What others are saying

  • Violate's What Law?
It certainly does not violate the Constitution. Read your Constitution; it says nothing about religious speech being prohibited on government property.

This case does have everything to do with free speech on public land. The fact that haters of religion want to turn it into an establishment clause case doesn't change the fact that any non-partisan reading of the First Amendment allows for these signs, which were created by the students and not the school, whether it is quoting Christian or Islamic scriptures.
  • oops....
I should have paid better attention. They are still in high school. I withdraw my previous statement about one of them being hot.
  • Adam
"Who cares if students quote the Islamic Scriptures?"

Judging by the reaction of most xians in society, most xians in society especially if such scriptures and such were used in the game as these xian ones were.

"I support freedom of speech even if it does happen to be on public property, which is a lot more than can be said about the hateful unbelievers here."

So it is now “hateful” to uphold the law?

You did not represent the situation accurately. This is not just an issue about freedom of speech on public land. This case has nothing to do with freedom of speech on public land.

These cheerleaders are using specifically xian scripture as part of a government football games.

    That violates the law.

"Drea I think it would be acceptable for muslims to have signs quoting their own religious text. The whole point of freedom of religion is inclusion, not exclusion. "

And I would tend to agree but again I would argue that this is simply not the time or place to put forth any religious proverb or religion. I think most people would simply want to enjoy the public venue they are at be it a game or a concert or what have you.

"The only way the Christian signs should be prohibited in my opinion would be if only Christian signs were allowed. Of course if no Muslims(or Hindus, or Buddhists or whomever) wanted to bring a sign to the game then they would not be represented, but that would be their choice."

Yes, but this is a bit different considering that the xian religious quotes and scriptures are being used on the game field.

Would xians and other be tolerant if the used quotes, proverbs and commandments from another faith? How about one that is in opposition to the xian or majority faith?

Since these religious quotes were used in the game, not in the bleachers or by the spectators, there is a huge difference.
  • Wow
Who cares if students quote the Islamic Scriptures? I support freedom of speech even if it does happen to be on public property, which is a lot more than can be said about the hateful unbelievers here.
  • Oh man....
The cheerleader on the right is hot. She's a college cheerleader so it's legal for me to say that.
  • Drea....

  • You guys are so funny!
I love it when people call Jesus "jeebus"! It sure exposes them darn xtians as the fools and pathetic myth believers that they are, doesn't it!

I bet if we can be condescending and contemptuous enough towards our fellow neighbors who are dumb enough to believe in "jeebus"(ha! It's funny every time you say it!) maybe those simple minded religious folks will just go away, huh?

Life would be so much better if eveyone understood that life and the universe are simple meaningless accidents.....don't you all agree?
  • mjsmith
"My suggestion for the girls is to keep the "inspirational" messages but remove the scripture location. That solves both problems."

No, that would just make them intellectually dishonest, intentionally deceptive and still in violation of the separation laws.

Again, let them quote the Koran but just leave out the scripture location.

Fine by you? I really think not.
  • Carlos
"These cheerleaders were expressing their personal beliefs in the sign they carried. The school simply allowed them the freedom to do so. "

That is not true. These “personal” signs were used by the team to rush through for field entry. I guess you missed that part of the video.

"Anyone offended by that is a potential book burner and should be denied any position of authority over others."

Wow. What a leap of logic there. On what basis do you compare a person not wanting every public outlet to be polluted by religion to be a potential book burner?

I mean other than your irrational thought and person hatred of those who oppose such public displays of religion?

I’m sure you wouldn’t be offended by a “personal” sign of a few muslim students that stated something inspirational to them like everyone eventually bowing down to Islam? If you did, that would make you a potential book burner and a hypocrite.

"There are some on this board in serious need of psychotherapy."

Or just a good lesson in what a personal freedom is and how to act in a polite society.
  • kinda like men and homophobia
I am not religious but it doesn't threaten me when other people are.

I figure as long as they have the right to show their belief, they can't complain when I show mine (as in-not).
  • religous signs @ football games
Well, as a Christian I am proud to see young kids wanting to display their religous messages to the football team and fans. It is unfortunate they are told they cannot display them any longer. I understand this is on taxpayer funded property and not private property. Most people cannot recite many verses in the Bible or any other scripture. My suggestion for the girls is to keep the "inspirational" messages but remove the scripture location. That solves both problems.
  • resnarkybird
Same reason you use Snarky instead of sarcastically critical or mocking and malicious. It makes some people just a little bit more curious.
  • Prudes and Censors
Go hand in hand. My daughter was a cheerleader. She was an athlete and showed much less skin than you typically see in the malls in Summer. Anyone with prurient interests in a child is a pervert but anyone who thinks that every middle aged male is a pervert is a seriously screwed up prude.

Additionally, These cheerleaders were expressing their personal beliefs in the sign they carried. The school simply allowed them the freedom to do so. Anyone offended by that is a potential book burner and should be denied any position of authority over others.
There are some on this board in serious need of psychotherapy.
  • reagm28b
seriously, wouldn't "hound dog" have been a much easier handle? why go with nomenclature?

sorry, you're right. I can be really ...ahem ...snarky sometimes.
  • Freedom
There is the freedom of speech, not a freedom from being offended. If we have to tolerate perversion, then a few can tolerate Christianity. Don't like it? Don't look at it. Same works for adult video stores.
  • The Mocking Bird
As you so succinctly chastised me on yesterday’s board:

right...so, is this where I call you out for name calling and just bloviating about how you hate without providing any substance?

ah, the loose standards of conservatism. "what is good for me is not good for you"

So today, if I replace the word conservatism with liberalism from your post, it defines to a T how you engage in name calling and hate without providing any substance. The title liberal hypocrite comes to mind in describing most of your posts.
  • db
i was just quoting St. Augustine. it was him complaining that women were the "cause of hideous and involuntary erections in holy men.”

i like see young women in skimpy outfits. oh YEAH!!!!!

    :o)
  • readam
I can't speak for anyone else but, I think my fear of jesus is rooted in a general fear of zombies.

maybe I watched too many movies as a kid.

sorry...you all are just too easy.

Look, I dont believe in god but, I think guys like Dawkins and others who are very ANTI religous miss the mark too.

I think they're simply responding to a perversion of faith that treats it as anything other than a method to achieve transcendence.

I think once you start thinking that there really was a guy who rose from the dead, or that the earth was created by a supernatural being you also just completely miss the entire purpose of religious belief - to transcend the physical world and achieve a higher view of nature as it operates.

    But, that's just me.

But, it's the reason I see these kids and their need to have "jesus banners" as retarded. It all harkens back to "we are great because our god is great".

religion is simply a means to get closer to transcending the binary world we live in - it's not a popularity contest or a student handbook.

and it for sure doesnt belong in a school funded by a myriad of tax payers who arent christians at all. this is why we have private schools. brainwashing take a lot of cash :-).
  • I would still be there.
    Jeffery
You mean you let a few Texas "sh*tkickers" decide your choice of residence? One thing though, Texans take there high school football way too serious.
  • Full of Hatred
You people are full of hatred. Why are you so scared of Jesus that you cannot even write his name correctly? I would be the last person to sit around and try to get you to change your religious beliefs, but it is pretty obvious that you people do not disagree with Christianity; you are scared that it might be true, so you have to mock it.
  • If you are going to allow the xian banner, then I’m sure no one would complain with banner from any other religions being displayed.

I’m sure no one quoting the constitution and/or about freedom of expression would mind religious quotes from the Necronomicon, Grand Grimoire, the Koran or any other religious tome at such public games.

After all, it is freedom of exercise and expression, right?

The simple fact it that in a polite society, there is a time and place for everything.

What the more overtly religious in our society need to learn is that not every event or occasion is the place for your religion even if the majority are the same religious belief as you.

As far as liberals and mob rule goes, xians do their fare share of resorting to mob rule.

I have heard far too often how this is a xian nation if by nothing else than the fact that most are claimed to be xian.

Well then, with this in mind, no such a person should complain when the majority is no longer xian.

Doesn’t the xian Bible even state treat others as you wish to be treated?
  • Football, cheerleaders, God, and prayer
    1. What is it with the "football culture" of prayer? Do these people think god really cares about the outcome of a football game?

    2. Why are there cheerleaders? Why do schools parade girls around in skimpy slut uniforms? If cheerleading must exist, do away with the mini-skirts.

    3. I'm going to make a stereotype: people who get all upset about removing religious symbols from the public sphere tend to be mouth-breathing uneducated trailer trash with double digit IQs, who take showers only once a week before they head off to the revival tent.
  • Freedom of ???
The problem with areas with a predominant religious belief is that those who don't share that belief live in constant fear of being judged and ridiculed by their own neighbors. Neighbors who very likley think EVERYONE in the community shares thier beliefs. So long as schools are run by the government, they must remain neutral and not appear as if they endorse any particular belief. By allowing an activity, regardless of what it is, is in fact endorsing that activity.

When I lived in Texas I could not openly share my beliefs because, when people realized that I Pagan, I was judged to be immoral. The attitude that was portrayed toward to me is the primary reason I left Texas; it is unfortunate because I share most other common traits and beliefs with Texans and if it wasn't for thier willingness to prejudge someone simply due to a religious difference, I would still be there.
  • Congress shall pass no law ...
Does that mean the souper-in-tendent of schools can tell the cheerleaders that they can't use their banners - or does it mean that the souper-in-tendent of schools cannot tell the cheerleaders that they can use their banners? I's confuzzled.

If I remember correctly, some version of "Do unto others ..." appears in common law as well as in every major religion.

hey Butt, pass the jug, mebbe that'll help clarify the issue.
  • And people can't figure out why christianity has such problems
Your right, Christians should use the islamic example of using 12-15 girls for wives for 50 year old, smelly goat herders and cab drivers
  • You Christian Bashers Make Me Laugh
How is wearing cheerleader outfits "dressing up like whores"? You see the outfits in the clip. They're typical cheerleader outfits and not like those in The Replacements at all. And something tells me that if the cheerleaders held up signs that said "YES WE CAN" or some other Obama quote and a conservative got offended, that 1 person would be told to go pound sand. So the lesson here is that majority rules just as long as that majority is liberal.
  • Amazed
I am struck at the attitudes some of you have (tshirt-doctor, Eva's Mama, snarkybird, etc). The majority of people in the community are Christians. I am sorry it hurts you. You condemn these girls and school for their righteousness and enjoy your freedom to comment on your sexual urges when looking at the appearance of the girls (i.e. blonde cuties comments).

I am sure you believe your sexual urges are more important and worthy to be aired out in public than their joy of Christian living. I also sure you will accuse the girls of sexual misconduct to justify yourselves.
  • If it's a private Christian school, fine. If it's a government school, ditch the religious messages. Simple.
  • hypocrites
The holy rollers dress fifteen year old girls up like common hookers to parade them around dancing in front of middle age men, but they want to carry jesus signs while they do it? And people can't figure out why christianity has such problems.
  • fundamentals of our Constitution!
Our highschool was able to win football games without religious symbols (except Celtic one's)and I don't really think "Jeebus" signs belong at the games, the Constitution does not say there should be a separation of Church and State which is unfortunately being taught at MSNBC and "gubmint" schools
  • religious sign and intollerance
We allow one person to determine what a community can and cannot do.
  • blonde cuties
i would remind them of the problems they're giving me.

“Women should not be enlightened or educated in any way. They should, in fact, be segregated as they are the cause of hideous and involuntary erections in holy men.”

    Saint Augustine

    :O)
  • Good.
I'm glad to see that someone decided to enforce the law on these pom-pom carrying twits. Obviously their gubmint school is not doing an adequate job teaching the fundamentals of our Constitution!
  • school board response
So if you can't allow a banner that might offend someone, that means that if I were to put up something that says "go Yankees", and you are a Phillies fan and are offended, do I have to take it down?
  • I thought it was majority rule
Don't liberals like to say it's majority rule? Well, it sounds like the majority are OK with the signs. Maybe the minority would be happier somewhere they don't have to see these "dirty" signs.
  • Never would have thought that
Snarkybird was so unpredictable! A liberal who ridicules southerners, christians, and jesus. Well Christ, snarky got any more curve balls to throw out there?
  • Get Over It
Move the sign and get over it kids. School is for school, not representing your favorite 2,000 year old jewish cabinet maker's ghost.
  • Look Ma! No Backbone!
It is pathetic that our society has empowered minority opinion to the point that a single person can control the behavior of an entire school.

Isn't it interesting that 'standing' is so important when considering whether the President is a natural born citizen, but irrelevant in politically correct matters such as this.

I urge all parents and friends of these students to bring the biggest most scripture laden banners and display them as is their constitutional right.

Why do we disregard the "free exercise thereof" language of the first amendment?
  • It's only religion when...
    ...it involves Christianity.
Other religions get a pass because it's just a 'cultural thing' and should be left alone in the name of diversity.

And somehow, Christianity has been labeled a 'white' thing, and is therefore treated the way white people are: like the cause of all the world's troubles.
    This is getting absurd.
  • c'mon!
why would the superintendent deny these kids their need to proffer the good grace of jeebus to help them win against their evil, evil opponents?

they need jeebus on their side! and everyone knows he likes banners.

perhaps in their new "god zone" they could sacrifice a virgin to help persuade a win from god's will.

oh wait, this is a GA high school... well, they could have a virgin shipped in from somewhere.
