THIS IS HOW WE DEBATE IMPORTANT POLICY

As this debate over the nationalization of health care grows more intense you can expect the Democrats to turn to their usual tactic of demonizing the opposition. This will not be a normal argument over whether or not our system of health care should be run by the private sector or by government. It will turn into a debate over who wants folks to get medical care, and who doesn't. I'm told that Obama sycophant Montel Williams has weighed in now with his theories on Republican health care. He says that Republicans would "just shoot" people who need emergency room care.

So .. that's how the left wants to argue this? Instead of a debate over the benefits and efficiency of private vs. public sector health care initiatives, let's just say that Republicans want poor people to be shot when they need emergency medical care. Before too long you'll be hearing this from more and more statists. They'll be telling you that conservatives don't want poor people to get medical care so that they'll just die and go away. Watch. Let's see if I'm right.

What others are saying

  • Mexico is the answer
Well, those of us who live near the border will just get across to get all our private medical taken care of.
  • Montel the moron
Montel lost all credibility with me long ago when he started promoting Sylvia Browne, that purported psychic who still refuses to submit to any tests to prove her so-called abilities.
  • Montel
Yes Montel, there ARE enough body bags.
  • Reply to Stiles
"Should Palin get more dresses on the government dime?" Sheesh...the dresses weren't on the "government dime" - they were paid for by the RNC. I know there are some who believe that all money belongs to the government, and it just lets us keep some of it, but that's now how it works.
  • "This Whole Debate Is Irrational"
If we waited until there was a bill that has been voted on, there wouldn't be much of an opportunity to debate, would there? We'd essentially be trying to sway the opinion of one man, and I'm thinking he's not inclined to veto whatever comes out of congress.
  • I just finished translating Montel's tape
"If y'all don't play by Obammy's rules then I'll just take my ball and go home."

Once a thumb sucker, always a thumb sucker.
  • Re: Mike Don't wealthy business people do the same?
Some people vote for those that will give them something.

Others vote to be left alone – to keep what they've earned.

How can someone be said to be 'getting something' when all they want is to KEEP the fruits of their labor?
  • Mike
"Don't wealthy business people do the same? They even have lobbyists which they pay to assist them. Yeah only poor people vote in their interests."

No, Mike, rich people tend to vote for the candidate who will take the least. There's a difference.
  • Mike
Yep, that can be true, especially with GS; BUT for the most part rich people (corporations technically don't vote) are asking/voting for things that will result in more jobs, better technology, etc.

If we really wanted to make some significant voting/campaign reform, we should do away with corporate contributions. Since they don't vote, we shouldn't have a problem eliminating their involvement. Don't worry about the ability of candidates competing, it's usually the big time politicians who are collecting the biggest corporate bucks anyway.
  • Will someone please tell neal
Neal was blathering on and on about how people will vote for the candidate that will give them the most. Fine but:

Don't wealthy business people do the same? They even have lobbyists which they pay to assist them. Yeah only poor people vote in their interests.

I think the business owners are still ahead in this race for power. Poor people aren't the only ones who have the power to suck money out of the system, how about Goldman Sachs for starters?
Who's getting the most here? If anyone is working the system its the smarter wealthier ones who know how to do it and do it well they do.

Neal's arguement isn't one without problems now is it?
  • @Frank
What does that have to do with my comment?

What you are speaking of is catastrophic health insurance. I have never...repeat...never heard of anyone being turned down for health care like cancer treatments. Doctors would be arrested for doing such a thing. Insurance companies would be hung, drawn, and quartered.

Step in Obamacare, and you necessarily have to ration that care. Why? You force people that do not want that type of insurance to have it anyway.

Sorry. I don't want it. Obamacare will lead to that rationing. My current healthplan will not.
  • Shooting sick people.
    Best idea yet.

Can we start in the prisons?
  • Damifino
    thanks for the Friday laugh!
  • Montel is an idiot
Montel is a flaming moron. His Dear Leader isn't exactly sympathetic to the elderly:
    http://sfcmac.wordpress.com/2009/07/22/a-preview-of-obamacare-for-senior-citizens/
"Maybe you’re better off not having the surgery, but taking the pain killer.”

    Welcome to ObamaCare.
  • @ damifino and
the new (and improved) United States of Kenya. The upside is that we could, at last, win our own marathons.
  • Canadians and care
    Frank

My Canadian mother, uncle, and about 50 cousins all say the same thing about the Canadian health care system.

It's great unless you get sick. My Aunt died because it took over a year to get permission for a second opinion. Cancer sucks and so does Canadian health care
  • This Whole Debate Is Irrational
The only bill that we apparently have is HR 3900 which has not even been voted on in the House yet. Nothing has been presented by the Senate. How can you have ANT rational debate when you have nothing on which to base the deabte on?
  • @Moocher
The post below is for you Moocher. by me. Slut Puppy. Maybe I am the TW*T WAFFLE cause i cannot fill out a post properly.
  • YOU TW*T WAFFLE!
No i did not get to see those bodys dragged out of the E/R because i only go to Atlanta hospitals and these people bought the farm outside the city of Atlanta. Maybe I will make my next vacation plans for a city like Los Angeles to observe how they conduct the morning body removals. I wonder what color their body bags are? The black ones they use here are SO boring. OOOOH! Maybe i'll go to New Orleans! They have those jazz bands play at funerals. That could be entertaining. Moocher, no one said that people never die at emergency rooms due to improper care. It happens, and it will continue to happen. I believe that if we have socialized care in this country you will be able to show me more than four cases of people dying in E/R's.
  • I’d rather be shot than just left to die under your socialized medicine, montel.
Funny he would say that, since it is socialized medicine, not free market medicine, that leaves one no recourse but to go to another country where they can buy service, or die

I’m not rich, but I’m no irresponsible bum. I prioritized my healthcare before my wants, and changed my lifestyle to minimize my risks when I didn’t have insurance. I’ll pay for the best, rather than settle for the lowest common denominator (though that’s not even true, because government bigwigs never wait like the rest, anywhere there is socialized medicine). Enslave them that won’t take responsibility for themselves, not those of us that do.

If their system wasn’t a lemon, they wouldn’t have to forbid private companies from selling me an individual policy, or outlaw pay for service (If it isn’t in there already, it will be one of the first changes made after it’s passed). It’s so bad we have to be forced into it, and that should be a clue for the densest.
  • WOW just F'in WOW.............................
DAMIFINO..............damn it you have solved the mistry. goo' fo' you....I couldn't have said it better even if I had thunk it....

you deserve a break....take the weekend off.....have too many adult beverages, drive like a mad man over some stinkin' muslim liberals and we'll see you here monday.................oh! get to kalifornia and pick up some pot for us before the gubmint grabs it all for themselves..............
  • Montel
Why would anyone offer a broadcasting gig to a two time loser - the second wife was a stripper (priceless) - who couldn't cut it in the Navy. Kudo's for the prep school and Naval Academy - I went to school with a guy who accomplished the same feat in the 60's. But he rejoined the male branch of the navy after graduation.
  • just shoot who?????????????????
will someone please tell Lt M. Williams he ain't in kenya.....and it ain't legal to shoot sick nigroes here in the u.s.
  • Message to Matt
If private insurance company don't want to cover the cost of cancer treatments, or leukemia treatments, then maybe it is tome for the government to step in. People shouldn't die or lose everything because they or their child happen to develop cancer. The whole medical profession fails if people are allowed to die due to lack of money.

The words "pre-existing condition" should never be used against you even if you do smoke, play dangerous sports, eat junk food, drive faster, or do anything at all that might put you at a higher risk of developing something. And the word "denied" should not be part of any legal health care vocabulary.

    Here's a challenge for all.

Don't listen to what the talk show hosts say about that so-called horrible Canadian health care system. They always, selectively find one person (out of a 200 or more) who has a complaint about the Canadian system. Go out and actually speak to a real Canadian. Ask them what they really think about their "socialized" medicine. I think you'll be surprised by their answer. I don't think you'll find too many who would be willing to trade with the American insurance-based system. And there are a great many Americans who are dissatisfied with their current system.

I know, I am Canadian and I am intimately familiar with both systems.

  • Shoot the Sick
This is why Republicans want to keep our guns. So we can shoot sick people. *achoo!* No...no..it was the dust, I swear...*Kapow!* Aaaarrrggghhh!!!
  • Typical
Montel's response as well as the liberals here is nothing short of typical. As was said, try reading the bill. I did and my eyes began to bleed at about page 20. Funny thing is that my getting to page 20 is a lot farther than some of the legislators had gotten to.

And Frank Sanders(please don't be the former Arizona Cardinals receiver), you are a complete and utter dope. If you are unfamiliar with the term straw man, just re-read your post because that's all you've built. Auto insurers aren't in the business of losing money and signing on high risk drivers is a sure way to do so. If you're an unsafe driver, you'll get coverage but you will pay for it so you won't be denied coverage. As for pre-existing conditions, let's use your auto insurance analogy. You are an auto insurer. A customer comes to you who owns a totaled car and wants to insure it. Are you going to sell them a policy then let them get their car repaired or replaced on the policy you just sold them? If you say yes then you'll be out of business in about 15 minutes. Now, a car isn't the same as someone's health but you have to look at things logically from the perspective of the insurer. How do you expect an insurer to stay in business when you want them to sell someone an insurance policy for, say, about $3,000 a year with a pre-existing condition that costs $15K a year to treat? Again, if you do business like this and you won't be in business very long. The only difference here is that no one, and that's no one is denied care in this country. This whole thing is a complete fallacy perpetuated by the left. Hell, hospitals in Arizona are forced to treat Mexicans dumped at their facilities by Mexican ambulance drivers and do so even though it puts them in deep debt. Do a little fact checking once in a while and you will see the idiocy of your argument and even though it's probably impossible, try to think things logically.

And to those who think healthcare is a right, show me where it says that in the Constitution. I might have missed it.
  • Montel's Point
He makes a good argument! IT IS TIME TO THIN OUT THE HERD...!
  • Can you Say Hyperbole?
Montel's comments are just plain stupid. I have heard no one say that if you could not afford your medical care you should be shot. Statements like this just inflame the passions of the ignorant and do nothing to forward the debate on what should be done and how it should be paid for.
  • he saw this in Kenya?
Does Kenya have "socialized" healthcare? Isn't obama's "roots" in Kenya? Is there some sort of evil right wing plot to turn america into Kenya so they can prove that obama was born in Kenya by making him feel at home and get him to let down his guard long enough for Rush Limbaugh to say "AH-HA!!GOTCHA!!" then obama will break down and confess to being a plant"sleeper",a Manchurian cannidate sent by his father,Osma bin ladin(who is really in the employ of haliburton)which leds of course to Dick Chenny and to the conclusion that ITS ALL BUSH'S FAULT!/ITS ONLY ABOUT OIL!/BUSH LIED!......just connect the dots, its easy, even a snarkybird can do it (whew!TGIF)
  • ...
Ah, there is NOTHING I enjoy more than waking up in America and going down to the local hospital and watch them remove the body bags of the people who died the night before because they couldn't get any care. How rediculous! The problem with the healthcare debate (along with most other debates) is that the people debating are not inteligent enough to make a cogent arguement. When Montel makes innane statements like these, you MUST consider the source. The fact that a vast majority of Americans are so ill informed on the issues that face us will indeed be the downfall of America.
  • "just shoot people"
    Speaks of WAR!
Doesn't take much to start a war when you threaten people with being shot.
Old folks brought up loving freedom may be the ones shooting. They won't have anything to loose except to die honorably.
These idiots living in their ivory towers have no idea. Just because he (Montel) visited the tourist areas of his and BO's home country (Kenya), he thinks he knows it all. He's been listening to "Opray".
  • Montel - drug companies
This comment after he did all those ads for Partnership for prescription ads. A PRIVATE soltuion.
  • Truthseeker
Did you completely miss Joe's Point 3?

    3. Or they could just stay the hell out and let smart people and companies create these incentives to reduce their own overhead and push better public policy than the feds.
    By Joe

And Neal is not making up anything about rationing, it's in the bill. Have you read it?
  • Montel
I have always known that Montel Williams was a Liberal, but I always respected his point of view. I thought ultimately he had the best intentions of looking out for the people. That should always be lauded- especially if we can have some form of civil discourse.

Now, he demonstrates himself to be nothing more than a typical, ignorant, Obama-supporting WASP-swatter. Just another close-minded, race-baiting jerk.

The sad truth is that under Obama's plan, his MS probably would never have been treated until it was too late. Then, at least he would get a pain pill to help him out.
  • Frank Sanders' specious arguments
    Frank,

    Your arguemnts are not credible.

"I get the impression that it's mainly the rich folks who believe that the current health care insurance system that we have in place is fine. This is because the rich don't want to pay more taxes." O himself has stated that his plans are "deficit neutral" so your argument has no merit. I do not make the targeted $1 million dollars and I am worried that my taxes will go up too.

"However, no one chooses to have a pre-existing condition. No one should be denied coverage. With the same analogy, imagine if a family with 10 children were told that they have too many kids to educate." First off, unless you have 10 kids prior to gaining citizenship and qualifying for the guv school system - they would not be "a pre-existing condition" Second - why doesn't a private company have a right to choose who they want to do business with? If the insurance company doesn't want to cover your lung cancer because you smoked - why should DC force them to?

"Imagine if you couldn't insure your house because you once had an electrical fire in it." If the damage has not been repaired properly - you can't. This is also a fallacious argument - try to get insurance on something that is broken.

"Imagine if you couldn't get car insurance because 10 years ago you had a fender-bender or because your eyesight is not perfect." You can get car insurance if this is the case - it's called "high risk" and you pay a ton for it because the insurance company is a for-profit business.

Name one person in this country that has ever been denied care because of a lack of ability to pay. It is illegal to do so - except for a hospital that "patient dumps" like the one that Michelle Obama used to help run.
  • Obamacare and GOP Leadership
I am up to my eyebrows in frustration with the GOP leadership. This plan would be so easy to demagogue.

All you have to do is get our people on TV and radio to start saying, "The democrats are taking away your Medicare. They think you are too old to be saved, and would rather give the care that would save your life to someone else that they think is more useful to the government, and are trying to choose who lives and who dies by means of a committee."
  • Booger
Booger, you are my hero today.

egad, never thought I'd type that sentence LOL!
  • Re: Frank Sanders “This is because the rich don't want to pay more taxes. “
Sorry, but do you actually believe the government can do a better job than private industry?

Can you point to a healthcare system run by the government that isn't a bureaucratic nightmare?
And to the contention that “ This is because the rich don't want to pay more taxes.”

    Don't they pay enough?

I've asked this question before and no one has been able to give me a straight answer on it:

Explain the MORALITY of robbing the rich to pay for healthcare?
  • To Frank Sanders
I am not rich, we are 2 parents who work hard to be able to provide to our family, and we are totally against Universal Health care...
We are about free market and personal responsability
So no, it is not only rich people who are against it... it is PEOPLE who are FED UP with all the taxing and government intervention
  • Mr. Montel Williams
we all, at one time or another, should be exceedingly grateful that, as yet, it is not illegal to be an a$$h0le.
  • Obama sycophant Montel Williams
    Dumb and Dumber!
  • 40 to 60 Million
    "Shovel ready projects"?
  • Not even worth commenting on.
He's the perfect combination of stupidity and hubris. With poor fashion sense to boot.
  • Who are the Scare Mongers?
Boortz and his ilk on talk radio spend endless hours frightening people with claims that the "government take-over of health care" is going to cause the elderly die due to "rationed care."

Then he complains about someone on the left doing the scaremongering. Typical.

By the way, I agree with Joe below. If people are going to take advantage of any subsidies for health insurance, they should be required to give up smoking, lose weight and get a check up every year. Otherwise they should damn well pay for their own health insurance.
  • Neal, Christina, and company...

You do realize that Montel was probably high when he said that. He loves that weed. Can't get enough of it! That's why you can't take anything he says anymore seriously. Snoop Dogg and Tommy Chong are probably more sober than him.
  • Killing people
eh. Statists actively argue that abortion reduces the costs of operating government because there are less people sucking off they system...
  • Way to go Montel!
I agree with Stan AND MONTEL! Montel is a genius and an Africamerican so to all you haters out they're just stop being so racist. People like Montel have a right to medical care and he's a celebrity so he should know. But I suppose people like him should just die and reduce the surplus population, huh? That would help with global warming because it's just mean, but if he were white he'd be disposable. There's literally millions of you guys.
  • 3mbw
You know, I haven't seen many posts from copyleft lately.

I'm thinking this may be him/her. Just as ignorant anyways. Maybe they're related.

3mbw, talk radio and right wing blogs use facts and logic, not BS lies and scare tactics. Facts and logic blow holes in every argument the left brings up, whether it's health care, global warming, or any other issue they support.

When you don't have a leg to stand on, point fingers, make up lies, scare the hell out of people, and cry like little babies. That's the left's approach.

Your comparison of Montel's statement to talk radio is just as lacking in logic and fact as all liberal arguments.

At least you admit Montel isn't helping matters. OK, I guess this proves you aren't copyleft. Sorry for the accusation.
  • 3m's comparisons
The comparison that 3m offers up about the debate between the style of RW talk and LW talk radio are "stupidly" done - to quote a famous lefty.

Nobody on the right - and I mean nobody - has suggested that poor people or the uninsured don't need medical care when they are sick. What the right has argued - from the beginning - is that there are MANY alternatives to a guv run system that would work better. Why is it 3m, that every time the left wants to give control of something to the guv and the right disagrees - the right is automatically wrong?

I still offer the same basic question that I have for weeks - name one thing, other than the military, that the guv does well? Healthcare will be no different than education. We spend more money per capita than any other country and get worse results.
  • 3BMW
"But, is this statement by Montel any different than the garbage, misinformation, and scare tactics being spewed all over talk radio and right wing blogs every day? I don't think so."

I am on page 642 of reading this bill. The talk shows are not reporting misinformation as you put it. Read it for our self
  • Thank you, Neal, for properly labeling most Leftists as Statists.
The last thing those people should be labeled as would be 'Liberal'.

    Liberals are Anti-liberty.

Progressive? - That's a Statist that has realized that 'Liberal' has been properly discredited.
They will re-label themselves as something else as soon as people wise up to what they represent as a 'Progressive'.
  • Good Grief
finally a lib idea that won't bankrupt country...50 million bullets would be alot cheaper than paying to treat them...what an idiot!!! so now the libs are comparing our country to some third world fly hole...the future ain't looking too good.
  • . . . and now, a quote from Adolf Hitler . . .
"It is unbelievable, to what extent one must betray a people in order to rule it." - Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf

We have seen this type of logic on display people . . . and it was before my time . . . but it's out there for anyone to read. Whether you're on the Hitler side or the Stalin side of things, NEITHER ONE OF THESE THINGS IS FREEDOM.
  • Is it only the rich taht are against some kind of health care reform.
I get the impression that it's mainly the rich folks who believe that the current health care insurance system that we have in place is fine. This is because the rich don't want to pay more taxes.

However, no one chooses to have a pre-existing condition. No one should be denied coverage. With the same analogy, imagine if a family with 10 children were told that they have too many kids to educate. Imagine if you couldn't insure your house because you once had an electrical fire in it. Imagine if you couldn't get car insurance because 10 years ago you had a fender-bender or because your eyesight is not perfect.

The current system needs to be reformed, somehow, to make health care available, and affordable for everyone regardless of income or "gasp" pre-existing conditions.
  • It just follows their instructions
Found this on Daily Kos in an article about a video of Lewis Black dogging the GOP:

"Now, before someone says Black didn't offer substantive facts in his rebuttals, sometimes folks, when you're dealing with truly stupid talking points, the best response isn't one filled with facts and figures, but rather snarky dismissiveness. Showing McConnell's anecdote doesn't even qualify as an urban legend is brilliant IMO."

Now, the part that got me was the instruction to NOT use facts and figures but rather to use "snarky dismissiveness"!
  • Montel Williams and GOP health care
These statements made by Montel Williams are grossly irresponsible and shameful. Of course, he's on Air American and who listens to that station? But still, I'm appalled that he made these statements. It's just irrational.
  • The Democrats will just deny care to elderly
With Obamacare, the plan will deny care to the elderly in the later stages of life. Instead, the elderly will have to go for counseling as the counselors will try to make the person comfortable about not getting care and go ahead and dying.

Don't take my word for it... Go read the piece of legislation.

This stuff is what happens because the American people don't want to keep the US Federal Government within its Constitutional limits.
  • Montel who?
First of all, never listen to a grown man who wears earrings. Sorry if that offends some readers, but it is one of the surest ways for a guy to look like a douchebag.

That said... isn't this the guy who was peddling quarters with stickers on them as "Obama commemorative coins" at 3am on some obscure cable channel?
  • On Healtchcare Policy
IF the President actually wanted to make the US healthcare system better by nationalizing it, here's what he should do:

    1. You know there are going to be taxes to pay for the program- so make taxes based on personal choices. IE- Fat tax- If you are 30+ pounds overweight then you get taxed more because you are statistically more likely to have health problems due to your weight. You could do the same for choosing to smoke (although the federal government is very adapt at taxing them now), etc.
    2. Reward people for good choices/practices just like insurance companies are starting now. If you are in your ideal weight zone, you get a refund/reduction of your healthcare tax. A reduction so that you join a gym, etc. to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
    3. Or they could just stay the hell out and let smart people and companies create these incentives to reduce their own overhead and push better public policy than the feds.
  • So... I was watching Torchwood's miniseries on BBCA last night...
the big evil alien wanted 10% of the world's children for some evil reason. So, what's the socailist British gov't do?

That's right, they get the military together to blow this thing out of the water... no wait... that's what they should have done.

Instead, they have secret meetings an determine that the stupid, unhealthy and likely to end up in jail kids should be turned over and the public should be told that it's a necessary population reduction so they can maintain the same level of government services that they are receiving.

I dunno about you, but the writers of Torchwood seems to have a more realistic handle on how the government operates than Montel.

Sure, in other nations people die in the streets without healthcare, but Montel should be honest with his audience and at least read what's on the walls of every emergency room about guaranteed treatment there.

I'm tired of politicians and trial lawyers painting our doctors evil, money grubbing scum. It's just more deflection by those who really are evil, money grubbing scum.

Have a nice day and don't let the government take your children to pay off the aliens.
  • Montel and Healthcare
No aruguement that this statement by Montel does not help in the fight to get healthcare reform accomplished in this country.

But, is this statement by Montel any different than the garbage, misinformation, and scare tactics being spewed all over talk radio and right wing blogs every day? I don't think so.
  • Montel on Obamacare
What Montel apparently fails to realize is under Obamacare, he would not have been able to use his wealth to treat his MS and thus be very functional. He would have to wait months and receive the ordinary government health care folks of regular means have.

Not only that, he'll be taxed heavily to receive that ordinary health care.
  • Where does the money go?
We learned under the Bush administration that the government doesnt give back money to Americans, so where should the money go if not to better healthcare? Should Palin get more dresses on the government dime?
