Public enemy number one of the moment is Cadillac insurance plans.  The Democrats are trying to focus on these ritzy plans in order to gain support of their plans to limit competition and make you dependent on the government for healthcare.  Obama's chief economic advisor Christina Romer says that the tax on Cadillac insurance plans is "probably the number one item that health economists across the ideological spectrum believe is likely to stem the explosion of health-care costs."

Did you hear that?  According to Obama's chief economist, the biggest savior to our healthcare system comes in the form of a tax.

Romer says, "It will discourage insurance companies from offering high-priced plans that would otherwise eat up larger and larger shares of workers' wages."  So now the government is in the business of dictating how employers set up their wages and benefits for workers.  If the government doesn't like the way your company has set up its benefits, tax them to death!  Eventually these plans will be eliminated and you will be forced to take on the government option, which will supposedly be cheaper (which it won't be).  Then you will magically increase the wages of your employees!  See how easy that was in liberal fairy land?

What others are saying

  • So many people know hypothetical Canadians?
Why is it that Canadian infant mortality rate is lower than the U.S? Why is life expenctancy higher than the U.S.? And why is it that the per capita cost of health care is 47% of what the U.S. cost is? Oh yeah, did I tell you that no legal Canadian resident is denied coverage for any pre-existing condition or for once being sick. No Canadian is denied treatment because he/she is out of work. No Canadian has ever lost a house or their life savings due to health care costs. And if a Canadian does come down to the States for treatment that he/she can't get the Canadian government (taxpayer) pays for it. This is something the talk show hosts convenioently forget to mention.

So once again I challenge you to speak to true Canadians, instead of inventing hypothetical Canadians that happen to spread the same message as American talk show hosts.

Why are there so many religious "bible thumping" so called God-fearing good Christian people here that don't want to do anything to make sure that fellow hard-working honest Americans can get access to affordable healthcare without having to choose between food or insurance, or without having to worry about having been sick once and not getting coverage. And if we can pay for public fire services, why can't we make sure everyone can afford good health care?
  • @ Jack Smythe re: Schools
Jack - Yes. I think it is 100% unfair theft for me to use the deadly force of government to take money from you in order to pay for public schools for my kids.

Also - if I'm irresponsible and have 10 kids without the ability to raise them properly, then how exactly does relying on the government to support me through taxing your money teach me to be a more responsible member of society?

In other words: Is there anything in the government budget you would cut? Not libraries, parks, beaches, bike trails, jogging paths, etc. Gotta have 'em all. If government didn't waste so much friggin' money on art depicting Christ in urine, bridges to nowhere, and a zillion failing social programs, then maybe I might trust them a little.
  • Cadillac or just costly?
I own a small business (3 employees) whose health insurance plan would be taxed as a so-called Cadillac plan. Why? Because we chose to add all kinds of luxury items to the plan? Not at all. As it happens, our group (3 families) has a history of significant medical issues, and our rates jumped over the years (75% in one year alone, and 40% in the year after), resulting in our having a plan that costs more than the insurance taxability cap, despite the fact that my coverage is not more extensive than most other plans. It's just significantly more expensive. And now Washington wants to tax my insurance premiums because they're already high? Sounds like a great plan to me.
  • Tax it ... TAX IT ALL !!!
Taxing Cadillac plans is only the tip.

The statists are looking at ways to tax your Flexible Spending Account (FSA), too.

And they justify taxing your FSA in order to pay for healthcare reform.

Yup! Government wants to take my money which I use responsibly to pay for my healthcare, and redistribute my money for ObamaCare.

I suspect they will try to tax any element of your healthcare (medical, flex account, dental, vision, etc.), then turn around and preach about how they are trying to improve your healthcare AT THE SAME TIME.
  • National tax for health care clinics?
If it's too much to ask the government to re open closed down hospitals, would it be too much to ask for clinics where sick people could go at least for minor problems?
If 23% would pay for everything, surely 1% would cover clinics. Even the wealthy could use them if they wanted to.
  • Back to the topic...
Someone explain to me why cadillac plans should be taxed?
  • Load Of Horse Squeeze
Jack, I work with Canadians that damn sure don't share your point of view. Furthermore, the number of people that don't have insurance, started at around 40+ million and now is down to 15 million. So what your saying is we should trash the entire system? instead of just fixing it?

    AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER!
  • @Jack
Hey for the most part I like your ideas... as sarcastic as they are. You are on the right track, buddy.

Here's a good quote for you "I swear to never live my life for the sake of another or ask someone else to live his life for the sake of mine."

I know you like to get all emotional and say let's just not care about anybody (sarcastically, I know) blah blah blah....but you still make no attempt to justify stealing from someone to give it to someone else.

And lastly, what mostly makes me sick about your kind is you are all high and "moral" when it comes to someone else's money. Never quite the same with your own, though.
  • Jack Shi... er ah Smythe
My grandfather is one of those Canadians you don't seem to think exist that came to America for healthcare. He had quadruple bypass surgery years ago and he is now a very healthy 84 year old. One of his good friends chose not to take his advise and come to America. He was not permitted to get his bypass surgery until it was too late. He was a decorated WWII vet that your wonderful Canadian system let down. Boy I just can't wait, sign me up!
  • Jack
It's so simple Jack, citizens for the most part vote directly for or against local taxes (property and sales) plus local reps can't hide and for the most part you know were they live. If a state rep does something boneheaded, I can hop in my car and go to my state capital in a couple of hours and get in his face. How many people can get an appointment with your Congressmen or Senator(unless your a lobbyist, not many) My point is local and state reps can be held closer in check than the feds. I am an American living in America, and I like my health care just the way it is, if I wanted Canadian health care I would move there.
  • Jack Smythe
You're a Canadian, that's why you don't understand. To us, it is a big deal whether something is state or Federal. Hell we fought a war over that!

US Constitution, power starts with the individual. The individual can grant power to the state or federal. Until we do, they have no power. And that is what libs don't get about how illegal this healthcare stuff is. We have NOT allowed the federal government to force us to buy anything.

And I have several friends in Canada who would refute your claim about how wonderful it is.
  • To booper
You don't seem to know what you are talking about. For me, taxes are taxes. I don't care if they are local (i.e. school), federal (i.e roads, parks), or state. If it comes out of my paycheck or
bank account, and goes to the government as a tax, it's a tax.

So to me, schooling, fire services, parks, are no more or no less important than health care services.

And I'm a Canadian living in the States. I am intimately familiar with both the Canadian "socialized" health care system and the American "private insurance based" health care system. My challenge to anyone who believes the talk show hosts about how awful the Canadian system is to go to Canada and ask real Canadians if they'd be willing to trade their system (and taxes) with what we have in America. You won't find many who'd trade their "so called awful" system with what that talk show hosts call the best healthcare system in the world. AMerican healthcare system is great, if you can afford it. If you can't the system fails misrably. Too many people can't afford it even though they work hard.
  • Jack Smythe
At a Federal level, that all sounds fine to me! I believe fire, police, etc. is state, county and local.
  • Jack
your mixing federal and local taxes your post in senseless.
  • AMAZING
Klubber - I can't tell if your serious or not.

Jack - You wrote all that and didn't say a damn thing.

Most people have argued this for so long that many of you have forgotten that there is middle ground. Most of you no longer want to see the facts, its just beat the other party. The political class in this country is sticking it up your collective a**es and your too raped up in the political BS to see it. Those of you that put Dems in charge are only hoping that it will work, your not even taking the time to do the math.

These politicans don't give a crap about you or people that don't have health care....it about what they can control. Two years after they pass the BS healthcare plan, we won't be able to find most of you, you'll be whining this isn't what we wanted.

Many of you need to grow up! Your welfare and health play no part in any of this!

    AND IT KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER!
(go for the childish politics and call me names, its the only argument you have)
  • Price Controls? Say What?
Haven't worked in the past -

Isn't one definition of insanity "repeating the same action over and over while expecting the outcome to be different"?
  • Quite Interesting
It is interesting to me that the government is so concerned about the amount of wages we lose on these Cadillac health plans, but not on Government Motors Cadillac vehicles. If I can waste my wages on their crappy high priced cars without an additional tax, why not allow me to get quality health insurance without an additional tax? Sounds to me like the way things are going, BOTH Cadillacs will be eliminated!!
  • The Ultimate Solution
    The Ultimate Solution

Many people want the government to provide no healthcare whatsoever, to anyone. No Medicare, no prescription drug plans, nothing. If you are rich you buy better insurance coverage and if you don't earn too much you get less. Every person is responsible for himself or herself. And if you have a pre-existing condition or was sick once, then "c'est la vie", you get no insurance. If you don't have lots of money, and develop a life-threatening illness, then funeral planning is not a bad thing.

Let's take this a step further. Let everyone pay for their own schooling. Eliminate all school taxes. If you have no kids, then you pay nothing. If you have 10 kids, then you foot the whole bill for all 10 kids to go to school. Or, some of the kids get no schooling whatsoever. If only 30% of the kids are educated it's no big deal. If you're wealthy, then all your children can get primary and secondary schooling.

While we're at it, let's eliminate free fire services. Why should taxpayer dollars be used to send a bunch of fire trucks and fire fighters out to your house or business to attempt to salvage as much of your property as possible. If a fire breaks out, you must first prove that you have insurance or money to pay for the cost of the trucks, equipment, and labor, else we'll just "let it burn".

And everytime you call the police, you gotta pay for it. Why should the police (i.e taxpayers) pay for the investigation of, say, a burglary, that only affects you and your property. You have insurance to cover your losses, don't you?

And let's introduce user fees to anyone that ever sets foot in a park or beach. No more free trips to a park, beach, bike trails, jogging paths, etc that is maintained by the taxpayers. Not everyone enjoys parks or beaches so why should everyone pay for it?

Ditto for libraries. Not everyone likes to read. Why does everyone pay for it.

Let's eliminate welfare, food stamps, and even unemployment insurance. Let's eliminate government run pensions. Let's stop taxing people for these services.

And let's get rid of all business requlations, except if safety is involved. Banks can do what they want. Businesses can sell goods and services in any manner they please. No more import, export regulations (unless safety or a threat is involved).

Let's go all the way. Freedom and liberty comes first, not taxes and government control. Now we're speaking your language. Maximum freedom, minimal government control - as close to Utopia as we can get.
  • Cadillac plans
These people are truly clueless. It makes no more sense to tax "Cadillac" plans than it does to tax a Cadillac more than a Chevy. The premiums go to support ALL of the insured just like the profits on a Cadillac help make the Chevy cheaper.
Where do these idiots come from? I suspect they don't really believe what they are putting forth and are just using class envy to gain government control of the whole system.
  • Conservatives love taxes
I dont get it. Why do conservatives love taxes?
  • Taxing Cadillac Plans
This is just more proof that this "reform" has absolutely nothing to do with healthcare. Nothing at all.
  • This one kills me
Generally, the employee has a choice of plans so if they want the higher priced one and the employer is subsidizing or in some cases paying 100% why is the government going to penalize a business for taking care of it's employees? Isn't that what they want is for business to take care of the workers? Some people have health issues that require so-called cadillac plans to cut down on the out of pocket expenses that would be a lot higher in their cases. So the government is going to "save" them by giving them a lower qualify plan for less money (yeah right) but their out of pocket expenses are going to skyrocket.

    Yeah, makes sense to me!
