HIGHER INSURANCE PREMIUMS ... FOR TWITTER USERS?

There is a movement happening in the UK right now. Insurance companies are considering the idea of raising insurance premiums for anyone who uses social networking sites. This includes sites like Facebook or Twitter. They say premiums could rise, even if only your children are on social networking sites. Why? Because burglars are using the sites to "shop for victims" ... keeping track of when you are on vacation, home addresses, birthdays, etc.

The question here is whether or not the insurance regulations in the UK will allow insurance companies to compete on something like this. The private market can take care of asinine ideas like raising premiums on Facebook customers. Let some company try this, and another company comes along and steals their customers. All you need is competition. Unfortunately, competition is poison to governments. We'll see what happens.

  • @FoxyRob What are you doing posting comments?
"No, it means your not a self-involved twit who feels the need to blather on endlessly about nothing. I don't tweet either

But...posting frivilous comments on a website are NOT blathering endlessly???
  • David in Durham NC
This former school band geek is making a living playing his instrument, but then, I graduated with 51.50 credits, and we only needed 41, The extra ten came from doubling up on science, advanced math, and vocational classes, and from taking summer school (voluntarily) every summer in high school.

No, it means your not a self-involved twit who feels the need to blather on endlessly about nothing. I don't tweet either

the reason the trolls are out is......you didn't use the lotion that makes the itch go away.......it just sits on a tree branch and craps on ya...
  • wha.................
great idea.......if you tweet you pay...if you don't you get free medical....
  • reidonttweet
you're essentially saying "I'm completely out of touch with mainstream media"

so, depending on your industry, may or may not be a good thing...

    you betcha!
  • Health care to be taxed?
If the Fair Tax became law would all the money you spend on health care; from band-aids to your monthly premiums be taxed at the 23-30% rate?
  • I Don't Tweet
I recently made a new resume and added a section that says "I don't have a Facebook, Myspace or Twitter account and have never sent a text message in my life."

    Good reactions so far.

My employer laid me off because of the economic downturn.

Due to the poor economy, I am forced to get a new job... I just can't wait for the free healthcare stuff - I will save so much money!
  • oh
i thought that the insurance companies were raising the premiums because the users of twiiter we're too young to notice something like that. i mean, what's the average age of somebody twittering? 14-20?

oh, i forgot. neal's a twitter. never mind.
  • Dang
The moron trolls are out in force this morning.
  • Academic Credit for Sports
I am not sure how that's any different from giving academic credit for band or theater. Not many athletes are going to make a living playing sports, but not many HS clarinet players will be earning their living playing an instrument either.
  • oh sure
insurance companies could never impose ridiculous risk to daily activities because of the magical power of competition!

yeah right. that might apply for auto insurance...maybe. only because it's easy to switch. but even so, most people bundle policies to save more money and dont even know what risks are assigned to them for their premiums.

but that's only because the magic of competition is protecting us from any kind of crazy insurance policies!

    good one!
  • Raising Premiums
Insurance companies are raising premiums??? Is this even a shock to people in the 19th century? Thanks for the headlines republicans, way to stay in the US government before cars were even popular.
