OBAMA'S PLANS TO RAISE TAXES

I've told you plenty of times that the Obama administration has absolutely no chance of sticking to its promise that it will not raise taxes on people earning under $250,000. But then he supports cap-and-tax legislation. Healthcare legislation. All of which will constitute in tax increases, whether Barack Obama considers them "taxes" or not. But another idea floating around out there is the VAT tax. So here is James Pethokoukis to connect the dots and explain how a VAT tax seems more likely than ever:

1) The joint statement from the just-concluded G20 Summit in Pittsburgh called for balanced global growth -- which means Americans must spend less and save more and reduce its budget deficit.

2) That same weekend, John Podesta, co-chairman of Obama's presidential transition team and an outside White House adviser, tells a Bloomberg reporter that a value-added tax is "more plausible today" than ever, adding that "there's going to have to be revenue in this budget." A VAT is a kind of consumption tax.

3) Yesterday, the Center for American Progress, the liberal think tank with close White House ties, holds a conference on the rising national debt. While speaker after speaker -- Paul Krugman, Roger Altman, CAP President Podesta (again), Laura Tyson -- admits entitlement spending must be reduced, they also agree that taxes must be raised. Altman suggests $400 billion in new tax revenue is needed almost immediately to calm financial market fears, and a VAT would be a great way of doing it. That's $400 billion a year, by the way, not over ten years.

4) Also, yesterday was the first meeting of President Obama's tax reform panel led by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker. In a two-part interview with Charlie Rose airing yesterday and today, Volcker says that if Washington can't get spending under control, either a VAT or a carbon tax would be effective revenue raisers. "Those are two big ones," he says.

5) As they used to say in the Soviet Union, "It's no coincidence." This is also the conclusion of one Washington insider with ties to the White House economic team: "Does this all add up to a trial balloon? Of course, it's a trial balloon. And I expect the administration will propose major tax reform, including a VAT."

What others are saying

  • 47% will pay no federal income tax!
See the CNN news story: 47% will pay no federal income tax!

    http://money.cnn.com/2009/09/30/pf/taxes/who_pays_taxes/index.htm?cnn=yes

I am outraged! I had no idea the problem was this bad. These people are nothing but filthy beggars!!! And, now it’s time to start paying for their health-care. Give me a break. I’d rather be mugged, there’s more dignity in it.

We need a new political party in this country, the two we’ve got are nothing but robbing everyone. The republicans are steeling from the middle class and giving to the rich and the democrats are buying votes with our money by allowing this bunch of freeloaders to get a free ride.
  • Oh, thanks for the explanation Truth Twister
What? Get "used" to it? Because Buuuuuush started deficit spending, it's OK for Osamabama to increase deficit spending to record levels and bankrupt the treasury? You people are insane.

Recession is when your neighbor loses his job.
Depression is when you lose your job.
Recovery is when Obama loses his job.
  • re.By sweettea
Having been government school educated prior to Brown vs. Board of Education perhaps I can help.
A value added tax is a regressive tax on business that taxes a product on its increased value, (determined by the government), at every step between mining the materials, manufacturing, shipping, (The further it is shipped, the higher the value), warehousing, retail. And the government get its money without it having to be sold. What a deal for business!
The great thing about a value added tax system is that Obama gets to keep his promise to not raise taxes on the middle class.
Of course you will have to pay out the wazzoo for anything you buy but Obama is going to argue that we need to start saving our money.
And, America will end up having a permanent double figure unemployment rate that is found in most European countries which have been using the VAT for years.
  • Olympic Committee is Racist!
Since Obama and our First Lady went to pitch Chicago for the 2012 Olympics in the name of "the children," but lost the prize in the first round, it's obvious that the Olympic Committee hates children and is racist.

Now, Obama can come home to less important things like the economy, Afghanistan, our national debt, and raising taxes.

  • Dear Sweettea
A value added tax or VAT taxes a product at every stage of production. If you buy a piece of furniture, a little tax is paid by the guy who grew the tree, a little by the guy who cut down the tree, a little buy the guy who takes the tree to the sawmill, on and on, until you buy it and pay sales tax on it as well. Each little bit of tax paid by each person or company who handles the stuff that eventually becomes your dining room set gets added to the price you pay when you buy it. It's a massive hidden tax, unlike the Fair Tax which would be printed plainly on your receipt.
If they pass the VAT, they will try to make it illegal for retailers to show what percentage of the price is actually VAT.
  • @ sweettea
Someone else could probably explain this better, but I'll make a stab at it.

This is a hidden tax. You won't see it on the sales receipt. I believe they tax the business you bought something from.

For example, say you buy a shirt from the Gap. The Fed will require the Gap to pay them a percentage on the shirt, but all that will be recorded on the books...you'll never actually see it. All that you will see is the price tag on the shirt. Which will go up considerably.

It's a way to tax you without you supposedly knowing about it.
  • The VAT worked so well for the euros.
    1) The G20 is using a faulty static economic model, everything they do will be skewed.

    2) Revenue is drying up, time to jack taxes to grow the economy or something along those ignorant lines. The market isn’t pricing things as the dp thinks it should, so they will ‘fix’ that.

    3) How the &#%% is the government going to calm financial market fears while bleeding the private sector dry? Only spending restraint will calm financial market fears, but that’s not an option beyond lip service for these fools. What a nice lineup of clintonistas.

    4) Economic suicide sounds great to volcker, doesn’t it to you? He actually says “if” DC can’t get spending under control, funny guy.

    5) This is about what you’d expect from the lifelong apologists and defenders of socialism the soviet empire. They don’t call them tax and spend democrats for nothing.
  • @Truthseeker
For the love of all that is holy, PLEASE take an economics class or two.

Your ignorance on the subject is blinding.
  • VAT
Sorry, but I am government educated -- could someone explain how the VAT would work?
  • Read MY lips
    hahahahaha, republicans love taxes
  • What's he need the money for?
If we don't get health care , I see no reason to start raking in money if there is nothing to spend it on.

Unless the plan is to start paying down the debt. Was that a joke?
  • Taxes Will Rise. So What?
Yes, we'll need to raise taxes. Get used to it.

No, it won't wreck the economy. Think Bill Clinton. If GWB and the Republicans had just left tax rates alone, particularly when we started going into deficit spending, we wouldn't be in the economic mess we're in now.
  • Is it 2010 yet?
Except, I'm not so sure that the Republicans would do the right thing and have some of this garbage getting past repealed.

*sigh* One can only hope. At any rate, something HAS to slow down the Obama machine. So I guess I'll have to vote Republican across the board. One thing for certain...after this fine display I have been treated to over the last 9 months, I will never vote for a Democrat again.

And, at the risk of sounding racist, I will also never vote for another black President. I didn't vote for Obama, but he was supposed to be the great unifier or some other BS, wasn't he? I'm damn sick and tired of having the race card thrown out at me or anybody else that disagrees with a black person's political policies.
  • Can't
    I'm just waiting.....
...for one of these big-spending, big-government, big-tax, marxist/socialist democrats to say, “Well, let them eat cake!”

    Time to sharpen my pitchfork...
    By $mooth Operator

They'd have to charge you a fat tax for the cake.

  • taxes
The Blessed One, lie about taxes???
    I can't believe it!
  • Taxes
Instead of raising taxes. How about cut spending.
  • Speaking of "connect the dots"...
What group is John Podesta a member of? Well, he is on the board of the Apollo Alliance.

Who was the Apollo Alliance founded by? Jeff Jones

Who is Jeff Jones? Why he was the beloved co-founder of Weather Underground along with that guy who really wasn't that big of a deal during the campaign. You know his name..uhh..Bill Ayers.

So, what's the big deal, who cares about the Apollo Alliance? Maybe we all should... The Apollo Alliance is an influential left-wing environmentalist group that helped write the stimulus legislation. The $60 billion in funding which the legislation provides for “greeeeeeeeen jobs,” was inserted at the request of the Apollo Alliance. Even Harry Reid thanked them, by name, right after the Stimulus Bill was signed.

Wake up, people. We are not dealing with just the typical pandering Democrat in the WH who just watches the polls and wants to get reelected. We are dealing with hardcore ideologues, who hate the fundamental basis of the USA to the core, and who are on a mission to "fundamentally change America".

That is why we need to fight and rant every day. They are relentless.
