ATLANTA MAYOR'S RACE

It's come down to a runoff between Kasim Reed and Mary Norwood. Reed is black. Norwood is white. So ... we have a racially-charged runoff coming up. I'm guessing Reed will be the next Atlanta Mayor. Why? Because votes will be cast on racial lines, and there are more black than white voters in Atlanta. Mary Norwood has made some statements recently indicating how horrible she thinks Republicans are ... so I can't see Republicans making any real effort to vote in the runoff. In my view the big difference between the two is that Reed voted for the recent massive property tax increase and Norwood voted against it.

Let's also make this point. Blacks who vote for the black candidate on the basis of race are conscientious voters. Whites who vote for the white candidate on the basis of race are --- racists.

  • LOL! It is funny to me how white People will conveniently play the race card when African-Americans vote for an African-American candidate over a white candidate. I never hear any mention from white people of race being a factor when white people vote for a white candidate over an African-American candidate, even though this happens FAR more often in this society than the reverse. You are basically implying that African-American people are not smart enough to vote for what is in their best interest and only see the color of the skin, using that as the main criteria with which they make their final decision. African-americans will do what they usually do in any election and vote for the person who they believe it is in their best interest to vote for. In the history of this country, African-Americans have NEVER had a problem voting for a white person for public office. The proof
of this is that there have been 43 presidential elections where African-Americans voted for white candidates. In all of those elections white presidents were put into office with the help of African-American voters. How many African-American governors have been elected in the state of Georgia by the white majority? I know the answer . . . do you? If not, look
it up. I have relatives in states like Mississippi, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky. How many African-American governors have been elected in those states by the white majority? I know the answer . . .do you? If not, look it up. But let an African-American majority elect an African-American over a white and all of a sudden race is a factor. White people PLEASE!!! LOL!!! Get a grip on reality and stop playing the RACE CARD! This country has 400 years of example I can give where whites have routinely and systematically NOT voted for an African-American just because they were African-American. Again, stop playing the RACE
    CARD!
  • Good post Neal
Except for the fact that Reed didn't for for a property tax increase. But let's not let the facts get in the way of your Demagoguery.
  • white lady????????
do any of you racist sumbitches think some ol' white lady gunna be da mayor....hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

maybe her great great granpappy owned one of the atlanta voters g.g.granmammy......uh oh maybe sumpin goin' on in dat ol' wood pile......
  • Race and Politics
"Blacks who vote for the black candidate on the basis of race are conscientious voters. Whites who vote for the white candidate on the basis of race are --- racists." Thank you for saying what we have all been thinking but were afraid to say out loud because we'd be call racists.
  • Mayor race
If an out of stater who lived in Georgia 20 years until 2007 can give their 2 cents worth I'd like to...

Sadly I have to agree with Neal that Reed will likely win. I'd even expect ACORN to butt in and "dig up" some dead voters to help make it a slam dunk win for Reed.
  • Gender Factor
Yes, Atlanta votes on racial lines (black mostly) but there is another important factor that plays in favor of Norwood, she is a female. Gender is a political issue. Never leave that out. Look at it this way, if a white male was the very best candidate for mayor in Atlanta he would not get even 5% of the vote because of his skin color and what he is packing in his crotch area. He would just be wasting his time. It is stupid but true. Being on the correct side of solid issues doesn't get one elected in Atlanta. Skin and gender does.
  • easy there Retired
    (laughing)
Stan's #1 is pure satire, sarcasm, parody - whatever you want to call it.

    But, having said that,

THIS IS WHAT LIBERALS ACTUALLY BELIEVE

Thanks for your service in Fire and Rescue.

BN - toss him a beer...a cold one dammit!
  • No more McLin
Yes, it's true about EX Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin's glasses...and let's not forget the hats!! What a waste of 2 terms.

Congrats to Dayton's Mayor Elect Gary Leitzell...an INDEPENDENT!!!
  • Just think of all the riots in Atlanta
    if Norwood wins.
  • ATL Mayor
I would never vote for anyone with any kind of name like Kasim, Barak, Hussein, Masood, Abdullah, Darius, etc.

I will always vote for the most American sounding name and hope that will give me the best results.

I think that will at least help a little in reducing the chances of special interests and attention going to places where it does not belong.

    The black person will win.
  • It's all over
When it gets down to the nitty-gritty, Blacks will vote to keep Atlanta a "chocolate city".
  • Black Voters
Obama won with ticked off Reps and their misguided protest votes AND black voters who have never seen the inside of a voting booth voting for a black face - they will never support a white candidate with the same fervor. Obama is a one shot candidate, the lamest of ducks after 2010, and this juvenile experiment will be over.
  • a qualified candidate
Whatever happened to Atlanta's son, Clark Howard? Wasn't he going to run? I have a feeling everybody'd vote for him.
  • @Carlos
I doubt many blacks even know who Jesse Helms is because most Americans don't even know the number of states in the country! Pop culture drives most Ameican thinking.
  • More transparency from the Democrats, They are transparently Racists.
And they really need to understand that psychological phenomena of 'Projection'.
  • One person can fix Atlanta's woes
Where's General Sherman at, now that Atlanta needs him the most???
  • Stan's #1 Fan
"I agree with Stan. In a nation that's historically been run by dead white racist slaveowners, is it really such a problem..." You should have ended your rant with the listed quote. You are the problem. Stan's #1 fan YOU and others who are so consumed with this type of B.S. are the very ones who hold blacks back by perpetuating ignorance. This attempt at thought process trickles down to voters who buy into your crap and the result is not who is best qualified to be elected but who is the right color. Grow up!
  • A Few Observations
First off, DB, incorrect. Blacks vote Democrat first. Race when it comes to Democrats to blacks is incidental. In 2004, blacks supported Kerry 88%-11%. That same year, Obama won his senate seat, he got 92% of the black vote even though his Republican counterpart, Alan Keyes was also black. If you put a black Republican up against a white Democrat I guarantee you that the white Democrat would get a vast majority of the black vote. Again, this is a statement of fact. Unless you have some data to prove me wrong.
  • Jesse Helms
A black co-worker told me a few years ago why he thinks blacks vote overwhelmingly for Democrats.
He said that probably more than any other politician, Jesse Helms is responsible for the Republican revolution in the South and the wholesale abandonment of the Republican party by blacks. Jesse Helms was a unabashed racist who appealed to the baser instincts of redneck Southern voters who, prior to Helms, were dixiecrats and voted overwhelmingly democrat.
Blacks look at everything the Republicans do through the prism of Jesse Helms.
Only a black Republican president will ever change their minds. Anything else, and that includes a black Republican vice president, will merely be an Uncle Tom.
  • Atlanta; Mayor's race
What does race or gender have to do with the incompetence of the people managing the Atlanta Watershed. In my oipinion any government that cannot deliver a basic government service (as water is) with any degree of efficiency should be overthrown.
  • What Do You Mean, "Runoff"??
Are you implying that a black man is going to win because he's genetically superior and can defeat this little white woman in a foot race?
Is THAT what you mean? What's wrong with you people?
Wait a damn minute...WHAT DO I MEAN BY "YOU PEOPLE"?
  • Race
    Rockhound

I disagree. Blacks vote for blacks first.
  • Mary Norwood
She will win, Reed is another jeebus freak
  • No doubt
Death, taxes, and African Americans refusing to vote for white candidates. Those are the three absolute locks in life.

Doubtless the people voting for Kasim Reed will be the same people who demanded that Michael Vick not go to jail for comitting multiple federal crimes.

Welfare Nation - RISE UP! The ballot box needs you.
  • Mayoral ...RACE (dichotomy)
Anyone would have thought by now we could put away our petty differences. Whether the mayor that is elected happens to be WHITE or BLACK is of NO RELEVANCE. The city's fiduciary and economic responsibilitiies do not know of RACE or of PARTY; they are only affected by what actions the elected mayor will take.
In brevity, it doesn't matter what color the mayor is if the city is ran into financial ruins does it? The city is STILL in FINANCIAL RUIN. The same for its success, whether the mayor is white or black, if the city blossoms, then it is the citizens of ATLANTA who benefit....WHITE AND BLACK.
  • Kasim Reed
I agree with Stan. In a nation that's historically been run by dead white racist slaveowners, is it really such a problem for to have those of Africamerica running something as small as a city? Most of you don't even live in Atlanta, so why do you even care? In Reed we have a cerebral, thoughtful, articulate individual who understands what it's like for most of his residents to live under oppressive white rule. In the other candidate what do you have? A woman (remember stupid Palin is a woman) whose name is the same as the chart used to measure the level of baldness someone has.

That's your choice. A thoughtful, contemporary, cosmopolitan, intelligent man with dark skin, or a woman named after the baldness chart with the same white skin you see on every other politician.

Now go vote for Mary and think it's not racist!
  • I Asked This Last Year
I asked this question last year and I never got a straight answer. What is worse, voting for someone based on the color of their skin or not voting for someone based on the color of their skin? However, I don't believe blacks vote strictly along racial lines. Race only counts if it's a white Republican or a black Democrat. I don't believe blacks would hold skin color all that high if a Republican candidate was black. Blacks vote almost unanimously Democrat first. If a candidate is black, that is merely a bonus. This is a statement of fact.
  • Mary Norwood
Her last ad was her mistake. To win she need to tie Kasim Reed to Shirley Franklin.
  • Quote
To quote the Talkmaster: " Elections have consequences". Unfortunately, some are blind to that fact.
