SEVERAL MORE DOMESTIC MAJOR TERROR PLOTS

We've been real fortunate here. Our intelligence and law enforcement agencies have been getting the job done. Here are some quick links to several ISLAMIC terrorist plans to kill innocent Americans.

Plot to bomb an office building in Dallas. This MUSLIM goon actually tried to push the button.

Here we have men taking pictures on a Philly subway.

In Illinois we have a man who took the name of Talib Islam arrested in a plot to bomb federal offices.

Here we have two men targeting the Marine Corps base at Quantico, Virginia.

So far, so good. The trouble is, the ISLAMIC terrorists only need to get lucky once, and many Americans will be dead.

OK .. so we caught a bunch of these MUSLIM maniacs before they managed to actually kill hundreds of Americans. But is that really a good thing? I'm really worried about something here. Just how did we get the information that led to these arrests? Did we take someone into custody who knew of the plans? If so, how did we get the information from them? Let's cut to the chase: Was anyone tortured to get this information? Was anyone deprived of sleep? My God! I sure hope not. You don't think they poured water on someone to make them think they are drowning, do you? It's all well and good that we can capture these MUSLIM murderers before they kill more Americans, but it's just not worth it if someone loses a little sleep or gets wet. We need to get our priorities straight here.

I snark to weed out the tards, not encourage them.

I know it sounds crazy but, I find it works.

I've had reasonable debates with several here who, like you, have thick enough skin and enough intelligence to stick to your guns and post stuff that matters.

I appreciate your comment about being open to alternative viewpoints.

To your point about chemical interrogation - assuming you mean dosing someone with drugs to get them to speak - I'll be honest too in that I dont know how that works and would suspect there are dangers with unknown medical histories and unexpected reactions that might make it too risky in terms of keeping the prisoner as a healthy candidate for future interrogation.

To me, we've always had the tools we needed to gain intelligence. these EITs were only used because we were seeking validation for answers we wanted to hear. And that was a top down strategy for which only those at the bottom have paid a price.
  • Yes, we do.
We need to fix our priorities, in that we need to put natural rights (that whole thing America was founded to protect) before safety. Liberty, before safety. While any murders are obviously horrible, let's put things in perspective; what major American city hasn't seen more homicides since 9-11 than occured ON 9-11? Years of planning and a small fortune that had to be funneled to Al-Queda under the radar and they can only momentarily overtake common street gangs in death.

Really, some people are so utterly terrified of terrorism, just like some people are scared witless by inane scares like "pesticides" or "artificial foods", that they lose all perspective.
  • @Snarky
    Finally.
Nance IS a good source that I find believable and I'll look into him and what he has said more before I post anything else about waterboarding. Does that make you feel good Snark? (if you bother to read this its so late) I hope so, you earned it with this argument.

As for making fun of how I state my opinions, go ahead. You'd be amazed at how thick my skin is! For the record though, this isn't my site so I can't choose the topics, just respond to what people write.

Your right about ME being off point in my Here we go again post. It didn't apply to your comment on what Neal had said in this article directly. I should has specified that "While it wasn't needed in this case, in the extreme cases I still don't object to the professionals getting the information however they deal the best way to do so."
I replied thinking about use of torture in general instead of this specific case and didn't differentiate. I apologize. (Ya, I’m sure you’re saying “Finally”)

Slightly off subject here: You could, if you wanted to waste a lot of your time, probably go through the comments to Neal’s articles and find a post by me that indicates: I don’t favor torture, I just don’t think we should tie our Intelligence people’s hands denying them harsh techniques. I think (I don’t know and fully acknowledge I am PROBABLY wrong) that chemical interrogation would be better and that the most effective would be a combination of chemical, psychological manipulation and other things determined by psychological evaluation. But I’ll argue like heck to keep every tool in the box for the people doing the job, no matter how I feel about it.
  • @Rex
Rex – About your comment to the Several More Domestic Terror Plots last Friday, which I couldn’t get back to do to connect trouble at work. (Believe it or not, Snarkybird can actually carry on a fairly reasoned debate….)
You’re right, Snarky can carry on a reasoned and reasonable debate; it just takes a lot to get through the childish liberal name calling and attempted putdowns. I didn’t read through all the comments from that article, but what I did read and the quote from Malcolm Nance are the type of arguments that “could” actually change my mind if they’d been given without the bull. Still even having to weed out the kids play the debating is fun. I never did that in high school or college those years ago and I’m thinking I missed out.
  • In their defense.
I mean, most Muslims are friendlies, and we did go over to their part of the world, heavily armed, killing their religious leaders and such.
  • Dear Mike S.
Neal is the high priest of the church of the painful truth, not Jesus. ;>
  • rejeff
    few things here:

1)being liberal, to me, simply means being open to alternatives. It's the basis of a world view. Alternatively being conservative, to me, means that you think you've got it all figured out and just need to apply the right amount of effort in the right places and the whole world will come out right (pun intended). and I think that's an absurd world view.

    2) I like my coffee like I like my women. ...with cream and sugar

    3) some of those "people" you talk about were convicted for doing the things you applaud. unfortunately, they were just following orders and those that gave those orders got off scott free. That needs to change. anyone who thinks abu graihb was the work of a few enlisted folks is ignorant.
  • rerexmatt
    Thank you rex.

Although, I prefer to think of it more as acknowledging intelligence on the other side of the table rather than "being cornered" :)
  • Conventional versus EIT
The fact that these plots were uncovered by conventional law enforcement techniques is highly laudable. Of course what many fail to understand is that such techniques require extended time, a large staff, lots of interagency coordination that does not need compartmentalization, and is usually augmented by a good many supplemental information and forensic techniques to include wiretapping and email filtering against exploitable targets. When you start comparing domestic law enforcement information gathering techniques against those employed against hardened, trained operatives, you have slipped into the myopic pre-9/11 mindset that considers terrorism a criminal act.

And Snarky, as SrChief Nance has noted in the past, the view on waterboarding is a "he-said/she-said" issue. He does not dispute its effectiveness; he only questions its perceived effect on our adversaries using it as justification for the inhumane things that they do.
  • Jesus, Neal
Try reading the news reports before you spout off defending the indefensible. All of these plots were busted by traditional investigation techniques
  • snarkypuss
its friday so go get yourself a pumpkin spice latte or raspberry mint herbal tea or whatever drink you candyass libs are drinking these days and curl up on your couch under your teddy bear blanket with your copy of the latest harlequin romance novel and shut the hell up. be thankful we have people willing to do whatever it takes to protect us. see you next week.
  • them
    so - shoot all!
  • Or
If this info was easily obtained, maybe it was a distraction. Look at the recent warning from Bin Laden to Europeans. Not to us, America, but to Europeans to withdraw or face retaliation for their alliance with the US. Maybe they are planning something big against our troops and are warning the others out of the danger zone... Just a thought. Timing seems a bit strange.
  • Tim in Ohio
Believe it or not, Snarkybird can actually carry on a fairly reasoned debate:

    http://boortz.com/nealz_nuze/2009/09/lets-get-real-on-this-torture.html#comments

Unfortuneatly he resorts to belittlement and condecending remarks until you corner him.

But he can be taught... ;)
  • Better Off Dead
Now that's a real shame when folks be throwin' away a perfectly good white boy like that!
  • retim
please show me where I've quoted ivy league experts regarding torture's effectiveness.

I am sure this guy is a joke too:

“We have re-created our enemy’s methodologies in Guantanamo. It will hurt us for decades to come. Decades. Our people will all be subjected to these tactics, because we have authorized them for the world now. How it got to Guantanamo is a crime and somebody needs to figure out who did it, how they did it, who authorized them to do it, and shut it down. Because our servicemen will suffer for years.” – Malcolm Nance, Chief of Training, US Navy Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) School (1997-2001)

I never said keep your opinion to yourself.

I just make fun of you for how you do it.

please - dont stop!! it's more fun to mock you.

and good job avoiding the key point! well done!

(in case you werent paying attention - I was simply pointing out that boortz is showing evidence of anti terror efforts working without torture and then pointing to us needing to torture in a mocking way.

which is why I called it a special kind of stupid.)
  • Red Leader:
I did not ask for parallels, I would like you to point out instances. And yes, our involvement with troops and materiel on the ground in the Middle East has been by invitation. Your Obama and the French analogy was already used by Neal. It is a paper tiger. If you are trying for literal classification where the average Arab in the street resents our presence on Arab soil, the point is moot. We are there at the behest of their rulers. If they have a bone to pick it is with them. In that line of reason, they hate and resent us anyway, in general. Despite that, our bases remain temporary. . .even the “permanent” ones railed against in the Saudi Kingdom have closed. Our presence in Afghanistan was in response to 9-11 and the terrorist training centers, financial structure, intelligence and recruiting capability that resided there under the protection of the Taliban. So, by using your proxy French healthcare, the Taliban is directly responsible for harboring and enhancing the capability of those who attacked us in 2001.

Regarding our carving up the ME after WW1: carved up from what? From the Ottoman Empire which aggregated tribal regions by conquest from the 1200’s through 1917. It was the Arab Revolt in 1916 that heralded the dissolution of the Ottomans through the efforts of Sherif Hussein ibn Ali, a moderate Arab who began the revolt with the aim of creating a single unified Arab state. He specifically solicited help from the British (see T.E. Lawrence) and other western powers and pursued provisions under Sykes-Picot-Sazonov Agreement largely to establish trade agreements controlled by a confederation of Arab states and provinces. This collective was then conquered and absorbed by Saudi Arabia. While lines on maps may be drawn, the more important aspect of geopolitics is any particular national center of gravity, not dividing lines. We have always dealt with the former, sometimes to our detriment; but that is what politics is often about. We could carve Iraq into numerous autonomous regions and the populace would hardly notice. Same with the Afghans. Tribal linkages are far more recognizable through language and culture than lines on a map. Their long term memories are far more shrouded by the overall decline of Muslim culture, our support of Israel and the ascendancy of modern western society.
I understand your analogy about shari'a and democracy and I must still disagree. Both are cultural, both reside in manmade rules. One chooses the path of tyranny, subjugation, and suppression; the other of freedom. Given Shari’a, the world be better off living under Pashtunwali.
  • They are here Red!
Can't remember if Neal covered this, but the high school in Virginia paid for by maybe it was Saudi Arabia? Until just recently, their school books said infidels were less than human so doing them harm would not be wrong.

They teach their children about shari'a law. Here. One of their graduates is a convicted terrorist.

How much more HERE do we want?
  • Read Neal's post again
I don't think any of you are getting it. I think (could be wrong) that Neal is saying using sarcasm that there probably WAS so-called torture used.
  • @Snarky
So sorry Snarky, I should just keep my opinions to myself and let you tell us all what scum we are because we aren’t blind liberals like you. We should just listen to the Ivy League ‘experts’ that have never talked to a terrorist in their life expound on torture, what it is, how effective it is and how moral it is or isn’t, instead of the people that try to get information from them every day (many of whom have the same doctorates as the Ivy league people, but experience too). Like all liberals you just can’t handle when someone contradicts you, so you want me to shut up. Too bad I enjoy debates like this, so I won’t.

I don't ax any kwestions.....I jist like to hear 'em squeel like a pig......oh wait they can't be around any pork products........heeeeey porky.....com'ere
  • @Red Leader
It matters in that I wouldn’t blame the French or Canadians for providing the help they were asked for unless that help involved the use of force on their part to implement ObamaCare. Then again, you and I are rational, terrorists aren’t. No win on this because we lose if we stay or go. But we do not engage in police actions in any countries other than Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and the Iraqi actions are dying out.
Also, we aren’t trying to implement our laws there, though maybe they’re seeing it that way, after all you seem to think we are. You don’t have me convinced, but I’m not closed against your point of view Red. I’ll keep thinking about it. Fair enough?

I do object to your contention that we are trying to redraw the geopolitical lines. Even when we had a prime opportunity to break Iraq into 3 countries along the lines of the Shiite, Suni and Kurds we didn’t. That might have served our purposes much better than one country, but we let them decide after conquering them. The geopolitical lines drawn after WWI had little to do with the USA, they were there when we showed up. Also, you are lumping the whole Middle East together and there are governments that we are allied with that are popular with their people and we are popular with their people. You make it sound like we are universally hated. We aren’t or I’d be dead (I’ll spare you the story, though it’s tempting to write about it just to annoy Snarky.).

Again, I’ll agree with you about the Blowback on some of our foreign policy over there, but I still disagree with withdrawal.
  • Rex Machina
Ok. here are the paralells. Let's go ahead and do away with the 'invitation' idea. If Obama invites the French over to help implement socialized health care its still a bad idea that the American people do not like. In both cases govt and people are separate entities, as we see Obama(and many politicians) doing so much that has absolutely nothing to do with representing the people he is supposed to be working for and the laws he's suposed to be following.

    So;

America has military bases on their soil. The average American would indeed not like Arabs building military bases over here...govt permission or not.

In Iraq and Afghanistan there was no necessity, what military branch will Afghanistan or Iraq (both 3rd world countries) use to strike at mainland America? These people cannot fightback on mainland America.Period. They are not a threat to the mainland from where they are.

Look back to world war I to see how the west carved up the middle east, the same way European powers carved up Africa during the 'race for Africa'. Even now outside powers are trying to determine geo-political lines, Americans would not like outsiders trying to do that. American memories might be short but those people have VERY long term memories.

I didn't mean to make reference to America converting them to Christianity. I was drawing parallel between shari'a law and democracy, both systems of govt. Many middle easterners are not used to the idea of democracy, coming from kingdoms and tribes, just as Americans would not be used to shari'a law as a system of govt.

Keep in mind the term the American intelligence agenicies use for when the unintended consequences of bad U.S foreign policy come back to harm the U.S is Blowback.

which is why I called it a special kind of stupid.

To your point on the advocacy of torture because of how our enemies acted - you're such a nancy boy.

Did we torture nazis we captured? no. Did they do far worse to people they captured. you bet.

you're proving that terrorism works on you. you're weak. good thing there are people working to combat terrorism who arent weak like you.

torture will get people to talk. I am sure you'd agree that, under the right amount of stress and pain, you'd say anything to make it stop.

that's the problem. and why torture has, historically, been used to gain false confessions (ask john mccain). people will say anything.

to use it to gain new, actionable intelligence is a waste of time.

  • @ Red Leader
In previous postings addressing the same points you mention below, I have asked you this before, without response, how we are subjecting Islamic natoins to the actions you describe. I will try again:

Your premise is that America has made concerted efforts to convert Islamic countries to Christianity; established permanent bases without invitation or, in the case of Iraq and Afghanistan, necessity (and they are not considered permanent) ; and redrawn internationally established borders of sovereign nations.

Would you please cite an example of each, please.
  • prophecy
Sadly, Biden was right about Obama being tested. Bullies always target weaklings.

The problem with liberals is they can't fathom the mindset of a maniac, therefore it doesn't exist.
  • Also Tim Libertarian
yes the U.N has presence here, but to my knowledge they are not actively trying to re-draw the geo-political lines or America. Also yes people dislike the presence of the U.N here but still want to give the political process a chance in reference to doing away with it...it seems over there they do not trust their political process, maybe from their govts being in bed with America and its ironic and adventurist foreign policy.
  • @Tim Ohio Libertarian
I see what you are getting at, but does it really matter if the govt invites them? If Obama invites the French or the Canadians over to help implement socialized health care in America does it suddenly make it a good idea? Does it change the majority of Americans dislike of the idea?

At its basic fundamental root I do not think, Americans would not like Arabs over here trying to implement shari'a law, redrawing the geo-political lines and building military bases, whether the govt invites them or not. Also does it really matter if so many middle eastern countries have leaders that are corrupt and do not seem to represent the people ?

I like them! They are a slam on Lane Meyer.
  • Nice Work
Nice work to our law enforcement, and intelligence services for getting the job done. Now, where are the outcries from left-wing groups about potential abuses of the terrorists' privacy, etc? They could have been phone tapped for crying out loud!
  • Here we go again!
@Red – Your question that Boortz doesn’t ask is missing a detail, “our government invited them.” In that case I’d be pissed at OUR government and be working for change there, wouldn’t you?
What about the UN? That is a HUGE foreign presence on US soil that many of us don’t want, but we don’t seem to be engaged in terrorist activity in their countries and a lot of the nations in the UN are controlled by Secular Muslims.

Ok. Snark, come get me for dismissing Red. Doesn’t matter that I used to think just like him, ask the same questions and am just pointing out the answers I’ve found, I’m just dismissing him right?
BTW, like I mentioned yesterday, I got to watch the video of Nick Berg and hear his screams as his head was chopped off with a dull knife for the crime of coming over to help rebuild Iraq while I was in Kuwait. So I really can’t say that I object if a professional interrogator says these harsh interrogation tactics will get the information without causing lasting harm. Before you whine about our reputation or any of that drivel, remember they do worse and their public wouldn’t see it if people like YOU didn’t make such a big deal out of it and keep it in the news.

@qwerty – You’re right, credit where it is due. FBI, CIA, NRO, NSA, DIA, Military intelligence services thank you all for keeping these creeps in check for the last 8 years and the 30+ before that.
  • Jimmy Dolan: Idiot
Please stop. Christians have committed worse? Really? Christians hijacked 4 planes on 9/11 and use them to kill over 3,000 of my people? Christians strap bombs to themselves to blow up such strategic military targets such as pizza parlors, buses, disco's, and market places? Oh, that's right. The Klan are Christian so that means all Christians are Klan members. You need to reverse your cranial-rectal inversion.

The event in Dalls happened all round me and where I live and work. We invite these cretins into our country, give them access to our colleges, often with free tuition, we train and educate them in the ways to destroy us. This is another example of failed liberal social experimentation that can have real consequences. Why can't the government understand that these people hate us and want to destroy us? Thank God for the FBI. When does Obama and the Leftists move to remove funding for our intelligence services.

But this should pretty well put to rest the ridiculous assertions by the radical extremist fringe right who seemed to suggest that Obama would permit these kinds of plots to go forward as part of his evil scheme to destroy America.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone say that. So don't go using inciteful language. Your leaders do enough of that.

If any of these plots had succeeded, most of the people here would be ruthless in their blame of President Obama. Given that the plots were stopped, it is only fair that you provide some credit to the President.

If amnesty of ANY form is given and illegal aliens are not sent home then we can pretty much rest assured that the 'War on Teror' was simply another scam and a massive waste of the lives of our men and women in uniform.
  • if illegals are given amnesty..
..then it is really true that this whole 'war on terror' thing is garbage. As long as we do not see the federal talking about encouraging ALL illegals to head home, then there is no reason to believe a war on terror actually exists.
