Hey, look you guys! Now we know what Neal did during his flight. Here's his take on the Nobel Prize news. -ww

So ... you want to know what is going on here? I mean, come on! Barack Obama, president for what, nine months now? And he gets the Nobel Peace Prize?

Hopefully you weren't all that surprised.

Let's work through this thing. First - you have to come up with a definition of "peace." There's a Nobel Prize for physics; one for medicine too. In virtually every culture and every country in the world you define "physics" and "medicine" pretty much the same way. Not so for "peace." During the post World-War II the Soviet Union defined "peace' as "an absence of opposition to world Communism." As long as nobody was challenging their communist expansionism they felt we were all at peace. Let some country; The United States for instance, challenge their plans for world domination and ... no more peace.

For me any definition of "peace" must have a component dedicated to freedom. You can, after all, live a life of peace in a jail cell, so long as there isn't someone there to stir things up. You're not free, but peace reigns.

Now ... to Obama and the Peace Prize. I take you back again to that Pew Research poll conducted in Europe last year. Almost 60% of Europeans who responded to the poll wanted America to be less powerful in world affairs. That's not an uncommon sentiment - right up until the time some other country is threatening to kick some international tail.

So ... along comes the Nobel committee. Can we reasonably assume that this committee reflects much of the European attitude? I mean, they're not exactly headquartered in Boise. They look at the nominations before them, and there's PrezBO! Now what has Obama done in the past nine or so months? Why, he's given the Euro-weenies just exactly what they wanted! Now we have a United States with a weaker presence in world affairs! Russia and China are striving for military domination. Obama backs off the American promise of a shield against Iran's missiles for Eastern Europe. Then we have the Arab states reportedly working to replace the dollar as the petroleum trading currency. Today there are suggestions that Obama is just going to declare that the Taliban are too entrenched in Afghanistan for us to possibly prevail there - a prelude to a cut and run. Does any of this sound like a projection of strength? Of course not. America is projecting feel-good, hopey-changey weakness at every turn.

This was a message to Obama. Europe likes your style. You're giving us exactly what we wanted --- what we asked for. You're weakening the United States; for us, the key to peace.

Oh ... and don't forget the slap in the face for George Bush. Bush is in office for eight years. He responds strongly to the attacks from terrorist Muslims. He frees iraq from a ruthless dictator and his rapist sons. He projects American strength .. and Europe hates him for it. So ... the Nobel committee comes along and delivers a slapdown.

For those who define peace as an living free of threats to your natural right to be free ... this just isn't your day, is it?

Well ... at least this will give Newsweek a reason to put Obama on the cover again.

What others are saying

  • Pres Obama
i would like to nominate President Obabma for the Heisman Trophy - he's done just as much to earn that award too.
  • Think that was a joke?
Wait until he gets the Heisman Trophy...
  • Nobel Prize Nomination Process
According to Nobelprize.org invitations to submit nominations would have been sent out in September of 2008 so, yeah, it could be safely suspected that the entire gesture was cut and dried before the recipient ever TOOK OFFICE and therefore MUST be contrued as blatant political meddling. The Nobel Foundation statutes, it is also said "restrict disclosure of information" pertinent to the selection process, including that regarding identification of the nominator or references to investigative work that might have been used to undergird or verify a nominator's assertions. This amounts to a valuable feature for those wishing to pull rabbits out of their political hats!!

Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize using the foreign policy concept first introduced 20+/- years ago by Mr. Rodney King -- the "Can't we all get along? Doctrine." As such, Rodney King should receive the Nobel Peace Prize and Mr. Obama should receive the Rodney King Award for Naivety

  • peace prize?
In related news, the State... Department also found it was Obama, not Salk who discovered the Polio vaccine, Obama, not Pasteur, who is responsible for germ theory, and also that Obama is the author of the Bible.
  • Peace Prize
Yo Barry, I'm really happy for you, and I'ma let you finish, but Al Gore had the most undeserved Nobel Peace Prize of all time.
  • Peace Prize
I went to Europe to bring home the Olympics and all I got was this stinkin' peace prize...
  • Nobel
From the Sports world, The Detroit Lions have won the Nobel Peace Prize in the "Make other Teams Feel Good" category, For losing so many games last year. The LA Clippers won for Basketball, and the 1962 New York Mets for Baseball.
  • Nobel prize for Ol' bammy
the Nobel Nomination deadline is no later than 1 Feb, before He took office. Sooo, Obama"s win is like Nominating and Giving a person an Oscar for an unmade movie.... Obama's Perception Managers have been working overtime.
  • Peace Bribe
And right before he has to make the decision to send more troops to Afghanistan. Awkward!
  • i got one too
i was woken by a pjone call that i won the nobel prize for mowing my lawn, whudathunk. at least i put more effort into mine.
  • There was no...
plan to block missles from Iran. You don't build a wall of anti-missle batteries along Russia's border to stop Iranian missles. That's where you put them to stop RUSSIAN missles.
  • Peace Bribe
I think this should be named Nobel Peace Bribe
  • get it right.....................................
    he is halfwhite damn it.......
  • the prize
Please "change" the name to the 'NEVILLE CHAMBERLAIN APPEASEMENT AWARD'. Did he win for try to put a socialist leader back in central america after his congrss removed him?or not meeting with the Dahli Lama and our allies but meeting with enemies and allowing terrorist on U.S. soil (NY) ? Maybe leaving eastern europe and 80 U.S. Bases in range of iranian/soviet sold missles? Or supporting Isreal so much? surely his peaceful stand on the huge gun/drug/illegal alien problem that he stopped in March, by opening the borders!!!
  • Re: butt neckid
Of course he will. The rules will be changed just for him. He is the Chosen One after all. And now NO BULL is apparently not about what you have done, but what you promise to do. And what bigger promise could any person make in the area of Economics than to promise to fix the US economy, and subsequently, the world, with pork products. Bacon Rules!!!
  • peace and freedom
I don't think Obama deserved this prize at all. But I disagree with the definition of Peace. Peace means just that. Peace. It does not mean freedom or any other quality. You can always argue whether peace by itself is good or not and come to a conclusion that peace by itself is not necessarily good but don't mix two meanings together.
  • Donate the prize money to the treasury
I'm sure he would never give the money to the federal treasure, but he will give it all to charity to avoid paying his fair share of taxes. Lord knows the treasure could use a little charity under this guys watch.
  • Curtsy
So you bow to the Saudi king and you get a Nobel Peace Prize. What happens if you curtsy?
  • Even some liberals don't like the award for Obama!

  • will he git anuther....................
will osamabama git the prize fo' economic next year??????
  • The Nobel "Ap"Peace Prize
If you look at the list of folks he beat out, it’s easy to see how Obama won this award. Does this mean that Obama will win the NL & AL Cy Young Awards as well as the MVP of the NFL. All this means that my Aunt Thelma’s 1st Place Prize for her Peach Cobbler now has more credibility and prestige than the Nobel prize.
  • Long URLs
Off topic, but may I recommend if you have a URL that goes on forever that you go to tinyURL.com and convert it to something that won't break the page? For example, the long URL below can be converted to http://tinyurl.com/ygqzuab
  • What about Reagan??
What do you expect from an organization that gave the same award to Gorbachev in 1990 and not to Reagan. Reagan oversaw the the end of the Cold War and got the USSR to sign the INF Treaty which took ~2,600 Nuclear warheads off the face of the planet!

    This award is a Joke
  • Nobel Prize for Race
For all the conservatives out there thinking BO was awarded this prize based on race - you should know better by now. Get it straight, guys:
Race is only the motivating factor when something BAD happens or is said of BO.
Race is never the motivating factor for GOOD things that come to him... like, being elected for starters.
This award, like his presidency, was awarded based on the record of his accomplishments alone. Its amazing how both of those lists look like one single bullet point on a post it note.
Obama's followers feel they deserve something for doing nothing, right? The Nobel Prize has now become their trophy... a prize for doing nothing.
Its very unlike me to point out BO's good points, but you have to give him credit for not being a complete dumba$$. At least he is even smart enough to know that he doesn't deserve it.
  • NPP
Sounds right to me obamy in good company with that terrorist arafat.
    Creek Woman
  • Brace for Impact
This is a worrisome development not because I care who gets the Nobel Peace Prize but because it will give a boost to the profligate fools in the government whose hubris and megalomania will drive us over a cliff. Look, it has started already:

“I am most surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel committee,” Obama said at a news conference in the White House Rose Garden today. “I will accept this award as a call to action.”

We know what action he is called to. It’s called Marxism. It will bury us economically and perhaps national defense wise if successful. We have to stop these idiots before it’s too late. Brace for impact and just hope we can start the turnaround on 11/04/2010 before there is too much damage.
  • Dear wxw101
Not wanting to get in a debate or argue with the others on here but yes, the Bible does mention a man that will step out on the world stage. Pretty much out of nowhere if I am not mistaken. As a Christian I will admit my friends and I have had banter about Obama and those passages. Time will tell if BHO could be this guy or if he is just another test dummy to see how ready the world is for the real thing. Some days I strongly want to say "real thing" most days I say "test dummy".
  • If
If Obama feels he does not deserve it, why can't he decline it?
  • Obama Punk'd
Obama's been punk'd, right? This is a joke, huh? This award was made meaningless after it was given to Yasser Arafat. Who would want this awarded to them now? Jesse Jackson? Hugo Chavez?
  • yep
    CUZ........do I get a prize????oxoxox
  • devaluation
Sadly, this "big win" for obozo is probably the big win for his tenure in the WH.
Worse is the devaluing of the "award" that was given to him ... a.. not earned.

And buying off of a kenyian president with dollars. Which are worth less today than yesterday and will be further devalued by the time he gets the check.

    what a joke.
  • WYF?
Just call it the No-Balls Appease Prize
  • @butt
you're going to leave that in every thread until someone pats you on the head and says "good dog" aren't you, cuzz?
  • NO BULL PISS PRIZE...............
    hahahahahahahaha
  • weakening America is right
What a bunch of crap. GW should have been awarded this crap-heap, Euro-weeney prize for his tireless efforts, and $gozillions, that went into feeding and providing medical care to starving, diseased Africans.

Europeans are despicable girly-men .... absolutely pathetic. These nitwits don't have enough sense to bathe on a regular basis, much less decide what's good for the world.

Neal's on the right track, but the criteria for this prize is really a little bit more cut-and-dry. You have to hate America and Israel, pure and simple. And if you're an American .... additional brownie points.
  • 12 Days... It's good to be the Messiah
And on the 12th day, the Messiah rested and reflected on his accomplishments; World Peace, harmony, and good health for all. It's good to be the Messiah.

You know I am not really a Christian nor do I have a wild imagination, but the reverence the world places in this figure is uncanny. Not that I want to go on a crazy tangent, but didn't the bible refer to a false prophet?

Eerie stuff my friends. This man is so loved for doing nothing but being.
  • Good Point?
No Title of Nobility shall be granted by the United States: And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress, accept of any present, Emolument, Office, or Title, of any kind whatever, from any King, Prince or foreign State.
  • Thank President Obama
... for giving hope to 'C' students everywhere that they can maintain a 2.0 GPA or lower, and still be picked as class valedictorian.
  • Nobel Prize
I lost faith in this award when it was given to Yassir Arafat.
  • U.S. Constitution
Does Article 1 Section 9 apply?
  • What F'ing For?
Ever since the Obama mob has gained ascendancy in this once great country I get the feeling I am living in a weird Hieronymus Bosch painting.
  • Bush hating
I agree, this was a slap at Bush.

Question will be, as the republican party becomes smaller and more regionalized ( http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2009_09/020010.php) - will anyone on that side stop for a second and ask themselves "why do ya suppose that is?"

    ...didnt think so...

and the numbers continue to sink...

  • Why does this thing make me so mad?
    Been thinking about it.
Maybe its because my World-view seems so different to that of those institutions I once esteemed. As an old counter culture type from the 60's, I wept when MLKjr was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He earned it with his blood, sweat, and tears.
Hey, I don't blame Obama for taking the money. Maybe he can now afford to divorce that embarrasment he's married to.
But, unfortunately for me, another institution that I once esteemed has now joined my s**t list by bestowing honor on someone who has done diddly-squat to earn it.
  • hahahahahahaha
piece prize???? hahahaha....... crap we even lost the war with the moon.....

    way to go osamabama!!!!!
  • Peace Prize?
So, Mr Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize?
So did Yassir Arafat. Whats your point?
  • Peace Prize
With all due respect to President Obama, the best that can be said of this clear absurdity is that it was awarded extremely prematurely.

The nominations closed less than 3 weeks after he took office. He had no time to accomplish anything of substance yet in that short period.
It cheapens the award and the credibility of the man if nothing else if even he doesn't acknowledge that it was not yet earned.

Anyone can hope for change, make great speeches of dreams, of peace etc but that doesn't make them reality.

Just because Bush wasn't popular doesn't make this man the Savior of the world and to be blunt - why are we concerned with world popularity anyway?

We have a lot of work yet to do to salvage our country and our own problems. This should not have even entered into the equation. We are going down a dangerous path here and all we keep hearing is about false charges of racism for disagreeing with policies, name calling and being accused of being brain washed neo cons.

Can anyone liberal or conservative give me one concrete accomplishment demonstrating that this award was earned in any way? I doubt that is possible. Shame on the committee and shame on our President if he accepts an award he knows he didn't truly earn. I would hope he is a better man than that at least.
  • Yea, right
NEVER, and I repeat NEVER, ever utter the phrase "All hat, no Cattle" to me again.

Doubt anyone could ever sink lower than this.
  • 12 days! What a joke!
Nominations for this "Prize" were closed just 12 days after the coronation of The 'O'. What the hell could anyone have done in 12 days? Now, given the 9 months he has been in office before the actual vote... he has managed to bow down to several world leaders, deconstruct the defense of Eastern Europe and generally weaken and talk down The United States in his travels abroad! Oh and don't forget he went down in flames at the Olympic committee! What a joke this Nobel Prize has become!
  • Coming Soon - The Nobel Show
The newest reality TV show - The Nobel Show. Every week, new competitions in the various disciplines with you, the audience calling in to cast your vote! All calls toll free in Europe and only 99 cents in the U.S.

It is unfortunate that the Nobel prize is now nothing more than a popularity contest. I thought it was actually supposed to MEAN something.
  • Imma let you finish
Mr. Obama, I'm happy for you and Imma let you finish, but Mother Theresa won the best peace prize ever!!
  • Definition of peace
Among individuals, as well as among nations, the respect for another one's rights is the true meaning of peace.

If the talkmaster wasn't U.S. goverment educated he might have had that definition down by now.
  • What The?
He basically has been given the Noble Prize for not being George W. Bush. Hey, I couldn't stand Bush either. But don't you think he should, you know, DO SOMETHING first? Like end a war?
  • Serenity to accept the things I cannot change
I'm happy for President Obama, but sad that the U.S. has fallen so low in world opinion that all our President has to do to get the Nobel Peace Prize is stop torturing people and start no new wars for nine months.

Don't forget: for 8 years all we heard was you don't have to like the president, just respect the office.
  • Peace Prize
Hurray!!! About time Obama got some recognition for all the....uh...wait a minute. What exactly did he do?
  • Peace Prize
    Well written and thoughtful.
  • Nomination Deadline was February 1st
Obama was in office for about 11 days at that time. I bet he achieved a lot of peace during that time. One pundit had it right, the ONLY reason he won was because he wasn't George W. Bush.
  • Obama peace Prize
Strange that the Nominations for this prize were due by Feb/2009, a week after he (Obama) entered office. So what was it for?
  • Peace Prize
It was not for 9 months in office. The deadline for nomination was two weeks after he was inaugurated.
  • Obama Wins Nobel
Surely there must me some mistake. Maybe they meant to award him the Nobel Appease Prize.
