9/11 MEMORIAL TOO CONTROVERSIAL?

A Connecticut man wants the words "Killed by Muslim terrorists on November September 11, 2001" on a plaque memorializing his son. The town of Kent says "no way." What is the problem with the truth here? Holocaust memorials make references to Germans. Memorials at Pearl Harbor make reference to the Japanese. The town just wants the memorial to say that his son "passed away." Muslim terrorists did this .. say it like it is.

What others are saying

  • A Lie, a PC Lie, is still a Lie
"she does not want to alienate any members of her small [town]"

So alienating the father and other townsfolk is okay because?

The truth is that she, being a bigot, has divided all people into the politically preferred (like Muslims) and the politically inferior (like heterosexual white Christian males). And she doesn't want to alienate the former.
  • Disagree with Boortz :-(
Japanese and Germans are nationalities; Muslims are a people of a religious group.
I don't understand the point in pointing out the religion of a group of nuts. Hey, how about we put out signs stating the religon of all murders. One of my cousins died in Jamestown over twenty years ago. Should I post his name up on a sign that reads "Killed by a Christian Fanatic"?
  • The Muslims might run this country>>>
The Muslims might run this country one day, because our leaders wont say this is a religious war but a civil war. Whenever we leave things will go back to the same as the did we got there. The Muslim's wont rule the world. One day the anti christ will and the anti christ will duke them as well as 2/3's of the Jews. It is in the bible and it will happen that way, wither you agree with the bible or not.
  • town of Kent
the rememberance of your murdered son will live in the heart of every true American. Kent doesn't warrant the right to claim you as its own if it fears the truth
  • 9/11 Memorial
The WWII Memorial in D. C. has no mention of the Japanese attack on Pearl. Political correctness (oh, we can't offend them!)
  • rejoyce
    exactly. you're missing the point.

please go back and look at casualty rates for all our wars.

you think terrorism is bad? try vietnam. or WWII.

things have changed dear. 9/11 was bad. but it wasn't equal to one day in WWII.

fear is their greatest weapon. that's why they dont need all the equipment.

and if we start treating them like a real power, they've already won half the battle.
  • terrorists snark
They have never depended on heavy equipment/artillery. A suitcase is good enough to deliver a bomb, remember? They have exactly what they need to inflict damage. Or did you miss 9/11? If you can use someone else's equipment...

And of course we all know, the fewer people involved in an operation the more likely it will succeed if it depends on secrecy. And their society have for hundreds of years been able to replace aging warriors with young ones.

But like I said, let's just pull everyone back and see what happens. Secure our borders. You forgot that part.
  • Snarky is right!!
Snarkybird is right again!! We should all just shut up, sit back, and let China take over. This country sucks anyhow, so it's time we hand over our hegemony to another leader. I hate the freedoms this country provides and snarkybird is the voice that we all should listen to. The praises of terrorists by snarkybird is wonderful, because it shows that someone gets why they do what it is that they do. Great job snarkybird!!!
  • PC
When the truth isn't politically correct,it must be struck down or masked.
    Leave the guy alone.
  • It should be obvious...
by now that Al CIAda is controlled by our government. It has now come out that Al Qaeda and the Taliban is CIA funded and backed. For at least 2 years prior to and leading up until the day of 9/11 both groups have been on CIA payroll. We are just now finding out that Karzai's brother who is an opium kingpin in Afghanistan has been helping the CIA smuggle drugs into the US. I have been telling you all about this for some time. Tin foil hats do not apply here. Our CIA is guilty of drug trafficing. Don't take my word for it though. You should be able to find dozens of news sources saying the same thing.
  • "Killed by muslims on September 11, 2001"
If "muslims" is too offensive, how about

"pedophile-worshiping female-abusing filthy psychopathic piles of fecal matter"

(the word "terrorists" actually not needed at all - it's redundant).

BTW liberals, this is what unchecked bigoted hateful prejudice towards a certain group really looks like.

    BOO!

Yeah, I know - I'm as bad as they are, right? I'll ring that bell just as soon as I fly my first airliner into a GO**AM OFFICE BUILDING!
  • rejoyce
uh, joyce..I'm pretty sure even with all the money they have, they don't have a single submarine, air craft carrier, F22, B2, or several hundred thousand armed and highly trained soldiers.

terrorism shouldn't be looked at like some post soviet threat. it should be looked at as the fringe of societies left out or who have shunned for cultural reasons the march of globalization.

that is why I look at them as "hillfolk". they're relics in search of a hole to hide their heads in while the world marches on.

and they will do whatever it takes to keep that world from gaining a foothold at their doorstep.

frankly, time will fix most of this. the twenty something bulge in the mid-east ready to die for their beliefs will become the middle aged bulge in search of a job to feed their family.

we need to be there to greet both of them. one with a fist and the other with an open hand. and we need to do both now where we can and let private markets do the rest.
  • Wow snarky
That was weird even for you to just refer to Al Qaeda as hillfolk. Better do a little search on Bin Ladin, the man is worth several hundred million dollars. Those "hillfolk" have access to high technology and use it to their advantage. Don't dismiss them.

At the same time, if we are not going to get serious about taking out Al Qaeda, which it appears we are not, then we need to bring everyone home, secure our borders. THEN if we are attacked again, all bets are off.
  • Using "terrorist"
I agree with Snarkybird. America is racist and should never even use the word "muslim". If America cared enough about being sensitive to our fragile emotions, we would change to a dictatorship and tax everyone into paying for each other's livelyhood. Everyone should have equal stuff and live in a godless world. Eventually, as Karl Marx wrote, we wouldn't need government any longer. Great post Snarkybird!!! I love your views.
  • not exactly
People are "killed" in car crashes. Soldiers are "killed" in action. Civilians are "murdered". It needs to say "MURDERED by Muslim rag head terrorists.."
  • Here, “Passed away,” is a misleading pc absurdity.
He died in a deliberate act of mass murder. Surely there an accurate middle ground, I’d settle for, “Murdered,” or “Killed,” by, “Terrorists.”

The Taliban and aq are just hillbillies that want to be left alone, that’s why they had to go so far to kill Americans.

Gee Lane, I thought that was Charlie Wilson's war?
  • PC
it may not happen in our lifetime or even our childrens...but one day the world will be ruled by the muslims. All of you PC types out there that don't want to offend or stand up to the moslems should take great pleasure in knowing your future generations will be living under this tyrannical religion.
  • Has to be more specific
I am sure if it said "Taliban" or "people Reagan gave arms to" it would pass through the government quicker.
  • Stop laughing at me!
    @Stan's Fan

It's not very nice that you make our kind look as stupid as we are. We don't have the luxury of independent thinking. We can only say what Hollywood has told us to say.
  • Mermorial
Yep...just like the Crusades were blamed on the Christians...too bad people cant remember history.
I say the town needs to keep their Government out of his personal business.
Our problems today are the result of too much Government....we all know the opposite of Progress.
  • Man...
When people in this country realize just how much we have been lied to about 9/11 and this whole financial crisis the SH*T is going to hit the fan. I cannot believe there are still people that believe the "official story". They have had to change and backtrack on the official story already something like 5 times because the real science and facts do not line up with what they claimed happened that day. I think what is killing the nay sayers and skeptics at this point is that they are starting to see some bits and pieces of the truth starting to come out and it is shakin their faith in government and it is driving them crazy. Soon they will be forced to admit that the kooky crazy conspiracy theorists have been right about all this. Heck Hannity has had to admit it twice so far this year.
  • restansnumonefan
    Victor?

    Seriously? By what measure?

Dude, terrorism isn't the next big thing. It's just what's left.

America won this fight a long time ago. the hill people you call the "victors" (al qaeda and their ilk) are just that - arab hillbillies who dont want nuthin ta do with this whole "freedom" thing. they just wanna be left alone. like any other backwoods cult like group who cant stand the light of day.

The world is moving on and their only hope is grasping at straws like terrorism.

They will come and go like every other protest group.

it's called being marginalized. and in this case time, freedom, and the universal desire for people to be free to live will wipe this turd off its shoe just like every other piece of s**t that has been too blind, dumb, or arrogant to move out of it's way.

but keep rooting for the ignorant sh**theads and see where that gets you.
  • follow Pentagon's lead
    @By snarkybird @ 11/02/09 08:39:14 AM
Excellent point about OK City bombing but it's a bit much to say the guy is making himself look dumb. Unfortunately, we didn't have the type of leadership in this country that would have encouraged the Pentagon to mention Muslim terrorists so this little town is also going to play it safe.

    @By Stan's #1 Fan @ 11/02/09 08:40:43 AM
I realize you think you are cleverly taking "Stan's viewpoint" to some conclusion that points out his flaws but a) you aren't as clever as you think so stop calling your friends and telling them to check out your lastest Newz gem and b) you look pretty desperate for attention when you "agree with Stan" when he hasn't even posted anything.

This moron is one yours, GOP.
  • Sick and tired
I am so sick and tired of having to tip toe around a new politically protected group. Why the hell is it OUR problem that Muslims have a sect of fanatics bent on KILLING people?
  • the man should go ahead....
and out 'killed by muslim terrorists' as a memorial. It is indeed the truth. Just as if someone made a 9/11 memorial that said 'the fundamentalist muslim reaction to intrusive American military adventurism'. Just the cold hard truth.
  • Public vs Private land
While (IMHO) the town is wrong not to include the message if that's what the father wants, they are in the right to say what can and can't go on that plaque, because the plaque's going on city owned "public" property.

The best solution would be to allow the citizens of Kent to choose - there IS an election tomorrow, after all! There are less than 3,000 people in the town, so take 6 reams of paper and run off a quick addition to the ballot, and let the public decide what goes on public property.

Otherwise, if the father really wants that message, and the town doesn't, the father should have it added to his son's tombstone in a private cemetery.
  • What's the problem?
The father has every right to put up a plaque saying whatever he wants on his own property or anyone else's property that will agree. If the town is paying for the plaque and posting it on public property, they call the shots. I think it's a namby-pamby stance, but it's their plaque and their wall.
  • "We perceive ourselves as a very warm, loving town," said Ruth Epstein, a Kent selectman and one of two town leaders to vote the plaque down. "To disparage any one ethnic group is just against everything that we stand for here."
So is having the balls to name our enemies, apparently.
  • 9/11 MEMORIAL TOO CONTROVERSIAL?
Wasn't that man killed by a "man-made disaster"?
  • Wrong Date
"Killed by Muslim terrorists on November 11, 2001"

Maybe they city fathers know that 9/11 happened in September, not on Veteran's Day.
  • "To the victor go the spoils"
I agree with Stan. In Neal's prior examples of the Japanese and Germans, those nations were defeated while the United States was on the side of the victors. When it comes to the so-called "war on terrorism", the United States has finally gotten the b***ch slap it so richly deserves. To be blunt, YOU LOST. It may have taken a slew of otherwise unrelated hands from al-Qaeda to Hollywood to Obama to secure your defeat, but you've been defeated. Big time. Just be thankful that our side has only wanted small spoils of victory like denying your racist slam against Muslims to be printed onto a memorial. Al-Qaeda doesn't want territory or political influence in the USA. They just wanted to give you guys a big honking black embarrassing eye and that's what you've got. You've lost! American superiority is dead.
  • Memorial
Let me ask who is paying the cost of the memorial? If it is the father then he should be allowed whatever words he wants.

If it is the town, then they have the perpogative to erect whatever memorial they deem appropiate.

Of course the father then has the perogative to sue to prevent the memorial from going up or suing to get a memorial he objects to taken down.
  • so?
what's wrong with just removing the word "Muslim"? I mean, if he wants to be accurate he'd probably want to say "Wahhabi Terrorists". But, even then - who cares?

Your examples of german and japanese make no sense. it was the Nazis of germany and they were a political party with a specific agenda to exerminate the jews and take over the world. japan was aligned with that same cause.

the religion of islam includes many millions of people who have no association with terrorism at all. It would be like calling the Oklahoma city bombing the act of christian terrorists. or libertarian terrorists.

again, if he wants to honor his son, why isn't "terrorist" enough?

    he's making himself look dumb.
