ZERO TOLERANCE STRIKES AGAIN

From this story:

An 11-year-old Des Moines girl was at home on suspension Tuesday for bringing a handful of empty shotgun shells to school last week.

Jazmine Martin, a sixth-grader at Brody Middle School, picked up the shells as souvenirs during a family trip to a ranch in South Dakota, where the rounds were fired as part of a show. They were blanks.

Remember ... Zero Tolerance policies are brought to you by government officials who want to escape the hard work of logical thought. Behind every zero tolerance policy you will find a collection of bureaucrats celebrating the fact that they won't actually have to use any common sense to noodle out a problem when the need arises. Zero tolerance policies are the essence of bureaucratic thought, and hence government.

  • Did what I could
Well folks I did what I could on this issue put pen to paper and sent a letter off to my Representative Mr. Steve King from District 5 in Iowa, I also sent one out to Senator Chuck Grassley. One letter to each is not going to be enough however. I would encourage you all to get take 15 min and just tell your Congressmen how you feel about the issue(s), and if they don’t listen then take 15 min in 2010 and make sure they truly know how you feel about the issue(s).
Elections have consequences, make your voice heard, and then vote your values. For the record I did a write in for Ron Paul last cycle – now I am probably on an extremist watch list somewhere, for all you that think I wasted my vote, guess what too bad it was mine to waste and I exercised it, besides we do not have a “None of the Above” option in Iowa.
  • Plastic scrap?
She brought an piece of scrap plastic to school and got suspended. Nice. Next time, pack your lunch in a plastic bag. Then let it be known that the bag once held a box of live shells. Do you get suspended for bringing the empty bag? Cripes.
  • Good one Amy!
Zero tolerance - that means a student most certainly would be suspended if he/she brought in a (gasp) gun magazine with pictures of (gasp) guns!

But it would probably be ok if he/she brought in a sex magazine , you know, for (educational instruction.)

  • Re: Zero tolerance
    ... and gun-free zones.

Contrast and compare: The number of shootings at schools and the number of shootings at gun shows.

Of course, the whole point will be lost on the likes of Brian Fantana.
  • Hmmm...
OMG... massachusetts quarter has a minute man holding a gun!!! is that banned from school also?
oops... that gun was approved by government, so it's okay

    zero tolerance = 100% moronic

Brian: I'm sure you lived a very sheltered life, you should get out more… the sun is a really cool thing to look at.
  • About Zero Tolerance
All you liberal fools look at it in simple terms:
The kids who massacred Columbine only brought the guns to school THE DAY THEY USED THEM. Whether they did before or not is irrelevant.

If a kid comes to school intending to shoot, what do you think he is going to do if a teacher/guard sees the gun? That kid will shoot them and zero tolerance will become moot.

Zero tolerance and all the other crazy gun laws are jokes and I cannot see how you think the people causing the problems will ever be stopped by them.
  • I can dream, can't I?
It's a shame we can't have zero tolerance policies for government workers. Terrorize a child who brings empty shotgun shells (more commonly known as garbage, unless you're a reloader) to school and immediately lose your job.

  • Columbine
There are going to be plenty more Columbine type incidents.

Kids have always needed supervision and rules but it is getting worse every day as a society.

A big problem is all the senseless rap music that glorifies and promotes violence and sex.

You are a bigger hero and better role model the more violent you are and the more illegitimate offspring you produce.
When you get killed you are a martyr.
  • Brian's song
In the spirit of Darwin's survival of the fittest when society falls apart the weak ones like Brian will be culled through quickly. I always attempt to look for the silver lining.
  • @ Brian Fantana
While I do understand your mentality (I used to feel the same way) the numbers do not lie. I realize that you will probably either not read this or simply choose not to believe it, but it's worth a shot (no pun intended).

  • Zero Tolerance
Equates to voting present...it removes the need for making any decisions.

Greg P. ...don't give fantana any mental health advice...people like that need to be removed from the gene pool.
  • Guns
This is utterly ridiculous. The mere presence of something associated with firearms caused the girl to be suspended is a total bunch of, as Neal puts it, horsesqueeze. I learn more and more everyday how far gone schools are, and how they are a part of the government indocrination program (Ivan I'm with you on this one). And as for the fears of another Columbine, you'll never win that argument with me, mainly because you were never there, and you never knew the students personally. I roamed the halls of Columbine from '93-'97, and knew of the now infamous Trenchcoat Mafia from its insception. I also have a strong beliefe that most people who are affraid of firearms are not simply not familiar with them, and only see them as a tool of crime. I see them as a tool that in the wrong hands can be used for evil purposes, and in the right hands can be used to stem evil purposes. I am a US Navy veteran, have a license to carry a concealed handgun, and accept the responsibility of my safety. If children are taught lessons like this, that merely handling something used in a firearm, or in some cases drawing a firearm are evil, are we not teaching them to cower at the sight of firearms? What do they do when someone of authority abuses that authority? Don't tell me it doesn't happen, I have a collection of article of officers who use guns in crime to help with the simple minded liberals at my work. So I ask you liberals, who do you trust with firearm, the police, the government, and only them? Because you can't trust yourself to take responsibility don't expect me to adopt the same policy, you chose not to own a firearm, I chose to own over 30, mainly those evil black rifles you love to hate.
  • @ Jimmy Dolan aka Brian Fontana
In your first post below you ask, whats wrong with that? The first thing wrong is your thinking is very delusional and mixed up. More guns = less gun crime as evident by the problems in Chicago and N.Y., making guns taboo in school, and less gun safety classes increases the chances of accidental gun discharges, and for the intellectual part, the children today being brought up in this enviroment of zero policy seem to be less intellectual. I guess you have a real insecurity complex when it comes to guns, therefore you should never own one. Just because you suffer from this doesn't make it morally right for you to expect others to give up their rights to make you feel better. Next time you go to your doctor, see if he can refer you to somebody concerning your suicidal thoughts as evidenced by your second statement in this post.
  • Zero Tolerance
    Zero Tolerance
We don't want another Columbine, so we?

That was so tragic and would have not happened if zero tolerance was in force to prevent it.

    Huh?

Zero Tolerance only stops the honest people.

Even if zero tolerance was fully in effect, it would not have stopped Columbine.

Pull your head out of the sand and think about it.

I would use the Matrix scene where Neo and Trinity enter the building loaded for bear. No zero tolerance policy would be effective in that case, which is within reason, the same scenario in which Columbine took place.

Even Wikipedia, the bastion of true-speak, has details that show a zero tolerance policy will never stop a calculated and premeditated attack.

    Get real.

    By ZeeRoh

But Zee, do you really think zero tolerance would have stopped those two boys at the door? No, it wouldn't have.
  • I guess the inert .50 cal ball, and 20mm HE shells I used to bring to school would be frowned apon
I wish I had a dollar for every time I went to class with live ammo in my coat pockets.

These kind of mindless and absurd guidelines are a big part of socialized medicine.
  • In addition,
It's lilberal jackasses like you, Brian, that thinks it's someone elses resposibility for YOUR safety.
Outlaw all guns and the only ones with guns will be criminals.
    You are truly an idiot.
  • ....you can't fix stupid (Brian)
I don't know where you got your education, Mr. Fantana, but it is obvious you are brainwashed liberal lemming.
Firearms education promotes safety of same. That education includes in class lessons and hands on lessons. There are millions of law abiding, responsible, and well trained AMERICAN gun owners in this country, and guess what, none of them killed anyone yesterday. It's the ignorant and illegal posessors of firearms that have only one thing in mind. To use it for no good. It's those that are the problem.
I'll make you a deal. You leave me to my guns and ammo and I promise not to use them when your house or family needs to be protected from the criminal element including the government.
    Deal?
  • Shotgun shells
To deal with the silly adults running the school system.
Next week have every child who attends the school bring in an empty shotgun shell. Show the shells to the silly principal. It's time for these idiots running (ruining) our schools to feel uncomfortable.

  • @BFer
too bad your daddy (if you actually know him) didn't keep firearms in the house...I am sure, given your intellectual abilities, you would be nothing more than a statistic and then we wouldn't have to read the pure crap you write.
  • OR theron
If a kid lives in a house where the parents know how to get to the gorcery store, arent criminals, or arent afraid someone is going to attack them 24/7, then there wont be a gun in the house for your child to blow his brains up.

  • Another case for homeschooling.
This is another case for homeschooling. This way parents can truly control the learning environment and not have to put their children through the ultimate child abuse, "government education".
  • @Brian, oh please
Three adults live in my house. Me, my wife of 20 years, and my mother-in-law. Between us we hold multiple advanced degrees, including a PhD in pediatric nursing and a masters in computer science; also a top secret security clearance (with associated FBI background investigation and intensive polygraph). There's also 3 handguns, several rifles, and a pump-action shotgun. My wife & mother-in-law had been life-long Democrats, until the last few years and now support mostly Libertarian party (which I have for many years, with my last Republican vote being for Reagan).

In other words, plenty of people who own firearms and well-educated. Plenty of people who own firearms are not knuckle-dragging right-wing extremists.

P.S. It's "fewer" shootings, not less. And we've never had a single accidental discharge.

  • Brian Fantana and that entire liberal mindset IS COMPLETELY WRONG when it comes to firearms
If you never teach a kid to understand what guns are meant for and capable of, then THAT kid will likely kill himself or someone he knows playing with the damn thing.
I have taken my five year old to the range many times and taught him how to operate a .22 and he has watched me handle the bigger weapons.
The point is that he now knows what the gun can do and I am confident he will never take it from my safe (as if he could even get in) and hurt himself.
    --
The bottom line: the curiosity and mystery for guns by kids will be eliminated if they are allowed to be around them and taught respect for them. I'd bet my entire collection (which is quite vast) of firearms that virtually all of the kids who shoot themselves or their friends, or bring an actual gun (not dummy ammo or harmless pocket knives) to school are the ones whose parent (yes I use singular in this case, figure it out libs) thought the way Brian Fantana does.
  • @John W
You make a very good point about how this all can be traced back to schools having to cover their @$$es from frivolous lawsuits. Unfortunately these policies are yet another bad result from our legal system and how it handles lawsuits.
  • 12-Gauge Toter
Policies are created to enable those in charge to avoid to make decisions. They make it easy for judgement to be issued swiftly, and that judgement is always uniform, and "fair". Too bad we don't have 'zero tolerance' policies when it comes to punishing actual criminals.
  • Hey, wait until they apply this kind of bureaucratic mentality to your healthcare.
Add to that Way higher costs, rationing and long waits, all courtesy of your benevolent overlord government.
  • ZERO TOLERANCE STRIKES AGAIN
I prefer to refer to them as Zero Intellegence policies.
  • Good Start
If kids learn at a young age to not hold guns or objects associated w/ guns, then they will leanr not to be the creeps in society today that have guns. Hence, lower crime rate, less accidental shootings, and a rise in intellectualism will come to America. What is wrong w/ that?
  • that's just
    ignorant
  • Zero Tolerance Policies
True, but those bureaucrats instituted them because whining parents kept complaining and/or suing every time a bureaucrat made a common sense decision that they (the parents) didn't like.
