What others are saying

  • Franken Medical Bankruptcies
He is right its awfully hard to go bankrupt if you die waiting for said government care.
  • Stacking the deck...
What can it possibly mean to ask "how many bankruptcies result from a non-existent debt?"

Of course, that's Al's point. But the question is loaded. Sure there are zero br's for medical costs.... because no one pays medical costs. The real, followup question is, then, "who does pay?"

Then they find out that they are paying for these services, and in a way that they cannot possibly claim as the reason for a bankruptcy.

The question should have been "how many bankruptcies period? And of those, how many are contributed to by the fact that the debtor was paying over half their income to the government in taxes?"

The "medical bankruptcy" is still there, but the money has been laundered, so to speak, to destroy any audit trail.
  • Stuart Smalley goes to Washington
    What a pompous ass!
  • France...Germany...Really????
My ancestors risked everything and immigrated to the US to escape the F'd up European systems that crushed freedom and liberty for centuries. Anybody who stands in front of me and makes an argument that we should be like France or Germany will be physically incapable of speaking in short order. The founding principles in our constitution were conceived by people so thoroughly pissed at the European concept of government that they left towns and cities their families had been living in for GENERATIONS - for nothing but the hope that they could pursue the destiny of their CHOICE here in this great country. There were no guarantees or government bailouts to insure their success. We have become a nation of pussies (not the kind that "meow"), and Franken is one of the biggest around.
  • chris
Conservatives compare survival rates of easily treated (thanks to medical research/pharm here in the grand ol' USofA) cancers in America vs. the survival of the same cancers in country's with national healthcare.

Such as breast CA here vs. breast CA in the UK or prostate CA survival here vs. prostate survival in France. It ain't cherry picking. Stop reading the NYTimes and do some research for yourself. (I ain't gonna do it for you on this one.)

If I get cancer (or if any of these senators/representatives get cancer), the treatment will be in the US not somewhere else. Did Kennedy go to Cuba to get his brain CA treatment?
  • Continued...
Bottom line; I love freedom. I have SERIOUS issues with ANYONE who would try to control my liberty. I also do not believe that the Conservative movement alone has the right attitude or all the answers when it comes to personal freedom and liberty. I am calling it as I see it. I cannot understand how all these so called freedom loving Conservatives can't see it.
  • @Club-a-Liberal and paganposts and Jeff
For starters Club a Liberal, I am not a Liberal, I am a Libertarian. Which is to say that I am socially liberal and fiscally conservative. I have about as much love for Liberals as I have for anal herpes. So do not assume that because I take issue with some conservative policies that I want to see Obama get re-elected. Ok? Second, my point is this; Conservatism has its detractors. I, for the life of me cannot understand why Conservatives feel the need to control what people do with their bodies. You missed the part where Conservatives are trying to install a religious government? Really? Tell that to the person who tries to buy alcohol on Sunday in Georgia, you dolt. Abortion? Who's body is it? If it isn't their body, then why do Conservatives try to control it? I really don't care how offended you are by abortion, it has nothing to do with the fact that it is ludicrous to think that it is acceptable for any government entity to force a woman to have a baby that she doesn't want. You say it isn't about controlling a woman's reproduction, it's about protecting life. Well, the last time I drove past the local abortion clinic I failed to see the line of people waiting to adopt the soon to be aborted fetuses, so that argument does not fly. Homosexuality? Why do conservatives care if two people want to get married? Who cares if those two people are of the same sex. Is it anyone's business but their own? I never said anything about legislating acceptance, that would be impossible, but trying to legislate how consenting adults interact with each other? Why? What logical purpose does that serve? Does legislating "morality" promote the cause of individual liberty? I think not. The war on drugs? A Conservative started that one, and Conservatives have continued to promote this abysmal failure consistently. Why? Does incarcerating a non-violent drug user promote individual liberty? Outlaw pot, but drink up! (Unless it's Sunday in Georgia) Yeah, that's freedom. As far as censorship is concerned, I am fully aware of the P.M.R.C. and the fact that Tipper Gore is a twat waffle. We get censorship from all sides including Conservatives. We had a case here in Georgia, (Gwinnett county, I think) where a woman was trying to get the Harry Potter books banned from school library's. Her reason? The Harry Potter books promoted the occult and witchcraft which, in her mind was against God, and if she thinks it's against God then nobody should be able to read Harry Potter. Yes she is a kook, and yes she is easy to write off, but the fact remains that this religious Conservative attitude permeates the Conservative movement. Remember Ralph Reed and his coalition?
  • @ Slut Puppy

I disagree...we could control the mexico border...we just dont. we could run all the illegals out...we just dont. we could stop allowing legal immigration...we just dont. we could stop this anchor baby nonsense...we just dont. pretty soon this country will resemble mexico...maybe then they will start returning home....probably not.
  • Franken medical bankruptcies
In Europe for the most part bankruptcy is not allowed. In Germany overindebted people get no relief although there are some who do manage to complet a restructuring of personal debt. So when Al says zero bankruptcies he is right they can't declare bankruptcy.
  • rebooger
    whoops!

nondelegation doctrine is what I meant.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondelegation_doctrine

""However, delegation of some authority is exercised as an implied power of Congress, and has been ruled constitutional by the Supreme Court, as long as Congress provides an "intelligible principle" to guide the executive branch. "'In determining what Congress may do in seeking assistance from another branch, the extent and character of that assistance must be fixed according to common sense and the inherent necessities of the government co-ordination.' So long as Congress 'shall lay down by legislative act an intelligible principle to which the person or body authorized to [exercise the delegated authority] is directed to conform, such legislative action is not a forbidden delegation of legislative power.'"[2]""

    not "delegation clause"...sorry, my mistake.

and the cabinet thing was article 2.

That will teach me to do three things at once.

but, go on - snipe away. I deserve it for getting those botched up. probably did it again.. been a heckuva day at work.
  • rebooger
You said "Executive branch that enacts laws (called regulations) that carry fines and jail times just like any laws passed by Congress"

I believe this is part of the delegation clause. It's why cabinet appointees are vetted by congress and why the Fed has the power it does.

Could be wrong there but pretty sure... I know if I am wrong, someone will point it out. :-)
  • yes, but...
How many illigals do they have? And, how many Plaintiff's lawyers to they have?
  • rejeff
You said "I would much rather have some of the people go bankrupt than the whole country go bankrupt."

Me too. and somewhere in there is a compromise to help make this better for some.
  • rejeff
umm..well, correct me here but mexico provides the largest number of illegal immigrants to our country.

I'm pretty sure Switzerland doesn't have a 2000 mile border with a very poor country.

so, yes partly it's economic in that mexico's economy is so much poorer than ours, we draw immigrants here from there. But, a lot of that is proximity and ease of getting here - walking, by car. They dont have to get on a plane or a boat.

there aint no way we're gonna "control" a 2000 mile border. sorry, aint happening
  • Hi!
"So Franken thinks our success in treating cancers is means these cancers are easily treatable and therefore should not be considered as an argument? Tell that to all those survivors out there, like me. What an IMMENSE insult."

No, he's saying republican/libertarians like to compare the survival rates of easily treated cancers in the us (prostate ect) to survival rates of deadly cancers in foreign countries (brain, pancreatic)
If you don't understand what's wrong with doing that when the survival rates are equally bad here, then you aren't capable of having an intelligent debate with.

"How much of the bankruptcy data did Frankensenator cherry pick? Switzerland? How many people live there? Please"

How about Germany and france and switzerland 155 millon 0% bankrupcies caused by medical care costs. I wonder why we can't do that here?
  • Selective
Unmentioned by Franken: most countries have *far* less generous bankruptcy provisions than the US does.
  • Snarky
I can see your point about wanting to take care of everyone but at what cost? we have to realize that bad things happen and no amount of planning and preparation can cover everything. trying to do so is lunacy. I would much rather have some of the people go bankrupt than the whole country go bankrupt. what kind of healthcare do you think we would have then?
  • and we have two other branches to keep that in check
Your absolutely right in theory, but in reality, our Judicial system has a habit of legislating from the bench, and an Executive branch that enacts laws (called regulations) that carry fines and jail times just like any laws passed by Congress, and these regulations are written by low-mid level bureaucrats that are not elected just promoted.
  • Snarky
Please explain why our immigration problems are a function of geography and not border control.
  • BN, he's doin' her?
I though he was just her douchebag.
  • Immigrants
We'd probably not have any health care crisis if we treated illegals the way Canadians, French, Everywhere in Scandinavia, etc. They don't put up and pay for folks that cross their borders like we do in the U.S.

Perhaps that's what the focus should turn to.

A friend of mine immigrated here from Spain after marrying an American. He's got 3 years to become a citizen and vote. He's following all the rules. But he'll still sit in line behind a bunch of illegals without insurance at the emergency room whom aren't taking steps to become "legal." Let alone, insured.
  • mattisben

out of top 10 by revenue, 6 aren't american.

jeff - (on numbers) my bad thank you for catching that. although, I dont think it's fair to compare immigration issues as ours are more a function of geography. They do have higher taxes too, quite right. But also higher services. Which, I think, is ultimately the trade off you make.

mattisben - no, sorry. We didnt make this "thing" to solve all our problems. We collectively are represented within a constitutional republic by elected representatives and senators and, through that representation, enact changes to law or new laws to help solve problems we face. It aint perfect but, I'll take it over anything else I see out there.

And I agree, you can't make a perfect world. can't fix everything. never said that. but, the perfect shouldnt be the enemy of the good. and we've created this system to allow us to get our views heard and enact changes we want.

and we have two other branches to keep that in check.
  • America only nation yadayadayada
America also used to be the nation everyone looked up to, the nation that they all knew would help in a natural catastrophe, the nation others modeled themselves after, the nation that people wanted to immigrate to. So why is it that we think it's a good idea to be like the ones who don't do all the above?

You plan the best you can, if too much happens you get help where you can, church, charities, whatever. Friends, family. I really don't see where the public at large should be responsible. It will destroy us and we will no longer be the country all look up to for help because we won't be able to. We're going to collapse the system to the point where we will ALL go bankrupt. Then who's going to pay the taxes to help us out? Snarky? HA!

  • @Slut
Nice try, but you are clearly uninformed on the facts.

    For starters:

"If a conservative doesn't like certain types of music or literature, he forms a group to censor it."

Ahh, no.... it was your beloved Tipper Gore who led that movement. You know her, she is the phony wife of that wooden pole who remains in the closet, Al Gore.

"If a conservative is a homosexual, he must hide his identity lest he shunned by his peers."

No, he just doesn't feel the need to where his sexuality and broadcast what he does in the bedroom like you insecure liberals.

"If a conservative thinks he knows what is best for a womans reproduction, he will fight for laws to control it."

I don't know of any conservative who fights against women's reproduction. On the other hand, I do know of conservatives who fight against allowing someone to have the "right" to have a baby's skulled crushed into pieces and then have their brains sucked out with a vacuum. But those are just crazy people who think that is wrong.

"If a conservative is a believer, he wants to enact laws to make everyone abide by his beliefs."

Huh??? I must have missed where these Conservatives were trying to overthrow the constitution to install a religious govt. Which group is trying to enact laws (actually trying to use the courts) to make people abide by their "religion", you dolt?
  • @ Snarky
Better look over your Swiss numbers again. Swiss GDP was $360 Billion (IMF, OECD numbers for 2008). Swiss GDP per Capita in 2008 was $43,195 vs. $46,300 (US) Not $63. They have a requirement for MANDATORY HEALTH INSURANCE. You MUST buy at a minimum a catastrophic policy. THIS POLICY IS FROM A PRIVATE INSURER (not through the gvmt .like Medicare), with subsidies for those at poverty. You may buy upgrades in your policy based upon your needs/wants .
Singapore has a mandatory insurance requirement (private) that heavily depends upon HSA's. Since you have to spend your money 1st you are more careful how it is spent. The rate of medical inflation is significantly lower since you are watching your HSA since it rolls over to the next year… Once again there is a minimum required coverage that you can add to base hospitalization is a ward of 6 beds, you want a private room you pay more. You decide what you want, and pay accordingly after the base.
Neither of these is what the Harry & Nancy show want.
  • Franken is Right!
The point of Franken's comments is that we're the only industrialized country where a family can get wiped out financially due to medical cost.

It doesn't matter if you've played by the rules your whole life. It doesn't matter whether you've worked, and saved, and lived within your means. It doesn't even matter if you've paid for health insurance for your whole life. If you're laid off, or self-employed, or your company drops its group health plan, you could find yourself uninsurable and one health problem away from losing your mortgage, your life savings and being forced into bankruptcy.

Good for Franken for pointing that out.
  • about 7.6m people live in Switzerland with a nom GDP of $480m
After during a little research, the Swiss GDP is about 300 BILLION) which per capita is about $41,700.

The Swiss also require all people to buy their own health care, and the government helps to subsidize lower income resident (but nobody gets a 100% free ride). While the government pays less per person on health care, the government also sets Dr's and hospital fees. It also costs more in Switzerland for a policy. The average family of 4 pays $760/year, while my 85/15 policy is $480/year.
They also limit immigrants to 18% of the population, and local communities have a say if a particular immigrant gets to live there.
The Swiss has the highest per capita gun ownership in the world.
The Swiss have some really good ideas about how to govern (the conservatives are in the majority), but whether or not a country as large and diverse as the U.S. could implement them is hard to guess.

How many new medical discoveries did we get from Switzerland?

    From Germany?

    From France?

How many new treatments and drugs did we get from them? Once these other countries created new drugs how many millions of dollars did they ship to poor countries to combat things like AIDs with their new discoveries?
  • I totally agree with you Cheryl

  • Snarky
your numbers are a little off....Switzerland's GDP for 2008 was approx 480 billion not 480 million. so their per capita GDP was $63,000. they also have a much higher tax rate and they kick the illegals out of their country instead of putting them on the welfare.
  • The guy talking in the front
"...during this long campaign he has demonstrated to many people he takes his job seriously and I know he is taking his new job incredibly seriously." - Amy Klobuchar, Senior Minnesota Senator

How many times have you needed reassurance that a sitting Senator will "take his job seriously"?
  • Frank'n
Al Franken is a bigger skeet stain on Minnesota than both Jimmy Carter and Cooter are on Georgia, combined. God they must be ashamed that they let that election slip away into the hands of Marx.
  • Doc

So we have made this "thing" we think will solve all our problems. We must simply gratify it, then bring our problems to it...and zap, problem solved. The only issue is the more we bring, the more problems we encounter. And the solutions are often worse than the initial problems. This is the most idiotic form of idolatry I can imagine. This is the very reason the founders limited the scope of government and assigned the vast portion of governance to individual liberty. You can never "legislate" away every unpleasant (or even catastrophic) occurence. This is neither pedantic nor demagoguery, it is truth.
  • Medical Bankruptcy....
Frankly folks, there is no good answer here. Do I think that someone should have to spend everything they own and file bankruptcy over medical bills? NO. But do I think that lenders and society should be on the hook for everyone's medical bill? NO. It is like the 15 million uninsurable-due-to-preexisting-conditions. Should America's entire economy go bankrupt to cover these people? NO!

They just closed a dialysis clinic at Grady that was losing $2million a year serving about 100 indigent patients... many of which were illegal aliens. I don't want those people to die, but Atlanta and Georgia taxpayers should not be on the hook for anyone who wants to come to Atlanta for dialysis.

There is no middle ground. Either the U.S. passes health care reform and loses its competitive edge... like most of Europe... or the U.S. remains the economic powerhouse of the world and millions fall through the cracks. This is the great dilemma that no one will say out loud. Democrats doesn't tell you that you will have to give up you and your ancestor's economic opportunities... the Amcrican Dream... in order to have health security. The Republicans don't want to admit that some people will have to lose it all in order for the rest of us to prosper and be the economic engine of the world.

We can't have it all. People from the third world tell us that economic opportunity comes first, because there is no healthcare security without an economic surplus. That is why they come here... legally and illegally. The 1980s Soviet Union and communist Cuba have health care... but their citizens had not economic opportunity or freedom.

To me, it seems that all are better off to let some slip through the cracks and lose it all then for EVERYONE to lose it all.

If a conservative is a believer, he wants to enact laws to make everyone abide by his beliefs.

Wrong. I’m assuming you are referring to religious beliefs. Please point out to me what actually laws conservatives have tried to pass that force their religious beliefs on others. Granted, there are those at the extreme who would use the force of government to impose their beliefs, but they are on the fringe and how no power in the conservative movement.

If a conservative doesn't like certain types of music or literature, he forms a group to censor it.

Only if it is government subsidized. As a conservative, I don’t believe it is the purview of the government to fund these activities, but if they are government funded, then yes, I think that I, as a taxpayer, should have a says so in what type of “art” is funded.

If a conservative doesn't like drugs, he passes laws prohibiting what you can and cannot put in your body.

Not all conservatives. Many conservatives I know feel as I do, the constitution doesn’t give the Federal Government the authority to regulate drugs so it shouldn’t be doing it. However, I do believe that state governments have this authority and it should be left to the people in the states to decide.

If a conservative is a homosexual, he must hide his identity lest he shunned by his peers.

Total BS. There are ALWAYS going to be people who do not accept homosexuals, and it has nothing to do with conservatism or liberalism, it’s just the way people are and you can’t legislate acceptance.

If a conservative thinks he knows what is best for a womans reproduction, he will fight for laws to control it.

First and foremost, as a conservative, I do not see ANYTHING in the constitution that gives the federal government the authority to decide whether abortion can be legal or illegal. So, that being said, it should be a state issue. Second, it’s not about controlling reproduction, it’s about protecting life. If you cannot agree that a woman should be able to have an abortion up until the day the baby is born, then you are agreeing that at some point in its development, a fetus becomes a living being and the state has the authority and obligation to protect that life. Therefore, the debate isn’t about a women’s “right” to control her reproduction, it’s about when does life begin, and many conservatives believe it begins at birth.

If a conservative wants to bring pork home to his state, he does, just to a slightly lesser degree than his democrat counterparts.

Unfortunately, I have to agree, sort of. In my mind, if my representative is bringing home pork, he’s may be a Republican, but he’s not a conservative. As a conservative, I say keep federal taxes low so the money never leaves my state in the first place!
  • she's HOT.......

based on your observations about conservatives .... liberals must be homosexual, druggie, murderers that dont care about protecting their children from the bad in the world and they love getting federal dollars for their pet projects. nice.
  • medical bankruptcy
average cost of health insurance for family in Maine, from my own research: about $400/month not bought from employer

Wages monthly from employer that does not offer health insurance: about $1600

after car payments, rent, utilities, food, etc, what do I usually have left: maybe if I'm lucky, $200

It's not that I'm irresponsible and don't want to buy insurance, it's that I can't afford to. You want to try and tell me now that it's my own fault if I get cancer and don't have the insurance to pay for it? I'd love to have health insurance, but until more income is in my check (which I am working on that by going to school part time for a degree), it's not a reality, so don't try and tell me those that don't have insurance are irresponsible. Sometimes it's simply a matter of life happenings.

With that being said, I don't think it's the governments job to take care of me either. As a wise man once said, "Sh*t happens"
  • rejeff
Yes, I have health insurance. Very happy with it and I get it subsidized partly through my employer.

But I have friends who, for many reasons beyond their control, cannot get health insurance. I can't buy it for them - they simply are not insurable due to preexisting conditions.

Plus, I know there may be a time when I will not have my job. I have a family. I couldn't trade off mortgage for cobra so I'd be hosed.

I want the option for my friends to get coverage and I want the safety of knowing I can get affordable coverage should I lose my job without having to lose everything else as a result.

    great example is this:
    http://www.insurance.com/health-insurance/coverage/pros-and-cons-of-catastrophic-health-insurance.aspx

which sounds great. except, I had an event in my life that resulted in a couple million $$ in medical bills. I had insurance at the time and it was a no brainer.

But - even if I'd had catastrophic insurance, I'd still be hosed.

That's kind of the point - it's hard to plan what kinds of illness or situation the health of you or your family will put you in. And costs are so high now, even with coverage, it can still be too much for most middle class familes. Add on the lack of income from job loss and it gets worse.

And what I hear from folks here is - oh well. You SHOULD lose your house and your car and everything you've saved because you got cancer or your kid got cancer and you decided to pay the heating bill while you looked for a job rather than pay for Cobra or catastrophic coverage. Or, now that you have a job and could get insurance, it's your fault that you had cancer before and can't get anyone to insure you.

these are just not realistic responses to problems.

which is why reform is needed.

I am in no way trying to say that liberals are any better, in my opinion, both conservatives and liberals are equally guilty of eroding our freedoms.

This is repost of Mark Lehman's post and he did an excellent job of pointing out some differences between the two ideologies, but I can't let conservatives slide on their detractors.

if you do then why in the heck do you want to also pay for someone else's insurance? if you dont then I can see why you are so adamant about this bill...you want the government to force us to take care of you.
  • Didn't Even Click On The Video
Because I was mesmerized by that Eva Longoria looking girl behind him.

And Fontana, go back under the rock whence you came.
  • 50 percent?
I saw Oprah talking to some women in Copenhagen. Those women were telling us how they get free healthcare and free daycare and free education and they get 6 months of paid maternity leave and that it is such a great deal for them and that it is only costing them 50 percent of their paychecks....
I need add that I never watch oprah...I was flipping the channels and some scandinavian babes got my attention.
  • JoeShmoe
I wish I could take credit, but it was forwarded to me this morning in an e-mail. I just wanted to share it with you all. ;) PS: I did change the end.

Franken may be a fruitloop but he seems to pick nice brunette staffers...
  • Self loathing in Minnesota
How else can you explain Al Franken, Paul Wellstone, Jesse Ventura, Hubert Humphrey, and Eugene McCarthy?
The population of Minnesota is about as monolithic as it gets. Except for the poor Indians, Minnesotans are white, nordic, protestant, and generally hate themselves and will vote for anything and anyone that is different from them.
The Jewish population is less than 1% in Minnesota. Yet, we get Al Franken and Paul Wellstone.
Minnesotan's self loathing is disguised as being broad minded.
But I'm not fooled. Any state that would vote for these clowns must be truly sick.
  • Difference
Don't know if that was original or not, Cheryl. It was dead on nonetheless.
  • Massaging The Data
So Franken thinks our success in treating cancers is means these cancers are easily treatable and therefore should not be considered as an argument? Tell that to all those survivors out there, like me. What an IMMENSE insult.

How much of the bankruptcy data did Frankensenator cherry pick? Switzerland? How many people live there? Please....

i'm a market anarchist so don't you lecture me on freedoms
  • Expand Tax Free Medical Savings Accounts
Sounds good and responsible. Considering the millions of foreclosures from lost jobs (we're past the adjustable rate mortgages), how would anyone in their right mind think that people earning a median income of 50k per year can save:

8 Months of living expenses in case of losing a job - $24,000 @ 3k per month.

Retirement savings of at least 10% per month needing a minimum of 300k by age 40 to meet retirement needs.

Now talk medical savings accounts to cover catastrophic issues that insurance won't cover. A person I know has insurance and owes 300k on a 1.5 million + bill and they are in their 40's.

Now, how many folks commenting here could resolve their retirement, emergency savings, and a 300k hospital bill by the age of let's say, 45. I wonder how many people actually know the details of their medical plans.

You cannot plan or budget for something that has no price limits, unpredictable, beyond the grasp of a free market, or an absolute necessity to survive.
  • remattisben
govt is not god. govt is us.

so, if we want to change something - we elect reps to get that done.

and we have two other branches of govt to check that power.

everything else is demagoguery or, worse, pedantic.

which is the point I keep making and you all just miss - ideology is great for debate but, we have real problems here.

All you're saying is - tough. And, by the way, dont bother getting your rep to do anything about it or elect a president who will do anything about it.

You saying "tough" is fine - free country. You not accepting the constitutional means of others to find a voice to get something done to fix it while asserting that same constitution as a supposed road block to that end is ridiculous and insulting to those of us who understand how this is supposed to work.

If you're right, you have the SCOTUS. past that, you have elections.

    Good luck.
  • The difference between conservatives and liberals
    Conservative vs liberal
If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn`t buy one.
If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat.
If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for
    everyone.

If a conservative sees a foreign threat, he thinks about how to defeat
    his enemy.
A liberal wonders how to surrender gracefully and still look good.

If a conservative is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a liberal is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a black man or Hispanic is conservative, they see themselves as
    independently successful.
Their liberal counterparts see themselves as victims in need of
    government protection.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his
    situation.
A liberal wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.
(Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping
for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A liberal demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a conservative slips and falls in a store, he gets up, laughs and is
    embarrassed.
If a liberal slips and falls, he grabs his neck, moans like he's in
    labor and then sues.

If a conservative reads this, he will have a good laugh.
If a liberal reads this, he will be "offended".

  • T-shirt and Snarky
I know this is hard for libs to swallow, but government is not god. The government has no obligation or duty to prevent LIFE from happening. It cannot, and should not, attempt to protect us from ourselves. Part of the greatness of liberty and life is that we have the right to fail (or even die). My belief in an omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent creator (not government) who is benevolent in allowing our free will; yet still with His hand upon the rudder; is what comforts me. Government has too often wreaked havoc through unintended consequences when trying to protect against "life". I would never use force to make you comply with my beliefs. Don't use the force of government to make me comply with your beliefs.
  • I wonder...
Was that Stewart Smalley of was it Al? Think he get's confused sometimes and forgets he is in character?
  • @ Tim In Greensboro
    You are wrong.
MOST Americans DO NOT want government-controlled healthcare. MOST Americans are happy with their current health insurance. Stop paying heed to pre-concluded polls containing 2-to-1 democrat voters conducted by the Washington Post.
  • re:Tim
WTF? You did some actual research or you just pull that out of your @$$? 'Most Americans want it and they want it now'? Hmmm...Greensboro, bet you smoked like a chimney til Ol' Doc told you your lung x rays looked like a picture of a dust storm and then you were for universal. I may be wrong, but either way, get your own damn insurance unless you just can't afford it but don't make me pay more to cover you and don't punish me because I have taken care of myself. We have Medicare, expand it, improve it, whatever you need to do but don't turn the rest of us upside down for maybe 10 million people who could be or should be in Medicare. I haven't heard a cry that we should re-invent the wheel.
  • Optical illusion.

  • ...travesty that we will have to live with until the next election.
RE Jim F's accurate post about ACORN's role in franken's "victory".
Not too sure about the subject line of my post (quoted from Jim's post).
    Why?

We have entered an era in American politics/elections where elections are questioned, races are counted, recounted, recounted, recounted, recounted until the desired results are achieved by the democrats.

They've got themselves a system figured out - we'll be seeing a lot more of this crap.
I don't like being a pessimist, but it doesn't take long for me to "get it".

And correct me if I'm wrong, but has ACORN dodged the bullet that was headed for them a few weeks ago?
  • The CDC wants to talk to Al...
I think I know where the source of the Swine flu in Minnesota is. His name Starts with 'A' and ends with 'l'. I guess the Democrats can only hide him for so long and then he gets in front of a microphone. Hope Nancy Pelosi had her shots...
  • Interesting how...
...he failed to answer her question. Besides THAT, what the HELL is EASY about surviving ANY form of cancer?????? I would think that survivalbility would be a critical indicator of the state of a nation's health care.
  • chick
ditto on the chick behind Al. no wonder there are so many sex scandals in DC. if this is what interns look like, I'm running for office tomorrow!! :-)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxWVYRUdTwY&feature=player_embedded

    what if you're wrong?

The problem with your logic is the presumption that people can plan for everything and insurance is a uniform panacea that either has you "covered" and your smart and fine or "uncovered" and you're an idiot who deserves what you get.

I'm sorry - there are REAL reasons people want reform. And REAL reasons people go bankrupt for medical bills.

And you're saying - oh well. Too bad you got cancer! You should have planned better.

By this logic, no state should EVER take federal money for disasters, right? the state should have planned better.
  • Neal's getting lazy on the Nuze
What's with the You Tube links? Where's our hate-filled, right wing nutjob rants! I need them to get going in the morning- like my coffee. Let's get some REAL nuze please and get rid of these useless videos.
  • I love it.
Easy to cure cancers shouldn't count toward the cancer survival rate.

Wow... so... what should they count as AND... how likely are you to survive those same easy to cure cancers in other countries? Fair is fair right?

And... on bankruptcies... I thought the goal was to reform healthcare so it costs less. A lack of bankruptcies doesn't mean that the provided healthcare is actually saving money.
  • Only Cares about Money
I like how he said they're only dealing with bankrupcty when the doctor brings up survival rates. It's like he doesn't care about people living or not, he only cares if the survivors have to declare bankruptcy, not whether they live or not.
  • Health care bankruptcies
If you are dead bankruptcies do not come into play.
  • Sen. Franken
We can only hope that the majority of Senators agree with Sen. Franken. It is time the United States moved into the 20th Century ( Yes I know it's the 21st century.) and joined the rest of the developed nations in this world and provided universal health care with the public option for its citizens. Most Americans want it and we want it NOW.
  • Useless Fact
The state bird of Minnesota is the loon. That is all.
  • Dr. Phil
don't forget AIG and Goldman Sachs. you see, they're not in the capitalist system where if you fail you go out of business. they are part of the government.

ViperATL, he was talking the truth.
whats the congressman from SC said "republican plans for health care is die soon." or something like that. he should have said "die soon and cheaply".
  • Al Frankenheimer---
OMG--I'm so glad I don't live in Minnesota anymore! What an embarassment!
  • Minn Twit
If it wasn't for the hot chic behind Franken the camera would have been focused on a door knob while Al ran his mouth.

Once again, real facts only get in the way of stupidity.
  • Another Mindless Libtard Talking Point
You libs are truly mentally diseased. My god, any simplistic talking point you idiots drool over. You use no logic or critical thinking. You endlessly confuse cause and effect, and symptoms from the disease, in all aspects of life.

OK, the # 1 cause of bankruptcy is medical reasons??? Really? Or is it the fact that these people CHOSE not to buy insurance and CHOSE rather to spend their money on TVs, new cars, big houses, and then when they did get sick, they were wiped out?

So, if I CHOOSE to have unprotected sex and share needles with drug users, and then get AIDS, then I die after getting a bad cold because of my weakened immune system, was my death due to the cold, or was it due to the choice I made of being a barebacked butt pirate who shared needles and got AIDS??? What was the true cause of my death? eh, you dolts??
  • Al Franken is a douchebag.
But the lady behind him... I would totally do her.
  • Aloween
That has to be a mask :O. Another example of pompous, self-important, elitist, arrogance prevalant among our elected officials. How idiotic to place bankruptcies (usually brought on by personal choices) juxtaposed against cancer (not usually brought about by personal choices). Bankruptcy is temporary....This just shows the libs are more interested in the money and the control than people's lives.

    liberal = hypocrite
  • Lil' Al
He is such a condescending little pr*ck, that is why I detest the Senate hearings that are designed to force people in to brow beat them, gives them a sense of power I guess. Nick is right, a person will survive a bankruptcy, but may not survive cancer. Al and his ilk really does not care about your health, and yes, that girl behind Al is hot. My wife does not get on this forum, so I am safe from the chopping block
  • fwankin
Yeah, I guess you have to live to go bankrupt.

I always wondered who and why people found franken funny. Now I know people were just laughing at him, he is the joke.
  • behind Franken
I'm not really behind Ol' Al, but who's that gorgeous woman sitting behind him?
  • So what you're saying Al is...
So what you're saying is that the easily survivable cancers are not survivable in France? Wow... thanks for proving our point.
  • Out of business?
So, Mr Franken, Tell me just how are non-free market, government-owned (non-free market) medical systems even eligible for going out of business in the first place? They can run a deficit until eternity and never worry about going belly-up. Bankruptcy doesn't even APPLY to government systems, you dumb *&% !!!

    Dr. Phil
  • You Make The Call!!!
To which country will Al Franken travel for treatment when he is diagnosed with cancer?
    -----
    >France
    >Switzerland
    >Germany
  • Painful
What an asshole. I could hardly watch. He's a painful embarrassment to our country.

But I love how the lady was looking at him towards the end, like he was an interesting specimen under a microscope.
  • the idiot franken
Yada, yada, yada al. The only important question about your performance is, who's the baby doll over your right shoulder?
  • Cherry picking
So Mr Franken lambasts the good doctor for cherry picking "survivable" cancer rates. Much like he, the illustrious Mr Franken, "cherry-picked" votes.

When he does it, damn the torpedoes! When she does it, "We're talking about bankruptcies here today."

    What a first-class jerk.

While I'm at it, if we have, what? 15 million people uninsured (or even if it's 30 million, or 45 million, depending on what day it is and who you ask), and if liberals are so hell-bent on redefining our political system as a democracy (rather than as a republic, to which we pledge our allegiance), why the hell do they want to ram something to benefit the minority down the majority's collective throat?

What a bunch of power-hungry loons.
  • Franken
Franken is senator because of ACORN. He lost on election night, but the ACORN MN Secretary of State oversaw a recount. Ballots for Franken were "found" in church basements, car trunks, and polling places, some counted twice, some back-dated. As soon as Franken pulled ahead, he was declared the winner and the Republican was billed for Franken's court costs. This is a travesty that we will have to live with until the next election.
  • Stewart Smalley
He's good enough, he's smart enough. And gosh darnet, someone likes him.

I just isn't me. He wants to accuse her of cherry picking. Let's see, there may be no medical bankruptcies there. How many of their "rich" folks go out of country to get medical care? Or, how much are they taxed for that healthcare?

    Stop being a horse's arse...
  • Uhh......
Uhh......who is the hot brunette seated behind the clown?
  • what a buffoon
Most people survive bankruptcies. Most people who DIE FROM CANCER don't. Seems pretty logical that we should be worrying about decreasing bankruptcies.
  • Franken is the man
Did you see how Al Franken tried to pass an amendment to a bill ending a term with government contractors that there is no immunity from being sued by women for rape? The only persons who voted against it were conservatives. I know conservatives only care about waspy men, but that is a little bit too far.
  • I'm a Pig
I just watched it for the babe in the background... my god D.C. girls are hot!!
  • Forget about him Who's She???
Who's that sitting behind Al? Thanks Neal, You just gave me a reason to tune into to CSPAN when Al speaks!
  • Cute Girl
Who cares about Al? There's a cute girl sitting behind Al. OOPS!!! I hope that my wife doesn't see this comment.. I am a former Marine and my wife is from the same part of the world as Lorena Bobbit.(sp).
