Before the Democrats voted to invoke cloture on the healthcare bill this weekend, Senator Orrin Hatch tried his best to present some figures to his colleagues. Unfortunately, Democrats aren't going to be swayed by facts and figures or the truth .. they will only be swayed by power.

So here are the numbers that Orrin Hatch presented on the floor of the Senate:

  • 0 - the number of provisions prohibiting the rationing of health care.
  • 0 - the number of government-run entitlement programs that are financially sound over the long-term.
  • 10.2 percent - our national unemployment rate, the highest in 26 years.
  • 70 - total number of government programs authorized by the bill.
  • 1,697 - times the Secretary of Health and Human Services is given authority to determine or define provisions in this bill.
  • 2,074 - total pages in this bill.
  • 2010 - the year Americans start paying higher taxes to pay for this bill
  • 2014 - the year when this bill actually starts most of the major provisions of this bill
  • $6.8 million - cost to taxpayers per word
  • $8 billion - the total amount of new taxes on Americans who do not buy Washington-defined health care.
  • $465 billion - Cuts in Medicare at a time when it faces a $38 trillion unfunded liability to finance more government spending.
  • $494 billion - total amount of new taxes in this bill
  • $2.5 trillion - the real cost of the bill
  • $12 trillion - our total national debt

What others are saying

  • Republican Stalling
I am quoting another poster in saying "the republican alternative is a step by step program which is much more viable and sensible" I have looked high and low and found nothing except a hollow shell wih no specifics offered by the Republicans. All they have specifically offered is DELAYS, Lies and the Official party lines
  • Mr. Cornpone, JT
It was really a rhetorical question to show the stupidity of how many people died without health insurance.

The left makes an asinine statement that 18,000 people died because they didn't have health insurance.

You turned it around to show how many people died because they DID.

So I was just asking how many people were born because they didn't have health insurance to show how stupid the left's statement was.

Sorry, I really thought you'd get that, but thanks for the explanation...
  • Orrin Hatch
why didnt he mention the amount of debt that the Bush administration racked up with the wars and other pork laden military contracts like Halliburton?
  • Government borrowing and medical care
Medicare and Social Security would have an abundance of funds if the government hadn't continually 'borrowed' from those programs. I use the word borrow loosely because to borrow infers it was paid back which we know is not the case. I can see it now, there will be committee's and subcommitte's and subsubcommittee's. Little money will reach the intended recipients as with every other government run program. One day our grandchildren will scratch their heads in amazement at how stupid we were.

Don't get me wrong, we need something done to help people pay for medical expenses, myself included, but as long as lobbyists are out there buying votes for big businesses we little people don't stand a chance. Like with every other government program this proposed health care plan will only benefit the rich. Funny how this is allowed to keeping happening over and over. We all know that the senators and congressmen who have voted for this health care program already have companies established to do the providing. It will be Blackwater revisited. How can we ever trust any government program when time after time we're betrayed? There is a better answer to the health care fiasco but our Dr's would never give up their luxurious lifestyles. In countries with socialized medicine Dr's are not making the big bucks American Dr's are. That's why we have this influx of foreign Dr's, they come here and become rich. Also the drug companies are robbing us blind. I can cross the border into Canada and get the same exact medicine for 1/10 the cost. By the same manufacturer. How is that? Why not let Canada come over and show us what we're doing wrong.
  • healthcare
any fool thats for this 2trillion dollar united states killing terrorisom bill and they get it they deserve what you get nothing but a democratic win at all costs and dam the rest.
  • The Republicans real goal...
The Republicans are not offering meaningful solutions. The Republican goal is bury this bill in committee and endlessly debate the measure. They haven't proposed real solutions because they don't want to be associated with the bill in an effort to appease their power base. They know that the vocal minority support doing nothing so they are trying to appease them while offering lip service solutions to keep the moderates interested.

The Republicans have seriously erred in strategy because now a liberal only bill is going to be passed. The Republicans instead of being a partner in drafting the bill, have decided to be antagonists. But hey in 2016, Repubs will be able to say I told you so.
  • Commoner
You are copping out. No one ever said to do nothing, to say that is denying every discussion held on the subject, there are a lot of ideas out there, the republican alternative is a step by step program which is much more viable and sensible. But libs like you want all or nothing even if it ruins our economy. Don't you realize how many years it will be under the Dem plan before anyone benefits? And they still don't have all covered.

The Republican plan could take effect in most areas of concern IMMEDIATELY. Wouldn't that be more helpful? Or do you really care...
  • Most important number of all
only 38% agree with this crap
  • here's sum number fo' ya...............................
a hunnert gazillion tarillion billion.....I had to type it like that cuz I on'y have 1 "0" on my keyboard.....and I kno' a hunnert gazillion tarillion billion is a B I G number with lotsa 0's in it.....
  • Mr. Dover, Ben,
How many people were born because they didn't have healthcare? It's probably a safe assumption that no newborn's employer provided the newborn with health insurance and since most newborns lack income, it's probably also a safe assumption that the newborn didn't pay for health insurance. So the technical answer is NONE.

How many babies were born because their parents had - or didn't have - healthcare. None. I suspect that some may have been born because their parents lacked self-control. It's possible that some babies arrived because the parents erred. At least one baby showed up because the parents wanted one (mine)! I think my parents wanted me.
  • Commoner
Do you really trust politicians to do right by you?

If you watched "60 Minutes" last night, you understand that by supporting government-directed health care, you have given some pencil-pushing bureaucrat the right to decide when you die. The government manages Amtrak. The government manages the USPS. The government micromanages air travel. The government operates Medicare (trick question: which medical insurer rejected the most claims last year?). The federal government mandates Medicaid, which the various states have to fund. All of these "have unfunded liabilities" (an accountant friend says that's a euphemism for "are technically insolvent", which is a euphemism for "bankrupt"). Are you all that sure that the government will do right by you? I'm sorry, I prefer to watch over my own donkey (no, I am not now, nor have I ever been a Democrat - or a Republican, for that matter - I don't trust politicians)
  • get the hell outa there.........
let's go back to one year before medicare/medicade......and keep the gubmint outa there......then get together and come up with some constructive ideas that will provide access to dotors/nurse practioners hospitals and medicine.....

oh! one other thing!!! close the borders and deny tax payer $$$ to illegals.......

hahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!! I just luv my "new" meds......they make me happy.....
  • Health Care Bill
How about an Americans "Bill of Rights" Amendment attached to the bill? If we don't, the government will have unlimited power over our healthcare. It should include the right to all of the Democrat promises that they say are included...you know, no increase in the deficit, no coverage for illegals, no increase in taxes...you get the idea!
  • I was a fence straddler on healthcare but no more...
I e-mailed my Senators asking them to support it. The bill is not perfect but failure to fix health reform is much more dangerous to the future economy then fixing the issue. This bill addresses many of the issues. The Republicans have offered nothing meaningful to the discussion except to pander to the far right extremists and the few solutions that they have proposed (buy insurance across state lines comes to mind) are impossible to implement. While the bill will cost more than the dems promise at least they are providing meaningful solutions vs rhetoric.
  • This one is more accurate
0 - the number of times the Republicans got it right
  • JT Cornpone
How many people were BORN because they didn't have health insurance?
  • 18-
My estimate as to how many MONTHS (maybe even WEEKS) we have left in this country before we're literally standing in lines clutching our few dollars and hoping there's still a bag of rice and a few rolls of toilet paper once we get inside.
  • A couple more numberz
18,000 - The number of people who died because they didn't have health care (according to USA Today, 5/22/2002.

2,443,387 - The number of people who died in 2002 (according to the CDC)

If 18,000 of 2,443,387 died because they didn't have health care, did 2,425,387 die because they did have health care?

In the long run, we are all dead. - J. M. Keynes, 1923
  • Orrin's got the right idea ...
While Congress is busy investigating the BCS, they'll be distracted from screwing up the rest of the country.
  • Numbers
This proves that its not about "Access" and "Affordability", but "POWER!".

Simple research shows we have "access and affordability" across the US. But guess which state is the most restrictive?

  • Conservatives love big government
Yeah, trust Orrin Hatch. He is the one who wants government to look into the BCS. Sounds like a true conservative who wants to use his time in office wisely.

0-the number of times "hope and change" has brought about anything good in America during the last 10 months

  • This is where that regulatory czar comes in
"1,697 - times the Secretary of Health and Human Services is given authority to determine or define provisions in this bill."
