I was on an IRC channel when the topic of illegal/subversive activity came up. I mentioned a book I had read in Grad School with the charming title of "Kitchen Improvised Plastic Explosive" and it's companion volume "Kitchen Improvised Mercury Fulminate Blasting Caps". Within a few minutes another person joined the channel but did not give the customary hello or make any comments. I did a WHOIS and got an address ending in @langley.gov.

I commented that "I always feel like somebody's watching me..."

She replied, "we are"

Since this was during the Clinton Gov't shutdown I congratulated her on being determined an 'essential employee"

I've been signing that email address up for junk mail.

I'm sorry, are you asking ME to keep the GOVERNMENT informed about how Americans perceive "health insurance reform"? What do you intend to do with whatever information you receive? Your request for snitches doesn't say. By recruiting civilians like me to inform on our friends' and neighbors' conversations and emails, do you hope to sidestep accusations of - oh, I don't know, domestic spying, perhaps?

This is absolutely beyond the pale. Not only are this Administration and Congress turning a deaf ear to protests that "health insurance reform" as it's being put forth will result in (a) worse medical care overall in this country for all except the connected, (b) inadequate numbers covered, given the claim that it's supposed to be "universal," (c) the eventual death or might-as-well-be-death, since it'll be exorbitant and unavailable to most, of private insurance, (d) a dramatic downturn in medical innovation, (e) a global dive in medical care as the American health industry - on which every other country depends - loses its profit motive and ceases to innovate, (f) further cheapening of the perceived value of the lives of the elderly, the very young, and the seriously ill or debilitated, as we inevitably ration care for these people in order to achieve "savings" for the healthier - but now they also want to know who's telling me these things.

I've changed my mind. I'll tell you exactly who's telling me these things: every similar "reformed" government-based health insurance system in the world. Go get 'em.

My suspicion is that the Administration and Congress are, to the extent they ever are, well intentioned; I don't buy claims that the Administration is primarily motivated by the opportunity for a Roosevelt-esque power grab here. But I do think there are many in Congress and in the White House who don't see that power grab opportunity as something to be avoided in the name of good governance - but rather a significant side benefit to doing something "nice." I simply wish Democrats were less motivated by wanting to appear "nice" than by actual results.

I'll be telling all my friends to be mighty careful what they say, since we don't know who among us will be next to send you an email, nor what the consequences of those emails will be.

What is missing from this article is what the Obama White House intends to do with this information. It does not say they will seek to correct or debate the information. They simply want to know *who* is spreading it. Even if it is a "casual conversation".
