I did all I could last night to research this bit on the Internet. Snopes had nothing. This is a message an airplane pilot sent to his colleagues after one particular flight:

My lead flight attendant came to me and said, 'We have an H.R. on this flight.' H.R. stands for human remains. 'Are they military?' I asked. 'Yes', she said. 'Is there an escort?' I asked. 'Yes, I already assigned him a seat.' 'Would you please tell him to come to the flight deck. You can board him early', I said.

A short while later, a young Army sergeant entered the flight deck. He was the image of the perfectly dressed soldier. He introduced himself and I asked him about his soldier. The escorts of these fallen soldiers talk about them as if they are still alive and still with us. My soldier is on his way back to Virginia', he said. He proceeded to answer my questions, but offered no words on his own. I asked him if there was anything I could do for him and he said no. I told him that he had the toughest job in the military and that I appreciated the work that he does for the families of our fallen soldiers. The first officer and I got up out of our seats to shake his hand. He left the flight deck to find his seat.

We completed our preflight checks, pushed back and performed an uneventful departure. About 30 minutes into our flight I received a call from the lead flight attendant in the cabin. 'I just found out the family of the soldier we are carrying, is on board', he said. He then proceeded to tell me that the father, mother, wife and 2-year old daughter were escorting their son, husband, and father home. The family was upset because they were unable to see the container that the soldier was in before we left. We were on our way to a major hub at which the family was going to wait four hours for the connecting flight home to Virginia. The father of the soldier told the flight attendant that knowing his son was below him in the cargo compartment and being unable to see him was too much for him and the family to bear. He had asked the flight attendant if there was anything that could be done to allow them to see him upon our arrival. The family wanted to be outside by the cargo door to watch the soldier being taken off the airplane. I could hear the desperation in the flight attendant's voice when he asked me if there was anything I could do. 'I'm on it', I said. I told him that I would get back to him.

Airborne communication with my company normally occurs in the form of e-mail like messages. I decided to bypass this system and contact my flight dispatcher directly on a secondary radio. There is a radio operator in the operations control center who connects you to the telephone of the dispatcher. I was in direct contact with the dispatcher. I explained the situation I had onboard with the family and what it was the family wanted. He said he understood and that he would get back to me.

Two hours went by and I had not heard from the dispatcher. We were going to get busy soon and I needed to know what to tell the family. I sent a text message asking for an update. I saved the return message from the dispatcher and this following is the text:

'Captain, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. There is policy on this now and I had to check on a few things. Upon your arrival a dedicated escort team will meet the aircraft. The team will escort the family to the ramp and plane side. A van will be used to load the remains with a secondary van for the family. The family will be taken to their departure area and escorted into the terminal where the remains can be seen on the ramp. It is a private area for the family only. When the connecting aircraft arrives, the family will be escorted onto the ramp and planeside to watch the remains being loaded for the final leg home. Captain, most of us here in flight control are veterans.
Please pass our condolences on to the family. Thanks.'

I sent a message back telling flight control thanks for a good job. I printed out the message and gave it to the lead flight attendant to pass on to the father. The lead flight attendant was very thankful and told me, 'You have no idea how much this will mean to them.' Things started getting busy for the descent, approach and landing. After landing, we cleared the runway and taxied to the ramp area. The ramp is huge with 15 gates on either side of the alleyway. It is always a busy area with aircraft maneuvering every which way to enter and exit. When we entered the ramp and checked in with the ramp controller, we were told that all traffic was being held for us.

'There is a team in place to meet the aircraft', we were told. It looked like it was all coming together, then I realized that once we turned the seat belt sign off, everyone would stand up at once and delay the family from getting off the airplane. As we approached our gate, I asked the copilot to tell the ramp controller we were going to stop short of the gate to make an announcement to the passengers. He did that and the ramp controller said, 'Take your time.'

I stopped the aircraft and set the parking brake. I pushed the public address button and said, 'Ladies and gentleman, this is your captain speaking. I have stopped short of our gate to make a special announcement. We have a passenger on board who deserves our honor and respect. His name is private XXXXX, a soldier who recently lost his life. Private XXXXX is under your feet in the cargo hold. Escorting him today is Army Sergeant XXXXX. Also, on board are his father, mother, wife, and daughter. Your entire flight crew is asking for all passengers to remain in their seats to allow the family to exit the aircraft first. Thank you.'

We continued the turn to the gate, came to a stop and started our shutdown procedures. A couple of minutes later I opened the cockpit door. I found the two forward flight attendants crying, something you just do not see. I was told that after we came to a stop, every passenger on the aircraft stayed in their seats, waiting for the family to exit the aircraft. When the family got up and gathered their things, a passenger slowly started to clap his hands. Moments later more passengers joined in and soon the entire aircraft was clapping. Words of 'God Bless You', I'm sorry, thank you, be proud, and other kind words were uttered to the family as they made their way down the aisle and out of the airplane. They were escorted down to the ramp to finally be with their loved one. Many of the passengers disembarking thanked me for the announcement I had made. They were just words, I told them, I could say them over and over again, but nothing I say will bring back that brave soldier.

I respectfully ask that all of you reflect on this event and the sacrifices that millions of our men and women have made to ensure our freedom and safety in these United States of America.

With the type of people we have running this country right now ... people who don't believe that we're at war with Islamic terrorism .. .this sure makes you feel better about the rest of us.

  • Thankful
My husband & I pray every day for all our military people.. Keeping God in our hearts help heal with the loss and is is very important for all of us to be Thankful for all our soliders and their familys and friends..GOD BLESS AMERICA
  • See Taking Chance
More support for the movie "Taking Chance". Well told and understated story of a fallen warrior being escorted home. I've seen it three times and still cry.
  • Military escorts
After reading this letter I am sitting her bawling. My son is an Iraq veteran 2x and he is only 20. I think of the 4 other men who died on one of the missions they had(he was the only survivor, and has permanent injury) I am so glad our men/women are fighting the terrorists over there and NOT over here. God bless our military, and God bless you, Neil and crew...
  • The story about the H.R. and the Pilot
being a former Marine, that was just incrediable what the pilot did for that family! That and the respect the people on that plane showed was outstanding! Godbless everyone who helped make that moment possible for that family.
  • Escorts & Chaplins
After reading this story everyone should see "Taking Chance" on HBO. It is a similar story told from the perspective of the escort. My husband's uncle is a chaplin and just finished a tour of duty at Dover AFB. He has said it is a privilege to serve. As a military brat myself I am inspired by the reverence that is shown to each servicemember and their family. This is what all Americans should do, whether you are for or against war, govt, pres or whatever.
  • salute to our warriors
may God bless all our soldiers their families and friends, and us all. we must never forget our soldiers' sacrifices and teach our children what they stand for... our lives as we have gotten to know and enjoy.
  • God Bless
Every soldier that has put a uniform on deserves the same. And to Stan the vietnam veteran, just wanted you to know you have my respect and thanks for carrying "MY FLAG".
  • what a great story
being a vietnam veteran it is refreshing to see respect finally being given to those who lost their lives for freedom. We were not so fortunate in my era.
  • You redeemed yourself, Neil
Awhile back I stated I would never listen to or read your words again as a result of your disrespect in regards to those citizens that demand the truth from the current president.
With this posting, you get a pass.
However, I would strongly recommend that you tone down your disrespectful grouping of those wanting the truth out of this president with those of the so-called 'fringe'. It does NOT matter that he is in office. You can disregard the views & comments of the 'fringe', but don't group them with those wanting the truth and to see all the records currently sealed under unprecedented secrecy.
Failing to follow this advice may not have catastrophic economic impact on you, but will definitely degrade any stock you have in the populace to further tax reform by your model.
  • PGR
As members of the Patriot Guard Riders in Florida, my dad, brother's, and a friend are going to the funeral today of an Army soldier from Clermont who was KIA in Afghanistan last week (I want to go but I'm pregnant and the heat is too much for me). On Friday our friend was part of the escort from OIA to his hometown. Since I knew all of that was going on this weekend this story had me balling at work. I kept seeing the image of that young soldier on the news when Belinda read this story.

God Bless ALL soldiers and their families. So many people take for granted the sacrifice these soldiers and families make every day. Millions more people do not take it for granted and will NEVER let others forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
  • The airline was Delta.
This first appeared in http://acaptainslog.blogspot.com/ on July 4th, 2008, and had a follow-up blog with a photo of the pilot's airline's honor guard called the Patriot Guard, made up of employee volunteers, that they provide for those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. If you look carefully, you'll see that the coffin is resting on a Delta transport carrier.

    Thank you, Delta.
  • Veteran coming home
I heard this read on your program and I lost it, I had to pull over and wipe my eyes, when I got back to work I printed the entire story and put it on the break table, even the hard noses had to wipe a tear from their eye, thank you for printing this, this is one of the things that America is about, and FREEDOM IS NOT FREE, AND WE SHOULD THE THANKFUL FOR OUR FREEDOM AND THE PRICE IT COST TO KEEP IT. THANKS AGAIN.

  • Going home.
    Go with God soldier.
  • Thank you soliders!
I am a nurse and work with veterans in our local community. I thank the Lord for them all! I appreciate those that have served in the past and those that serve now. God Bless that family that had to endure such a tragedy. May they have peace and comfort.
  • last flight
Although this story is endearing to my heart and brought me to tears it cannot be.
This family would not have been let of the plane on the tarmac without a customs check, it doesnt happen, the story ststes their home was virginia, if it was, they would have came in to washington and it wouldnt have been a 4 hour flight, unless this soldier came from somewhere along the pacific rim, at which point we would have news of it and no such soldiers have died along the pacific rim in the past year while on duty.
This is a heartfelt story but I FEEL it is some great writing by an annonymous donor.
  • Enlisted Air Crew Wife
As the wife of an air force enlisted air crew member, I am delighted when I read stories like this. My family is rooted in the military...both my grandfathers were WWII vets, my father was in the air national guard, and my 21 year old cousin is on his 2nd tour in Afghanistan with the marines. My husband's family is the same way. Both his father and grandfathers all served in the army. Thank you for posting this article and thank you to all the veterans have given their lives to protect this country!
  • Last Flight
As the dad of a Navy Combat Corpsman currently serving in Northern Iraq, this article really brings out the tears. My son has had fellow Sailors & Marines killed in combat and I can’t imagine what their family goes through. His wife got a call the other day saying they were involved in an “incident” but not to worry, he was OK. Just broke his nose and a couple of fingers. We are so fortunate to have kids like these.
  • Joyce, Snarky
    agreed...
  • rejoyce
    done
  • Sorry, Snarky
But Neal's opine was hardly political and not nearly as disrespectful of the topic at hand as much of your simliar musings and "snarkiness". Pretty hard to take a positive stand from the Left when you have such gems as Code Pink and the whole Democratic Underground and Daily Kos crowds crowing their anti-Bush, anti-military, anti-America pleasantries when it comes to the fallen.

I see Neals comment as his taking confidence that America as a whole still understands the dangers we face; despite derisions to the contrary. And he appreciates that American sentiment is still alive where it matters.
  • Let it go guys!
This is not the thread for this. Let's just appreciate the spirit behind the letter.

Forget what Neal wrote, just let people focus on the letter.

Just once can we do that?
  • rebutt
why so worked up butt? how truly sad that you cant even imagine a world where a veteran would be so utterly opposed to you and your ilk.

Once again, to defend neal for tagging on his political crap to a story like this makes you as sorry a person as he is.
  • not just a liar..................................
    SNARK......................

I didn't call you a liar, I called you a lying son of a bitch!!!!!
  • rerex
Neal said "With the type of people we have running this country right now ... people who don't believe that we're at war with Islamic terrorism .. .this sure makes you feel better about the rest of us."

Spent many days in uniform. I understand perfectly.

The story is great. Love it. I wish more people had this kind of spontaneous appreciation for our military.

But I also dont appreciate neal tagging on his two cents about the current people in office after sharing such a touching story. It's crap to do that. Cheap crap.
  • Soldiers going home
Along the same line of thought a great - although little known movie - "Taking Chance".
Catch it and you'll see this story in a new light.
  • Fallen Soldier
I cried, thank you for sharing it.
  • Appreciation
My mother forwarded me this as I am stationed nowhere near her or Georgia nor have I been for the past 5 years. As I read this I cried and thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes. I do appreciate the post regardless of the reason. Obviously I will be needing to get satellite radio so I can listen to more of Mr. Boortz as I am unfamiliar with him. Once again, thank you for the post and to all who have served, thank you especially!
  • Snarky, Frank, and Mike
Snarky, first, show me where Neal brought politics into this; his is a statement of fact. This administration turns a blind eye to the dangers in the world. They will have us back to September 10, 2001 in no time. This is a heartfelt recognition of a Soldiers sacrifice. Had you spent a day in uniform, you would understand.

Mike...what would compel a Marine to denounce the recognition for this warrior is beyond me. Regardless of what any Soldier knows what they are "getting into" does not diminish the sacrifice; nor the recognition of those whom they served...the people of this nation. You shame your service, Sargeant, you shame your Corps by your hollow denunciation of this posting about a fellow in arms.

Frank...you are just an assclown. Let your betters have a decent conversation about important matters.
  • LET'S END WITH THIS

you gotta wait a minute. i've got to go to walmart to get a giant sized box of kleenex. these allergy's are getting on my nerves.

i am a Patriot Guard Rider, so i've been to enough funerals to last a lifetime. and i cry at all of them. i mean, i have allergys at all of them.

the latest i saw a poor widow holding her less than two year old baby. i cursed those leaders who got us into this worthless war.

    so Mike, kiss my ass!
  • always a marine?????????????????
MIKE......thank you for your service....did you leave the green machine b'cuz of you political belief or wanted something else in your life...

I read your comment 'bout all the blubbering.....it is because of soldiers like pvt X that so many of us weep. your views are yours and I have mine, so let others have theirs.

I hope you served and remained whole. I kept all my parts(maybe lost a few brain cells)but left some blood behind in the rumble in the jungle in southeast asia.....but it got replaced with bonded alkihall......

again I thank you for your service....even though many didn't appreciate it. those of us that went before you know what you endured!!

  • Great Post
Thank you for posting the pilot's message.
  • Mike on Sentimental Tripe
Mike, what I took out of this story, other than the sacrifice of the young soldier, was the response of every day Americans. Nowadays, with all of us fighting each other instead of the crooks in Washington, it's nice to see a group give honor and respect where it's due without resorting to party lines.

I'm retired from the US Navy after 25 years of service (6 active, 19 reserve). When I was first in the service, Jimmy Carter was president, the draft was over, and everyone in was a volunteer. We were the first generation of the all-volunteer service. Many of us didn't even get the G.I. Bill. People didn't seem to care about servicemen. But that was ok, we were there to serve our country anyway.

Even in peace, men and women sacrifice themselves in the defense of our country. Every time I hear a story like this, I remember those I knew who we lost. I cried today, not just in remembrance for this brave young soldier and his family, but for all the others as well, and for those I knew.

On Memorial Day, I always cry on the inside. This story broke my shield and I openly cried here in my office. Thank you Balinda for your touching rendition of this story. No one could have done it better.

To all of you who were touched by this story, please remember when the wars are over. When the guns are quiet. When we are finally at peace. There will still be a United States Soldier standing guard and a United States Sailor standing the watch. As you sleep, they will be protecting you. As you enjoy time with your family, they will be away from their own, protecting you. They will never ask for your appreciation or gratitude, so when you do show it, it is a gift greater than any amount of gold.

You won't see me waving the flag on our next national holiday. I carry the flag with me ever day. It is part of my heart and my soul. While you are waving the flag please remember this young brave soldier and those who sacrificed before him. Please remember the families who have lost. Please remember the sacrifices the survivors of war have made as well. All who are touched by it, carry it with them to the end.

But whether you remember or not, know that I will. My military brothers and sisters will.

May God Bless all of you, and may God Bless America.
  • My son was brought home much the same way
My Son was KIA in Iraq 2-24-08. He was flown to Houston TX in a large airliner and then home to us in Ardmore Oklahoma. The aircrew of the small jet did a fantastic job and there was no one who took their jobs lightly. We have lost a lot of fine people in these wars. The left may never understand the respect that these men and women are given. I think its mere jealousy.
  • True Story
My father is currently an airline pilot for Continental Airlines. He has been apart of and witnessed similar events also. Great story.
  • rebuttcharliepoppa
    Wow. Thanks.

    Even more disgusting than Neal.

I'm called a liar and I'm accused of inserting politics simply because I called neal out on it.

    pretty pathetic...
  • Thank you
    Here's my 2 cents!

    I also teared up.

I offer my condolences to all that have lost loved ones in the service to our country.
Neal, Donna and especially Belinda...thank you very much for reading this.
I try and thank military men and women whenever I see them.

Recently, after going to the Georgia National Cemetery, outside of Canton, to bury my wife's uncle for his service in WWII our family decided to stop and eat at a local restaurant after the memorial service. After our meal, my young son and I headed to the car. There was a group of National Guard men and women outside dressed in fatigues. I walked by and then turned around to go back and thank them for their service and our freedom. I shook every one of their hands. I could feel their gratitude. My son looked up at me in awe. As we walked away I explained to him that we have a volunteer military that fights daily for our freedom. As we reached the car, a young lady (dressed in fatigues) from that group ran up to us and handed us National Guard caps. I said it wasn't necessary. She insisted and thanked me for the kind words. My son and I wear those beautiful red, white, and blue caps proudly.

Simple acts of sincere kindness mean so much to the military. We should all try give them the respect they deserve!

Thanks for all the work you and Donna do for our soldiers.
  • What a difference forty years makes
In 1969, such receptions were rare. Bags of excrement were thrown at returning servicemen in many places. Most were draftees but all took an oath to defend the Constitution and not to serve a president. I suspect snarkybird is no veteran.
  • I just got back from Afghanistan a few weeks ago. The fact that people will do this for my friends that come home on their shields means a lot.

Thanks for telling the story, Neal.
  • Makes me recall this story....

  • Our Fallen Soldiers
    Great job Belinda!

I went to a military funeral last summer for a soldier killed in action in Afganistan. 13 died the day he did last summer. The military escorts, motorcycle escorts and the county police did a great job with the service. I cannot express enough gratitude for our fallen soldiers honoring their service to our nation.

    Thank you for posting this.
  • To Frank at 10:41
So what you are saying is that for the past how many years, Iraq was the BAD war and now Afghanistan is a good warcause it's Obama's? Pay attention fool, yes troop levels are being brought down in Iraq but being raised in Afgh.
  • Sentimental Tripe
Sorry - I can't agree with all of the blubbering here.

First of all, I was (some say, still am) a Marine. MOS 0341, Sgt.

This young soldier knew what he was getting into, he was not drafted but instead volunteered. Quit mourning him so much.

And if he died in Iraq, then wasted his life on probably the most pointless government enterprise in the history of this counry.

Drop the tears and get back to fighting against Obaman and his socialist agenda.
  • lying sum bitch.........
Snarkybird.......you are a poser, and a lying son of a bitch....you never served.

the men and women in uniform do not serve the president....they serve their nation. they have a code to follow. honor to a warrior is as important as life, not only theirs but that of their comrades in arms.

    you have no honor!
  • A Fallen Soldier: Followup
FALLEN SOLDIER, THE REST OF THE STORY
    http://www.acaptainslog.blogspot.com/

My post, “Fallen Soldier”, received thousands of views this past weekend. I am writing this post to tell you what happened after that flight and some things I have just come to know.

After the family was taken off the aircraft, they were immediately escorted down to the ramp and the cargo door. I found out last week that the team of escorts that met the aircraft to assist the family, are employee volunteers. These employees come from all areas of the airline for the single purpose of giving a fallen soldier the honor, respect, and dignity they deserve during their final journey home. I am proud to tell you that the corporation I work for unconditionally supports the efforts of this group of volunteers.

They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders and have all volunteer teams in Boston, Atlanta, Detroit, Norfolk, Salt Lake City, and Seattle. The Atlanta team has special jumpsuits made by a uniform supplier, displaying a military seal on the back. The team members render honors along with the military escorts and pay last respects to deceased service men and women as they are transported through the airport. Most volunteers are former service men and women or have family who are or were in the military. They have flags and when possible present a commemorative medallion on behalf of my company to the soldier’s family with the inscription: “We will not forget their sacrifice.”

That's quite a story. At a time when there is so much happening to make me question the future of our nation, it is good to hear that good things continue to happen in "real" America. Thanks for knowing enough to add this to your blog today. Thos of us who have served appreciate the support.

Seems to me you're the one who inserted politics into this. You're a sad bag of cheese whiz...

BTW, snark-a&&, go ahead and report me to the reichstag..I mean White House..I also disagree with the healthcare bill..
  • rebigg
Neal could have just posted the story. That would have been great. It would have been the honorable thing to do. Service men and women server the president - democrat and republican.

But, Neal couldn't leave it there. He had to use a great story of what I am sure was both liberal and conservative applauding a fallen service member, their service, their family, and the service members with them and twist it at the end to be a political commentary.

That is wrong. It's disgusting. To defend it puts you right there with him.
  • Oh man.....
I'm sitting at work trying to keep from blubbering like a baby.

    Damn (and thank you)
  • blessed
Didn't get to hear it but definately worth the read.

Now, Snarkychicken. I thank you for your service and for fighting for this country, but to take time to distort this and make it about bambi exemplifies the typical left and your lunacy.

I really don't see how anyone can give any credence to anything you post in the future.

Just had to get that off my chest...

I so much more to say but afraid the webwench won't post it.

    Neal, Belinda

Thank you so much for posting this. With everything that is going on rarely do we hear of these actions.

I missed hearing Belinda read this on the air, and cannot imagine her being able not break down.
  • fkaner@comcast.net
Just think, if we hadn't been lied into a war of choice we wouldn't have to read these sad stories. Bush, the man that on giving!
  • Great job, Belinda
I only caught part of this on the radio, so I didn't know quite what it was all about. I've just now read the whole thing, and I gotta say Belinda did a great job reading it. Thanks Belinda, Neal and Donna.

And thanks to all those serving and who have served in our Armed Forces.
  • I've Laughed At A Lot Of What Boortz Has Written I've Never Cried
It doesn't matter if Snopes confirms or refutes this tale. I choose to believe it is true. It's horrible that kids like this have to die so that man in the White House can ride in his big jet.
  • Agree, see "Taking Chance"
Netflix, rent it, buy it, whatever you need to do to see it, watch "Taking Chance".
  • Wonderful Story
Heartfelt and emotional for sure. Thanks to all those who put aside their worries and problems and stand for a moment in respect for those that protect our freedom - and for the families and friends of those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. If you have not seen the HBO moving "Taking Chance" try to view it as it is a similarly moving story based on a true event from the eyes of the military escort.
    Thanks for sharing
  • wow
Neal, too bad you dont count among them.

To use a story like that to jab at our president.... cheap.

no wonder you had to beg for votes.

    that is just disgusting.

you dishonor their service with something like that.

I am a veteran and to have you take a wonderful story like that as a means to make a political point makes me ill.
  • Taking Chance
There is a very similar movie about this that was released by HBO called "Taking Chance" starring Kevin Bacon. This is one of the most touching tributes to a fallen soldier I've ever seen and I'm still floored it came out of Hollywood. This is a must see.
  • Fallen Soldier
I just have this one thing to say... I may not have had the guts to join the military, but I have the nuts to cry when I hear a story like the one that was read on your show today. I usually turn the radio down when I go through a drive-thru so I can concentrate on business, but when I heard Belinda reading this story I actually turned it up so anyone around me could hear it. As I got on the road to continue home, I thought I would have to pull over because my vision was becoming so impaired with tears I almost became a hazard. I want to tell you thank you for airing that story and to tell Belinda for reading that story, but most of all I want to thank the fallen soldier and his family for the willingness to sacrifice their lives as defender and as the support system for that soldier. I may not have been trainde to fight for my country, but I am American enough to support and thank them for MY FREEDOM!
  • Fallen Soldier
After serving in the Army for 27 years, letters and comments makes me so proud to have served and to live in a Country as great as ours. I can not help but to get choked up and have to wipe tears away.......Thanks for all you do
  • Respect, Love and Graditude
Belinda you are a true professional and a real trouper. I am positive his family and each vet appreciates what you, Neal and THE QUEEN has done in the past BUT:

You're special and your blessing are great and are coming in spades for this one.

May God hold the family in HIS HANDS forever

    God Bless
  • Belinda
I don't know how she read that out loud!!! I couldn't listen, but then had to read it.

wow this restores my faith in America
  • I know I came close to crying a couple of times when I had read and heard this. My father and grandfather were in the Navy, and if I were not disabled I would have joined them as being in a Navy Man. I wish to extend my condolences to the families of those who lost servicemen in the war since 2001 and thank those who are fighting now for doing their part in defending our country

  • Bringing Our Fallen Soldier Home
    Mr. Boortz;
As a veteran and proud father of a US Army Ranger, all I can say is Thank You for posting this letter. It took me 4 times to read it. Hearing Belinda reading it tore me up. God Bless all the families of our brave young men and women of our military forces. May the fallen rest in peace.
    God Bless You and Your Staff Mr. Boortz;
    Jim Guiney
    US Naval Seabees NMCB-74
    1980 - 1984
  • Damn Neal!!!
This had me sitting in front of my office with tears in my eyes. I had to sit in the parking lot until I regained my composure. Being a former member of the Armed Forces this really hit home! The sacrifices are real...God Bless them all for their service!
  • Fallen Soldier
Powerful...I was doing everything I could to hold back my tears.
  • very moving
Well, I got a good cry out the way for today. Thanks for sharing that Neal. God bless that brave soldier and his family.
  • The escort.
Remember, most Airline pilots are former military themselves. They always think "There, but for the Grace of God, go I."

    A very nice gesture.
  • Fallen Soldier
Appears to have been posted on 7/4/2008 on a blog called "Captain's Log". There is a follow up to the story there as well. Great piece. My eyes are still watering. God Bless our Troops and their Families!

  • American soldiers are heroes
Thanks for sharing that, Neal. Brought tears to my eyes.
  • LET'S END WITH THIS ...
    Thank You
  • Let's End with This
Mr. Boortz, this is the MOST touching letter I have heard. It's taking everything I have in me to not cry in front of everyone I encounter today. My heart goes out to the Soldier's family and I hope I meet the Soldier in heaven.
  • "Let's End With This"
I was crying my eyes out by the time Belinda finished reading this. thanks for sharing.
  • LET'S END WITH THIS
Damn it Neal, that was just unfair. Now I'm sitting at my desk with tears in my eyes. You simply can't explain this - people either get it or they don't. If they don't then no amount of explanation will do.
  • Airplane story
I pray that it is true, as it shows that we still have AMERICANS in the country that respect people that have made the ultimate sacrifice for their freedom, and they might actually ACT in ways that will keep their freedom.

First comment in the artcle:"I don't know if this story is true or not, but it sure is good!"
May Neal could share some stories with us about his time in Marine Recon in Nam,how about it Neal?
  • Hero
I actually had to stop reading this twice to hold back tears. I cry about 3 times a year, today was one.

    Thank you Private X.
  • Let's end with this
Good Job Neal. I am an airline pilot, and can vouch for stories such as this,as they have happened to fellow aviator friends of mine. God bless that family, and crew.
  • Neal, for what it is worth
...I was witness to a similar incident at the Charlotte airport. My flight arrived a little late and was taxiing to the gate when the pilot made an announcement asking passengers to remain in their seats while the escort team (NCO and an Officer) deplaned to effect the transfer of the Soldier. Also deplaning with the team were two civilians...my assumption was that they were relatives. Everyone did stay seated and some whispered and offered words of support to the party as they deplaned, there was no clapping...just a very respectful silence and some sniffles.
  • Enough Said
May God Bless them all and watch over them!
  • My dad had a similar experience as a passenger on a flight to Kansas City recently, and the crew made the same request.
  • wow
This had me crying. Mad dad, brother, uncles, and grandfathers were all military. It's nice to see that some Americans still respect what the soldiers do for us.
  • Remains
People need to watch the HBO movie, "Taking Chance" with Kevin Bacon. It is the story of a Marine escorting a fallen soldier. A must see!

Goes right along with this letter.
