"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that justifies it."

@secular conservative
"So why does the republican party vilify non-believers?"
I wonder that myself as I cannot in my wildest imagination understand how a liberaal can claim to be an Atheist since they rely so heavily upon outside support. It seems to me that allowing Government to take care of you is a lot like people depedning on a deity to take care of them.
At any rate...personally I adhere to live and let live which means no interference from any form of government. (politics OR religion)
Ok Joyce....here goes
Article 11 of the Treaty with Tripoli states:
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ John Adams was president at the time. He signed this treaty on June 10, 1797
despise this
By the way, Not any wing nut, Obama invokes the name of Jesus more than W did.
Has anyone told you to go to church in this thread? Has anyone even asked you to pray in this thread?
Has anyone from the federal, state, or local government ever forced you to go to church? I bet not.
If that has happened and you havent sued for millions, then you are the moron.
hillbilly clintoon, serial adulterer
So funny watching the libtards going ballistic over newts affairs, while telling us redneck hillbilly clintoons serial affairs where none of are business, and how dare we bring up his personal life. libtard think, dem serial adulterer, a ok! repub affair, their are shocked, and outraged. libtards the ultimate hypocrites.
Republitards
This is why I despise Republicans. They are all for free market and non intervention by the Govt except when it comes to GOD.
Is this a Bill Clinton quote?
Made that up on my own. But, it applies to both Bill and Newt. Despite being at opposite ends of the political spectrum, the both seem to have the same weaknesses.
"Of course, he shouldn't talk the talk if he can't walk the walk."
Let me ask you this: Do you know that Newt has had another affair? Maybe now he has his life together and IS walking the walk. If he really is walking the walk now, then he doesn't deserve to be treated the way you are treating him.
I don't know. I don't know the guy at all. I do know that he's been married to his current wife for about 9 years. His two previous marriages lasted about 19 years (counting affair times). So... in 10 more years, we'll know if he's really changed. Track records say a lot you know.
DaveR.
I agree that a man shouldn't be chastised forever by one mistake.
Of course, he shouldn't talk the talk if he can't walk the walk.
"Regardless, it's funny how one guy makes a mistake with a woman or many women and then everything he says must be viewed as wrong by default." Is this a Bill Clinton quote?
SecConservative
I really don't think a politician has to "do" anything special to get the support of atheists, or non-believers as I prefer. Just be conservative. They are not going to shove god down anyone's throat and I haven't seen any legislation put forth that would infringe on my non-believing rights.
So what's the issue? Just trying to understand.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!
I bet this chaps Neals ass, his good buddy advocating God. Wonder if Neal will still talk to him.
Newt and the "Big Tent" party!
Of all the people to be talking about rediscovering God in America, one would think Newt would shy away from writing about God! Newt who said while Speaker of the House during the impeachment hearings that he was going to bring up Clinton and the Lewinsky matter everyday on the floor of the House. I suppose God told Newt at the time, it was OK to be boffing a much younger Hill staffer while still married to his second wife. Newt's second wife was giving safe-harbor to Newt's love torpedo, while handing his first wife divorce papers, while she laid up in a hospital bed recovering from cancer surgery! You have many in the Regressive Republican Party to be so proud of,don't you? Between the gays, the child perverts, the tenthers, the birthers, the adulters, liars, thieves, and on an on... you have a real big party tent, don't you?
Seems there are a lot of atheist and agnostic conservatives
So why does the republican party vilify non-believers?
In his inaugural address, President Obama declared, "For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and non-believers."
As much as I may disagree with some of Obama's economic program, at least he considers atheists to be legitimate Americans.
Contrast this with George HW Bush on atheists:
RS: "What will you do to win the votes of Americans who are atheists?"
GB: "I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me."
RS: "Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?"
GB: "No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."
RS: "Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?"
GB: "Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists."
Do it!
y'all don't make me play the "Treaty with Tripoli" card AGAIN cuz I WILL. By Aedyn
Ah come on PLEASE!!!!
Okay, thanks for the offer
'Let me see if I've got this right. 'You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their dress habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for learning. 'You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and personal pride. 'You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship, sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a checkbook, and apply for a job. 'You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, and make sure that they all pass the final exams. 'You also want me to provide them with an equal education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with their parents in English, Spanish or any other language, by letter, telephone, newsletter, and report card. 'You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a bulletin board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me for food stamps. 'You want me to do all this and then you tell me. . .
I Can't Pray ?
LOL @ Patriot
Round 2.... DaveR. where are you? By Patriot til' Death
noooooooooooo
just kidding
Oh and Jack/Dayton, I'm what you might call an atheist (don't like those folks personally, they seem to have a religion of their own). I can still recognize that religion has sculpted our heritage and there are many things that are ok with me. If people feel they need it, then I will support and defend their right to practice how they wish. As long as they do the same for me and my rights NOT to. I'm willing to bet Boortz feels the same, so there really is no conflict between the two.
Neal, stop being a shill for the cultural conservatives
I have generally thought of Neal as a fiscal conservative who doesn't get into the divisive issues espoused by cultural conservatives.
So I am always disappointed on those increasingly frequent occasions where Neal gives a platform to people like Newt to promote his "god book", or brings up the latest ten commandments or prayer controversy in a manner sympathetic to the Jesus freak wing of the republican party.
Either you are for big government or against it. Using the power of the government to ram Christianity down everyone's throat, and advance acceptance of Christianity is an ultimate embrace of big government.
I said it many years............
I told my granma that I didn't want to go to church with her anymore when I was 12.........
for lack of a better word I have been an atheist since then.....but I leave folks alone with their beliefs.......
if it makes you feel good then it makes sense to me.....if the word god scares you then stay in bed.......if you want to put a nativity scene on the court house lawn good....I like christmas time......
leave the believers alone and mindyobizniss.....
your religion and sex life are yours....leave me out of it......unless you're a HOTTIE and my wife will let me......she won't.....
so.......the folks that founded this country were real strong believers and prayed many times a day......I think they did a pretty good job....leave god alone if you don't believe.....leave me alone if you do.......now budda on the other hand.......................
It's the Message not the Messenger
Geezz...some of you posters are so intolerant and unforgiving...obiviously God-fearing principles are lost on you.
DaveR. where are you?
There's no sense in arguing with a brick wall is there? I've made my points, I'm moving on.
I just find it funny that Shuey is talking about how secular the Gov't is, but is repulsed by Newt. I get why, but it's still funny (in an odd way).
Regardless, it's funny how one guy makes a mistake with a woman or many women and then everything he says must be viewed as wrong by default.
y'all don't make me
play the "Treaty with Tripoli" card AGAIN cuz I WILL.
No thanks I'd much rather not
Regardless of any sort of creator entities existence I would personally MUCH rather Americans REDUCED the role God plays in their public lives and then develop a solid framework for common morality that does not require the existence of a being whose existence is impossible to prove and whose real morals are as difficult to divine as the climate.
Something Christians (and all other Theists) would do well to remember, God is not a requirement for morality nor is belief in God a guarantor of morality and since essentially none of us can agree on what god is or may be or even if it exists we're better off skipping the question, leaving it up to a private personal one, and developing a morality grounded in secular humanism and reason
Wow, Such Anti-Christian Angst.
It sure doesn't take much for the christian (or religion in general) bashers to come out. You'd be better off turning that angst toward the people who are actually effecting your life, the looters and moochers on the liberal left. Eye on the ball folks.
Gingrich
I think Georgians need to strive to discover scalawags among them; God, being non-existent, is rather problematic. I thought you were heavily influenced by uber a-theist Ayn Rand, Boortz.
Round 2....
DaveR. where are you?
Old News
Wow, is this another baby like Jimmy Carter that just cries about America now since they havent been a part of the political system for so long? LAME. I wonder if rediscovering America for Newt is divorcing your wife for a much younger gold-digger?
Interesting... reminds me of Caesar Augustus
"May you live in interesting times", as the Chinese proverb goes. If those of you who studied their Roman History will remember, Octavianus Caesar Augustus commissioned Publius Virgilius Maro to write the Aeneid. This was supposedly a Roman historical epic, but there was always the underlying theme of Roman values that were promoted throughout the work. Caesar supposedly had Virgil write this as the Roman values and morals were, in his time, going down the toilet.
Hence, we have this book coming out, "Rediscovering G-d in America II: Our Heritage." Does not it make you wonder that a book is coming out like this when the morals and values that made the US great are "going down the toilet."
That religion played an important part in the settling of our nation is not in any way proof that any of its claims are true.
That some of the Founding Fathers were religious does not detract from the fact that they intentionally and thoughtfully bequeathed to us a secular government.
Using pictures of John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, George Washington, Abe Lincoln and others in an attempt to bolster the claim the the US is (or was intended to be) a "Christian nation" is insidious, in as much as not one of these men could be described as Christian in the common understaning of that term.
I once was a fan of Mr. Gingrich but, as so many other serial adulterers who wrap themselves in a banner of god and country while claiming to be conservatives, he has disappointed and repulsed me.
This is no more than a propaganda piece for his personal ambitions. Shame.
