The Office of Management and Budget presents the sobering reality for the Obama administration. There is no way that the administration can deny these facts. It's time to wake up and smell the pork, fellow Americans: Our current level of government spending is unsustainable. This is the first year that America will run a trillion-dollar budget deficit. Over the next decade, Obama's budget plans to borrow another $9 trillion ... more than doubling our national debt. This year, Washington will spend $30,958 per household. The breakdown goes something like this: about $17,000 from taxes and $13,000 from borrowing. That is an increase of 22% in federal spending this year and a record 26% of the GDP. So you are saying, "Ah well this is just an extraordinary year and Obama inherited Bush's mess and blah blah blah." Well Obama's budget permanently keeps spending between $5,000 and $8,000 per household higher than it was under George Bush.

In other words ... there is absolutely no way that we can continue the current level of government spending and expect this nation to survive. If the Republicans can capture that sentiment and run with it, maybe they will have a chance of winning some seats in 2010. However, what have they done to earn the people's trust again? Plus .. even if the Republicans do manage to come up with a viable plan to turn this spending and debt splurge around, how in the world to you get the Obama-crazed media to report it?

Either way, what Barack Obama is currently doing in Washington will be paid for for generations. The Heritage Foundation has done some research into Obama's spending habits. Here are just a few of the highlights .. things that your children can thank Barack Obama for someday, and things that you can thank those drivers with the Obama bumper stickers for today:

- The 22 percent spending increase projected for 2009 represents the largest government expansion since the 1952 height of the Korean War (adjusted for inflation). Federal spending is up 57 percent since 2001.

- While the costs of the financial bailouts and economic stimulus bills are staggering, they are only a fraction of the coming costs from Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Over the next decade, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) projects that each year Medicaid will expand by 7 percent, Medicare by 6 percent, and Social Security by 5 percent. These programs face a 75-year shortfall of $43 trillion--60 times greater than the gross cost of the $700 billion TARP financial bailout.

- President Obama claims that "we have already identified $2 trillion in savings over the next decade." This is not true. The President first creates a fantasy baseline that assumes the Iraq surge continues forever (which was never U.S. policy) and then "saves" $1.5 trillion against that baseline by ending the surge as scheduled. It is like a family "saving" $10,000 by first assuming an expensive vacation and then not taking it. Another $1 trillion in "savings" is actually tax increases (in other words, savings for government, not taxpayers).

- Federal spending per household (adjusted for inflation) remained constant at $21,000 throughout the 1980s and 1990s, before President Bush hiked it to $25,000. In 2009, Washington will spend $30,958 per household--the highest level in American history--and under President Obama's budget, the figure will rise above $33,000 by 2019.

- While President Obama claims to have inherited the 2009 budget deficit, it is important to note that the estimated 2009 budget deficit has increased by $400 billion since his inauguration, and the whole point of the "stimulus" was to increase deficit spending to nearly $2 trillion based on the unproven notion that would it alleviate the recession. This suggests that even if the President had not inherited a big deficit, he would have created one as a matter of anti-recessionary policy.

- The public national debt--$5.8 trillion as of 2008--is projected to double by 2012 and nearly triple by 2019. Thus, America would accumulate more government debt under President Obama than under every President in American history from George Washington to George W. Bush combined.

- The White House brags that it will cut the deficit in half by 2013. The President does not mention that the deficit has nearly quadrupled this year. Merely cutting it half from that bloated level would still leave budget deficits twice as high as under President Bush...

What you've provided is an infinite timeline and no real examples of what you fear.

You don't provide any examples where this is true now. You avoided the EU as an example (surly they are FAR more statist than us) and don't provide concrete measures for what is "working" (example - value of currency compared with the dollar (not a good one but, one nonetheless)

You then say that this happens over time...soon shops will close...over "time" this will slow growth.

OK - well, what's your starting point then? 1876? 1945? 1977? Slow growth compared with what? What "might" be if only we did X?

You said "That's part of the whole point of this – that the Statist DEPEND on those people Not to quit, but at some point they will, and it will be at the worst possible time"

I look at the EU which, I'll go out on a limb and say is more "statist" than us and there is no evidence that this is true. Without any defined starting point for your theory, you presume only that sometime, someday, because of what you believe, things will end.

I've got a sandwich board you might be interested in buying. It has "End is Near" on one side and "World will End" on the other... It didn't fit Ivan. ;-)
  • Send us the check!
Geessh, at $30K per household why dont we just let the government keep $5K of that $30K for national defense/military and have them send all of us a check for $25K per household and fire everyone in the Federal Bureacracy except the military and/or CIA types. The socialists can feel wonderful about themselves for resdistrbuting the wealth and the rest of us can skip the crap associated with dealing with the Feds lol
  • RE: snarkybird @ 08/26/09 03:41:37 PM
I usually go by other reference sources, but never the less, that'll do.
My point is generally that government restricts freedoms and impedes the economy, and the more government interference the worse the effect on the economy.

No one can ever point to an economy that is close to being purely Statist that really works well.

There are places that practice a 'lite' form of Statism, and their economies hobble along, but that doesn't prove that it works, just the opposite.

We're heading towards more and more interference, and it will have a negative effect on the economy.

What you don't' realize on the second question is that process is a gradual one – people all over are going to close up shop, or work part time or whatever and over time the effect will slow down economic growth.

And the government can't buy votes, if it can't seize wealth from producers and achievers.

That's why Statist systems always crash and burn.

    You said:
“Everyone forgets the first part of that to make their point with the second all the while forgetting that these same people will never quit. “

That's part of the whole point of this – that the Statist DEPEND on those people Not to quit, but at some point they will, and it will be at the worst possibly time – when the looters feel entitled all kinds of government largess and you have a domino effect of more and more burden falling on archivers that are still working, causing them to drop out and increase the burden the remaining achievers, etc.
  • spending unsustainable
Is that $30,958 per household or $30,958 of TAXPAYING households? That's a big difference, either way it is completely ridiculous!
  • Re:ACE
you said "...but try to be nice to 'Snarky'"
She likes the abuse, any attention is better than no attention.
  • growth
There is a world where the level of spending we are undertaking would be sustainable -- if we had a level of growth that outpaced the debt. Debt is only a problem when growth outpaces the level of borrowing.

Right now, we are spending more than we are producing, so we do have a problem. The public debt to GDP ratio is approaching 60% (should be there any day now) which is fine, its pretty low compared to much of the 20th century...our recent gains in GDP since the 1990s has given us a pretty good cushion. Nobody knows at what point that ratio turns bad, the general consensus is 80%.

It is possible for the government to stimulate growth through spending (science/technology resulting from space race, war, medical research, etc). Unfortunately, we're not doing enough of it. While the government is spending some money on promoting energy research (which could be a huge cash cow for the govt thru tax receipts of increased productivity), it is proposing to stifle growth in this sector through taxation (cap and trade). Again, in health care, rather than promoting growth (research, training more doctors, etc) they're proposing more taxes and regulations (which stifle growth).

I'm not saying that we should rely on the government to stimulate the economy (personally I think we can do it just fine on our own) in this world the gov't obeys "the Ratchet Effect" whereby once it reaches a certain level of spending, it fails to reneg on that amount. That means, we should concentrate on getting gov't to do two things with this money: 1) not waste it on non-growth or anti-growth proposals (entitlements, taxes, excess regulation and red tape, layers of bureaucracy, etc) and 2) spend it on positive growth media (science/engineering R&D, grants/funding, physical projects, protecting US citizens by building kickass military equipment and research, etc).

You've gotta play with the hand you're dealt with...lets stop the growth of government and use what we've got efficiently...and pass the FairTax.

Statism - I wasn't sure what you really meant so, via Wiki

" * A major government or state role in the direction of the economy, both directly through state-owned enterprises and indirectly through the state-directed economic planning of the overall economy.[1][2]
    * A political viewpoint "that sovereignty is vested not in the people but in the national state, and that all individuals and associations exist only to enhance the power, the prestige, and the well-being of the state. The fascist concept of statism repudiates individualism and exalts the nation as an organic body headed by the Supreme Leader and nurtured by unity, force, and discipline."[3]

Statism is sometimes used to refer to state capitalism or highly regulated market economies with large amounts of government intervention, and also to refer to state socialism or co-operative economic systems that use the state, through nationalization, as a means of running industry in the interest of the majority."

Now, I'm sure you've seen the graph that shows the percentage of the economy that is "state owned" right? It's an almost invisible slice. But, I guess the question would be - are you asking this in the context of America doing this?

Probably doesn't surprise you but I don't see it.

But, I'd also assume you'd point to the EU as running "statism" yes? Is it working? I guess it depends on how you measure "working". I've been over there recently...dollar was not doing so great. But, there are plenty of other measures. Of course, you may disagree it's statism at all so, hard for me to expound on that.

But, to your second question - I would encourage all who feel this way to do it. I wish it would happen sooner because I'm tired of hearing this veiled threat.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous. As I've said before, people will go for some percent of something over a huge percent of nothing every time. And when the amounts the top 1 percent make are compared with the bottom 99, I dont see any pain there.

And the more of them there are, the less weight your argument holds. All I hear when I get into this debate is all the people who have created successful business and now will be punished. Everyone forgets the first part of that to make their point with the second all the while forgetting that these same people will never quit. there's still to much to be gained.

well said. there are some really stupid arguments being made in here. on top of the list is Boortz couching this as a "current spending level" problem. almost as if he'd vote for the GOP who promises to reduce spending levels back to where Bush had 'em.

he calls a government problem a liberal problem and all the ignorant little GOP froggies in here jump in unison.
  • the difference...
    First of all:
    Snarky, STFU.
    Second of all:
Red, T-shirt, et al., We AGREE. At least most of us do. I haven't voted repugnican in a long time. I feel that most government should be internal to a person's conscience. The problem is that we have been taught by and large that morality is relative so self government has become null and void. The only difference between R and D is what kind of vehicle you get to drive on this road to perdition. The dems want you to drive an electric car. The reps want you to drive an SUV. BUT BOTH ARE DIRECTING ALL TRAFFIC TO DESTRUCTION! Jeffersonian roots is all that will save this nation. Get it through your heads! They don't care about you! ONLY POWER! They will gladly kill you if it keeps them in control. The details are irrelevant. There is a plan to destroy this republic. It's in play now. Be ready to fight for your rights or bow down and submit.

  • I'm with Kevin...
My brain hurts. I've stopped trying to rationalize what these liberals are trying to do...I know what they are trying to do...they are trying to destroy our capitalistic society. Period.

Watch Glenn Beck's special this week...most of it is on the FOX site. Obama has said something along the lines of, see who I hang out with...that's who's helping me to shape policy. The people he surrounds himself with (Czars) seem to be mostly Marxists, communists (is there a difference really?), radical left wing extremists and/or ex-cons. An ex-con radical liberal helped write that nightmare of a health care bill. If I recall correctly, the ex-con used to belong to an organization that liked to blow up government buildings. There's some change I can believe in.

One day I hope to elect my officials on who I think will do a good job, not the lesser of 2 evils. Thankfully, I didn't vote for Obama. I don't think I could have lived with the guilt.

Don't think for a second that we Conservatives don't still have a lot of anger for the free-spending Republicans we put in office – we do.

They are partly of the reason we're in this mess in the first place – Republicans turned away from Conservative principles and started spending like drunken Democrats.

Alienating their Conservative base in the process.

The Republican party needs to get back it to it's Reaganite roots and Conservative principles.

The Republicans had better damn well have learned their lesson – they can either differentiate themselves from the Statist Democrats or they can end up just like them on the ash heap of history, it's their choice.
  • Well as Private Hudson would say...
That's it, game over man, game over!! How can they release this news about future debt with a straight face is beyond me.

How the Lefties like to blame Bush. Bush did this
    Evil Bush did that.
Bush spent tragillions of our dollars...
    It hurts my brain
So again..the argument is this...for those Libs who missed it the first ten times..
    If you use the argument:
" Republicans/Conservatives weren't mad when Bush did it" ( or the like )
    Then ..
If Bush did it...and it was bad..
and you hate him for doing it..
And Obama is also currently doing it ( inferred in the " don't hate Bush for doing it" statement )
Then you MUST also hate Obama for doing the same thing that caused you to hate Bush..
Logic and facts have no place in the Liberal world...
    You just sound foolish.

Oh..and I think you'll find the most Republicans/Conservatives/Libertarians....can come up with things Bush did that they too do not agree with.
Unlike the infallible Obama and his peeps.
  • Doc!
What the hell have I been telling you for months now!!!! Yes, the Republicans and Democrats are the same.

BUT conservatives and liberals are not.

Note the small cap versus upper case.

The politicians do NOT represent any of us. Most conservatives I know including libertarians are realizing this. Now if we can get the liberals (not extreme) to join us, we might get something done.
  • Right Wing Nut
    THAT was Awesome !!!
That was the best post I've seen in a while !!
  • Statism
i like how republicans call democrats statists, because democrats are socialists. We oppose socialism and believe in free enterprise and limited government … except for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public schooling, the drug war, economic regulations, trade restrictions, immigration controls, occupational licensure, welfare, subsidies, government-business partnerships, public housing, SBA loans, the FDA, the SEC, the minimum wage, price controls, the Federal Reserve, paper money, and all the various departments and agencies of the federal government.

"We’re taught to believe that America is a two-party system — the Democrats and the Republicans — but that’s just a façade, given that both parties share the same statist philosophy and are simply competing against each other to determine who is going to control the system.

In other words, there is one political party — let’s call it the Statist Party — that is divided into two wings — the Democrats and the Republicans. The situation is akin to that which exists in the National Football League — one league, divided into two conferences — the NFC and the AFC."

  • If Bush got us into this mess....
...why does the Obama administration continue on the same messy course? The lefties are beside themselves and showing their true "Moonbatisms". If Obama is so great, shouldn't he be able to put the country back on a road to prosperity and set the right direction without spending us to oblivion?

During the election, I knew he was a polished turd. His leadership capabilities are those of a low level mob boss. He uses his fellow mobsters (czars and union bosses) to intimidate the electorate. It reminds me of the movie "Hoffa". If he wanted to resolve the problem, and even have some money left over to do some form of health care reform, he would implement the Fair Tax! He would not be selling our Children and Grandchildren to China.

I am so proud that the American people are waking up. Do not go to sleep again. Let these hacks know you don't want their spending programs.

Crap & Tax will "necessarily cause power rates to sky rocket" but that's ok, cause their leaders will make sure they don't suffer, because after all, it's the "poor" areas that suffer the most from global warming.

Crushing deficits? That's ok, their leaders will make sure they don't suffer nor their children.

See, they really believe that their leaders care about them. Too bad they don't realize it's only for power and their leaders will keep them down with handouts forever.

  • You leftist had better think about what will happen when the producers and archivers go ON STRIKE!
Leftists think that 'the rich' are a static target, that they can take from them without any consequences.

Think again, they aren't going to just stand by and be robbed – again and again.

They aren't going to work hard running a business, just to have it's profits taken from them – they will shut it down and retire. So much for the jobs they provided.

Doctors, lawyers and engineers didn't spend years in school just to be victimized by you Statists – they will take their savings and head off to the country. So much for the knowledge and skill they provided to the economy.

Investment bankers and other won't put money into new inventions and businesses when they are punished fro doing so, they will leave. So much for those New jobs.

    Need I go on?

And what happens when all the looters start clamoring for the plunder they were promised in exchange for their vote?

And the Chinese stop buying our debt?

One last question to you Leftists (and I expect an answer); When has Statism (Socialism/Fascism/Collectivism/Progressivism/Stalinism/Marxism/ whatever you want to call it..) EVER WORKED?????????
  • you know what else America can't afford?
War..... and the adventurist foreign policy it currently has, where America believes it duty to police and provide welfare for the entire planet. In fact their imperialism abroad is what helped effectively destroy their economy at home. America is heading towards the same fate. When will Americans learn?Fiat currencies and empires seem to be destined to fail. And for all the people who buy into Bush/Obama neo-con mysticism world police foreign policy....let's see the border secured and illegal aliens out or encuraged to leave by taking away entitlements, before we start entertaining another one of these manufactured crises of 'the war on terror'.
