YEAH ... WE NEED A DIALOGUE.

Isn't that what they're saying in the aftermath of Obama's little slam against the Cambridge, MA police? I'm getting a bit tired of hearing so many self-described experts telling us how this whole Henry Gates incident should bring us all to the table so we can have a dialogue on race.

Do we need such a dialogue? Oh hell yes we do. But it just ain't going to happen. In this age of political correctness the only possible direction such a dialogue could take would be a forum on all of the terrible things whites have done to blacks and all the things that whites need to do to make things right.

Do white wrongs have a place in the discussion? Absolutely. Racism, bigotry and prejudice ... all part of the equation. But that's not the entire picture ...

Let me share just a few of the things that would be taboo in such a dialogue. First, insofar as Henry Gates is concerned; I doubt very seriously that the dialogue would include any information as to what percentage of home break-ins in and around Boston and Cambridge are committed by blacks. There is no way you might be able to suggest that the police were acting on experience given the fact that blacks are more likely to be involved in criminal activity in the Boston area than whites or other minorities. And you damned sure wouldn't be able to bring the idea that much of the problems experienced by the black community are due to culturalism rather than racism.

Don't even begin to suggest that it might be black culture, rather than poverty and discrimination, which lead to high incidences of black crime. And for God's sake, don't mention the anti-education, anti-learning mentality that suffocates so many young black boys and girls. You know ---- the culture in which a young black teenager is accused of trying to "act white" if he or she so much as raises a hand to ask a question in class.

Yeah ... we need a dialogue. Let' me know when we can get that started. Every time I've ever even brushed those topics lightly on the air it has unleashed charges of racism --- the one sure way to discussing what really might be going on. So ... y'all just get your dialogue going and let me know how it works out for you.

What others are saying

  • dialog this
Why had Gates been to China, a communist state? Had the FN stalinist stayed none of this would have occurred.
  • Re: Who needs "dialogue"? That's not the issue here
First, Amen!!! "Smooth Operator" preach on Brother.

Secondly, It's hard to respect people that lack any respect for themselves. Those who play the victimhood card and race card do not deserve any respect because they certainly lack any self respect. If the black community wants my respect and to be treated equally by me, then the first move they need to make is to reject black culture that Neal refers to and reject the victimhood and start acting like they want respect and equality. Until that time, I have no respect for them nor do I waste my time treating them as an equal.
  • @Everybody
Let's get a few things straight, okay?

First, Gates wasn't arrested for not producing his ID. He wasn't even arrested for yelling racial slurs at the officer. He wasn't even arrested, as some have contended, for continuing to harass the officer outside. He was arrested because, once outside, he was yelling at the people gathering around, trying to incite them. He was no longer yelling at, or even listening to, the officer. He was trying to foment the crowd. For that, he was -- and should have been -- arrested. That is NOT something the officer could have defused by simply walking away.

The other thing we need to get clear is President Obama's comment that the officer "acted stupidly." It's been implied that Obama made this comment on the spur of the moment, without thinking. Nothing could be further from the truth. He was PREPPED in ADVANCE for this question. What he said, he said deliberately and intentionally, for his own reasons.

If the police are called to my house because of a suspected break-in, and they find someone inside the house, I expect them to ask that person who he is. If that person says he lives there, I don't expect the cops to just take him at his word -- no matter what his age or race. I expect them to require proof that he actually is a resident of my house. If they don't, then the cops aren't doing their JOBS.

Asking Mr. Gates for his identification was completely appropriate. There is nothing here that indicates any kind of 'abuse' of power by the officer. The only abusive person in this situation was Mr. Gates.
  • @Me
"Disorderly conduct is a crime, Mike. Your agenda is showing."

Try reading the Mass statute on disorderly conduct and shoehorn Gates' behavior into that. I'll wait.
  • wht not apoligize
Why is it BO can go overseas and apoligize to other countries for all the wrongs America has supposedly done, but when he makes a stupid comment about something he admittedly does not have all the facts about he can't be man enough to apoligize for his own stupid comment?
  • dialogue
We would not even be having this discussion if Dr. Gates only had Broadview/Brinks security. His neighbor would have known it wasn't a break-in because only WHITE GUYS commit those crimes!
  • Tests - Joyce/Burley
I have a 4th grader and a 2nd grader in the govt school system, who I have to fight with everyday to teach my children. Govt schools teach to 60% of the class. 20% is above the grade and 20% is below the grade and they both get left behind. I know this, I have one of each. My second grader scores above average on these "tests" but because of the scores has been taken out of programs designed to help him. The only problem with that, he can't even read at his grade level. So BS to the tests. My other child is so bored with his instructions that even in his advance class there is no challenge. I am up to my ears in the govt schools BS and the those I deal with know it but it is the masses only not the special ones to be considered.

    Testing
Joyce, I agree to a point. The problem with today's standardized testing is that they place so much emphasis on the test scores that teachers spend more and more time preparing the kids for the tests themselves and less and less time on the fundamentals of the course material. That tends to skew the test results even more. That explains your question earlier about how people who can't read their diploma could still earn one.
    By Burley

And if we test our teachers, we may eliminate some of that "just pass them" attitude. We have to be able to do something, all too often the arguments against standardized tests are that they are unfair which is dumbing down crap. All students can learn, it's a matter of matching the method to the student.

  • Who needs "dialogue"? That's not the issue here.
That's like holding your breath waiting for Obama to man up and act like an American…not a “black” American.

    It's not gonna happen.

It’s in Obama’s nature to identify with black victimhood, for to do otherwise would alienate him from his base of support. Once guilt-filled whites who voted for him realize they wasted their votes for a man who inherently lies, cons, and refuses to be accountable, the sooner America, and her citizens can reestablish a path to equality.

  • Tragic Questions
Now we can continue to trash both Dr. Gates and Sgt. Crowley but this incident seems to be out of place (from what is reported about both of them)for their personalities and more of a case of hot tempers getting control of the events.

Dr. Gates seems a moderate when it comes to race relations. I base that both on his writings and watching his excellent series African American Lives. Watch the segment when Dr. Gates talks to Morgan Freeman who confronts the reality that his Caucasian great, great, great grandfather really loved his Negroid great, great, great grandmother and his mixed race sons.

The lesson is that perhaps when if dig back far enough into our own families histories, we will find that we are not so much different. The old saying “walk a mile in my shoes” applies today weather you are an intercity “African American” or a “white” suburbanite. The question becomes how many of us are searching for someone else to blame for our inadequacies?

Another question is this a real life version of the movie Crash? Is everyone wrong?
  • Testing
Testing is not teaching, it is a measurement of what was taught. How else are you going to determine a student has learned anything? I don't understand how anyone can be against testing. And yes, it is the fault of the teacher's if they don't recognize that a student has a problem with testing and doesn't do anything to help them. Bad testers can be helped. But they have to be recognized first.

  • @Mortimer
DC spends more per student (13k) than any other school system...need I say more?
I am not whining...you are. I just know that if the blacks want to progress they have to do it with whatever resources they have...and a huge step in the right direction would be to stop always the playing the race or victim card. if you want to go into those communities to help then knock yourself out...just don't do it with my tax dollars.
  • What's to talk about?
I'm a white guy. I live in the suburbs, but I work downtown in an office building mostly rented to the city government. I work for a non-profit, not the government. It is my observation that most of the city's employees in this building are black. When I have the temerity to get on an elevator with these same city employees, I get sneers and looks that suggest I have a load in my drawers, even though it has been less than an hour since my last shower. As far as I know, I have not intentionally wronged or discriminated against any of these people. In fact, not that they would know it, but I was one of the white kids who got bussed out of his neighborhood during the days of integration, and I was one of the white kids who went to a state college that saw its standards lowered to accommodate affirmative action enrollment. So, I have personally participated in a form of social reparations. And from my standpoint, I have done my bit to even the scales, thank you very much.

So, when I asked a black co-worker of mine why my presence elicits such a violent reaction, I am told that these folk probably think I have a government job that "belongs" to the black community. I suspect there may be some validity to that, but I also suspect that it goes somewhat deeper.

I was not thrilled when Obama won because of his politics, not his race. And I was pretty sure when he was elected that no white man with the same thin resume could have gotten the job. Nonetheless, I did not hold his being black against him. The people have spoken, so he gets his turn at bat.

However, now that he's decided to weigh in on this issue and summarily decided that the white cop acted "stupidly," I'm not so sure my feelings about him haven't retreated. I don't think his position has helped race relations. Certainly not for me.

I'm tired of feeling like the only one who's giving the other guy the benefit of the doubt. I'm tired of feeling apologetic for sins my ancestors may have committed 140+ years ago. At what point do I get credit for attempting to be part of the solution instead part of the problem? Now that my president has suggested once a white boy, always a white boy, what's the point? If blacks want to be seen as equals, then it seems to me they need to let go of the idea that every white person is out to deprive them of something. You want equality, then you don't get special treatment or consideration. And you need to let your most visible spokesman know his words have consequences in that regard.
  • Building bridges
My son and I talked a bit about this after church yesterday. He told me he heard a black Atlanta preacher say to blacks that there could not be dialogue until we all learned forgivness. He said, "Some people need to crawl down off their cross and use the wood to build a bridge." I thought that was well said. By the way, my son told me also that that preacher has been ostracized by his community. Do you think it's because he mentioned God? As Rush said one day, "Some people worship their political party ahead of their God."

Disorderly conduct is a crime, Mike. Your agenda is showing.

Thank you for making your belief system clear when you brilliantly say people posting in here would do a 180 on their opinion of Gates if he were white. How sad that you think everyone thinks like you.
  • re: Joyce's 11 AM response to Mortimer
Sorry, Joyce, but i disagree. If a student cannot pass a fair test, it is almost always the student's fault, not the teacher's. Having taught at the University level, I was amazed by the lack of reasoning capacity of many students that were Juniors at a better-than-average University.
  • I think we should all....
...read Owen's post again. He makes the most coherent point of all.
  • I love it!
My younger brother and his wife are big time liberals. They voted for Obama because he would mark the end of racism in America. Their son, (my nephew), is a cop. He thinks Obama's just another race pimp. "Teach your parents well".
  • black people
i can accused of racism in the past. but i explained that i was disappointed in blacks, not that i hated them. i used to tell black kids, who i couldn't understand a word they said, "you been here 400 years and can't speak the language"

You both are the reason we cannot have serious dialogue around this issue. I have a lot of respect for Neal and believe there are many here who responded to this blog that really want resolution and repair around this rather sensitive issue. It is painfully apparent that this is a joke to you, or your hatred based on "genetics" runs so deep that nothing anyone says will sway your thought process.

Please keep your dialogue where it belongs. The last time I checked, Boortz's blog was not the gutter.
  • Joyce and Betty
    Betty-

Political correctness is part of America's educational woes, but only a part. The larger problem is simply that critical thinking and knowledge of particulars and not just generalities isn't encouraged. At all.

    Joyce-

Standardized testing is a wretched way to teach kids. I'd love to explain my position further but the Internet probably isn't the best forum for that kind of thing, and besides, I can see I'm in the minority here. I'll bow out and let the rest of you enjoy your self-affirmations.
  • We might need a dialogue, but we're going to get lectures.
    Wake me when it's over.
  • obamas dialogue and racial profiling.
Obamas presented himself up as the "great uniter" will running for president and as he took the reins of power but his own dialogues have divided the people of this nation more than ever. While at election time there was nearly 50/50% for and against him now it seems like its 15/20/32/30/3%.I guess you keep a crisis going by dividing up not uniting.he's only succeded in uniting MORE AGAINST HIM. QUESTION:WHO KEEPS RACIAL PROFILING ALIVE? Is it the police? nope. Is it the scared whites? yeah but why are they scared? Is it the black community? Nope, generally they understand that "profiling" is a nessesary tool .Its the entertainment industry. The music industry portrays and glorifies the worst elements of blacks and presents that "profile" to the world as black culture.Hollywood also did its best to convince young blacks AND whites the gang-banger/thug/blingbling was a lifestyle to die for. All while confirming the reasons for fear and profiling to average middle american. The Entertainment Industry does more of a diservice to our country, our image here and abroad than any politician, news media or war can. Most of the world's people get all their image of us from Hollyweird and MTV. If I did that I might hate and fear us too and join the moslims in cursing the "great satan". Unfortunatly as a Christian MY religion says I'm not to destroy my enemy but to resist evil and pray for him.(killing WOULD be easier tho')
  • dial-a-log?????????????????
hell we don't need logs here in the friggin' desert............we need friggin' trees............

yes it is all my fault..............I am related to alot of white people and they at one time may have owned a slave or not......however that was 145 years ago.........were any of ya'll around then????

I have lived a few decades and to this day I have not had a satisfactory relationship with a negro.....yes I used the n word, nachos is also an n word....on the other hand I have employed folks from the philippines, viet nam, mexico and hang on to your hats......america!

the greatest cultural failure in the history of man kind and this country is the 12-18% of our population.......... negroes!

now tell me who is to blame....you? me? or (code word coming) them???? we (americans) have made special accommodations for a minority and it has failed.....we have dumded down the entire set of standards in this country to accommodate 12-18%??????? where does that make sense???????????

so no dail-a-log fo' me.....and I won't have a beer with stinkin' osamabama either......now do a joint wit' him?????
  • gates.
    Gates is a race pimp, with a new book, and he needed some free PR coverage. That's what it's all about, and obama helped out his buddy. Please note below;

From Booker T. Washington made in 1911.
"There is a class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs. There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don't want the patient to get well."

I venture to say Mr. Washington would agree this applies to individuals such as professor gates, al sharpton, jesse jackson, jeremiah wright and barack obama. And when bo says reparations aren't enough it's because, if it was enough, the grievances would have to end, so he will bankrupt America, one piece at a time, throwing any and all entitlements he can make up at blacks. Education is not one of them though, which is why he is against home schooling, charter schools and vouchers; because he and other race pimps don't want blacks to know that the KKK are democrats, segregation was the democrats, Jim Crow laws democrats, slavery in general, democrats, and now they pretend to be the saviors for votes so that they can keep them on the welfare plantation. From American Indian woman.
  • Decent education system
Somebody is wrong. We once had a decent education system until political correctness took over. First there was bussing because blacks would improve if they were exposed to whites. Unfortunately the exact opposite happened. Standards were lowered to level the playing field not taking into account that even the poor can learn if they actually apply themselves. My mother was so poor she had to quit school in the third grade because she didn't have any shoes and couldn't go in winter. She actually could read and write (cursive) as they didn't teach printing at that time and she also learned to do basic math with the help of a relative. It burns me up to hear about the pitiful fools that can't read their diploma (how did they ever get one in the first place) The educational system is not to blame other than not requiring personal responsibility. Political correctness and allowing the pity party to continue is the worst problem.
  • Neal's comments
Neal, you are exactly right! They want "dialogue" now that they have been exposed as the black racists they are. Obama made a typical black racist response to a situation about which he knew nothing. Racism cuts both ways!
In this case, there were two racists, Gates and Obama.
  • The only thing racist about this whole thing...
Was the reaction of the Professor and our president. There was no excuse for Gates' behavior toward the cop. That was out of pure bigotry. I was even willing to give Obama his "I don't know the facts and Gates is a friend of mine" line until he took the opportunity to go beyond saying the police acted stupidly to lecturing the country on how the police are all racist.

The first part is fine, only because Obama admitted his own ignorance on the issue and felt a need to defend his friend.

The other part is inexcusable. The only reason for that is bigotry. I'm sorry, but Hannity was 100% right about Wright. His message of hate comes clear through his flock in this case.

Just once, I'd like to see this same racial profiling discussion take place with the following facts involved:

    1) The percentage of minority officers serving in the US.
    2) The percentage of minority arrests by minority officers.

Show me that first, and I'll be willing to discuss racial profiling as a serious issue. Until thing... shove it.

I can't find any of those stats online and those should be easy stats to find. Of course, the facts might dispell a myth. :P
  • slaves
If colored folks had not been made slaves years ago then they would not have the opportunities they have today. I'm just sayin.
  • Cop Professionalism & Gates
If I'm a cop: #1 - my safety #2 - your safety. Cop arrives at the scene of a possible B&E. Needs to secure the scene and sort it out. Having seen Gates' ID, did Gates arrive after a burgler? Was one in the house? Was there danger? Gates, by running his mouth and being uncooperative, was an impediment to the cop doing his. Gates should have been arrested for obstructing official business and no dropping of charges. If the cop had said, "OK" and left followed by a burgler's assault of Gates there would be no end of it.
Gates was out of line. He should be thankful for a professional law enforcement in his city.
  • Mortimer
There is nothing wrong with standardized testing. If some children can't pass them then there is an issue with the teachers, not the tests. And you are right, that problem cannot be fixed with money alone. Teachers themselves should be tested and pay tied to student performance.
  • @Brad
"Gates is a moron and since he's one of BO's friends, it's probably not a stretch to believe he also believes in Rev. Wright's concepts as well."

Really? How much do you really know about Gates? I bet this cop incident the first time you'd ever heard of him. If you actually read proper books you'd know that he's been criticized by black nationalists, that's a disciple of W.E.B. DuBois and not the Nation of Islam. He's a celebrant of black American literature and culture, people like Langston Hughes and Ralph Ellison and Duke Ellington. People who've done far more to enrich American culture than thin-skinned cops.
  • The Anit-Al Sharpton

  • @Jeff
    "your post is pure nonsense..."

    PURE nonsense? How so?

"we have been throwing money at them for years and it never gets better."

Well, I suppose it depends on what you mean here. Who is "them?" What have "we" been throwing money at and how is it being spent? To my knowledge there's never really been a concentrated effort to create a decent educational system. And no, money doesn't equal effort. To truly improve the system you need serious thought, serious attention to detail, etc. It hasn't happened, ever. Instead we have tons of money thrown at education with simplistic, barbaric formulas like No Child Left Behind and standardized testing.

"it is the responsibility of the impoverished to improve themselves not the governments."

No one is saying the government should improve the impoverished. I'm saying the government--meaning us--should work to improve the surroundings and outward material conditions of the inner city, because I (and many others) think doing so would be a net benefit for civil society.

" it is their culture that needs changing and only they can do that."

Then what are you complaining about? Why mention it at all if only they can change their culture? Isn't all your whining about how horrible the blacks are just futile?

One more thing: If my post is beginning-to-end "pure nonsense" then why didn't you address any of my points about Neal's hypocritical love of police authoritarianism?
  • Can't Be Achieved With Dialogue
I agree that little can be achieved here. What we have is a large group of people whose complaint is- we were enslaved by you for 250 years. This is such an oversimplification, but most people are simple.

    Some things to think about:

    - Name one white person today that has legally held slaves and was not punished for it?

    - If you believe reparations is the only way to end the "inequality", who should pay them? White Americans? I can prove my family never owned a slave.
How about black families that recently moved to the US? What about the black slave hunters/traders in Africa? Aren't they or their families 50% culpable, or is that an inconvenient truth?

-Didn't James Monroe offer to repatriate Africans back to Africa? Read about Liberian history.

It should also be noted that many people of African descent are NOT concerned with reparations, chastised by their peers, and are successful. These are people typically labeled as "Uncle Tom" by these reparations types. Many of them are my friends and colleagues who refuse to cry "victim" and have instead been infused by an untiring work ethic.

The only thing that would make these reparations-types happy would be million-dollar extorted payouts of all the white populace, destruction of companies that legally held slaves, and the enslavement of the white populace for 250 years. After all, in this society, two wrongs make a right.

In the end, they would blow the money, still want federal assistance, live in a hooch, and be even more angry that "the man" was successful.

How many TRILLIONS have been spent on welfare programs? These programs have been dismal failures. If these reparations were paid out, I would request reimbursement of these trillions in welfare dollars received by families taking the reparations.

Also, how many "Whitys" have been displaced by "Affirmative Action" programs? Do they have a case for some form of "reparations"?

How about the American Indians? If anyone got royally screwed by Europeans, it was them. They lived across America and now live on reservations on the cruddiest land we could place them on.

Why don't we do this- offer every reparations-type 40 acres and a mule...You know- place all of them on 40 acres, and give them a mule. We can call it the 40 acre reservation. We can place it in the middle of Wyoming. They can even create their own AfricaAmerica nation.

We are past meaningful dialogue on this issue until that big, nasty, "I hate white people" chip comes off the shoulder. You went to the same schools I did. Mom and Dad paid for my lunches while you got yours free (thanks to my Mom and Dad's taxes). I paid my way through College and worked my a$$ off while you had scholarships available because of your skin color and refused to take them. Do me a favor, join society or kiss off!
  • Racism
Let's be honest here...there is much greater levels or racism in the black culture than any other at this point. Watch an episode of COPS, and see how many rednecks get arrested for doing less and ON THIER PROPERTY. Gates is a moron and since he's one of BO's friends, it's probably not a stretch to believe he also believes in Rev. Wright's concepts as well.
  • Dialogue?
    Let's see,

The president "Miss-spoke" on a question at one of his scripted pressers. I don't think so. For some reason the president wanted to say what he said, and he completely miscalculated on how it would be received.

In this White House, all of the press questions are submitted in advance. There is no way the president is going to go this far off message unless he is attempting to misdirect the news cycle away from something more sinister he is up to.

Now the question: "What is he doing that we SHOULD be paying attention to?!!"

Just my paranoia showing through again

  • Reality Sucks
The reality to this situation is that the ‘good professor’ is going to be able to milk this situation within the liberal media and the race baiting community to his monetary and social advantage since he is now the “victim of racism”. Look for his new book in a few months, followed by a made for TV movie.

The sergeant will be driven out of his employment sometime soon, he is now a political liability to his department and every liberal wacko and money seeking race baiter will be after him so they can keep themselves looking relevant and in the news.
  • Dialog?
I am tired of being discriminated against simply because of the color of my skin, for what I appear to be instead of for who I am.

Abolishing bigotry should be higher on everyone's agenda.
  • Post Scriptum
I'm kind of surprised that Boortz (and many of the commenters) aren't more appalled by what happened here. A man who had not committed a crime was arrested for not showing proper deference to the cops. I think people should be polite to cops, but that shouldn't be enforced by BS arrests for "disorderly conduct" that are instantly dropped after the homeowner has been sufficiently humiliated.

Take race out of this. If Gates were a white man who screamed at the cop for having it in for him (as happens frequently), was lured out onto the patio than arrested for disorderly conduct, I have little doubt you guys would be siding with Gates.

Gates is milking it for all its worth, I'll grant. But gates being wrong but doesn't make Crowley right.
  • Dialogue
I think it’s just weak to use the excuse you would not be allowed to bring up Boston’s Black crime stats or black culture as possible causes. So Neal what you are really saying is you give people that much power over you. So for all the people that use the excuse that these talks turn into blame whitey sessions you are just as weak as a black person using the blame whitey excuse, I say stand up speak your mind just be able to support your opinions with accuracy of facts and life experience not just based on feelings and hearsay . Many times what it boils down to is that some people lack the intelligence to dialogue and debate without resorting to personal attacks.
  • Fisking
"First, insofar as Henry Gates is concerned; I doubt very seriously that the dialogue would include any information as to what percentage of home break-ins in and around Boston and Cambridge are committed by blacks."

Or how many are committed by 59-year-old 5' 7" men with canes.

I think Gates acted stupidly. But the more I read from people who actually know the guy and people who've taken his classes, the more this seems out of character.

And I still have an issue with the whole, "why don't you come outside to discuss this" line, which is a cop BS way of having an excuse to arrest.
  • Don't baffle us with statistics
Predictably sad that some folks don't want to face the hard statistics. Some folks paint their own profile and refuse to acknowledge actual root causes. President Obamuppet had no business jumping in on this one.
  • The Gates Affair
Another indication of how our public schools have failed. Public schools merely produce dumb people. To be world-class stupid, arrogant and obnoxious requires an elite private school like Harvard. Just imagine what society will be like when we have vouchers and can begin mass producing them.
  • Tasty Suds
The good "Reverend" Sharpton says it was either racial profiling or abuse of power, standard operating procedure. Gates wants to have the beer to help end racial profiling. This will be an opportunity to grandstand for all but the police officer.
  • Not a dialogue, but a LECTURE!
You all should be aware by now that PBO has lectured us more in 6 MONTHS than any other President in history. It's no coincidence that community organizers learn how to use race as a way to get what they want and all they do is lecture us.

As a hispanic, I have been approached by community organizer organizations that are looking to grow their ranks for the sole purpose of power grab. To them, is all about racism and anything you say will only make matters worse.

Follow the link to the "Peoples' Institute" and you'll se what I'm talking about. http://www.pisab.org/
  • Actions
Actions speak louder than words. When I was a kid, our family of 9 came home from church to find a black man in our kitchen. Dad ran him out the back door and gave chase. A while later, he came back with the man and asked mother to fix him dinner. He was hungry. He was in the kitchen looking for food. His punishment that day was having 7 little kids crawling all over him wanting to play! My lesson that day was to have a dialogue. However, the dialogues need to arise per situation between those involved. No pie in the sky, generalizations, stereotyping... as no two people are alike. That's why we can't get beyond race... or gender... or life style... or religion... There are simply too many factors that make us what we are and make us think and feel the way we do. We can't apply it across the board. That's also why I don't want social issues to be legislated. No one knows what is BEST for me except me... and I can work for what I want and need.
  • Race
If Officer Crowly goes into that room with those two, he will come out the looser, two racist's to the word of a white police officer, how's that work for you?
  • Beer at the White House
Actually, the having a beer part was Sgt. Crowley's suggestion to Obama.

Stacey Burnside, Love it and Amen!
  • @Mortimer
your post is pure nonsense...we have been throwing money at them for years and it never gets better. it is the responsibility of the impoverished to improve themselves not the governments. it is their culture that needs changing and only they can do that.

What? Someone who isnt a wasp is getting news coverage in this country??? It must be that biased media. I am going to go watch the unbiased fox news and then listen to the not-insane Rush while he swallows pills
  • dialogue?
It's kind of like the Muslims. When whitey is gone, then we can have the dialogue.
  • beer at the White House
Obama showed incredibly poor judgement by commenting on that arrest. He's the president of the United States, FFS!

Officer Crowley doesn't want to have a beer with Gates and Obama. Gates is a disorderly f@#$ing aszhole, and Obama is an accessory. The damage is done. Obama needs to drop it. If he wants a beer buddy, he should take Hannity up on his offer. That one would actually go a long way.
  • YEAH ... WE NEED A DIALOGUE.
Every February in Tallahassee we have a week of these so-called dialogs. I gave up attending after a few years because they always inevitably became a "blame whitey" session.
  • Well said
Why can't we have this discussion?

What do you expect from someone who attended Reverend Wright's church and hung around with domestic terrorists for all those years?
  • Just wondering...
I was wondering what percentage of the Indian and Chinese immigrants are college educated and what percentage of the black and white population are college educated. I'll wager there are some uncomfortable results to the race pimps. You see, Ive known a lot of indians and chinese who grew up essentially poor but never complained about "dissenfrenchfrizement" and instead studied long hours to get where they are. Americans are so enamored with porn, beer, sports and American Idolatry that as long as they are well fed and entertained they dont mind wearing the shackles.

They already have. It's called healthcare.

  • I agree and I disagree
Neal, you are 100% right. I am a black female and I was really upset at 1) The race card being used in this case and 2) Obama having ANYTHING to say about it publicly. This type of behavior is as damaging to the cause of “racial repair” as someone tying a noose to my tree!

After reviewing as much as I could about the situation, I am dismayed that people would believe this was a racially-motivated incident. Now, I've seen racially-motivated incidents and this one does not qualify, in my opinion, as one of them. The officer was doing his job and who cares if it was the Harvard Police, if they had proper jurisdiction, etc. From what I’ve read, if someone is trying to unjam a door, it would probably look like they are trying to break in. I understand Mr. Gates was probably quite flustered at the time the officers arrived, but he, and he alone, is responsible for HIS conduct and how he turned an otherwise harmless “Officer, here is my ID. I do live here. I appreciate your coming out.” Into an opportunity to say “your mama”. In my opinion, his conduct was totally inappropriate. Now, cops can sometimes get on your nerves, especially when you’ve done nothing wrong, but I’m not spending 80% of my day chasing the bad guy, so I have to think about it from their perspective.

Now Neal, I believe your depiction of “black culture” is strongly biased. I grew up in a "black culture" and I was taught responsibility for my actions, get good grades in school, go to college, earn a degree and be a productive, responsible citizen. I, instead, feel we should focus some of our energy and ALL of our blame on the American Entertainment Industry Culture, a culture, which has made billions upon billions by taking the most negative elements of American Culture and exploiting it. However, I don't have enough time to discuss this on your blog. :-)

I think it does us all a disservice for whites to continue to get called racists for things that are not racially motivated and for blacks being called "anti-education, anti-learning". Yes, there exists plenty of whites that are racists, as with ANY race. AND there exist anti-education, anti-learning in EVERY race as well. Broad generalizations do nothing more than exacerbate the problem and ultimately get us nowhere.

Yes, Neal. Let's dialogue. Call me!!!
  • Obama'ts idea of dialogue
Obama seems to suffer from diarrhea of the mouth when it comes to apologizing to the world about the U.S. but he seems to keep his lips zipped when it comes to apologizing for himself.
  • Neal,

Are you or are you not a libertarian? What would it take for you to side with a harassed black citizen over a white cop abusing his authority? Would you object to calling the police "stupid" if they arrested you in your own home for no reason aside from mouthing off (which, last time I checked, isn't a crime)?

Or is libertarianism just a white thing?

As for evil black culture making Teh Blaques evil, I think that for most liberals the argument runs like this: NOBODY denies that the majority of crime is committed by blacks and that there are hideous problems in inner-city black culture, like the anti-intellectualism you mention. Where liberals differ from rightists like yourself and your praise-chorus is that they think poverty is what causes this anti-intellectual, crime-prone culture. Alleviate poverty and you'll probably alleviate the crime and the anti-intellectualism. Give people options (like public libraries, better schools, housing that isn't horrific and inhuman in both its architecture and its conditions, etc.) and most of them will choose learning, hard work, and obeying the law.

No abstract ideological fanaticism about "the free market" and "ZOMG BIG GOVERNMENT IZ TEH SUCK!" can change the fact that people simply behave better when they're given hope. You and your ilk want to continue the cycle of hopelessness that so many urban blacks are condemned to, al in the name of a sanctimonious free-market ideology.
  • Not much more to add...
Boortz hit all the points well. It's simply amazing how people act as if they want change and yet are too afraid or too sensitive to discuss these issues in an adult manner.

As I've said before, kiddie gloves. Political correctness is among the absolute worst things that have happened to the United States.

Keith is right too, it will be a monologue.
  • Dialogue...
I'm so sick of hearing "we need a dialogue on race!" The only thing you ever hear we need a dialogue on is race. What the hell is a race dialogue anyway? What... do we sit David Duke and Louis Farrakhan down at the table over tea and talk about how much they hate each other until it's all out of their systems?

What we need is an EPILOGUE on race. And it starts something like this: "We hold these truths to be self evident that ALL men are created equal..."
  • Dialogue
You nailed it this time Neal. Any dialogue will consist of once again blaming whitey for all the problems. I, for one, am sick of it.
  • you must want a dialogue
you must want a dialogue or you wouldn't be carrying this old news bit around. if you don't want it, just ignore it. there other news out there. oh, i forgot. you're a talk show host. you need to get peoples ire up. never mind. damn, them blacks!!!!
  • No Dialogue
Thank you Keith you have summed up any future "conversation" about this issue correctly. I was just too bad the ‘good professor’ went "Cynthia McKinney" on the officer and the officer did not stay professional enough to back down on the confrontation after he accomplished his duties. As for the President, he need to realize that he is no longer a Senator and that what comes out of his mouth will impact a lot of people.

The fact is that there will not be any dialog on this matter. Sgt. James Crowley’s current distinguished career has now come to an end, since he and his department will be hounded until he is gone. As for the ‘good professor’ Gates he is now a “hero victim” among his race baiting peers.
  • Next Generation
Until the Sharptons of the world are gone, we won't accomplish much. Although his niece is just about as narrow minded.
  • 100% Correct
Neal hit the nail on the head with this one and I don't care if it ticks people off. It's the truth. And if you don't want to believe a white guy like Neal, then listen to Bill Cosby and Bill Cosby was vilified for saying what he said when talking about the problems in the black community. The thug culture that is magnified in Hip Hop music is a major problem. Hip Hop and Rap music glorifies gangs as well as disrespect to authority, it glorifies drug use, violence, and it degrades women. All you have to do is look at the prison system. I'm a corrections officer. I have 124 inmates on my housing unit(which is a drug treatment unit). Out of the 124 inmates, currently 95 are black. That's 77%. And that is just 1 housing unit. There are over 3,500 inmates incarcerated at the prison in which I work and the percentage of blacks is somewhere around 60+%. Blacks make up approximately 13% of the population yet based on numbers by the U.S. Justice Department, for every 100,000 black males in this country, approximately 4,700 are incarcerated. They all can't be in jail because whitey didn't have anything better to do. Obama wants to make stupid comments about a disproportional amount of blacks are subject to racial profiling instead of looking at the 800lb. gorilla in the room that is the fact that blacks commit a disproportional amount of the crime. The numbers don't lie people. And it isn't going to change until the black community changes. I feel sorry for the millions of blacks who are trying to make something of themselves but as Neal says, thanks to the thug mentality, any time a black kid tries to do well in school they're mocked by their own. Until the black community recognizes the real problem, blacks are going to continue to be vilified in the community as a whole is going to wear it. And calling Condi Rice and Colin Powell "not real black people" because they dare to be black and Republican doesn't help either. Well, Powell supported Obama so I guess he's black again. But you get my meaning. Again, the facts don't lie.
  • No one's saying
What I don't hear anyone saying is that they were both wrong. They were both wrong, the professor should have never have behaved like the child he did and the officer at the end of day didn't have to place him under arrest. He could have made a better decision.
  • No dialogue
Don't do it - the only way this ends is by blacks telling whites how much money they owe them.

It's a total waste of time and one that can't be taken seriously. Minority scholarships to technical and state colleges outnumber traditional education grants 2-1. If they want to advance themselves - let them do it on their own merit.
  • Dialogue/Summit
I am really tired of this story and have decided on my own opinion.

What troubles me now is if Obama can make such simple statements that draw such criticism because:
    He didn't know the facts

He spoke without thinking about what he was saying

He is running high on emotions

He has a chip on his shoulder

If he can botch such a simple situation resulting in such a severe impact, what is he going to say when talking with people that are more important in the world than some college professor.

What is the hell is his dialogue going to be when he talks to the Russians, the Iranians, North Korea, Israel?

Now he is back peddling, he regrets it, I misspoke, I didn't know the facts, he needs his speech makers to help him save face with America.

Let's all get together and have a beer? Is that going to fix everything?

If I was the cop I would have said no thanks.
  • Dialogue?
I agree. A dialogue on race wouldn't be bad. It might actually accomplish something useful.

What Obama and the left really want, though, is a monologue. They want to go through their script without any opposing views.
  • Race Dialogue
Seeing as how Obama's half white/half black, maybe he should go oppress himself.
