THE PRESIDENT'S SCHOOL SPEECH

Well .. he stuck to the script, and by last evening the people who had been in such a panic over the president's speech to the nation's school children were looking, shall we say, foolish. It was actually a very strong event for Obama. He got to deliver a good positive message to the nation's school children and, in the process, he got to embarrass his opponents.

One problem .. the teleprompter. Obama delivered the speech at some high school near Washington and, predictably, had to use teleprompter. This meant that he was either looking 45 degrees to the left or right, but never directly into the camera. Most of Obama's audience was out there on the other side of that TV camera, and that's where he should have been looking. Not once did he actually look the children in classrooms across America in the eye. Since we're talking Obama here, I just had to find a criticism.

What others are saying

  • Neal, your speech was far better.
  • Closer racists are out in full force today!
You don't have to read too many of these statements to know who are the closet racists, all the nitpicking and all the snide little remarks written here today and everyday, easily identify and give you away!
And yes the same was true about Bush, however most everything he said was unintelligible, easily disapproved or just a outright lie!
  • Lesson plan
The lesson plan was over the top. How can we be good little soldiers for Obama? That's garbage. But when the lesson plan was revised, the Rebublicans should have said that it was now great.

It would be a wonderful thing if the culture of ignorance were broken, and whatever Obama can do to end that is a good idea.

I wish that the Rebublicans had some decent leadership, with the guts to work for small government, etc.
  • Obama Indoctrination Speech
Glenn Beck is on 640AM, WGST in Atlanta at the same time slot as Neal Boortz. You pushed the limit this time, bashing your own listeners. What an idiot! I'll be listening to Glenn from now on!
  • Obama's Education Speech
I for one would have liked to have seen the Origional Text of his Origional Speech. I am sure that the one he gave was much different than the one he wanted to give that went along with the "Lesson Plan" that his White House sent out. If it were not for the out cry from the right he migh have gotten away with it. It is interesting that he felt so threatened by those who raised a stink that he had to back down. We must continue to be alert becaouse this Communist leaning President will continue to try to push his leftist views on Americans!
  • Point still missed I believe
Why does Mattel give Barbie a Mastercard? Brand loyalty

Why do advertisers put billboards in video games? Brand Loyalty (Obama did this too)

Why does the President want to speak to a few million Pre-K thru 6th grade school children? Brand Loyalty

The children do not have the foggiest idea about politics for the most part. They, like someone already said, don't know how they can help Obama aside from doing their homework. What it does is put Obama in thier little brain housing groups, so when they do get old enough in the next 4-12 years they will remember Obama and hopefully align with the Democratic Party. Not saying that they will but just planting that little "ACORN" in their heads hoping it will grow into a mightly oak of support for their party. Once again rooting to power not short term support for Obama, but lifelong support for a f**cking political party.
  • A good idea for professor Obama
Perhaps Obama should have told those little future taxpayers about how much money he is spending so they will understand how hard they need to work. He could have given a really nice little math lesson to calculate an estimate of the average amount of debt each of them will need to pay in order to cover the principle plus the interest.
  • @ Club-a- ..yawn..
Elitist? You're one to talk. You come on here and put yourself on this soapbox, preaching to the choir. Disappointingly, you squander your efforts trying to bash one party when both are equally guilty of destroying our nation, just in different ways. This mentality/strategy is what perpetuates the two party system which is failing us, and that is what I have a problem with. You constantly use ‘we’ this and ‘we’ that… Are you a member of some kind of club which you speak on behalf of? I speak for myself and provide my own opinions, independent of a need to feel like I have a whole committee standing behind me. Referring to yourself as a plurality doesn’t augment the merit in your arguments, though if it makes you feel better, I’m not one to say you should stop.

Speaking to your age-bashing reference - I was born in 1980. I remember the kiddy newspaper (Weekly Reader) running articles on both Bush and Dukakis, even polling kids on who they'd vote for. This all under the glorious Reagan years... wacky politicians were trying to get to kids indoctrinated even then. The Gulf war happened when I was 11. I watched Clinton’s inaugurations, both of them, on televisions in my classrooms. I don’t have a problem including children in the politics of the present, otherwise they would be ignorant of their living history when they’re older, and this would further our youth’s ignorance of politics, which is why we have who we have in the Oval Office today. I was attempting to put myself in the mindset of a child watching a President speak, based on my recollection of what early childhood was like. It's called empathy, give it a shot, it helps you formulate better arguments instead of spewing talking points.

I'm 29 years old. That is old/experienced enough to run for Senate in 2010, according to our wise founding fathers. If you've got a problem with people my age or younger, maybe you should stand in front of our military and tell them how inexperience and unintelligent they are, simply because they largely haven’t reached whatever age you may be (assuming you’re older than mid-20’s). Years don’t necessarily equate to wisdom, otherwise we’d have seen more than 51% of 60+ Seniors voting for McCain, right? They sure don’t vote Libertarian…. Care to bash them too?

You'd be surprised at how much we agree on, I just don't care for your caustic delivery. Hell, even your name evokes a mild allusion to violence. I'm willing to use my first name, disclose my age and residency in these forums… you get to hide in anonymity behind a cute little name. Maybe that is a sign of maturity …I think of it as dishonesty.

Glad I could stir you up.
  • Any oppurtunity
Obama may be a nice guy, I wouldn't know and I don't really care, he's a threat to the Republic, and the battle to make him a one term president has become one of zero sum gain. Yeah, he may say nice things every once and awhile, he's a politician they all do that, but ultimately, he's a liar and his actions dictate that the survival of America becomes less and less likely with the possibility of his reelection. So Boortz, are You going to become an apologist for a demogogue, simply because he happened to say a few pertinent things to school children, or are you going to point out that he sends his two daughters to an elite private school, while disallowing children of lessor means to attend the same school through a voucher, or school choice program?
  • hmmmmm
    http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/53712
  • neal is stubborn
Jeez, people flipped out because Obama wanted children to write down how they can help him push his agenda. He's a politician with a liberal agenda, it's only logical people wouldn't want their children to come up with an answer to that.

Also, the White House did say they removed any controversial parts from the speech right as the outcry began. So instead of disrespecting people who are increasingly concerned with Obama and Democrats trying to brain wash our children in schools, Neal should recognize that people who spoke out against Obama's speech succeeded in pressuring him to leave his agenda out of it.
  • @Commoner
"The Republicans need to tone down the rhetoric and figure out how to get the independents and moderates back to voting Conservative (the polls show they are). It does matter how you win."

You are confusing Republicans with Conservatives. You actually have it backwards. The conservatives, including many independents, are leading this movement and the GOP, as spineless and gutless as they are, have come along for the ride. This so called "rhetoric" and protesting is coming from the people. Seriously, can you name any Republicans in Congress that have really made an impression these last few months? They are being carried by the people and talk radio is doing the heavy lifting.

Look at the polls, as the Dem Party's ratings are sinking down like a limp di
There should be no compromise on CRAP. Compromising on CRAP is still CRAP. Stick with you beliefs. The problems always start when we begin to pander and compromise our beliefs. That is why the GOP has gone downhill. Take health care, what's the compromise, huh?? what could posibble be the bipartisan way? Half-socialism, half free market, is that bipartisan solution??

No compromise, no apologies. We are right, they are wrong. Stick with your ideals. That simple.
  • Daniel!!!
Daniel, the only hate coming out today dude is from you. I mean really: "You are a waste of good blood and hair; your pittiful hate-filled lives are a testament to this"????

Who has been sitting here talking about ANY president talking to our children? Oh that's right ALMOST ALL OF US!!!

Do you have to be so blind?

And that ignorant rant about it being all about race has got to stop. You people (take that how you want I know you will) just wish it was so easy as being all about race. Just then you wouldn't have to face the facts. It's about his ideology. Okay? Got it?

This nation was established as a republic and his "fundamental changes" are not fitting into that. THAT is why people do not trust him.
  • @Daniel
Daniel, yes he was in a room with a couple dozen schoolkids -- not on TV speaking to a few MILLION.

And where were YOUR precious leftist Democrats when President H.W. Bush made a similar televised address to schoolkids in 1991? They were screaming bloody murder! Calling it 'political indoctrination'. Shouting that the resources of the government shouldn't be USED for such a thing. They held CONGRESSIONAL HEARINGS on the issue. Dragged Department of Education officials in front of their tribunal, and even threatened to cut funding for educational programs.

So don't lecture US about overreaction. The left went WAY overboard when H.W. Bush did the exact same thing -- and he didn't even require a 'lesson plan' afterwards.
  • Like I said YESTERDAY BOORTZ
I'll sum it up succintly so you can understand.
    1. Say nothing and let OMarxist do his thing unchallenged and worry about it later regardless the consequenses.

    2. Raise hell, stop the commie in his tracks or at least let him know we're not the wimps he thinks we are and circumvent a potential problem. Which by the way, might let him and his kakistocracy know we're paying attention, we're serious and they better watch their butts.

Do you think maybe they smell the tar yet?
  • Re: Club
Your attitude is what is wrong with the Conservative Party. Taking the all or nothing highway is going to guarantee that the next 50 years of politics are dominated by a Democrat agenda. The Republicans need to tone down the rhetoric and figure out how to get the independents and moderates back to voting Conservative (the polls show they are). It does matter how you win.
  • Clueless
Neal, once again you are clueless. When you don't trust someone, AT ALL, the last thing you do is let them talk to your children. I am glad the parents of the school my kids go to raised an uproar and stopped it from being shown. Victory!
  • Keep it Going
For the millionth time, WHo THE HELL CARES WHAT THE OTHER SIDE WILL CALL US?????????? Haven't you gotten through your thick heads yet that conservatives could take the shirts off their backs and give every single penny they have to the "lesssss fortunate" and the next day the libs will still demonize us. Quit worrying about what they will say. Look at the way they are demonizing us over Van Jones! We are the culprit, and not the commie, racist, truther lunatic!

The fact of the matter is that we finally got them on the defensive. Anything they try to do, you squash them. Yeah,, yeah, for you wussies out there, it's disrespectful and we shouldn't lower the bar to what they did over the last 8 years blah blah blah... Bottom line: it works. That's what the Dems did to Bush, and guess what, in November 2008, the Dems could have run a totem pole for president and they would have won because just the mere mention of Bush made people puke so much so that OBozo's whole campaign, other than Change and Hope, was chants of "we don't need 4 more years of Bush".

We need to use any and all tactics against them. Whatever works. Alinsky-style tactics. The end result is too important to be worried about style points.

Forrest, I am getting pretty tired of you lecturing us and your elitist "I am so smart because I see both sides of the issue" crap. Based on what you have written (8 years old during Bush Sr), I take it you are in your mid-20's. Spare me your worldly knowledge. Experience life a few more years in the real world, and then get back to us.
  • Presidents and Children
Drop it allready! As they say in polite circles - " your slip is showing ".
Where was the President of this nation on 9/11 when the planes hit ? Not just talking to your precious little spawn, but ACTUALLY in the SAME ROOM with them...breathing the same air even ! He told them the same stay in school routine and shared a little story about a goat. You dissenters are disgusting, and you are certainly not the patriots you feel yourselves to be. You are a waste of good blood and hair; your pittiful hate-filled lives are a testament to this. I mean really people, is this what it has come down to... " Save me from the scary Negro !!! ". I can't beleive I spent all those years in the bastions of formal education just to be outnumbered by mental toddlers with nothing better to do than get in the way.
  • Obama Speech What He REALLY Wanted To Say?
Overall, a general speech for staying in school and learning what you should. However, was this the agenda Obama wanted to cover? Did the Right-Wing crowd give their comments too early, allowing Obama and the writers to change the speech and make the non-Obama supporters look foolish? We will never know!!!!
  • Obama's speech
Read a very similar comment from a student at Jonesboro high school. He stated the President did not look at his audience.
  • Obama School Speech
I disagree Neal. We did not have the speech prior to the Teachers Union putting together the bogus reflection work. If it had been on the up & up no changes would have had to be made.

This furor allowed the speech writers to get out of the way of what was really their intention all along...and appear as though this administration was on the up & up.
  • teleprompter
The teleprompter/puppet-master thing is always worth a laugh. Only an incompetent dumbass would put himself into a situation that invites constant ridicule. He obviously cannot speak without the damn thing. It's a phenomenon that will definitely stand the tests of time.

Every time I see one of his speeches, I think of that Will Ferrell movie, "Anchorman", where he says ANYTHING that's on the teleprompter and has no clue what he just uttered.

Obama's press conferences are almost Twilight Zonish (with the big monitor in the back of the room that feeds him the answers). I remember when a stupid reporter asked him a question about being a black president. I was picturing some powder white puppet-master typing the sob story answer.
  • If you are not embarrassed....
You should be...The far right are acting like loons. Applaud the speech for what it was...a speech asking children to realize their potential. This is a very conservative ideal. If you look past your hatred for everything President Obama, you could see that this was harmless but with benefits. The conjecture regarding what may or may not have been written were it not for the Conservative uproar, should embarrass you as well. This type of sensless banter from Conservatives is why the far left will make many gains in the next election.
  • Re: james from 9:19
he is your child's President too. I don't believe the US Constitution limits a President's right to free speech.
  • The Boortz take
Boortz suffers from white guilt and that's why he sided with BO on this subject.
  • @ Karl Get Real
/I don't believe for a minute that President Obama delivered the original version of his speech. He changed it because of the uproar from conservatives./

Oh Good Grief! This is another example of simple desperation on the part of right wingers who don't want to admit they were wrong. Sure some conservatives got caught up in the furor but this was not a conservative protest, rather a right wing one.

And in spite of the ego of the right wing media, the White House did not change the speech because of them.
  • The Children...
there are reports out there that he spoke directly to the kids BEFORE the televised portion. Does anyone doubt that????
  • the barking dog
Neal - would it ever occur to you that some of us are simply tired of this guy constantly running his mouth?

Primetime news conferences? Joint sessions of Congress? Speeches to students? The guy simply never shuts up.
  • obama's School Address
In my opinion, the speech obama gave could have been different from the one that he originally planned to give.

Remember, after the uproar the planned follow up for the children was also changed and later I read, totally put aside.

So, imo, it doesn't mean those of us who were concerned are left looking foolish. It might just be his script was also changed.
  • Obama's pre-speech sales pitch
Prior to his nationally broadcast speech to students on Tuesday, President Barack Obama made a pitch for health care reform in a discussion with 40 freshmen at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Va.

The president traveled to Wakefield High to give a speech on education reform. The speech was posted in advance on the White House Web site to quell fears that the president intended to plug his political agenda to impressionable minds.

Although the president avoided controversial topics in his speech, he did promote health care reform in a face-to-face discussion at Wakefield High School.
    http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/53712

So much for "sticking to the script".
  • Speech
    Neal:
Even though Obama's speech was neutral and didn't set any agenda, the parents who opted not to let their kids watch and those who opposed the speech altogether took the proper action regardless of your opinion. No one really expected a commie recruitment speech, Obama pretty much said what was expected, but given his track record, better safe than sorry. There's one possible aspect that hasn't been mentioned and that is subliminal messages embedded in the tape delay. Who knows what was added between the lines for the young minds to absorb. It could be simple cartoons delivering a message about socialist healthcare.
  • Neal you kill me
Neal - The W.H. changed the script to make people look foolish. As smart a guy as you are, sometimes your blind as a bat! That became the plan after the uproar. I for one am just glad its over. Now we can move ahead to the battles ahead!

And you are correct he can't look people straight in the eye for two reasons.
    1. He has to read off the teleprompter.
    2. He's a liar!
  • butt neckid
    what speech?

    that's what i'm saying.
  • Mothers & Fathers vs Parents (or vice versa)
I DID NOT watch the speech, but, not because I no longer have lap monkeys attending PS? whatever. I DID NOT watch the message because I simply cannot stand the messenger! His arrogance, his cadence, his posturing, his.........well, some of you understand and the ones that don't understand either simply choose not to or they're blinded by the glow from his halo. Somebody tell me please, did he once address the children as to how important it is to obey your parents? Then, on the other hand, one must have parents in order to be able to obey them. The vast majority of kids today don't have PARENTS, they either have a mother, or a father, and some of them even have a mother and a father. This isn't to be compared to and/or confused with.....PARENTS! A parent will work with the child(children) to see that they're properly taught and, dare I say, disciplined. We hardly ever see concrete evidence today of a child that has been properly reared. The vast majority of them show complete disregard for others and as far as having r-e-s-p-e-c-t for their elders, well.....that's pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur(s). So.....to wind this up, he pretty much wasted air time and a whole lot of breath by not telling mothers and fathers that it's time for them to become PARENTS!
  • political.brad@bishopland.net
I think it's important to note:

Had Bush given this exact same speech those against it would have been all for it and those that think it's wonderful would have been up in arms about it.

It's much like how if Bush mentions 'God' or goes to church then he's a religious nut. If Obama does it the same folk ignore it.

It's one of the things that really gets me about politics:
Do you have core beliefs or a core team and "he's your guy!" (or not your guy as the case may be).

If you're solely following your team you're lacking in principles. They both (Dems and Reps) hose us over just in different ways. Not everything that Obama has said and done has been reprehensible and you're foolish to believe that McCain would have been that much different that Obama.

Government spending on crazy programs is a bad idea. When the Republicans were doing it I heard Democrats complain. Now that it's reversed the complaints are reversed. The 'it's a bad idea' really shouldn't change based on the political affiliation of whomever is your representative.

From what I heard of the speech, I didn't have any problems with it. The 'lesson plan' stuff seems like it's just a fall-back plan for those who were against the speech from the start.

While I can understand the apprehensiveness of folks to have their kids spoken to by someone who's not-their-guy I think it's better to let the person speak and then go over it with your kids asking them what was said, etc. It's just information, the person may be giving the wrong information but it's still just information (not saying Obama did - just to make the point).

For example, let's say some crazy Nazi came to the school and said, "Hate the jews." I could easily look at my kids and tell them, "well that's just stupid." If the same Nazi walks in and says, "You shouldn't kill people." Well, I really have no problem with that. You -shouldn't- kill people. Separate the message from the person and address the message.

Put it on a more personal basis: There are problem folks reading this (just based on stats) that have a spouse who is cheating on them or who, themselves, are cheating. So, if you're kid came to you later in life and asked, "I'm thinking about cheating on my spouse," wouldn't you want the message to always be, "Don't cheat on your spouse," regardless of whether it was the one who cheated or not? The message stays the same and true regardless of who delivers it.
  • THE PRESIDENT'S SCHOOL SPEECH
I tend to disagree with you, Mr. Talkmaster, one this one. I think was an example of the conservative/libertarian resistance trying to "Keep up the 'skeer," on a disorganized enemy, as a certain general once advised. We simply must not give the Obama people room to breathe on ANY issue, no matter how trivial. Look at all the time and distraction this inflicted on the Dear Leader and his minions over the last couple of weeks. Even if the resistance looks a bit picayune in this affair, the net impact on the administration is well worth it.
  • Thank God...
Thank God that Obama gave a speech to those kids yesterday, because otherwise Christian parents would never get riled up over what their kids are being taught in public schools. Why pay attention to the secular fundamentalism, the lack of discipline, and the government dependence that your kids are being taught on days when the President ISN'T giving them a speech? Get a grip folks.
  • Real Reason for Speech?
Study hard, get good grades, get better jobs 'cause I've already spent your money!
  • Obama's Speech to School Children
Obama sounded like Ronald Reagan with his personal responsibility theme. Too bad that his policies are 180 degrees from his rhetoric.
  • When is the right going to learn ?
Neal hit the nail right on the head. The people who made a media uproar over this speech (which was viewed by the public as another voice of Conservatism) were left looking like paranoid neurotic fools.

When is the GOP going to stop this aggressive verbal assualt on Obama and the Democrats and actually focus on getting their agenda, their plans out to the public ?

The Democrats don't even need to attack the right. They just sit back and watch them defeat themselves.
  • school speech
...The main reason the speech should not have been done is because government should not be involved in education; not complaining about that point makes you less of a libertarian...of course we know you are not truly libertarian in the first place.
  • Obama speech to school children
I didn't listen to or read the speech. However, it strikes me as very sad that what this whole fiasco speaks to is how little trust there is in this President and this Congress... not that there should be any, mind you. I wonder if that has occurred to any of our Democrat friends? I can't (at age 63) recall a greater disconnect between the people and the federal government in my lifetime. We are in trouble, my friends.
  • The Speech
This speech actually was pretty good. My daughter (9 yrs old) did not attend, because my wife and I already do a fine job of expaining the importance of an education. My issues with the whole "show" were simply this. What would the topic have been if people did not react with outrage? (My guess was about service and "giving back")And, if this was such a topic that President Obama felt so strongly about (working hard and taking responsibility) then why hasn't he been talking about it for the past TWO YEARS! If he values working hard and doing well because of it, why are his policies punishing those who do just that. So obvioiusly this was just a speech that does not conform with his real beliefs and was done purely for political reasons. That was why my daughter did not need to be subjected to it. Had she been in high school, she would have attended so that we could discuss it afterwards.
  • I can remember being 8 years old...
and if I saw the president on TV giving this speech, and the teacher asked me 'now, how can you help the president?' I'd probably say 'do my homework' or 'study more' or 'not give purple nurples to Brian.' I wouldn't be saying 'run up another trillion dollar deficit, pass it down to bankers at a low interest rate with hopes of their lending it to unqualified borrowers in an effort to stimulate a stagnant economy resulting from unfunded Republican wars and tax cuts.' But, maybe I was just a stupid 8 year old.

Seriously - "how can I help the president?" is all you've got? I don't like what the guy is doing, but this is just a bunch of scare tactics from the idiot Michelle Malkin's of the right. Bush Sr. came on TV when I was a kid and asked us what we could do for our country, and that was during a war to protect Kuwait- no WMD's or terrorist attacks even having happened yet. I don't think the Dems went nuts and said we were being indoctrinated into a Hitler Youth type of program.

Seriously people, argue important points -like the unbridled spending that BOTH parties have perpetuated since 1980, the mismanagement of our currency by the Fed Bank, our massive trade deficit due to our excessive corporate and productivity tax structure, and our desire to maintain a world empire when we have no manufacturing or labor base to pay for it.

We need to get our House in order ...and our Senate too. Thats where the problems come from. Fix that, and the President is basically along for the ride.
  • WTF IS THIS: "Write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president. These would be collected and redistributed at an appropriate later date by the teacher to make students accountable to their goals."
Good thing that harmless little worksheet was removed. It would been a bit too late to undo the damage (as nice as the water feels to all of us frogs about to be boiled in this pot) after the fact. Think about it. If you were to GET to have a conversation about what was being promised to Obama by your child and your son or daughter said (in defense of their commitment to Obama and his principles), it might proceed like this:

    “What is your job?”

“I am a talk show host (or, enter your career here _______).”

“Oh. Is that more important and powerful than being the President of the United States, Daddy? Does that mean you are smarter than Barack Obama?"”

Good luck with that one, everyone. Including you, Mr. Boortz. The attempted division between parent and child is a serious issue. That's what parents and Americans need, right Obama? Son vs father, daughter vs mother and children vs neighbors. With everything else currently spiraling the drain in America, we need to have to assert our parental authority over our own children regarding their perception of an Icon and his underlying desire for power represented as love and kindness.

Nothing innocuous about it if it was an attempt to gain more useless idiot recruits for the fifth column.

Regardless, it was SQUASHED by grass roots. When damned if you do, damned if you don't the best decision is "do". I say good job.
  • My take
Here's what I'll have to say about the speech in my blog column this Friday:

"Some people are thinking that I oppose the President speaking to America’s schoolchildren completely. That’s not correct. As a matter of fact, the speech he gave on Tuesday was, for the most part, pretty good. If the Department of Education had NOT done their lesson plans for it, and if it had been delivered by a combination of people from all parts of the political spectrum, it would have had almost zero opposition or controversy attached. Imagine that same speech, or maybe a slight expansion of it, being delivered by a combination of President Obama, Chief Justice Roberts, SecState Hillary!, House Minority Leader Boehner, Senator Lieberman, Vice President Biden, and Sarah Palin. Okay, so it would have needed to be a pre-recorded production instead of a live speech, but I think that would have been much more powerful and better received by all."
  • Obama gave a speech to children?
It figures government teachers would need a lesson plan from the administration to tell them how to interpret the speech and guidelines on how to incorporate that speech into their daily lesson.

The teachers must be as brain dead as Boortz is today. Seeing that Boortz fails to understand the fact that Obama does nothing without promoting Obama and furthering his agenda.

Did we get rolled? Probably, but what was in the speech that was not given? You know the one that ended up in the shredder?
  • Here is a criticism
the NYC and Los Angeles public schools start date is today Sept. 9, and Chicago started yesterday. IF this was really about reaching the kids, then he should have scheduled this for next week when ALL THE KIDS were in school. Id this an OOPS moment, or was this speech really meant to create a distraction and a scene so that his opponents would hang themselves by crying wolf.
  • No Biggie...
We opted out because it was a waste of time and frankly aimed at kids who are under achievers. Either way - in or out would have been just fine for fluff like this speech.
  • Obama School Speach
Who knows what he would have said if the fuss had not been made, bet a dollar to a dounut it was revised. Just keep in mind, childern will make whatever grade their parents require of them, what the school requires is of no importance, it is what the parent requires and expects.
  • Oh please
Newsflash, Neal. Most people don't parse this stuff like you do. Nobody cares. They just don't want politicians giving speeches directly to their kids. How hard is that to understand? Nobody got "embarrassed".
  • hey have you seen................................
Tshirt.......have you seen my stubby phillips screw driver?????.......clean thoughts clean thoughts........I've looked everywhere and ......here it is!!!!

Ivan put is behind the rocket boosters....

nah I didn't get a chance to watch Family Guy.........had to sight in those new "sharp shooter" rifles and got carried away with the recoil.......

    what speech????
  • Chill...
    Mr. Boortz!

Why are you bashing us? People have a right to "freak" out on this POTUS and any other POTUS. WE need to keep this Administration in constant check; because, you know they are going to come back multi-fold on each issue. I turned you on for 5 minutes, and then cut off. It's 75% BS...
  • Pres Obama speech to school children
I don't believe for a minute that President Obama delivered the original version of his speech. He changed it because of the uproar from conservatives. The original version was to be about the greatness of government and what it was going to do for you.
  • Speech
I just thought there was one subliminal part of the speech when he said I know its the governments responsibility to provide good teachers, materials etc. but its up to you do do the work. Its sending the message to these kids that if all they do is work hard then the government will provide everything they need. I just love how this guy cant have one speech without saying the word government.
  • My take
I was against having my kids watch the speech because of the lesson plan I had read. Nowhere was there the suggestion to have the kids evaluate the message, which is what we adults are expected to do and what we hope to teach our children. Nowhere did it encourage teachers to ask, "What is he asking? Do you think it is a good idea? What do you think might happen if these things were put into practice?" It was all, "How can I help the president?"

I did not want my kids thinking they were supposed to look to the President of the United States for guidance on how to live their lives. It's not his job--that's my husband's and my job. And when they are adults, it is their job to figure out how to live their lives, by their own research, reasoning, and so forth--not to turn to the government.
  • who cares?
who cares about his speech? is this the only thing that has got you fired up?

i guess it is. goodbye america. it was sure nice to know ya.

neal's got it right though. he believes that you aren't smart enough to argue about real world stuff. like how we have more mercenaries than regular troops, or how brazil is flexing it's muscles down south because its oil finds, or how the UN wants to have a world wide currency, and on and on and on....

hey, did you see what Family Guy had on last night....
  • I pity you
With the exception of American girl's comment, you all seem to just want to accuse this guy of being everything from the boogie man who gives your kids nightmares to the anti Christ. I mean if you don't like the direction of his views fine..... But this b/s (he has other motives....he hates this country….he will brain wash my kids...."he will take our guns and then destroy us all…ahhhhghgh!!!") is just idiotic. Get a freaking grip! He guys is from the other side of your political views.... (End of story) grow the hell up people. Bottom line is this, if this guy or ANY man/woman can speak to your child/children for 10 minutes and undo the 10 seconds of parenting that you put in after you put down the beer can then you have other issues besides him.
  • Let's not skip this statement
Apparently, Obama cautioned kids about posting their antics on Facebook, etc. But note how he should have said "don't do these antics in the first place" rather than to just keep them off the Internet--what a loser he is.

P.S. It's good for people to post their antics on the Internet because it is of utmost appropriateness for others like employers to judge these people accordingly.
  • Teleprompter-In-Chief
Take personal responsibility ... in a government school?
Now that's a great conservative message!
  • Beacon and Bruce
    Great comments.

Bruce, you're right. Using Boortz logic, why are we all upset over the speech tonight, afterall, I am sure it will also be "innocuous", just like all his other "focus-grouped" speeches and soundbites. Does anyone actually think he will come out and say that he wants a single-payer system?? So, why is Boortz mad about what he will say on this?

    Beacon,

He made fun of the "teabag" movement at first. As for being a great orator, OBozo is terrible. For 2 years now, I have been screaming inside everytime I hear someone say how good a speaker he is. I dubbed him the "Walking Hallmark Card". The man just speaks in the simplest cliches and platitudes. It's embarrassing. However, studies show, when it comes to public speaking, people are more captivated by cadence and tone vs. what the speaker actually says. Even that, his cadence is like nails on a chalkboard. He stresses the last word in the sentence. He reminds me of a better speaking Shaquille Oneal.
  • I noticed too
Obama used the designation "I" so often that kids likely came away believing the president himself was going to fly into their very school with a sackcloth over his shoulder, like a young, halvsie Santa Clause delivering joy to all the little children.
It's not the taxpayers, who fund ALL of the computers, books, programs, buses, and playgrounds, but B. Hussein Obama himself. HE brings all this wonderful stuff to the kids. It's not the government working as a whole to indoctrinate the youth of tomorrow, but OBAMA.

And what's with that plug for swine flu? The swine flu is a manufactured pandemic designed to push government healthcare. Please, I keep hearing that so many people are worried about swine flu, but I recall that it kinda faded away earlier this year when evidence came out that the regular, run-of-the-mill flu was far deadlier than this one.
  • No attack yet...Obama must be great President
The US hasn't been attacked by radical Islamists since Obama took office, and using Neal Boortz logic that must prove that there's nothing at all wrong with the PrezBo. We conservatives just have our "panties in a wad" and should hand our kids over to him for their moral instruction because...well, the sky hasn't fallen yet.

    Great commentary, Neal. Tomorrow you'll
tell us foolish conservatives that national health care isn't such a bad idea because Obama has not eviscerated the Second Amendment yet. We conservatives just need to chill. Right, Neal?
  • Also, Boortz...
You did the same thing to the 'tea-baggers' that you are doing to the people involved in this event.
First, liberals are not going to think any more or less of conservatives than they already do because of this. They hate us all the time and nothing will change it.
Second, this is a GOVERNMENT SCHOOL message. Where is your disdain and distrust for the institution and its messages/purposes?
Obama is the most vanilla, clichéd speaker I have ever heard. Every dull sentiment he oozes screams "Hallmark card quote."
This speech is simply encouraging kids to finish out their programmed government education and be a good little government subject throughout life. Nothing inspiring to here, move along.

Anybody else notice that Boortz, who normally uses every day he is on the air to denigrate the public school system, has not said one negative thing about public schools this week because he is too busy attacking the conservatives who are tired of Obama's self-aggrandizing speeches and sentiments? Just throwin' that out there.
  • Obama
    "working hard" ??????????????????
    to stay on television?
    improve my poll numbers?
waste more taxpayer money flitting about the globe?
appoint more socialist, union, extremists or communist czars?
make friendly with dictators or would be dictators like Chavez, Zelaya?
to develop a Muslim Sympathic nation in the USA by supporting the election
    Ahmedinajad; bowing to Saudi family;
declaring the US one of the "largest muslim nations in the world"?
Or to "Fundamentally Change America" with his chosen thugs as supported by the rich white banks?
  • You Freakin Dunderhead
    >>>>>"....Well he stuck to the script, and by last evening the people who had been in such a panic over the president's speech to the nation's school children were looking, shall we say, foolish.<<<<<<

Neal, as you do with many other topics, you act like a typical lib, where you bury your head in the sand and never listen to the facts!!

Good grief! The concern was a few weeks ago over the lesson plans. Because of the PEOPLE's protest (not the GOP), they had to change the plan and the words. Who is that a win for, moron? No one was actually thinking that he was going to praise Chavez or Stalin yesterday. That said, there are many lines in the speech that are pathetic such as "I am working hard to GIVE you text books, and computers."

Also, the concern for me was what is the freakin' purpose of the speech. He needs to waste the kid's first day of school by telling them to work hard and education is important? Serious??? What a genius? What's next? a speech on telling them it is important to wipe their a$$ after taking a duece?

Finally, I am sick and tired of you wussy conservatives who are so concerned about what the libs will think. Who cares??? Conservatives could walk on water, cure cancer, and feed all the poor, and they will still be attacked by the libtards and be called racists, mean, and evil. Get with the program, Neal. I could care less about "We don't need to act like they did over the last 8 years." Give me a break. We need to do whatever it takes to stomp them down because they are not going down quietly. We need to beat them with their own tactics.
  • Obama's School Speech
Rush has it right. Obama doesn't reallybelieve what he said in his speech to the students. His handlers came up with one they knew would play well with the opposition. If he was really speaking from his heart he would not have had to use a teleprompter.
  • Obama sycophants will be pissed...
3...2...1...expect the usual Obama worshipper to bring up the "tired conservative teleprompter argument" any minute now.
They just get so miffed that the phony image of Obama's public speaking excellence can be disproven by one glance at an Obama speech.
And the standard retort is always, "All speakers use teleprompters" and "Bush is an example as to why speakers need teleprompters."
    All irrelevant.
Teleprompters are all fine and dandy, but you'd think he would memorize SOME of his speech. I don't think he looked directly into the camera A SINGLE INSTANT. So he was only addressing his machines and occassionally the live audience.
  • speech
It was NEVER about the content for me, it was about who was delivering it. Hard for me to let my kids listen to someone who I have no respect for. I respect the office he holds and I pray for him, but I do not like what he is doing to this country.
  • Would have liked to see "the Republican response"
Oftentimes after a major presidential speech, like the State of the Union address, there is a brief "response" speech by the opposing party (e.g., the Bobby Jindal speech where he sounded like Mr. Rogers and sported a creepy smile).

I would have LOVED to see the "republican response" to Obama's speech to students, in order to learn what the conservative point of view is to such concepts as studying hard and washing your hands to prevent the spread of flu.
  • Pres Speech Shell Game
NEVER NEVER NEVER look at the hand this administration is extending to you as in the school speech. Don't go for the rope-a-dope. Look at what's in the hand he hasn't extended. That's where their real intentions are. Wake up Boortz! The vaunted research staff you just praised is letting you down.
  • Republican criticism unfounded?
    Maybe so....

But when HW spoke to students the Democrats went beyond mere criticism.

They do what they do best, hold hearings and investigations.

    http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/beltway-confidential/When-Bush-spoke-to-students-Democrats-investigated-held-hearings-57694347.html

Drudge is also reporting that Obama pitched Universal Health Care to students in meeting prior to his speech.

Couldn't resist that opportunity for indoctrination. Alinski would be proud.
  • You Missed the Point Neal
The point is no President should have the luxury of speaking to a captive audience of children regardless of how innocuous or benign the message. Obama making the address in itself is political: it is one thing to speak to adults or college students; another to speak with grade school children. Off your high horse now Boortz, please.
  • Big Words
My 7-yr old complained that Obama "used too many big words and that's just not fair to kids 'cause they don't know big words!" If you're looking for another complaint ;)
  • Presiteleprompdent Obamussolini
    #1- The man thinks he's a f**king KING.
#2- At least he's genuine enough to treat our chirrens with the same arrogant dismisiveness as he does all us adults.
#3- Liars find it hard to look people in the eye, so what should we expect?
  • sincerity?
A comment I heard from Limbaugh was that the words Mr. Obama uttered were clearly inconsistent with nearly all his other pronouncements. That is, he didn't believe a word he said, which might explain why he wasn't actually looking at the audience.

In fairness to Neal, one could stipulate that saying the right thing while being completely hypocritical is not to be condemned.
  • I thought it was good...
Obama isn't the first president to use his influence to try to dierect the children in this country in a positive direction. I just wish he'd thrown in something about taking care of your own health through exercise. Kennedy started something that should be continued (or started back up I mean). It was the President's Council on Physical Fitness.
Schools (Government, at least) have the most pitiful requirements for physical education. It is important to keep the body strong. It will help the children to do better in classes. The need for medications to make children behave will become unnecessary. Childhood obesity will become a problem of the past.
I remember competitions in school: Who could do the most pushups, situps, etc... rope climbing, pullups...
That was due to the President's Council on Physical Fitness.

Now we have fat kids on meds to make them compliant... they heard the speech. It was good.

Although I am not a fan of B.O. and he is scary in many ways, the speech was harmless. He imposed his community leader skills and did a good job.
  • speech
Yes, my daughter was the only student in her elementary school not allowed to watch the speech. The person she sat with during the speech made a comment to her that she wished she was watching the speech and she disagreed a lot with the opinions of other parents. My sweetie was smart enough to act like she didn't know what that meant!
  • School Lesson Plan
Neal, you can sit there and repeat yourself until you're blue in the face, but everyone I have talked with didn't want Obama's speaking to our kids because of the associated lesson plan. Yes, they were concerned about the speech too, but it was always the lesson plan that accompanied the speech that everyone was concerned with.

So do everyone a favor; move on to a different topic. You don't have kids in school but your audience does. Don't pretend to tell us why we were against this speech.
  • What a jerk you are Boortz
Obviously the speech that was given was far different from the government school indoctrination speech and lesson plan that was originally supposed to have been given. I can't believe you of all people were duped by this thinly veiled ploy. Obama lies to us constantly, and you are buying into it.
  • President's speech
Alas, he spoke too long. One kid I heard of that saw it said he just repeated the same thing over and over for the length of the speech. Sort of like that old Gary Larson cartoon of the guy talking to the dog, and the dog hearing his name, and the rest being garble.
  • Damn!
Are you seriously still on this? Move on already, I could care a less about this subject...The man was not able to say the things he had originally planned. We all know that this speech was not the original, so why do you keep calling people foolish when it was their reaction that changed this from indoctrination into I'm the president and I'm like you BS...Please move on, Glenn Beck is just a button away.
  • the speech
Obama is of low moral character and should not be addressing a captive audience of children.
