic from the likes of Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Rangel, Waxman, Hoyer and the rest of the statist crowd."

Vote Republican? Yeah, that will slow our death down some, unless, you're suggesting someone like Ron Paul.
  • Re: snarkybird "Ace's theory is that more moochers are voting their pocketbooks for the handouts of dems.”
    My theory?
    Do you remember this Quotation:

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury.
From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years.

Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.
    Alexander Tytler

    Or THIS quotation:

"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that justifies it."
    Frederic Bastiat

[You should, it's at the top of the page]
  • Ever notice
Has anybody ever noticed that every big city in America votes liberal and all the hick towns vote conservative? Makes you wonder when conservatives get their support from people in trailers and in towns w/o buildings.
  • The what-ever president
"Others have said this .. but Obama is completely in over his head. This is a job he was simply not prepared to handle. He became president not on the basis of accomplishment, but on the basis of charisma and a well-orchestrated campaign."

There was a lot of discussion about obama's qualifications and readiness during the election. At the time I thought he was not ready and would be a "rubber stamp" for Pelosi and Reed". I believe that to be true more than ever. I refer to him as the whatever president, meaning whatever they want is OK with me. Obama always talks in generalities, avoiding being pinned down on specifics. I believe this is the case because he does not have a clue.
  • Re: Bob & J Cooper They don't call Fauxbama “Gun salesman of the year” for nothing – whoops, soon they'll have to 'Gun salesman of the Century or something'...
You know what they say – you can always use More ammo – even if you can't shoot it all, it's good for barter.

Remember November 18 National Ammo Day, so get out there and do your part.
  • One more point
The exit polls showed that the youth vote was non-existent. No surprise. The euphoria ended. That is troubling for the Hussein admin. They got the uninformed and the dregs of society and other groups who don't typically vote out to the polls last time. It will be very difficult to get this group energized again. The "newness" and the freshness won't be there next time. There won't be that nonsense hysteria of "participating in a historic election". The idol worship is fading.
  • @Snarky
    >>>>NY - the conservative candidate lost. I do think this, as many here have said, should be troubling for moderate republicans. But, where's the win for the GOP in this take? It essentially tells candidates to move further to the right, and lose. Or don't ...and lose. This is kinda what I've been saying...it does create a problem for GOP incumbents.<<<<

    (1) You also made a comment about incumbents are in trouble. I agree with that, all polls show that people are hating both parties right now.

    (2) I disagree with your assessment on NY-23. Many on the left are trying to paint this as a divide between mode Repubes and conservatives. This is not troubling. The GOP ran a lib (not even a RINO) in this race. Despite her dropping out at the last second, Hoffman still nearly won! That is huge. Question for you: If GOP got behind Hoffman months ago, do you actually think that Hoffman would have lost yesterday? So, this is not "telling candidates to move to the right", it is rather telling the GOP establishment to pick the right candidates to support in the first place. If they would have done that, there is no question Hoffman wins.

    (3) Speaking of party divides, how come no mention of the divide in the Democrat party. You have so-called blue dogs vs. the radical left. The radical left is frothing like a rabid dog that BO hasn't delivered on the promises. If HC reform doesn't pass, they will go out of their mind. At the same time, you have blue dogs crapping their pants now, wondering what to do after seeing the election last night.

The more troubling divide is in the Dem Party. The Libs want results from Hussein, meanwhile the blue dogs are having trouble supporting the things the libs want!! I saw Carville on CNN last night say that if HC doesn't pass, the Dems will get "slaughtered". BTW, the "fair and balanced CNN" had 7 libs and 1 somewhat conservative (Carville's wife- Matlin) on their panel last night!

You have that moron from Daily Kos, Markos ItakeituptheAsses, whatever his name is, saying the reason for the election losses was because "The Democrats are moving too much to the center."!!!! He thinks Obozo is not lib enough!! That is what you're party is deaing with.
  • Obama
I agree with the "destroying America" theme. I have often voiced (selectively) that Obama and wife have always hated this country and were bent on destroying it...right along with their Weather Underground buddy and his re-education camps with executions for those who cannot be converted to his Socialistic ideas.
The following thesis is not really too improbable. Obama breaks the economy by taking on way too much debt. This causes the breaking of many American spirits and their desire to better themselves through capitalistic methods. The country is unable to pull out of its crushing obligations, unemployment, and crime. This leaves the only alternative. Nationalize the debt or die. Blame it on a new bogey man...Republicans?!? Look at what happened in Germany in the 1930's. Hmmm...Not too implausible, is it? I hope it is...but watch him and his misfits carefully.
  • You don't get it snark
"NY - the conservative candidate lost. I do think this, as many here have said, should be troubling for moderate republicans. But, where's the win for the GOP in this take? It essentially tells candidates to move further to the right, and lose. Or don't ...and lose. This is kinda what I've been saying...it does create a problem for GOP incumbents."

The NY candidate running as a Conservative only lost by what 5%? So he came very close to winning - WITHOUT GOP help! That's the amazing part! If Dede had been a decent Repub she would have thrown her support to Hoffman, not the Dem. And if the Repub Party had been paying attention they would have snatched up Hoffman from the beginning. That is the lesson for all Republican politicians, just saying you are conservative is not going to get you the election, you have to PROVE it. Hoffman did and he nearly pulled it off. That should also scare Democrats. If the party can get it's act together and back the conservative, the Dems are toast.
  • Oh Ben
I was trying so hard to be positive for just one day!!!! I know, long row to hoe....
  • Elections in America
"I truly believe that 2010 may be the last chance we have to save our Republic from the likes of Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Rangel, Waxman, Hoyer and the rest of the statist crowd."
That's a little alarmist don't you think? Being a Libertarian you should also realize that the Republican party is a statist party as well, they typically just grow the govt a little slower, not in such leaps and bounds and the Dems do. This union as it is now will continue to degenerate over the years because this election is no different than the ones before it. It's still the same philosophies, the same people and the same voters that probably haven't educated themselves because they've been too busy working and then vegging out in front of the TV after work.
I'm sure there are voters that have educated themself and continue to do so, but the greater majority in my opinion are probably the same old voter they were last year, and the year before, and the year before, gullible and lazy.
  • The Salvo from the White House
I'm just concerned that following yesterday's victory the White House will start putting the pressure on the FCC to take those "evil hateful" talk radio shows off the air.
Even though they forget that Reagan was elected without the benefit of talk radio, the left picks its dragons and goes in for the kill with a religious zeal.
  • @ ACE
Thats the only thing keeping NY afloat.
Kimber (Yonkers) and Fusion (Binghampton) Arms are backlogged until the start of the 2nd quarter of 2010 You want that pretty 1911 you need to order now!
  • @ACE
    Ace, you need ammo?
  • @ snarkybird
"Ace's theory is that more moochers are voting their pocketbooks for the handouts of dems. So, how did republicans running on fiscal issues win? It's crazy!"

The answer is simple; the moochers would have had to get off their lazy a$$e$ and go vote. The stakes weren't high enough this year so they ate their government cheese instead of voting.
  • It is too soon
This really is not the good news that it appears to be. The whole reason that Obama and the Democrats were able to get into office in the first place is because the Republican Party moved to the left. They controlled both houses of Congress and the White House and did nothing to limit the size of government and in fact greatly expanded it. There is not a viable 3rd party that can compete on the national scale so we need the Republicans to return to their conservative roots. The Republican party still has not learned their lesson, so until then we have to put up with all of this Democrat non-sense. When the Republican party starts running on real things like the "Fair Tax" and limited government as opposed to God, Abortion, Same-sex marriage, and flags; then, it will be time to put them back in power.
  • @ Joyce
    SOME
"People are waking up to the fact that our apathy in the past towards who is in office has resulted in an abused constitution, higher taxes and a level of political corruption unseen before."

I just hope it's enough, but I'm afraid not. There are just too many American Idol worshipers out there too lazy to actually pay attention to what really matters. And then there's the media who most of these dolts believe hook, line and sinker.

"We should end up with a better republic for it."

I so hope you're right, but it took them 233 years to get us from where we started to where we are.

Our only hope is to get the federal government out of out education system. And then it will take many, many generations.
  • One thing people need to consider, we've had an historic run on guns and ammo for the good part of the past year, why is that?
Did millions of people suddenly have an interest in duck hunting?

No, it was because they rightfully sensed that Fauxbama and the rest of the Statist Democrats would try to take away their right to defend themselves.

They've only make a couple of dumb statements about it so far – and wiping out the ammo supply in the process, arrrggh!

And Fauxbama has brought a bunch of gun grabbers into his administration, but nothing substantial, Yet.

But just wait for the appropriate “CRISIS”, and it will begin,

Remember, the Statists can't help themselves in that they are just like the criminals, they always want UNARMMED subjects instead of Armed Citizens.
  • dont trust voters
They were asked if this was about Obama, majority said no. His approval in states where GOP candidates won is still high.

What I see, based on the results from last night, is the public is still looking for change - period. Incumbents of both parties should be wary.

NJ - so glad to see corzine lose. he was a douche.

VA - so, was I the only one who has been so surprised that dems were winning there at all? I was stunned when Obama took VA last year.

NY - the conservative candidate lost. I do think this, as many here have said, should be troubling for moderate republicans. But, where's the win for the GOP in this take? It essentially tells candidates to move further to the right, and lose. Or don't ...and lose. This is kinda what I've been saying...it does create a problem for GOP incumbents.

Overall I think the right people won last night.

But, of course, that can't be right? Ace's theory is that more moochers are voting their pocketbooks for the handouts of dems. So, how did republicans running on fiscal issues win? It's crazy!

overall good night for the GOP though. if they play it right they could use this as momentum for 2010.

but it sucks for healthcare...really worried this will scare off some conservative dems from voting for it. And one thing is for sure - they may face opposition if they vote for it. But god help them if it doesn't pass. The base will skewer them.
  • @Joyce
    Well said, Joyce.

Based on the exit polls, the economy is obviously the issue. The GOP better get focused on that issue like a laser beam and not get distracted by other issues. The recipe for success appears to be running a conservative, focused on fiscal responsibility, and preferrably a newcomer and not a career politician as people are disgusted with Washington and both parties. The GOP needs to take a long look at NY-23. I don't don't know many more lessons they need, but they need to stop running these libs amd moderates. Back the conservative from the beginning, keep hammering on the fiscal issues, and 2010 will be good. Simple math - 20% of people identify themselves as Repubs, while 40% as conservatives.

How ironic for OBozo? You preached your change, and you were right, change is a coming!!!

BTW, did you hear the Rococalls that Obozo made in NJ? How pathetic! Same old rehash of "We voted for change a year ago, now we need to keep it going. We need better schools, and fairness for all blah blah blah..." It reminds me of when some one-hit wonder musical act comes back and tries to get the crowd back with their one hit that everyone is tired of. Even Obozo's voice in the robocall sounded as if he was going through the motions and was tired of the same old rehashed cliches.
  • How would the country be any different today had McCain been elected?
Well, for one thing, we wouldn't have thousands and thousands of American troops sitting in the dirt right now wondering why their Commander-In-Chief is ignoring them, as they fight a war THAT HE HIMSELF DECLARED TO BE NECESSARY. But....big deal, right? Who cares?
  • Obama's First Year
"I think the retrospective on Obama's first year should really be saved until the one-year mark from his coronation, not the election."

Why? Just being elected was worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Communism wins out
Snarkybird is right. Last night demonstrates just how stupid Americans are. We were on the verge of having a Soviet Communist state with Obama's election, then voters ruined it. I wish Snarkybird would run for President, because they would demonstrate how Karl Marx was so close to what we need in this country. Everyone should be forced to give over thier hard earned money and freedoms so that the government can distribute them as needed. SNARKYBIRD FOR PRESIDENT
  • How could he be so bad if he hasn't really accomplished anything?
"Obama has been far worse than I would have ever imagined".

I could see this statement being made by a liberal, but not a conservative.

Liberals are upset with President Obama because he hasn't really accomplished anything yet . . . Saturday Night Live even did a skit round this fact.

But this lack of action should actually make conservatives happy.

How would the country be any different today had McCain been elected?
  • I voted for Obama, you can thank me later!
    And I also got a "Rahm 2016" t-shirt!

I cannot imagine what Neal had to say after Bush's first year in office. I mean, at least NY Skyscrapers and the pentagon are doing well during Obama's first year.
  • Observations from Last Night
    (1) For the 7,678th time, the GOP screws itself again by supporting a lib on the ticket. In NY-23, they backed Dede Scuzzface. Despite all of that chaos, the conservative still almost wins! When will the establishment GOP get it through their thick heads, eliminate these RINOS (Scuzzface didn't even qualify as that). Run conservatives. If they would have run a Hoffman from the beginning, Hoffman would have won easily.

Who is to blame? Obviously, the NY Repubes party. How much involvement did the National Repubes have in picking Scuzzface? Steele should be taken to the woodshed on this , along with Newt.

Consider the logic: 20% of people consider themselves as Repubs, and over 40% as conservatives (larger than any other group). Yet, the moron GOP party still pushes the same crap.

    (2) After last night's Democrat debacle, where is the call by the media for the Democrat party to move more moderate and to the center? Why are there no reports on how the Democrats are becoming too extreme to the left and that they have to move more to the middle to win elections????????
  • Neal said; "I truly believe that 2010 may be the last chance we have to save our Republic from the likes of Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Rangel, Waxman, Hoyer and the rest of the statist crowd."
    Amen to that.

If we make it to 2010.
  • Map
Looking at that election map - you can go ahead and give 55 electoral votes back to the GOP in 2012.

There is no way on earth that the President will carry Florida, N. Carolina and Virginia again.
I'm on the fence for Indiana and its 11 electoral votes - but it will likely swing red as well.
  • One Year Anniversary Of Christ's 2nd Coming
Yeah, he's pretty much been a disaster, and by design, obviously. Y'all think his agenda is just ACCIDENTALLY detrimental to America? Anyways, if he'd just gone a little slower, made it so his face is not on the TV every 5 seconds, people might not have caught on; his marxist takeover might have gone a bit smoother. And the WORST part is, all he has to do is kiss ass in Ohio and Florida next time (when does the 2012 campaign start...next Wednesday, probably) and the world is stuck with this jerk from now till Jan of 2016. By then, though, it won't matter. We'll all be carrying our new currency via wheel barrow, to stand in line and pray there's still some toilet paper left on the shelves. Nice going, all you Hussein-voting dolts. PT Barnum was right.
  • ah but there HAS been change
And this is good change. I don't think it's the kind of change Obama and the progressives would have approved of or had in mind but...

Voters are educating themselves more on politics and what their representatives and senators actually do with their tax money.

Politicians claiming to be conservative, but actually are not at all conservative will be looking for new jobs.

Especially on local fronts more and more first timers are running for office! We might actually overthrow the old guard here in Augusta that has been strangling our development for decades.

People are waking up to the fact that our apathy in the past towards who is in office has resulted in an abused constitution, higher taxes and a level of political corruption unseen before.

We should end up with a better republic for it.
