With your kids returning to their indoctrination centers - government schools - I have been noticing reports from around the country concerning the Pledge of Allegiance. Now I will tell you up front that I am not a big fan on the forced recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance. These children are in these schools by government mandate .. and I don't the government leading them on a pledge of allegiance to anything but themselves. At any rate; it seems that every year we get the stories about students being harassed for not standing up to say the Pledge, and now the debate is being taken to a new level.

We've settled the fact that no one, not even government school students, has to stand to pledge allegiance. But the new advocacy issue is about a "Miranda warning" for the Pledge. This would be an administrative notice that students have the right to remain silent. First Amendment advocates argue that the law "compels educators to inform kids at the beginning of school that the decision is entirely up to them."

Does this all strike you as a bit absurd? Let's just see if these schools can get rid of ceremonies and warnings and get on the with task of teaching. Look ... they have about 12 years to teach these kids how to make change, learn how to read People Magazine and cook French fries.

  • Feedom
Get a grip! This is America not GB, Remember we won that war with the blood of or fathers, sons, and mothers who died to keep that flag standing. You people who discard this pledge need a history lesson. I don't care if Obama says this is not a Christan nation any more. He is a huge mistake that generations upon generations are going to pay for. When we as human are at our end or in need of safty of life you will find your god. This I do know. And so do you people who "don't belive" GET A GRIP people.
  • Pledge was origin of Nazi salute
If schools taught the truth about the Pledge then no one would perform it (which is why the truth is not taught). It was written by a national socialist in the USA and it was the origin of the stiff-armed salute adopted later by the National Socialiist German Workers Party. See the work of the symbologist Dr. Rex Curry (author of "Pledge of Allegiance Secrets").
  • "they have about 12 years to teach these kids how to make change, learn how to read People Magazine and cook French fries."

That is just too funny, too true, and so sad. It's also why my children are not educated by the gov't.
  • The Pledge as Porky Pig recites it
If you want to see an interesting pre-McCarthy era recitation of the pledge, just Google:
    Porky Pig pledge

Johnny: You don't have to RECITE the pledge to be able to READ it and know what it says. There are a lot of things I know exactly what they say, and thus where and why I agree or disagree with them.

While I'm here, would it attract "undue attention" if before testifying in court I were to affirm as opposed to swearing on the bible and saying "so help me God?"

Here's the Wikipedia article on the Pledge:

Now let's be nice and not all edit it at once!

Ben "reading, but not People Magazine" from Norcross
  • Neal - You're talking about Union Teachers
they don't have the time to teach these kids to make change, read or cook French fries, they are to busy protecting the child molesters amongst them to do that.
  • Typo Police
"Sadly our Government educated, history ignorant populace has no clue that their are 50 sovereign states..."

Oh and before I get any pithy rebuttals for the typo, I know it is there, not their.

  • "....Gen. Lee, an avowed traitor to his nation the United States....
    By Scott Hedrick @ 09/15/09 11:15:44 AM"

Actually Lee was true to his country, Virginia. Sadly our Government educated, history ignorant populace has no clue that their are 50 sovereign states which elect, and are not compelled, to be a federation.

I am sure you are a champion of centralized government.

  • What is sad...
...is that most of us grew up saying the pledge because we wanted to, not because we had to.

Butt, @ 09/15/09 01:20:45 PM ...you pretty much covered it, right down to the ground. Thanks, Pard.
  • The Pledge
    Your right Scott.

I agree with Neal you can’t force someone to recite any pledge in a country where individual liberty is respected. In addition if we have a voluntary pledge it shouldn’t be to the flag. It should be the same one I took once long ago to support and defend the Constitution. Of course students aren’t taught what the Constitution is all about. That’s another problem with government schools run by cultural Marxists.
  • Careful BN
    You're sounding positively poetic buddy!
  • pledge.....flag...........................
I swore an oath several times during my military career.........I never violated that oath.....however I learned something very important.......

they are just words......some can utter them and it doesn't mean anything to them........to others it means everything........

and yes the flag is just a piece of cloth.......a blue field with 50 stars.....7 red stripes and 6 white ones......just cloth......but the blood and sacrifice of many for that cloth means it is more than just a piece of cloth....it is an ideal.....that's the reason people have died trying to get here to live under that piece of cloth.......

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS ONE NATION UNDER GOD INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.......play ball.........................
  • Pledge of Allegiance
Thought you would be interested in this story....

When I was in high school, there were several of us that would routinely gather around the flag pole, when the flag was raised in the morning, to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. There were never more than a handful of us at any one time, and it was always the same group.

One morning, the photographers for the school newspaper decided to take some pictures of the group for the paper. Lo and Behold, you would not believe the number of Big Men and Women on Campus that showed up for the pledge that morning. Needless to say, they were the ones that ended up in the photos. And, to be sure, the next morning these BMOCs and BWOCs were nowhere to be seen.

It didn't really matter to the regular group that was there, because we didn't do it for the "publicity." However, it was obvious why the other folks were there...and they obviously got what they came for.
  • My New Flag Pole
I just put up a new 20 foot flag pole over the weekend. It is simply beautiful seeing the Stars and Stripes flying over my house.

When I finished I asked my wife, and 8 and 6 year old daughters if they would like to join me in the Pledge of Allegiance. My family stood with me in the driveway, hands over hearts, and said the Pledge together.

We say the Pledge - not because we're forced - but because I've taught my family to love America and to be proud of our country.
  • damn it jack.................
pleeeeze................. go clean out those 37 cat litter boxes.......the smell is comin' thru on my 'puter....
  • reply to my most hostile critics; others get my forbearance
To be plain as I can: I hate the federal government because vicious, violent, judging & malevolent reactionary sons of bitches just such as myself do not control it as our toy, tool & weapon against ubiquitous characters of your smug ilk. Next time we will be harder if not impossible to beat & all of us will see how you like OUR inflicted re-construction.

Der vaterland security ministry's minions know whereof they speak re the reality of incipient domestic terror.
  • Pledge
I say we just pledge to Obama...wait..I'm sorry...that's a few years down the road.
  • Lee the Traitor
Jack, that's what happens when you start a fight, particularly a fight you can't win. The South started a fight it wasn't prepared for, and rightfully had its butt handed to it. You are a fine example of why the South was destined to lose. The South's honor was represented by Gen. Lee, an avowed traitor to his nation the United States. Fine general, but a dishonorable person.
  • Joyce M/Blythe
Hey Joyce, that pledge was good, with or without the Bellamy thing!
  • pledging
I don't want to pledge allegiance to a flag. I'd prefer to pledge allegiance to the nation and the Constitution.
  • Confederate losers
I enjoy folks who support the Confederacy. It's a version of the "I'm with Stupid" t-shirt.

The Confederacy lost because it was run by a bunch of hot-heads that thought excitement and emotion could overcome poor planning and laziness. Rational heads would have waited at least ten more years and spent that time quitely building railroads and infrastructure, stocking arms and training a militia. However, since stupid is as stupid does, they instead chose to rush into battle to avenge their honor without bothering to realize it was their own actions that was damaging their honor. The South had legitimate issues that were being ignored or abused in Congress, but like the Palestinians the Confederacy seemed determined to take whatever action was most damaging to their cause.

Every time a Confederal flag is waved, a loser shows his face.
  • Red Skelton
    I

(me, an individual, a committee of one.)

    Pledge

(dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self pity. )

    Allegiance

    (my love and my devotion.)

    To the flag

(our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there's respect because your loyalty has given
her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody's job! )

    United

(that means that we have all come together.)

    States

(individual communities that have united into 48 great states. Forty-eight individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose; all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common purpose, and that's love for country. )

    And to the republic

(a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it's from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people. )

For which it stands, one nation

(one nation, meaning "so blessed by God" )

    Indivisible

    (incapable of being divided. )

    With liberty

(which is freedom -- the right of power to live one's own life without threats, fear or some sort of retaliation. )

    And Justice

(the principle or quality of dealing fairly with others. )

    For all

(which means, boys and girls, it's as much your country as it is mine. )
  • The Pledge
The upside: "The majority of Americans do, in fact, overwhelmingly support the Pledge of Allegiance in its current form. A FOX News/Opinion Dynamics Poll from November of 2005 showed that 90 percent of Americans approve of the oath. Only 7 percent of people polled said they would change the language of the Pledge, while three percent of Americans were undecided"

The downside is the Supreme Court Ruling of 1948.

I am a traditionalist. I dont care who wrote it, its original writ or any congressional additions or deletions. The words that I grew up with mean someting. I especially like the pledge because, as noted below, it reminds us that we live in a Republic...for now. It also reminds me of the oath I swore back in 1982; that I still hold dear today. Despite our misgivings and transgressions in the past, We... Are... All... Americans; something I think we tend to forget from time to time.
  • To Jack
Jack: Please use sentences, capital letters, periods, and paragraphs and maybe I'll read whatever crazy screed you probably copied and pasted from some KKK-worshipping Sons of Confederate Veterans web site.

The North won the Civil War. You lost. I'm sure your great great great granddaddy was a fine man. But get over it.
  • Bellamy salute
Damn Greg, your correct! This Bellamy dude had it going on.
  • Jack in Dayton, take a breath
Dang, Jack in Dayton, I had to stop and count the words in that portmanteau of a senetence you put forth! 192 words!

As for the pledge, technically no citizen can be required to take a pledge. And adding "under God" was a mistake. It was supposed to differentiate us from the godless commies in the '50's.
  • I lke this Pledge better
I Pledge allegiance not to a flag but to an idea. An idea of Liberty and Freedom
I Pledge to be responsible for myself and my family and not to be a financial burden on the society
I Pledge I will stand up to corruption in Government and make my voice heard over the mass
I Pledge I will fight against Tyranny with my life if necessary .
I Pledge I will fight for individual freedom and liberty against those will steal it under guise of collectivism
  • get rid of the pledge
I'd rather pledge my allegiance to a country and its principles, not a colored cloth and whoever happens to be standing behind it at the moment, thanks.
  • If not for the pledge of allegiance
we'd never find out that we live in a REPUBLIC and not a DEMOCRACY - that useless little factoid isn't in the regular curriculum.
  • Pledge
Ceremonies become boring the more they're performed. The national anthem is little more than a signal that the game is about to start. So...I guess it's not TOTALLY useless.

ps-at least we have a President who sometimes puts his hand over his heart as he listens to others pledge allegiance to our wonderful flag which flies over our precious 57 states.
  • the pledge of allegiance to the murderously triumphant union flag
*F* the infernal pledge of allegiance to the murderously triumphant union flag! original version by Francis Bellamy, socialist brother of socialist author Edward Bellamy of socialist science fiction novel Looking Backward notoriety. Of course the pledge of allegiance to the murderously triumphant union flag was meant to cow & berate the impressionable kids of ex-confederates during a period of perfectly understandable western & southern post-re-construction resentment whose stark existence alarmed eastern & northern unitarists, exponents of extra-constitutional--or notionally technical constitutional given coerced ratification of the fourteenth & fifteenth amendments--centralism who thought it most loutish, churlish & odious of ex-confederates a full generation after the war of northern aggression ended they would fail to be grateful to their conquerors & vanquishers for continuing to show them the error of their benighted ways by keeping the devastated ex-confederacy poor via diverting investment capital away & maintaining protectionism in world trade, among imposition of other painful, humiliating & similarly instructive policies, instead of forgetting over 425,000 war dead & innumerable innocent civilians expropriated, dis-possessed & outraged, & joining the forced arrangement's gainers in celebrating & lauding the crass bombastic results of the contrived new corporate commercial nationalism indorsed by government at all levels, with jeers & scorn for objectors who wondered aloud what the founding fathers & other early republican patriarchs would have thought! In the teeth of all that WHAT is the good of the pledge of allegiance to the murderously triumphant union flag? Thank Providence for confederate battle flag devices on the flags of several ex-confederate states.
  • Don't forget to look up the "Bellamy salute"
Google "Bellamy salute", and you will be shocked out of your mind!
  • I always said the pledge growing up
I know Neal's feelings on this issue, but I never understood what the problem was with standing up to Pledge Allegiance to the Flag. I always thought growing up that it was a small price to pay for all of the freedoms that I enjoyed as a young American Citizen. Its like saying- "Hey, I care about this country I live in and the flag I live under". If you don't care about it, maybe it is time to reevaluate why you live here to begin with. Failure to pay any price for something means you feel you are entitled to it. Just my 2 cents. I guess this is why I left the Libertarian Party and became an Independent.
  • Don't forget who wrote the original Pledge of Allegiance...
Francis Bellamy, a socialist, wrote it. To be specific, we was an american baptist preacher, and a self proclaimed christian socialist. A sort of left wing socialist. Do a little research and see if you can figure out this guy's intentions. Scary what a little history lesson can reveal!
  • pledgers
Aren't these same anti-pledge of allegiance people the same in that video "Pledge"? So pledging to the flag bad, pledging to the president good?

I would prefer we take the god stuff out of the pledge, but can understand how some people don't like the whole pledging part.

I guess that is going to be yet another dead part of our heritage.
  • Does it really matter?
My friends and I use to always change the words just to make ourselves laugh. Nobody takes it seriously anyways. The kids who sit down are probably the same kids whose parents didnt want their child to listen to the President give a speech and thus, their parents are nuts and probably sit at home all day watching fox news, angry at the world, while cleaning their musket
  • Pledge of Allegiance
Did you see on Fox news that CNN reporter talking to the citizen when the reporter referred to the U.S. and a democracy?
The citizen corrected him that the U.S. was founded as a republic, not a democracy.
The CNN guy really could not comprehend that concept or refute it (that look of huh? on his face), so the reported just changed the subject - and it didn't look easy for him to do so.
Obviously, one of them was a pledge of allegiance reciter and one was not.
