You haven't heard a lot about the union's precious "card check" bill lately. I don't think it's dead ... just dormant. Count on the unions to do everything in their considerable power to get this passed ... they're virtually licking their chops at the idea of their union organizing thugs being able to intimidate workers into signing a card saying they want to join a union. (Hey, buddy, remember: We know where you live, and we know where your children go to school.)

Here's another reason why you do not want to see the power of unions to increase in this country. You've heard of the financial problems facing California. But have you heard what the California government-employee unions are doing to help? Well ... they've voted to authorize a strike. They don't like the idea that government union workers are being furloughed to save taxpayers money.

BTW .. did you know that over the past year wages have been working twice as fast in the government sector than they have in the private? Government employee unions.

The California government employee unions think it's just fine if California looks for ways to save money --- but from now on that money has to come from somewhere other than union paychecks.

Yeah ... we really want more unions, don't we?

What others are saying

  • Striking Public Sector Employees
So if they strike, than they don't get paid, correct? Does that not solve the problem? Remember when the federal government over a budget impasse between Clinton and Gingrich and only ESSENTIAL government services were provided? Why can't we do that again? That way we cut the deficit by not paying what has been indicated as NONESSENTIAL government services.
  • Union strike
I am in agreement; the union strike would grant the perfect opportunity to save money AND demonstrate how completely superfluous their "services" are to the taxpayers.

We all know what will *really* happen here, now don't we? The Governator won't take this opportunity to break the union - hire "scabs" for the (very few) essential tasks and simply allow the contracts to expire. In the end, the union will "negotiate" that the back-pay will be restored, with penalties, by the State, the reduced wages "returned", and likely some other benefit increased.

Payment to these thugs reminds me of the old (very old) saying for any other extortionist: once you pay the Dannegeld, you never get rid of the Dane. In other words, once you've backed down and payed the graft once, you are a mark that is known to be susceptible and each time they come back, the toll is higher.

Allow me a pipe-dream for a moment; Imagine if you will a Federal Constitutional Amendment banning all public-sector unions!

    *sigh*, back to reality.
  • Neal you are looking at thi strike the wrong way
This could actually save the budget of the state of California! If these government employees want to take voluntary unpaid leave for a couple of weeks, then the state government gets to save all that money!
  • Card Check
I was wondering why I haven't been hearing about the Card Check bill lately. Maybe the Socialized Medicine Bill has been sucking all of the oxygen out of Washington - or maybe the Congressmen and Senators don't want their constituents bringing it up at Townhall meetings in August.

I was recently visiting family in Michigan and made the observation that if the card check bill passes Michigan can totally kiss any chance of economic recovery goodbye. In order to get out of the ridiculous economic slump they are in, Michigan needs to elect Peter Hoekstra as Governor and entice businesses unrelated to the auto industry to locate there. But why would ANY business want to locate in a state where the workforce is so steeped in thew union mentality - combined with a federal law that allows workers to unionize behind the employers' backs? It's sad, because Michigan has a lot to offer, but has had Democrat government for way too long.
  • union ads
There are "trades and craftsmen" ads on radio that are carefully worded. They plead for you to call your local legislator to ask for only state residents to be allowed to work in your state. What happens if this is passed? Everyone that lives outside of the state can't be employed for construction projects. The unions? A union member can move their membership to the state in question, get a state ID and BOOM they have a job. I consider this a limitation on our freedoms.

What happens to all those folks that live just across the state line?
  • Strike a good thing?
Without knowing the details of the contracts - a strike might be the best thing for California.

Rather than furlough government employees for a week or so - let them sit on their fat, black rear-ends for 2 months. That outta save some money and help with the renegotiation.
