"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that justifies it."

I've been telling you for a while now that the Value Added Tax (VAT) was a distinct possibility. Just last week I linked to an article outlining all of the signs that pointed to the fact that the VAT is coming.

So here it is. Princess Nancy has now asserted that a VAT is "on the table." And what table might that be? The table at which the people who have the power to change our tax code .. that's what table. So you certainly don't want to lose any sleep over this. There's looters at the table and producers propping it up. Then there's the moochers who are more than ready to give their loyalty to the looters. Where does that put you?

Soon the Democrats will realize what happens when you cut the legs out from under them. Why is that? Because the VAT would be in ADDITION to all of our current taxes. It's not reform, it's just more taxes (with some minor adjustments). We are not talking about an overhaul like the FairTax would achieve - complete abolishment of our current tax system. We are talking about MORE taxes.

But somehow, we are supposed to magically believe that this would not increase taxes on the middle class. At least, that is what Princess Nancy promises. Remember, though ... it's all in the meaning of the word "tax." If it was at one point in your pocket, and it then, without coercion and without your consent, ends of in the hands of government, it's a tax.

Hey! I think I just came up with a new definition of "tax!" Let's try to refine it:

"Money or property owned by a private entity that is transferred by force to the government."

I'm sure Obama would love it!

What others are saying

  • Gluttons for Punishment!
If the Dems thought it was fun facing constituents upset about Health Care, wait till they try explaining the need a VAT in today's economy. Nancy must be tired of flying in that huge gov. provided jet of hers.
  • True D
"My point was merely that by advocating a VAT-type tax, you put the idea in the minds of the Dems. That is all."

Infact I believe the first time this came up, several of us posted they had hijacked the FairTax idea. Dang it!
  • Milton Friedman where are you!!!
Not sure if Americans could even understand Friedman's wisdom these days, but we should could use him now.
  • Tim

If you want to believe that the Fair Tax push has not helped in getting the current administration to look at VAT-type taxes, then your conclusion is correct.

My point was merely that by advocating a VAT-type tax, you put the idea in the minds of the Dems. That is all.

HR 25 was doomed to fail precisely for the point you raise. HR 25 becomes law only if income taxes are repealed. My point was merely that NO country in the world, despite their best intentions, ever pulled off that type of tax switch. And shockingly (sarcasm intended) the US will not either.

BTW, I do agree that the Fair tax is a better tax system then we currently have. I am in the minority that does understand our current tax code, that is what 20+ years of corporate tax experience in both the US and Canada will do to you :)
  • @Jimmy Dolan
"Learn how to get around the tax code."

Sorry, but living on welfare does not count as "getting around the tax code."
  • Only in libtard land....
does raising taxes on Americans make sense in a shaky economy. That's what you get when you elect a bunch of lawyers and community organizers to office who know about as much about the economy and what makes it tick as Rosie O'Donnell does to losing weight.
  • oh yes it can...............
Joyce M/B.......oh hun....you's sooooooo friggin' wrong.......if the princess wants sumpin'...and the lil' boys want their testicals back.....she gits her way.........

SHUTTIN DOWN......now that yo' ass been kicked.....you have to go back and clean out all 38 of those cat litter boxes......NOW!!
  • To Jeff: everyone paying Vat Tax
Jeff said "if they are going to screw us with this tax then I guess we could look upon it as a way of finally making everyone pay into the pot...maybe not their fair share...but at least they are contributing something."

HA! Next, we will be hearing about the "Refundable Vat Tax Credit", available up to the top maximimun wage of the bottom 50% of wage earners. So far, EVERY new tax or funding method has taken this approach.
  • Let me guess this right...
the dimocraps are proposing yet ANOTHER tax in the middle of the worst recession since WWII? So they do want to push us into a depression.

    Time to discuss impeachment.
  • Mattis is a liar
No, I was saying that corporations that misappropriate investor money or violate SEC laws should be prosecuted. If corporations get around tax laws then that is not my problem. Nice try of putting words in my mouth though, think of an actual argument when you get a chance cleaning your guns.
  • going downhill fast
Just a few years ago you could not have convinced me that the people of the United States would ever let a socialist,Statist,Fascist,Marxist or a Communist gain any political power. Now we see what apathy and acquiescence has impaled upon us.I pray that the disinterested ones wake up by 2010 and pay attention. This nimiety of the democrats power grabbing is now deadly.
  • Weren't they just complaining that we aren't spending enough?
Slapping a VAT tax on everything is soooo gonna make people spend more money.

Let's see, tax from cap-n-tax, tax from ObamaCare, dollar rapidly depreciating, unemployment going up. And I'm sure I missed a few things.

No one will have any money to spend on much of anything except food and gas and bills, but I am fully aware that is the plan.

I am convinced that the Obama crowd is trying to destroy this country, so he can rebuild it into the socialist utopia that the liberals have envisioned. Re: Saul Alinsky
  • Delusional Tax Policy
This additional tax would be catastrophic to the economy just by itself! But with all the other third world banana republic economic stuff this government is pursuing this economy will go down faster than a U-Boat with a ruptured hull or to paraphrase a commenter on another blog concerning the dollar down faster than a cheap Friday night hooker. The economy will be completely FUBAR. The fools running this country are delusional. It’s time to discuss impeachment.

As Peter Schiff has said: “Brace for impact.”
  • If you...
know me you should already know what I am going to say about this...

    But here it goes anyways...

They want the VAT because just like the European Union, we will have a North American Union. This is all a part of our move toward the New World Order. As the world economy tanks other regional unions will form. The IMF will trade SDR's (Special Drawing Rights aka the new fiat currency) with the newly created "Federal Reserves" of each regional union. Each regional union will create their own new currency that everyone within the union will use. All trade will go through the IMF. No one union will be able to trade directly to another union. All treaties and trade deals will require IMF/UN approval. International sovereignty will end.
  • @ Jimmy Dolan re tax laws
I just recently learned that "tax on wages" may very well be a voluntary tax and am just beginning to investigate. Would you be inclined to help a fellow and elaborate?
  • I believe
that this onslaught of crap is either to wear us down and give up or to get as much of their crap through as they can or both.

It will be their undoing at some point.
  • Fair Tax and this?
D – Read HR-25 (Fair Tax). I have. It would only come into effect if the AMMENDMENT that allows the Federal government to tax income were repealed. That makes a huge difference! Your comparison it Bull.

Keep in mind that most people can read and understand HR-25 (the Fair Tax). How many can read and understand the 60,000 plus lines of tax code currently in operation?
  • VAT
if they are going to screw us with this tax then I guess we could look upon it as a way of finally making everyone pay into the pot...maybe not their fair share...but at least they are contributing something.

And "D"...the Fair Taxers are not to blame...anyone who has been to Europe...and that is probably everyone in congress...knows all about the VAT.
  • Incorrect liberal tax definition
Hey! I think I just came up with a new definition of "tax!" Let's try to refine it:

"Money or property owned by a private entity that is transferred by force to the government."

Wrong Boortz. Your assumption is that money is owned by private interests. The liberal definition:

Tax: The money that government retains to pay for its operation.

The idea here is that the money is owned by the government and we lowly citizens get an allowance distributed from our master.
  • Fair Tax =/= Value-Added Tax
Fair Tax is assessed on only the sale of goods and services to the end-user/consumer, i.e. retail sales.

Traditional VAT taxes (i.e. Canada) are assessed on every transaction, retail and wholesale (including distribution and logistics).

Fair Tax and VAT can produce the same revenues for the govt, the difference is that Fair Tax is visible to the end consumer, while the amount paid in VAT is invisible to the consumer.

Whats more, compliance costs for Fair Tax are significantly lower since collection and reporting is only handled by retailers (Walmart, Target, grocery stores, fast food places, etc.) and private citizens. Businesses that operate in wholesale markets do not collect the Fair Tax and as a result, can sell their products for less.
  • I think it's a diversion
They are just trying to scare people with this crap so that other crap won't look so bad.

    This can't possibly pass!!!
  • “There's looters at the table and producers propping it up. “
Hey you Statists on the Left, what are you going to do when the Producers stop propping up the table?
  • What have we learned in two millenia ...
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."

    --- Cicero , 55 BC

    Evidently not a blessed thing.
  • New Definition of Taxes
If this is the new definition ...
"Money or property owned by a private entity that is transferred by force to the government."

Then Social Security can no longer be considered a premium or service, it is a tax. Consequently when arguing about who pays taxes SS, FICA, Medicare, etc... must also be considered.
  • re: Read My Lips
Jimmy D, weren't you screaming for the tax evading corporations to be prosecuted? Typical liberal thought - I want everyone else to pay. Leave my stuff alone. And isn't "getting around" taxes actually working against your goal of wealth redistribution? A new formula - Liberal=hypocrite.
  • And it won't do what they think
If this gets passed, it will further hamstring the economy and the revenue gained from it will be far less than what the Dems think. This, of course, will be the perfect excuse in their minds to raise the rates even more.

    Oh, and,
    mattisben,
the pictures will need to have good looking women in them. And we need spokesmodels.
    Yes, all men are pigs.
  • Wher do i fall in?
Have brain injuey from military cervise where do i fall in this plan?
  • Tax the poor
Isn't the Value Added Tax a regressive tax? Don't the Democrats hate taxes that don't properly punish the achievers? Surely they can find a way to make the rich pay more....perhaps people can be given a token or a mark of some kind to identify them as evil rich versus noble poor so that the tax rate is charged differently.
  • Jack in Dayton
    I did it Jack.
Doing it your way would make it AVT instead of VAT, and I just couldn't allow that :)

I now consider my low class ass kicked into the next county :) :)
  • VAT
Was hopeful fair tax would be on the table but once the big O and the Dems took both houses I suspected the VAT would be on their minds to supplement the income tax. I guess the nation likes to pay lots and lots of taxes
  • Read My Lips
Learn how to get around the tax code. It is very easy if you just learn and quit crying all the time
  • VAT
Maybe this is a chance for some conservatives with stones to attach an amendment abolishing the income tax. Rather than throw our hands up and moan, this is a great opportunity to illustrate the Fair Tax to the public. It must be done very slowly, and with pictures though.
  • When will the secessions begin
The American Revolution was started over taxes and regulations. The War of Secession (that's the Civil War for you government school types and "Civil War" is a actually a misnomer.) was started over taxes and regulations. That's right over taxes and regulations, not over slavery as the government schools like to teach.

The question is this... when are States going to secede? If Texas seceded, I would move there in a heartbeat just to get out from under the US Federal Government's uber taxation and regulation.
  • This Can't Be Possible
"I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes."

    BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA, MMM-MMM-MMM
    SEPT 12 2008
  • The VAT will put an end
to many small businesses. "Mom and Pop" stores (I ran one for 6 years) usually operate at a competitive disadvantage when compared to big retailers. It's an economic reality, and we must live with it.

However, the VAT makes it that much more difficult for these folks to compete, since large retailers often buy directly from the factory, and smaller stores have to buy from 'middlemen'. The 'beauty' of the VAT is that the product is taxed every time it changes hands. It's also taxed at a government-established "market value". Thus it is theoretically possible to tax an item at its full retail value several times before it reaches the consumer. This will happen in addition to the extra 'markup' that will be placed on the item at every stop. Thus an item at a small retailer could easily cost up to twice as much as it would in a 'big box' store. Who thinks that is a good idea?

The inevitable result will be a drop in consumer spending, because even the large retailers will have to charge more for everything they sell. This will also lead to layoffs and/or total failures at small businesses.

All of this can only result in less revenue for the almighty Fed, and a further demand for government intervention.
  • VAT
WHO is the contemptible vulgarian who took the proper term ad valorem tax & re-named it "value added" tax? WHO? I want to kick his low class rump into the abutting county NOW.
  • VAT Taxes
This is why I was against the Fair Tax in the first place. Although the tax is a "better" tax, it was being sold by Neal et al as a REPLACEMENT for income taxes.

Check the history books. EVERY country that has a VAT type system started by claiming it would REPLACE income taxes, and, it has always ended up being in ADDITION to income taxes.

Want to complain about the Dems considering a new, additional tax? You Fair Taxers have yourselves to blame for pushing the idea so hard and bringing the new revenue source to their attention

    Thanks :(
