SHOOT AROUND

Just some quick short attention span comments on the current crisis in government here in what may not be for much longer the greatest nation in the world.

  • Having begun a story of the Cloward-Piven Strategy, I now strongly believe that many Democrats in Washington actually wish to completely destroy our present economy so that they can replace it with an economy mirroring European socialism. Elections have consequences.
  • A good measure of leftist desperation is the frequency with which statist moonbats are now invoking race in the health care battle.
  • Don't know about you ... but I would be relieved to lean that PrezBO is getting wax jobs in the Oval Office. Might divert his attention.
  • PrezBO says that there is a Republican conspiracy to kill health reform. Nope. Got it wrong. There's a Republican conspiracy to prevent the Democrats from nationalizing health care. Different things.
  • Michael Moore says that Congressional Democrats are a bunch of weak, scared, stupid losers. Sooner or later I knew this slob would come around.
  • I wonder how Nike feels about the Lockerbie bomber - a Muslim fanatic who killed 240 people - being released from jail wearing one of their hats. Quite an endorsement there.
  • How many times is Obama going to get away with his "If you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan," It simply isn't true. Either President Hopey-Changey knows it's not true, which would make him a liar; or he doesn't know it's not true, which would make him ignorant. Must be one or the other.
  • New York auto dealers have said "NO" to the cash-for-clunkers plan. Now dealers in New Mexico are backing out too. They're owed more than $3.6 million in New Mexico ... and so far the Imperial Federal Government has written only three checks totally $14,000. And we think this government can handle our health care? What are we smoking out here in the hinterlands? So ... what to do? The federal government will just 86 the program next week. Just to embarrassing.
  • Actually .. it's a good think there are Americans who think these politicians actually care about the state of their health. Someone has to cook the French fries.
  • Have you ever heard of the Veteran's Death Book? You will .. if you listen to the show today. (This is called a tease)
  • Private payrolls are shrinking. Government payrolls are expanding. The government sector, which can use deadly force to achieve its goals, is growing stronger. The private sector, which cannot, is growing weaker. For those who believe that America's greatness comes from government, this would be a good thing.
  • Some political handicappers are saying that the Dems have damaged themselves greatly with their ferocious attempt to nationalize health care. Well, who said that taking over 20 percent of our economy was going to be easy?
  • Global warming? NASA data shows global temperatures are declining. Reports also that there have been 20,000 room cancellations at the site of the next UN climate summit. Can you say flop?

Barack Obama and the Democrats really have to get their story straight. First we have Barack Obama saying that a government health insurance option is absolutely essential in order to properly reform our healthcare system. Then his Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius goes on a talk show and says that a government option is "not the essential element" of reform. Then the White House has to back pedal and say that the White House was still committed to a government option. That leads to today ... now Barack Obama says that Sebelius did not misspeak and that the government option is not the only way to reform the healthcare system.

Obama, speaking to a conservative talk show, said, "We're happy to make sensible compromises. What we're not willing to do is give up on the core principle that Americans who don't have health insurance should get it. That Americans who do have health insurance should get a better deal from insurance companies."

So in the world according to Barack Obama, the imperial federal government should use its power of force to make private insurance companies offer "better" deals so people can afford health insurance. And if the private insurance companies won't do that, then he wants to set up a government option in order to stick to his core principle that "Americans who don't have health insurance should get it."

Note, please ... Obama offers no private sector solutions. Well ... that would be because he's just not a private sector kind of guy.

LET'S NOT GET AHEAD OF OURSELVES

Okay, folks ... I know that the Democrats are screwing up right now and boy do I love to see this happening. Seriously .. the worse the Democrats do the better I like it. This party of big government presents a grave threat to everything that made our country great ... It's fun to see them in turmoil. But let's try to keep in mind that even with all the kicking and screaming, Americans have very short attention spans. Will the current sentiment billowing throughout the country resonate until the 2010 elections? Hardly. This healthcare debate has definitely energized people, but the ability to actually cause any change ... through the voting booth ... is still a long ways away.

That's why I am not getting too worked up over this Cook Political Report that says Democrats could lose as many as 20 seats in the House in 2010.

Charlie Cook says, "These data confirm anecdotal evidence, and our own view, that the situation this summer has slipped completely out of control for President Obama and Congressional Democrats ..."

When might I believe something like this could happen? If the Republicans would stand up and actually offer something meaningful to the debate. There answer is that they do have their own plans out there. Mebbe so. If that's the case, then get some professional PR help to get that message out. When they have something on their own that will drive people to the polls, then I will take notice.

CASH FOR CLUNKERS COMES TO AN END

Well, say AMF to the cash for clunkers. As of Monday the program is history. Unfortunately for Barack Obama and the Democrats, it has left a pretty bad taste in people's mouths. This coincides with a debate over government running our healthcare system. Maybe the administration should have thought about the implications of this program not being a boondoggle, considering its push to run healthcare. Here are just a few of the problems with the cash for clunkers:

--Congress--relying on auto industry forecasts that the program wouldn't have a major effect on moribund sales--deeply underestimated how many people would be lured to dealerships by rebates of up to $4,500. Initially, lawmakers committed just $1 billion, an amount that was burned through in just a few weeks.

--Transportation Department officials, presented with just 30 days to get the program up and running, didn't set aside enough staff or resources and were overwhelmed by the heavy response from consumers. Systems set up to handle and reimburse dealer claims were swamped.

--Government rules to prevent fraud created paperwork requirements that many dealers didn't fully understand.

--Hungry for sales, dealers made Cash for Clunkers deals weeks in advance even though they were advised against it. This created a big backlog the moment the program officially began. And many are still filing bad paperwork that is holding up their claims, despite repeated government attempts to clear up the confusion.

Long story short? The government was ill-prepared and it has little incentive to achieve anything in a timely manner. Take New Mexico, for example. The federal government owes dealers around the state more than $3.6 million. Guess how much it has actually paid? The federal government has only sent three checks totally $14,000. Who knows when or if those dealers will get the money.

Yeah ... and you trust these people to manage your health care.
