CHICAGO ... AND THE RADIO HALL OF FAME

This bit is hard to start ... because there are so many things to say and so many people to thank.  I'll keep it mercifully brief.

We all stayed at the Renaissance Hotel, the site of Saturday evening's ceremony ... right there on the Chicago River.  What an incredible view.  Spent much of Saturday walking up and down Michigan Avenue.  My favorite store was the Garmin store .. but then I'm a tech freak.   The lobby of the Tribune building is quite impressive.  There are quotations there from various people about the need for a free press.   Those words mean a lot right now after an election where the "free" press was clearly in the bag for one particular candidate.  Then there's the gift store in the Tribune building.  You guessed it ... Obama stuff everywhere.

Then there was the Hall of Fame dinner and ceremony Saturday night.  I was just too nervous to eat ... which was probably a good thing.  First up was Rush Limbaugh to deliver my induction speech.

Check out pictures of Boortz at the Hall of Fame here

Let me say something about Rush:  Several years ago Rush told me that if I was ever inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame he would like to deliver my induction speech.  When this year's inductees were announced I sent Rush an email asking if the offer was still open, but telling him I would certainly understand if there was a scheduling difficulty and he couldn't make it.  Well ... there was a scheduling difficulty.  This past weekend was Rush's annual golf outing with friends.  They spend about three days playing golf and a few evenings with dinner and cigars.  When  Rush got my message he told his golf buddies that they were going to have to eat dinner without him Saturday night ... that he was flying to Chicago to deliver my induction speech.  Turns out his pals listened to the show, and wanted to come too!  So after Saturday's golf Limbaugh, George Brett, Gary McCord, Vince Flynn and a few more fly to Chicago.  (I asked Flynn to have Mitch Rap off an Islamic terrorist in my name).  Rush told the crowd about the time I helped him earn a 45 minute suspension on Chicago's WLS.  At my urging, Rush told his national audience about the number of accidents caused by women farding in their cars.  After the induction, Rush and the golf posse headed back to Midway and flew right back down to West Palm for Sunday's round of golf.

A special shout out to Dennis Miller and Willard Scott.  Dennis had the crowd gasping for air during his remarks .. and who doesn't love Willard Scott.  Turns out that Willard listens to the show on WSVA and spends much of the Winter down in my Naples neck of the woods, so dinner plans are in the works.

Saving the most important for last .. .and that's you.  I know that I infuriate you sometimes, and more likely than not you've sent the show one of those "I'm never going to listen to you again" emails.  But when the voting for the HOF came along, you were there.  People who work with me know that I started dreaming of being in the Radio Hall of Fame about 17 years ago.    I'm still pinching myself.  I know I could never have made it without the support of my wife, Donna, and the dedication of people like Belinda Skelton, Royal Marshall and Cristina Gonzalez ... and listeners like you.

Special note:  Ivan Solomon from Solomon Brothers Jewelers has a special Radio Hall of Fame ring made for me.  We're going to take that ring and the Hall of Fame trophy and put it on display at Solomon Brothers for a week or so ... then I want it back.

Thanks to all of you.

What others are saying

  • Hall of Fame
    Congratulations--Well Deserved
  • Well deserved congratulations
I came to Atlanta about the same time you were on WRNG Radio. I have been, whenever possible a listener of you and your program since then. I have thick skin, thus when you say something I don't agree with it just doesn't affect me to any great extent. I, especially, enjoy when you get mindless liberals so tangled up that they don't know which end is up. You got my vote, I don't believe there's anyone who deserved the singular honor you attained near as much as you.
  • Well Deserved Rewards
Good on you Neal. It is great to hear that you have been recognized for not being afraid to call things as you see them.

Not many have the courage to do that and even fewer have what it takes to admit when they are wrong and apologize as I have heard you do from time to time. Even in these cases you have promoted discussion and critical thought in a world consumed by unquestioning groupthink.

Your service to the freedom of speech is a vital contribution and deserves all the honor this reward bestows.
  • HOF
Kudos, Neal. What a great career. Thanks for opening my eyes to many things.
  • Hall of Fame
    Congratulations, Neal!
  • Chicago Trip
I would have had to comment on Chicago's GREAT landmark, MEIGS FIELD.
  • Love Ya Long Time
Neal it was my pleasure to vote for you.
  • Congrats and a request
Congratulations Neal. As a former broadcaster myself, I know what an honor this is that you've received. I'm glad you got the recognition you richly deserve. And I'm glad you recognize the importance of your listeners in achieving that honor.

May I ask just one thing in return? Next time, could you please just treat those of us who are pro-life with a modicum of respect when not discussing the abortion issue? After all, we're part of your audience too.

Thanks so much. And again, a heartfelt congratulations!
  • I'm a Georgia Voter!
And I cast my vote this year for Neal Boortz! Best decision I ever made.
On a side note; to cast my vote for Neal, I had to vote for a lot of different radio personalities, some of which I had never heard of. However, there was ONE other radio personality that I actually HAD heard of, and thought 'Wouldn't it be neat if Neal won and THIS guy won too, then Neal would get to meet Dr. Demento!'
So, I made sure to cast my vote for him as well.
    Love you long time Neal!
    -Your faithful, flatbellied, blonde-bimbo, called-you-old-and-ticked-you-off, fan-of-forever-and-a-day
  • Congratulations
    Bravo Zulu Neal!
  • Hey!!
I was a liberal idiot too!!! Neal turned me ( I was right out of college though, I forgive me, liberalism was law). Thanks Neal, and I voted for you - AND I had problems because my connection kept on kicking me out, I spent good 1.5 hours trying to vote for you and finally did. So, YOU'RE WELCOME!
  • You so deserve this
    Hi Neal,

Pre-Obama I agreed with you about 85% of the time - during Obama I agree with you about 85% of the time but that 15% is hard. As insensitive as you might like to be percieved as being, some of us know the truth. FOX News and the Baby Jesus (Hannity) wish they were like you. Because after all the rhetoric I find you to be mostly fair. And your truth spin is easier to swallow. Now I'm gonna go downstairs to take a look at your trophy.
  • HALL OF FAME???????
    oh crap!!!

I thought I was voting for wall of shame........oh well ok....congrats....
  • Congratulations!
Couldn't be more deserved by any less grumpy thinker! Thanks so much for infuriating me 12 years ago, when I was an idiot liberal. Your reasoned arguments (plus my own hard work at deconstructing my liberal la-la-land worldview) have made a huge impact on my life...and that of my family and friends . You deserve this recognition which you and your fine crew have earned.
  • Limbaugh looks like Al Czervik
    Neal:
    Congrats... you deserved this.

I saw the pictures.. Did Limbaugh steal that jacket from Al Czervik, Rodney Dangerfield's character in the movie Caddyshack?
  • You've been deserving it for so long...
I've been listening to you, at least in the background (for the first part) for most of my life. I remember being a little girl and my mom would tune you in on Ring Radio. That was after my mom and dad got divorced and I think she listened to you to make my dad mad. He's probably more liberal than our current president. Anyway, something stuck - for me that is. I'm not able to listen to you at work because I can't get AM radio here. I used to stream you in until they blocked us from doing that at work.
I still listen whenever I'm not working and I am a loyal viewer of this site.

Way to go "Mighty Whitey"! ...and thanks to Royal and Belinda for helping you get there too. Are you still gonna stay on the air until Hillary gets elected?
I hope you love this enough to never retire.
    Love you long time...
  • I'm never going to listen to you again!
Well, not really, but I needed to join the list.

    Congratulations! A well-deserved honor.
  • Farding.....
Neal, I remember hearing Rush comment about the farding. His mistake was to have done it at the last possible moment on his show that Friday. I knew what he was saying because I'd been listening to you. (Never heard of "Farding" before that). I think Rush had to wait till the following Monday to clear up the insults to women. I think he swore you off for a while after that. But he did it to himself and apparently got over it as evidenced by his voluntary appearance at your award ceremony.

A BIG CONGRATULATION for the award. You deserve it for 30+ years of radio entertainment, common sense and being straight with us all by telling it like it is. I've been with you since actually before WRNG radio when you'd call Ludlow Porch and terrorize him.

    Thanks a million !!!!!

    Hank in Albuquerque
  • Thanks for posting the pics
Neal looks great but what was Rush thinking with that jacket!!!!!!
  • Class
Class act by Rush! You mentioned missing buying him dinner...why not do a round of golf?
  • Congrats!
Neal, congratulations on your induction! You're going to be hard to live with now!
  • Bravo-Foxtrot-Delta
So, this accolade demonstrates what, Neal?

    That you're smart? No...
    That you're a quality talk-show host? No...
    That you're entertaining? No...

While you may be all of those things, this "award" does not demonstrate that. All this award demonstrates is that you ran a successful election campaign... for a dubious distinction.

It's a shame that you can't get the same kind of results with the Fair Tax.
  • The trouble with thrills is that they're over with so quickly ...
    Back to work!
  • HOF
Can this be the last of the HOF pandering?
  • HOF
Is there anyway to post the video of Rush's induction speech? Would love to hear it
  • congratulations
ever since my Dad would argue with you on ring radio, I thought, that Neal's a real tool. Well, you've lasted, to Atlanta's great fortune. Congratulations
  • Article posted on Neal's induction

  • we get it, you're great
Wow, what an ego. Bringing it up again under the pretext of a "thank you". You deserve the spot, but man, you gotta get a handle on your insecurities. What's next, yet another round of telling us about your planes, homes, important friends, etc?
  • KUDO's Neal
Awesome - Looking forward to many more years of rational thoughts.
  • induction
your welcome. you earn it most days.
  • Many Congrats!
I could have told you weeks ago that Rush would be there. He's that kind of guy, a man of his word(s). Chicago is a great place to hang out at during this time of year, especially in the evenings.
  • Neal put up a link to Rush's speech for you.
    Neal:

Would it be possible to put up a link of Rush's speech commemorating you or would you send it out in the Boortz blast?
    Thanks,
  • Dr. Demento
It must have been great to be inducted along with Dr. Demento. I am glad that you had a great time.
  • Wow!
I would so love to see this, wonder if it will be available for public viewing.
  • Hall of Fame
Congratulations! You are most deserving of this honor.
  • Congratulations
    Neal,

Congrats on your induction. It is well-earned. You have been offering witty, intelligent musings on the current state of affairs longer than I've lived and breathed. There's an entire generation of young people in this country who have never known a time BN (before Neal).

    Congratulations, and keep it up!
  • HOF
You deserve to be in the Radio Hall of Fame, Neal!!!
  • Congratulations Neal
I still can't understand why you aren't broadcast up in New England. (I live in Tennessee but my brother in NH is a fan as well). You would really get some great phone calls from all of the hysterical liberals who reside up there.
  • Congratulations Neal
Congratulations. You definitely deserve it. Oh and by the way I'm never listening again! Just thought I'd be the first one to put that in!
  • Mazel Tov Neal!
And I am sure rush had plenty of pain pills for everyone in the audience.
  • Congrats
Mr Boortz, you keep doin' your thing, sir. The haters can go stick it where the sun don't shine. Congratulations to you. The Rude Awakening for life, baby!
  • Kudos!
Congratulations, Neal. It's been a long time coming.
  • I hope they got your title correct
That plaque in the Hall of Fame does say "The High Priest of the Church of the Painful Truth," doesn't it?
  • CONGRATS!!
WE love u Neal, congrats!! a long career and a well deserved timely reward for your work!!
  • hall of fame
I am so glad Rush was able to be there for you. I have never emailed "I won't listen" to you, others yes and have stuck with it. But I wouldn't to you, I don't always agree with you, but I do listen and respect your voice. Congrats again. Pictures please of the ring and trophy. Many listeners are online. Podcasts too of speeches.
  • WOW!!
And I thought I had a nice weekend just because the weather was nice. Congrats Neal and many many more years on the air (for god's sake...we need truth tellers, don't quit on us now).
