FUN WITH NUMBERS!

Knowing that the nation's schools are doing so poorly teaching basic math skills to our children; and assuming that parents, being the ultra-responsible lot that you are, will try to fill in the gaps with some home schooling --- I thought it might be useful to present you with some numbers you might want to use in your remedial education efforts. The added bonus here is that you can also use these numbers to reinforce in your children that President Barack Obama really is, as has been written, "sort of" a God and is clearly succeeding in his quest to lead America to a golden new economic age.

30,383 That's the number of jobs the Obama Administration claimed to have "saved or created" in a statement last Thursday. The trouble is, there is no clearly defined way to determine jobs "saved or created." You can pretty much choose any number and run with it. The New York Post tells us that the tab comes out to $71,500 per saved-or-created job. Ask you child what they think might happen if small businesses had this money through tax cuts to use to expand and grow their businesses.

48,000,000 Since we're speaking of jobs, that's the approximate number of people employed by America's small businesses - specifically the ones that employ between 1 and 49 people. Medium-sized businesses employing 50 to 499 workers count for another 42,000,000 jobs. What about large businesses that employ over 500 people? Try 17,000,000. Surprising, isn't it? Now while you're working through these numbers with your kids be sure to tell them that the vast majority of these small and medium-sized businesses report their business income on their owner's personal tax return. These business owners, then, will be the ones hit when Barack Obama gets his tax increases on people earning over $250,000 a year. They employ most of our workers, and they're going to take the tax hit. Ask your child how they think this is going to work out! If you work for one of these small businesses you may want to give that some thought yourself.

$2,300,000 That's the amount of borrowed stimulus money that was sent to beauty schools in the Tampa, Florida area to train hairdressers, masseuses and nail technicians. People who are already licensed to do hair, nails and give massages in the Tampa area are looking for work. There will be no jobs waiting for the students who use this money to get their "beauty" licenses. The Florida Cosmetology Association says only 1% to 2% of beauty school grads will be working in that field five years after graduation. Use these numbers to try to convince your child that there are better things for them to train for than cutting hair, polishing nails and giving massages in Tampa.

61.4% Percentages are fun! It's bonus time when you can use percentages to teach your children about the perils of debt. At the end of 1999, as we were moving into the last year of the Clinton Administration, the amount of money our government owed was 61.4% of our GDP; the total value of all goods and services produced in this country during that year. By the time George Bush was through that figure had gone up by 8.8 percentage points to 70.2%. Not good. But ... by the time Barack Obama gets his first year all wrapped up that figure will have risen another 20.2 percentage points to 90.4%! We're on a roll! And here's your final fun percentage figure: In 2011 that figure will reach the magic 100%. At that point we owe more than the total value of our economy. That has to be the definition of something! Bankruptcy? Oh ... and we're not even talking unfunded liabilities here.

Finally ...

9% That's an unemployment figure. That's how high Barack Obama said our unemployment figure would go if we did not quickly pass his super-effective stimulus plan earlier this year.

7.9% That's how high Obama said unemployment would rise if we would just give him over $750 billion dollars to stimulate our economy. We did; and ....

9.8% That's our latest unemployment figure. Looks like the stimulus worked! The figure includes hairdressers, nail techs and massage therapists - in case you're wondering.

#1 As in Rule No. 1. Elections have consequences.

Capitalism was not flatlining in the slightest. People, thanks to worthless progressive thinking, tend to be under the misconception that capitalism is a system where no businesses ever fail, and everybody has the American Dream.

No, Capitalism is all about rewarding those that work hard and use their heads. Those that don't-- the will fail. Failure is a part of capitalism just as failure is a part of the path to success.

The politicians like to scream crisis and bloody murder the sky is falling to scare the masses into letting them do anything...but the fact is "too big to fail" is a ridiculous notion.

In true capitalism, those businesses would go under, making way for better run, more efficient business to grow. Yes, people lose jobs, but they get new and better ones eventually--if they are worth their salt, that is.
  • Forgetful crybabies
The banks were bailed out, capitalism was flat lining. The bail out was taken for granted as the bankers kept their jobs and expected to keep on taking home their regular paycheck as many of us no longer did.
The common person is expected to take a pay cut but not the banker.

All you cry babies can remember is the stimulus bill that Obama tried to help US with after we first helped the BANKS AND WALL STREET.

Us peasants aren't going to keep wiping your butts forever, just keep that in mind.

You're right about Fantana/Dolan/s_!t for brains. I have taught in both public and Catholic schools. The private school environment is much better for our kids. And I know of more public school teachers than priests who have been intimately involved with students. It's surprising that BF would have a problem with that anyway, because he's so far left he HAS to be a NAMBLA advocate. How that guy ever made it to his current age of 12 with his mindset is beyond me.

Don't get worked up over Brian Fontanna, Tom. This is typical for him and his kind. Anything to disparage Christians, Jews, conservatives. Bet he's a tolerant, open-minded liberal AKA socialist. Socialism, Marxism, all the "...isms" cannot exist where Chirstian values dominate. Obviously ole Brian is not aware of the huge role the Catholic church played in acculturating Irish immigrants in the late 1800's - getting them off the streets and into schools and job training programs, educating women in child care and basic hygiene. We owe a huge debt to them, but why let history "muddle up" facts, right Brian. For all of you readers keeping up w/the numbers. In the great state of NC, the news reported an 11% unemployment rate. Thank you, Kay Hagen. While prezbo is considering bailing out newspapers, there was never a bailout for tobacco or textile mills - the staples of this state. • Forrest
That is one post I can agree with 100%!!!

    Can't we find a Ben & Jerry's.....

Speaking of healthcare, someone explain to me why it is so evil for a business person to want to treat his loyal employees well, to attract and keep loyal employees by providing them top of the line health care and then the government wants to hit them with a 40% cadillac tax? Punish business for trying to treat their workers right.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
  • Smythe & Jenny
That's not up to you buddy! You charge these people more money, they either cut employees or charge customers more. So someone else is going to get hurt, up to the point you run him out of business all together.

Jenny, have you not also seen the reports how this is all unsustainable. The Dow is an "indicator" not an absolute. And as an indicator it is only viable to look at it in long periods. Will it stay at 10,000 in other words. Or is this yet another artificially propped up run? If it stays there after the 2010 elections, THEN we will have done something.
  • Small business owners' income
When you talk about so many small business owners being in the group of income earners over $250,000 and how the businesses will be hurt by tax increases, I think you fail to close the loop for those who do not understand the accounting for owner's equity. I wish you would explain further that just because the net income of the business is over $250,000 does not mean that the business owner extracts that much cash from the business each year as their personal salary (such as in the comment by Jack Smythe). Most of them extract a heck of a lot less cash than that and live a lifestyle of a much lower income person. Maybe they extract $50-$60 thousand and they plow the rest of the income dollars right back into the business as capital to keep the business going. Therefore, as you usually go on to explain, the business owner is unable to expand to the same extent as compared to what could happen if taxes were not increased. Taxing the net income at a higher rate reduces the reinvestment in the business (because the cash extracting is likely to remain about the same), thus reducing the future prospects for that business to expand and hire more employees, because it has less capital.
  • Brian Fontana
Your comment about Catholic schools just shows your bias and cowardice. Yes it is true that a few catholic priests violated a sacred trust (and some young boys), but you have the guts to use that to make a sweeping generalzation about the lot of them. I dare you to apply that same logic and make a sweeping generalization about any group other than conservatives or Christians. I'll get you started, I personally know for a fact that a certain black guy is a convicted thief. Would you say all blacks are thieves? How about I know a lazy mexican, are all mexicans lazy? If these statements are not ok (they aren't) why do you think it's ok to say all priests are child molesters? You are an F'ing coward and a petty human being.
  • Elections do have consequences
...and McCain would have done basically the exact same thing. McCain and Obama had basically the same domestic economic policies - heck, even McCain openly admitted that he wanted to tax healthcare benefits that are currently tax-free. Why? To give healthcare to other people. This is called 'redistribution of wealth' ...right?

Yes, elections have consequences, but we were screwed either way. Let's not kid ourselves thinking that McCain was any more awesome than Obama... Dems and Republicans are both the same flavor… Vanilla. The only difference is that one is Borden (R) and the other is Breyer’s (D). We need to get a whole new flavor interjected into the political scene if anything positive and productive is to be done.
  • So
So I guess the general question to ask now is " Are you better off now than you were January 19, 2009? Love to see that number/statistic.
  • Dear Mr. Smythe...
I was wondering who was appointed to determine what a "fair" salary is and I'm glad to see it was you. Apparently, whoever makes more than you (whetever that number happens to be) makes "too much" and should pay more in taxes. At least we know how it works now.

News flash: small business owners are people who risked their life savings (usually multiple times) to get a business off the ground. They work ridiculous hours at the expense of their families. And they hire employees who don't have the guts to start their own businesses. I speak from experience. That is, I work for a small business owner and would not do what the owner did and still does to keep it afloat. He can make whatever he can as far as I'm concerned. By employing me he has allowed me to earn a very comfortable living while spending a lot of time with my family.

Now, if he gets squeezed for even more taxes, do you think he'll tell his family they have to do with less, or do you think his employees will suffer instead? Your beloved tax increases will hurt "working" families, not the business owners. Genius.

  • I'll give you another number
10,103 - The value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 10:40 AM EDT today

8279 - The value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average on January 20, 2009

If America were really on the verge of economic collapse and if the end of capitalism were imminent, why are so many companies announcing earnings this quarter well above expectations?
  • Dr's are small business
A lot of those employers that fall into the small business category are doctors and dentist offices. A single practitioner will usually employee about 7-12 people (including themselves). A multi-doctor practice, depending on the number of docs, will usually have around 25 employees. So, not only are docs going to get hit with Obamacare, a lot of them also fall into the category that report their practice income as personal income.
  • Big Joe Williams
no i wasn't serious. nope. no way. i'm schizophrenic, if my doctors are correct. so, i been be held for anything i say. nope. no way. :O)
  • America is TOAST.
Our country is heading straight down the toilet and nobody's gonna stop it. Because all I hear is a bunch of Americans who want to sit around on their butts and WAIT until next November to try and vote-away the problem. Wait 12 months while this administration and Congress destroys everything in their path. Hell, they ain't gonna need 12 months. And just what kind of fool thinks the Republicans are gonna win elections next year and actually do the right(pro-American) thing? Have you people forgotten that it is the REPUBLICANS who are the reason the DEMOCRATS are now in complete control of our government. The Republicans have had many chances and years to do the right thing and they blew it every time. But, what the democrats are doing is unexcusable and un-American. Downright traitorous. So, I guess that's it, folks. There's no stopping this socialist train. If our only solution is to sit around and wait until next November to hopefully get the impotent Republicans to win some elections and turn this thing around, well, then we've already lost. Aren't you people embarrassed to call yourselves "democrats" and "republicans" and "libertarians"? Why do you give your blind allegiance to a political party?

The only "hope" we have for "change" is if our military puts that guy in the White House on trial and demands to see his original birth certificate. A Commander in Chief must be an American citizen. Why has obama paid his lawyers over $1 Million dollars to hide his birth certificate? Why would a defendent pay his attorneys lots of money to hide evidence from the judge? That's what obama is doing and there's a reason behind it. Obama's own mother, aunt, and grandmother all said he was born in Kenya. How the hell could any of you argue with that? Does your own mother not know where YOU were born?
  • Anyone see Obama in here?
OK ... it may just be me ... but this Dilbert cartoon seems like Obama through and through. The economy is improving (as predicted by economists) in spite of Obama's failed ... aghm ... stimulus ... and all the jobs he's "created or saved" .... but he'll still take credit for improving something he doesn't understand let alone have the intelligence to affect.

    http://dilbert.com/fast/2009-10-21/
  • Small businesses have tax deductions
You fail to mention in your arguements that small business owners can deduct the cost of their employees, rent, inventory, utilities, expansion, and any other cost associated with running their business. If after all these deductions, the owner still has $225K or more left over as "salary" or profit, then yes maybe he/she SHOULD pay more taxes.
  • Unemployment
Those unemployment numbers are w-a-a-y low. they don't take into account all of the people who are no longer collecting unemployment compensation. There are a lot of folks out there who have been unemployed a long time, and it's not getting any better. I think T-Shirt Doc is more accurate with 15%.
  • Trolls
Brian Fontana is just Jimmy Dolan, ignore him.
  • Tshirt-Doctor, where are you?
Yesterday, did you really say "they(commies) defeated us in World War 2"? Did you really say "I like to quote our hero Benito Mussolini"? Did you really say "I'm glad your on our side"? Yesterday, I was just doing my best Sam Kinison impression for Jenny, but, were you serious?
  • unemployment figure
the statists have redone the unemployment figures to make it good for themselves. it's actually about 15%
  • Brian Fantana, did you go to Catholic School, or are just another knee jerk bigot? I went to Catholic schools in the 60's and the NUNs provided a superior education to a class of 45. A public school teacher would whine to high heavens with a class that size. Due to geographics, I had to xfer to public school my senior year. Public school was a joke. I had more than enough credits to graduate when I enrolled. If you're so concerned about pedophilia, I'm sure you're very upset with Obama's "safe schools" czar.
  • % of GDP
Neal's numbers sound off to me when he's talking about debt to GDP ratio. I'm a libertarian and realize that our debt completely out of control, but 70-80% of GDP..I don't think that's right. Can someone verify these numbers please.
  • Debt
Having debt equal to or greater than our annual GDP is not bankruptcy. I owe more on my house than I earn in a given year....that doesn't mean I'm bankrupt. Bankruptcy is not having the cash to cover your expenses.....the whole of U.S. debt is not due in any one year. That being said, this still scares the *bleep* out of me......can anyone say "hyperinflation?"
  • Two More Numbers
11 and 0. The former is the number of posts Brian Fantana has made since yesterday referring to conservatives as rednecks and/or crybabies. The latter is the number of relevant posts he has made since visiting this site.
  • Look we know that the Statists are masters at Incrementalism so that each change is gradual and you Leftists are able to somehow justify them to yourselves.
But at some point you people are going to have to ask yourselves how much is too much?

The Statists are going after free speech in the form of attacking the press.

They've nationalized some industries and are attempting to nationalize more and exert control over others – just like Socialists and Fascists have done in the past.

They've wanted people to inform on others – just like they do in police states.

The want to seize more and more property in the form of taxation from the achievers.

And they want to cling to power by handing out plunder to the dumbmasses.

They want to destroy the economy by overburdening it with massive new entitlement programs.

We don't know what else they have in mind, but most assuredly they don't like the fact that law-abiding citizens can defend themselves, and who knows what new taxes they would like to impose.

So you Leftists have to ask yourselves, How much is Too much?

How far do you want to support the Democrats taking this country into a Third world Statist h*ll hole?

You have to know you are enabling the Statists, if they succeed in destroying this nation, part of the responsibility for that Will Be On YOUR SHOULDERS!!!!!!!

So you had better look deep into your soul and ask yourself if you want to be partially responsible for this disaster.

    How much is Too Much???
  • New math
Neal - check your math on the 30,383 jobs. Govt. claims $16 billion spent. That works out to $533,000 per job!
  • GDP
That's especially disturbing. What happens when we get to 100%???? I can't even fathom that one.
  • Government schools?
Say what you want about them, they have to be better than catholic schools where the priests obviously spend too much time with the students
  • Consequences is right
Another number is that 1.42 trillion you mentioned yesterday. It doesn't mean much to me after my own contemplation, but I have enjoyed reading and seeing explanations like this: http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html and this: http://www.tysknews.com/Depts/Taxes/million.htm and this: http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/Numbers/Math/Mathematical_Thinking/how_big_is_a_trillion.htm

1.42 trillion dollars would buy how many packs of ramen noodles? What would they look like dry and stacked? What would they look like cooked and served in a giant bowl? How long would 1.42 trillion dollars worth of ramen noodles be all stretched out in a straight line? Oops, not so fun anymore. More like useless. Kinda like the average politician.
