THE WUSSIFICATION OF AMERICA CONTINUES

Yesterday in Atlanta, we had a school in lockdown because somewhere in the area there had been a car-jacking. And I pointed out to the caller the fact that someday, these kids ... locked up inside a school, unable to play in dirt or eat birthday cake at lunch or play a sport that might cause bruising ... someday we are going to be asking these kids to fight for our country. Go, you little pansy, put your life on the line! There is no way in hell that these kids will be able to handle it.

And it is stories like this that just add to my collection of stories about the wussification of America. This story takes place in Delaware. Zachary Christie is 6-years-old. He recently joined the Cub Scouts. Good. I'm glad his parents signed him up for the Scouts, now we have to work on the whole government school thing ... but that is another rant. So Zachary joins the Cub Scouts and his parents take him to the store so he can buy some camping equipment. And Zachary is really excited about his new gadget - a camping utensil that serves as a knife, fork and a spoon. So Zachary packs his lunch for school the next day. In his lunch box he throws his new utensil so he can eat his lunch. So he gets to school, whips out his new utensil and it wasn't two minutes before Zachary is being harassed by school officials. Why? For bringing a knife to school.

Zachary is suspended from school. Not only that, but then he faces 45 days in the school district's reform school. Zero tolerance policies. He was accused of bringing a weapon to school and knives are strictly banned, "regardless of possessor's intent."

That, folks, is what we call the wussification of America. And you have government schools to thank for it.

What others are saying

  • forgot to mention...........
me and Ivan get our weapons from Joe in Dayton........he has an almost unlimited supply........

NOwhatifGAMES.......a 26 year old ex-con running with a 12" knife????? I know that that has to be illegal in at least 54 of our 57 state (osamabama said we got 57 of 'em......'member???) running with a 12" knife is worser than runnin' with scizzers in kindygarden......
  • accidents happen...
I guess everyone is confident that this child wouldn't be like 95% of all children and suddenly on the playground he is showing his buddies and everyone wants to hold it and mess with it. No chance of a kids actually getting hurt with a real knife, right? Hell, let's allow 12 year old Goths to roam the hauls of their middle school with a buck knife and ninja stars because god forbid Boortz thinks we are wussies for actually enforcing rules. I was part of the gun rack and buck knife crowd in Alabama in the 70's but these are different times with different kids. If you are not smart enough to see that then god help us all. This kid is an innocent little child apparently but if you make a rule you have to enforce it. That is why they are called rules. Punishment has to fit the crime but you can't just turn your head to a student with a knife in any situation.
  • @ Truthseeker Joyce -- Reread Boortz's Post -- He's Complaining About His Own Actions
Truthseeker, First, you need to actually thank me for putting 13 years of my life on the line defending your right to speak in this forum.

With that said, the culture is becoming feminized for males, as Neal puts it "Wussified" or as Rush puts it, "Chickified".

The problem is that we don't let boys be boys and we don't fathers in the homes. The fathers were replaced by the government with the "Great Society" from LBJ.

As I said in earlier posts, this story makes a great case for homeschooling kids. After all Tim Tebow the UF quarterback was homeschooled. He turned out quite well.
  • "What if" paper, scissors, rock.
Chairs, desks, writing utensils, there are weapons everywhere in school, and anywhere else. Try something doable, like teaching them not to use them on each other. We managed to do a pretty good job of that way back in the dark ages of education, before all that progress and federal money.
  • Wuss
The main ingredients to make our children wussies
Make sure we have a country of children raised by women
Make sure if the children have a father at home, he is brow-beaten daily in front of the kids into doing laundry, cooking, cleaning.
Make sure you let your kids watch the tube, video games instead of making them help around the house.
Make sure you teach them not to stand up for themselves or a smaller kid, and don't them to fight.
Never ever, teach them how to hunt, fish, or camp.
Make sure, when they are not playing video games, that the only books they read are Rainbow Fish
  • Ah, The memories
I remember a kid bringing a Samurai sword to a third grade show and tell. His dad took it off the body of a dead Japanese officer. It was razor sharp, shiny, and kind of scary looking. We kids loved it.
It never entered our minds that this kid could lop off a few classmates heads with it.
At what point did we lose our innocence?
Might I humbly suggest it was 1954 and the Brown vs Board of Education decision of the US Supreme Court? Our innocence was not lost immediately, but it has been all downhill from there.
  • wussification
To all you idiots that play the "what if another person stole the utensil and used it as a weapon to hurt a teacher or another student... " game!!!
PLEASE stop playing the "what if.. " game!!!! It's childess and stupid. Many 'what if' momments will happen in your lifetime, but that doesn't mean the daydream mommentary thought you just had will ever happen. Stop playing the what if game. The 6 year old was a Boy Scout with an eating utensil about to eat his lunch, not a 26 year old agressive criminal straight from prison with a 12 inch knife running around trying to stab someone. The thing I'd like to know is if the 6 year little boy got to eat his lunch that day!!!!
  • Missing the point
While I don't believe the proposed punishment is appropriate, I do believe the parents need to be held accountable.

Someone who just joined scouts, as his father attests, should not just be handed a knife and sent along his way. They earn that privilege at about the Bear rank.

If a note had been sent to the teacher in advance, and approval gained, this would not have been an issue. Instead, a known rule was broken and the parents want to declare themselves victims.

The den leader who has picked up this boy has a lot of work ahead.
  • Scouting Knives
I think back to elementary school and how all the boys in Cub Scouts proudly took our new Boy Scout knives to school to show off to all of our friends AND teachers. 75% of the boys at my elementary school would have spent time at the "reform school." Zero tolerance is just a way for teachers and administrators to use 0% of their brains.
  • What you are here for?
Sorry to point out the truth about your hero, but that's what I'm here for.
    By TruthSeeker

Nothing better to do huh? No that is NOT what you are here for. No one assigned you to this task unless you want to tell us who is financing your efforts??? Are you coming out as a paid troll?

    You're an arrogant jerk.
  • Wussification of America
    Neal:
I went to a private school in '78-84 and one guy brought in an Enfield rifle (British WWI/II rifle). All he had to do is leave it with his teacher. The next year he brought in a fake hand grenade. Nobody had any issues with that. Talk about a different world.
  • Big Joe reminded me....
When school integration started, you couldn't keep your guns in the gun rack in your truck because the black boys would break the window out and steal them, and they were bad about pulling a knife and cutting someone. That was one of the reasons weapons started being banned.
  • If Utensils are outlawed...
Then The Steaks will have free reign of the Dining room!
  • Neal needs to stop running on public teachers.
Neal's comment today about how public teachers and administrators are less intelligent and productive than the average person because they work for the government. I attended public schools K-12 and proceded to get my B.S. in biomedical sciences from Texas A&M and am now at a 4.0 in a masters of biology program at UTSA and I still use information from my high school and middle school teachers to this day. I plan on getting my masters and teaching at a public school on the premise that I am well educated and because of my knowledge gained at public schools I can now reach out and get kids interested in education and building connections from original thought. I would advise all of Neals listeners to think because he's not. He's just rambling and arguing passionately. Public teachers are no worse than any other educators simply because they get money from the government.
  • I Finally Figured it out.......
Dolan and seeker are failed AIR AMERICA TALK show hosts and they hate anyone succsessful!
  • SPEAKING of Wussification...
When I was in elementary school over 25 years ago, we would wear our Brownie uniforms on the day we had our weekly, after-school meeting. Some kids began to feel excluded because they weren't members of the Brownies/GirlScouts and didn't have a uniform. Soooooo, what did we do to make everyone feel better? No more Brownie-gear at school! Not a beanie, not a sash, not even a pin!

...And now, these kids I went to school with, whose parents were SO upset that their children felt excluded, are running school boards and schools, and making policy...And THEY have kids, and THEY (like their parents before them) wanna protect their kids from hurt feelings (and CubScout eating utensils)!

    Gimme a break!!! Enough already!

When did we stop wanting to use our brains?
  • Zero tolerance
Time to take the pens and votes away from the Executive and Legislative branches of gov't because they do more damage with those tools than any kid could do with this camping equipment!!
  • not so innocent 13 y.o
That punk would have brought his own knife to school, he would not need to steal the 6 year old's
  • Re Alabamastan
Wow, I have a really good solution to your scenario. The principle should be allowed to use DEADLY FORCE against any soon to be former student that pulls a weapon. DEAD RIGHT THERE works, it has a 0 recidivism rate. One or two morons get dropped in the hall and all the other would be morons get the message!

Yes, I have heard all the "children don't have adult impulse control" BS. There were weapons around when I was a kid, but we didn't touch them unless we were having target practice or went hunting (both with my dad's supervision). My neighbors all had weapons as well, but somehow none of us went to school to use one. Except for a few rabbits and squirrels, no one got shot either. Most of the people I knew could have take a sidearm to school, and it would never have been used. None of us ever took a firearm to school, mostly because there was nothing there to hunt, and the things get heavy after a while when you are a kid.

Zero tolerance rules are all about keeping the tort bar from having a field day suing the schools. It is a sad state of affairs that objects which are a part of our birthright and on which every individual should be trained(weapons), are forbidden anywhere, but that is what the courts have wrought in society.
  • I can............................
after spending many years at the G.I. Joe skool of fightin' and killin' a-kad-o-me as an instrukter me and Ivan can kill you 36 different ways with a cat turd......we just don't carry 'em while they're warm........
  • SHEER STUPIDITY
People, do you realize that a pencil can be used as a weapon? Even a pen can be used. Just drive the little suckers into to someone and all hell breaks loose. Has anyone ever considered that a computer can be used to bludgeon? And how about a school book, you could put the beat down on someone with one..... Please people, WAKE UP!!! The next thing we will be seeng is "children attending the ...... school must use crayons as it has been determined they have the lowest possible % of being used as a stabbing weapon.
  • wussification
Hopefully, the parents realized the insanity and the over-reaction to the scout gadget and pulled their kid from the school and either enrolled him in a private school or will start to home-school him.

Hopefully also, these parents' neighbors will see the inanity of the situation and take their kids out of government schools too. I know it's a lot to ask, but we have to hope that America is saved through one ridiculous incident at a time.
  • A Nation of Wussies
Obama caving to the queerosexuals in the military also makes us appear weak.

I don't care about your "sexual orientation, preference, confused minds, curious minds, diverse lifestyle, alternative lifestyle" either. Don't shove it down my throat by force or I will resist.

If you want to be openly gay and be in the United States Military at the same time, don't go to one or the other. They are not allowed to mix for a reason.

When you join the United States military, you have rules and the rules work until you start changing them to accommodate select individuals that might get their feelings hurt.

My nephew wants to be a USMC officer - that is what he wants to do. He would make a good officer.

He has no tolerance for open homosexuality in the armed services and thought what a good place to go to be as far away as possible from the undisciplined and pitiful cultures sweeping our nation. Somewhere a man can be a man...

So now what is he supposed to do?

Way to go, Obama. I know a big wuss when I see one. You look like a fool saluting when you bet off Air Force One. I think it actually hurts him to do it.

    Stay out of the kitchen.
  • balance
First, let me say that I think zero tolerance = zero thought.

But just for argument's sake, let's say this innocent 6 y.o. cub scout took his spoon to school to eat his pudding with. And let's say a not so innocent 13 y.o. 6th grader noticed the spoon also had a 3 inch knife blade attached. And say this 6th grader steals it. And he pulls it on a teacher he's had run-ins with. And the principal tries to disarm the student and ends up with a 3 inch blade (spoon attached) sticking out of his neck. What's the reaction then?

The tool should have been taken away and the parents called in for a meeting. It's their fault that they didn't emphasize to their child that the blade was dangerous and was never to leave the house without their knowledge. But suspending the kid serves no purpose.
  • Joyce -- Reread Boortz's Post -- He's Complaining About His Own Actions
Joyce -- Go back and reread Boortz's opening paragraph. He claims that the problem with the wussification of America is the following:

"[S]omeday we are going to be asking these kids to fight for our country. Go, you little pansy, put your life on the line! There is no way in hell that these kids will be able to handle it."

I merely pointed out that "tough-guy" Boortz couldn't handle it either.

Sorry to point out the truth about your hero, but that's what I'm here for.
  • It's mainly about lawyers
Zero tolerance absolves the school from making decisions concerning the appropriateness of any activity. Lawyers and their money-grubbing little clients find it difficult to find a handle on a published school policy that is administered without compromise.
The public school system, along with healthcare and worker's compensation are partly in the trouble they are in due to an out of control legal system.
Too many lawyers, not enough pie.
  • wussies
When my grandpa went to school, he carried a gun every day as did most of the boys.

He needed it to protect his sisters if some wild animal threatened them. Oh and if he happens to see that might be good for dinner to shoot it and bring it home.

The boys put the guns in the armory during the day and took them home after school. There were no problems with students shooting eachother.

Guns have not changed, people have.
  • Target Practice
I think they should bring back the gun safety and marksmanship classes. People who really understand weapons don't tend to glorify their use, but see them as tools for hunting or defense.

Of course, a side benefit is that maybe the gangs would then eliminate each other from the gene pool and stop hitting innocent by-standers.
  • zero tolerance
The cold contempt for obvious lack of malign intent on the part of the technical violator in these infernal policies is pure stalinism. To do this sort of thing to a normal 6 year old boy sickens me. In 1966 when I was 6 years old I liked in addition to knives guns, spears, tomahawks, air force jets, space ships--so long as they had ray cannon forward--cops, specially riot cops, American soldiers in Viet Nam, The Big Valley on televizion because there was ALWAYS a fist fight, Batman on televizion & in comic books, Batman & Superman teamed up in World's Finest Comics--that was the comic book's actual title, kids--the Green Hornet & Kato because they were so cool & had their OWN zero tolerance policy yo, the Saturday morning Superman cartoon--loved how the Parasite exploded after stupidly trying to absorb too much of Superman's colossal power into his far frailer mundane frame--J Edgar Hoover who faithfully guarded us from communism, the committee on un-American activities of the federal house of representatives which at the time was leaning hard on the vile Ku Klux Klan, cowboys & Indians alike because who does NOT like cowboys? & I am part cherokee; all this without a malign cell in my body. In any conceivable clash between public school types with their putrid zero tolerance policies which are notional solutions in search of problems, on 1 hand, & normal 6 year old boys on the other my judgment will ever be for 6 year old boys.
  • Anti-wussification
I am teaching my 13 year old, government educated (conservative straight A gifted student with a physical disability)
nephew everything I know about weapons with hands on training including revolvers, shotguns, semi auto handguns and semi auto rifles.
He is eager to learn and learns quickly.
At least he won't be one of the wussies that couldn't defend he and his family if need be.

Who was it that said "I wouldn't invade the United States. There would be a gun behind every blade of grass."?
  • And we're supposed to be "surprised" by this story?
Come on, Neal. Everyone knows that government schools are breeding grounds for limp-wristed, mush-brained liberals. Just look at the comments posted by government-educated illiterates on this board....
  • cubscout
while i agree that "zero tolerance" requires zero thinking, the parents are responsible for putting this kid in this situation. i have been an assistant scoutmaster for 8 years. parents don't read the handbooks except for the advancement requirements. a cubscout may not have a knife until he earns his "whitlin chip", demonstrating proper use. this cannot be earned until they are about 8 or 9. so, the kid may not use a knife yet. even at a scouting event.
  • Who you trying to impress?
How 'bout that for being a wussie? His name's Neal Boortz.
    By TruthSeeker

Don't be an ass. Going off on completely unnecessary tangents puts you in the same class as Jimmy Dolan.
  • students
I remember as a little kid asking my Mom
if it was ok to watch some big kids remove a nuissance stump with a stick of dynamite. Of courede she said I could watch.
  • Attention Students
Because of recent "Food Fights," solid foods are now classified as weapons. They are hereby banned from campus. The cafeteria will now only serve broth for lunch.
As children can drown in 1-2 inches of liquid, the soup will not be served in bowls buy rather very shallow plates bolted to the tables so that the plates themselves cannot be thrown and enter the weapon classification.
Spoons cannot be used as they are suspected as being capable of cutting out hearts (see Robin Hood Prince of Thieves).
Straws can poke eyes out, they are banned.
You will be expected to lap up your broth as it is the only acceptable manner in which to eat.
Get use to your role as "dog." Your government thanks you.
  • @ SysOp
Please don't give them anymore ideas...
  • What about the teachers.
Do they suspend the teachers that use a knife to cut the cakes ? What about all the people that work in the lunch room. They all have weapons. What's good for the student's is good for the faculty
  • Boortz is the Biggest Wussie of Them All
You're too late to complain about the wussification of America, Boortz. American has always been full of wussies.

I know one "patriot" who went to Texas A7M during the height of the Vietnam War. Even joined the Corp.

Then, when the time came for him to serve his country, he abandoned it instead. Never even put on the uniform.

Instead, he moved to Atlanta, became a right-wing "pro-America" talk-show host and urged others to fight and die for their country.

How 'bout that for being a wussie? His name's Neal Boortz.
  • wussication
i hate the wussication of america. i remember reading about how somebody who hated harley davidson motorcycles. he said they were too loud. oooh boo hoo.

    talk about wussy.
  • Government Schools
If you take your child to a government school then you should be put in jail. And no rants about not being able to afford it. I have home schooled my children and there are plenty of aids/books out there that can be borrowed or purchased used. My first son, Master of Science from Ohio State. Second son, second year at A&M, straight A's, including Physics, Math, Chemistry, P-Chem. My daughter wants to go to Hilldale College. We have rejected all scholarships though we qualify through Native American status and income level. So Jimmy, take your liberal drivel and shove it.
  • Jimmy
    Hey Dolan,
Stop posting your crap multiple times! Just reading one of your lying rants is bad enough, but multiple copies? Especially while trying to eat breakfast!
    Damn. Just damn!
  • Rule of Law
    Neal,

Are we are under the rule of law or the rule of man? This is a bad law, but it is the law. However, this same law also punishes thugs who bring weapons to school. Let's work to change the "zero-tolerance" law instead of always telling stories about "innocent" kids who got punished because they were in violation of the law.
  • @ Jimmy Dolan
Jimmy: You have good points about some of these shenanigans during Reagan and Bush. But it would have been better if Reagan achieved his goal of completely dismantling the US Department of Education. Then each district could decide how to handle issues as these. ...Or better yet, the tax savings would actually permit one parent to stay at home to homeschool their children.

Before you knock homeschooling, remember that UF quarterback Tim Tebow was homeschooled.
  • Thanks, Jimmy
For reminding me about the "knife" policy in these schools these days. When I was in school, EVERY young elementary school boy had his Swiss Army scout knife on them at all times. But, now if a kid is caught on school grounds with a knife, he is expelled and the police are called. Did you put YOUR kid on one of those yellow busses this morning?
  • Cub Scout Knife-Wielding Maniac
Yeah, that kid was a danger alright. "Nobody move or I'll SPORK your guts all over this cafeteria!"
  • school
I was in high school in the early 80's and I brought a pocket knife to school every day as did most of the guys in school. Many of the pick-up trucks had rifles and shotguns in plain view in rear window gun racks. If a teacher said somehting about one, it was just to admire the gun. There were fights of course, but no one ever pulled a knife or a gun in a fight. Times have changed.
  • Small Bright Side
I did see the report last night, and there was one small bright side, for the family involved at least. The parents did say they are looking into homeschooling now. Too bad it took this to get them to that point though.
  • the case for homeschooling
Neal you just made another case for homeschooling. Unfortunately, since we have high taxes to pay for the Democrat vote buying schemes, many who would like to home school can't as they are paying their tax burden.

Also, after my wife had started to pay attention to these shenanigans, she finally agreed with me that homeschooling would have been a better option for our kids.
  • Wussies.
I had a discussion the other day with a fellow about the way things used to be in this country. My how things have changed...

A little more than twenty years ago, I took an archery class in 7th grade. Our class was taken outside to a range where we shot real bows and arrows. Very sharp ones! It never crossed our minds to ever point one at another student. We weren't raised that way.

The fellow I talked with reminded me of "Shooting Class" where highschool students were taken to an indoor range(on school grounds) where they were allowed to target-shoot .22 caliber rifles.

Also, I had an older brother who built a crossbow in his highschool shop class. A very real, very powerful working crossbow. He got an "A".

And also, when we were in highschool, students were allowed to go to the "Smoking Lounge"(on school grounds) to smoke between classes or during breaks.

And, back when I went to school, it was typical to see a truck in the school parking lot with a gun rack hanging in the back window with guns in it.

And now just look at these pathetic American schools ran by mindless bureaucrats who pay no price for being wrong.
Now, if you bring a gun on school grounds you will be expelled and the police will be called to arrest you! Hell, the way it is now, if a student even DRAWS A PICTURE OF A GUN then they are EXPELLED from school. How's that for brainwashing? Now, if you smoke on school grounds, you will be suspended or expelled. These kids are being softened up, dumbed-down and BRAINWASHED. They are being taught to be stupid and defenseless. These are tomorrow's voters. I think America's best days are behind her. God Bless America.
  • And why can't UGA have a nativity scene this year?!?!
'Cause they can't find three wise men and a virgin!
  • boy bringing utensils to school
In an interview with his parents last night on a news program, the parents stated that they will now be home schooling the boy. He will be much better off, and now he can eat lunch with his camping equipment every day!!
  • Not just wussification
it's a great example of big government wanting total control over your everyday life.
  • What do you expect
Just look at the coke snoprting wimp in the WH
  • Yeah, that seems fine to me
The punishment is a little harsh, but I would not mind at all sending my kids to a school w/ a no-knife policy.

I am shocked how conservatives have wussified school though. I was in elementary school during the Reagan and Bush I years. I wasnt even allowed to bring a compass for math class. Not surprised that conservatives are the ones that send our military into areas w/o training them or giving them proper armor
