The liberals have had their thongs in a wad for weeks over this column by Whole Foods CEO John Mackey. For those of you who missed it, Mackey wrote a column for the Wall Street Journal on August 11th that explained his free market plan for healthcare reform. Ever since then, liberals have been in a war against Mackey for daring to go against Barack Obama or stand against the political leanings of so many of his customers!

Well now the unions have gotten involved. The CtW Investment Group, a part of the Change to Win federation of unions that advocates on behalf of workers' investments in pension funds, is calling for Mackey's resignation. The union says that Mackey is undermining President Obama's healthcare reform.

CtW Investment Group's Executive Director Bill Patterson says, "Mr. Mackey attempted to capitalize on the brand reputation of Whole Foods to champion his personal political views, but has instead deeply offended a key segment of Whole Foods consumer base." Oh my God! NO! Tell me it's not true! Someone has been OFFENDED!

In the meantime, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union is going to be handing out information to Whole Foods shoppers about healthcare reform. Maybe they will hire some homeless people to handout the flyers ... that's always a good way to promote your cause.

(Note for Atlanta listeners: You will see around town groups of about five people holding a frame with a "Shame on" banner in it? Those people are homeless winos and bums. They're hired by local building trades unions to hold those "shame on" signs naming companies that dare to finish out an office with a non-union sheetrock contractor.)

What others are saying

  • liberals
I am going out in the parking lot...and the first Obama sticker or Union sticker I find on a car...I am going to figure out who it belongs to and fire the stupid bastard...let the government take care of him/her.
  • Remember, logic confuses liberals, which offends them.
I read John Mackey’s column and agree with 99% of what he is saying.
I really thought that insurance was for unexpected events, is it now un-American to think that way?

Healthcare and health insurance are two different animals, only the uneducated and morons (sheeple) believe it’s the same thing.

The Council for Affordable Health Insurance (CAHI) has identified 2,133 mandated benefits and providers. Check out your state and see what mandates you have to pay for: http://www.cahi.org/cahi_contents/resources/pdf/HealthInsuranceMandates2009.pdf

Average number of mandates: Red states 35, blue & purple, both with 46, and some people wonder why insurance cost are up.
  • for Whole Foods to open a store in my area. F*** the unions!
  • Oh, holy crap...
the man is entitled to his opinion, whether he's a CEO or a homeless wino.

I am really starting to get p!ssed about this sort of thing. It's ok to voice an opinion if if supports our Hairbrain-in-Chief, but it's not ok if you are against it.

Well, then come and get me. I don't approve of him or his policies...nyah, nyah, nyah. If there was a Whole Foods here in Boise, I'd shop there exclusively.

WHAT THE H$LL IS HAPPENING TO OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH??? Where is the ACLU when they could actually be useful?
  • the shameless
i find that the one thing you can count on from the homeless is their ability to hold a job.
that being said, maybe someone needs to buy a case of beer and ride around town swapping beer for flyers and "shame on" signs.
  • ROFLMAO
I agree Neal, why do democrates make such a big deal whenever they are offended?
It is like when they were cursing you off for reading the DaVinci Code. My gosh democrates just don't believe in freedom!

There Klubber, just thought I would help you out. Couple of errors, but all better now!
  • So that's what it takes to get me into Whole Foods.
I'll have to check it out. It's pointless to make fun of hired protestors working for dope money, but those protest signs always guide me to businesses with better products, prices and/or service, since I saw them outside of Publix long ago.

Mr. Mackey is a co-founder of Whole Foods. These arrogant unions are trying to kick him out of his own company because he won’t lockstep with them politically. The left has a pack/gang/mob mentality that I’d always oppose, even if they weren’t wrong.
  • good thing?
lefties boycotting Whole Foods means that there are less assholes in the store while I am shopping...I consider that a good thing!
  • I love when the "left" tells me who to boycot!
So - this is another one of those situations where the left has encouraged me to spend my dollars! I'm going to have to do more shopping at Whole Foods and buy some of their stock!
  • Union picketers
Neal, are you telling me that the unions hire non-union picketers? Shame on them.

Which raises a philosophical question: Can a non-union picketer pick a peck of pickled peppers better than a union picketer can pick a peck of pickled peppers?
  • Careful here
when defending this Mackey guy. He is a flamin' lib...that they are eating one of their own is the most delicious of ironies.
  • Good For Him
I'm actually looking at buying some shares of Whole Foods today.
  • Opinions have consequences
I don't see the big deal in this guy expressing his opinion but a CEO has got to know better. It was poor judgment on his part.
  • I Thought The President Wanted Choice
If I read it right Whole Foods provides health care coverage for 90%+ of his employees. Instead of rejoicing and celebrating this guy, the left wants his head and the media won't ask them why this is wrong. I love his ideas. Mr. Obama is not good for this country.
  • You might be tempted
If there are boycotters with petitions at these stores (such as W.F.) as you venture into them, you could be tempted to play along and sign their silly petitions with fictitious cartoon names (Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Ultra Man). That's if the Black Panthers aren't there blocking the doors anyway. Be warned if you do, these signatures will count in their crazy little world of "anything goes", and you'll inadvertently support their cause.
P.S. Marking a signature line with an "x" counts too. For some of these people an "x" is an entire sentence.
  • While you are shopping at Whole Foods
Send an email or letter to Geico, Wal-Mart, etc., for caving into Van Jones/Green Jobs Czar/ColorForChange demands to remove their advertising from the Beck show.
  • Gimme one of them healthcare flyers,
I need to wipe my butt.
  • Liberal party of thought control
Actually the liberal party is anything but liberal. They are the party of thought police.

You see, having your own opinion, committing "hate crimes," and adhering to political correctness is nothing more than attempts to police the mind of the individual.

And for now, we only have ACLU lawyers and union thugs to worry about enforcing these thought laws. But just wait, I'm sure Obama has a czar somewhere to head the liberal branch of thought police, though he will likely be called the Compassion Czar.
  • I've never shopped at Whole Foods only because they tend to be out my budget. However, I WILL be shopping there now, at least for a few items!
  • UNIONS VS. CEO OF WHOLE FOODS
The left believe everyone is entitled to his own opinion, as long as it agrees with theirs.
  • Why do republicans get so offended?
I agree Neal, why do republicans make such a big deal whenever they are offended?
It is like when they were cursing you off for reading the DaVinci Code. My gosh republicans just dont believe in freedom
  • Whole Foods CEO
How anyone could take Mr. Mackeys ideas as anti-anything or racist in any way shows proof of the intolerance, closed-mindedness, and bigotry of the Obama supporters.
  • handyman
sheetrock became generic when you used lower case ...
  • Changing from Costco to Whole Foods
Looks like it is time to rally the troops and support Whole Foods and dump Costco. What is wrong with a CEO having an opinion, oh, I forgot, it was against the Left Loonies....
  • may want to pick another hero
john mackey is probably not the best choice for hero:
    http://tinyurl.com/lx2dyo
  • Whole Foods' Reputation
""Mr. Mackey attempted to capitalize on the brand reputation of Whole Foods to champion his personal political views"
So the founder of Whole Foods cannot capitalize on the the reputation of a company he built, that is his reputation not yours bill patterson.
  • Unions vs CEO of Whole Foods
Just a FYI - "sheetrock" is a trademark for a particular product. The generic term is wallboard. Now, you can fuss at me about being politically correct, but political correctness really isn't the point. It's legally correct to say wallboard. Again - just a FYI.
  • In other words
ACORN will be out front of the stores harrassing the shoppers.
  • John Mackey
Mr.Mackey has it right. As a health care provider, I am tired of seeing people come to the Emergency Dept. demanding their "free" meds so they can go buy cigarettes. Think I will go spend some of my hard earned money at Whole Foods.
  • Undermining
Yes, please, I'll have an extra helping of undermining President Obama's socialism. Some one in congress should introduce Mackey's eight points as a reform bill.
