THE INFLUENCE OF THE WHITE HOUSE

In January, the Congressional Budget Office reported that healthcare legislation drafted by the Senate would add $1 trillion to the federal deficit and only reduce the number of uninsured Americans by 16 million. Then in July, the CBO reported that healthcare legislation drafted by the House would add $239 billion to the federal deficit and actually increase healthcare costs.

Now, Barack Obama wants a meeting with the director of the Congressional Budget Office. After these CBO numbers .. which some Democrats have described as "devastating" .. it's time to pull out the big guns. Get this guy a meeting with the President. So the director of the CBO Doug Elmendorf went and had his sit-down with Barack Obama.

The Republicans smell something fishy. They believe that the Obama administration is trying to influence the CBO in order to get a more favorable cost projection on healthcare reform proposals. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell says, "It strikes me as somewhat akin to an owner of a team asking the umpire to come up to the owner's box." Finally ... something compelling from Mitch McConnell. A GOP aide says, "In all of CBO's 35 years, this is the first time a CBO director has ever been called into the White House to meet with a president in this way."

Do the Republicans have a point? Do you think that the Obama administration would be willing to use their influence and star power to cajole this guy into giving his proposals more favorable reviews?

Do a hog love slop?

What others are saying

  • Wait inanutshell!!!
Before you go, who's gonna win the election in 2012?????

    Great call.
  • What they discussed.
Hussein just wanted to let the CBO Director know that if there was anything about him or his family to be embarrassed about, it will be public knowledge soon, if those numbers aren't closer to what hussein says they will be. Hussein might say it's too late for these, but when cap and trade comes up...

I heard hussein invited the Director to pray with him and had myself a good laugh.
  • Predicting the future
I entered a comment last month titled "Watch the CBO carefully" on this entry: http://boortz.com/nealz_nuze/2009/06/what-cbo-report.html where I stated that PrezBo would be dealing harshly with the CBO soon since they are causing him so much trouble.

I have now successfully predicted the future, Tim Lahaye and I are going to go ink a book deal.
  • one trillion
Just to put a trillion into perspective. one trillion seconds is almost 32,000 years
  • hey what about................
who did vince foster work for and how did he commit sewside and then drive himself to the park......
  • Strong Arm
Strong Arm him. A little play right out of FDR and the Union Boss' playbook.
  • "influence the CBO"
    Probably "waterboard" him ... :-)
  • Wonder what PrezBo threatened him with...
Well, he can't threaten to take away Highway funding, like he does to get the states to knuckle under...his job, maybe?

Question...has crap like this been going on all through the years, and I just haven't noticed it til Bush, or what? I know politics has always been cutthroat, but I don't remember things being this vicious prior to Bush.

The level of threats, blackmail, and extortion in DC just amazes me. If these politicians actually lived in real life, half of them would be in jail, and the other half would be waiting their turn.
  • Elmendorf
Elmendorf better stay out of Fort Marcy Park.
  • CBO
I think Bill G nailed it. This might be a serious error in judgement by Emanuel and his second-in-command, King Hussein. I mean...how obvious can these marxist control freaks get?
If the numbers suddenly, miraculously come down and the CBO says 'We were wrong', this entire country is going to scream "Bullsh*t!". Well, most of us will. The looters and Obamabots will just keep looting and drinking koolaid.
  • Correct Verbiage
Most don't or can't conceive what a trillion dollars is! It would be neat to force government to say 1,000 Billion dollars vs 1 trillion dollars. Do you think the impact would be noticed?
  • Is a frog's @ss watertight?
Of course he's going to try to influence the CBO.
We'll just have to see how the numbers change...and we'll know for sure.
When facts and figures don't work...change the facts and figures...typical Washington MO
  • Maybe PrezBO is going to teach Peter Orszag some of that fuzzy math
After all, given that being a tax cheat or having a record is a pre-requisite for a cabinet/czar post in TOTUS' regime, it wouldn't suprise me if there are going to be some "changes" made to the CBO in short order.
  • Chicago Politics
Just the usual for (corrupt) Chicago-style politics. Why would we expect anything else? Funny thing is, Obama will see/sell this as new, innovative, reaching out, 'change you can believe in'.
  • CBO may go even harder
In an effort to make sure that nobody can accuse him of caving in to PrezBO, the CBO numbers may be even harder on the Obama administration in the future because they will be more careful to properly scrutinize every penny. This invitation just shows the Obama administration has over-played it's hand once again.
  • Probably
They probably threw some of that Chicago style politics at the poor guy.
Tag team of Obama and Rham...look out. He may find a dead fish mailed to him.
  • Fishy?
Nahhhhhhh, couldn't be, after all, what is Hope-N-Change?

Change the numbers and hope nobody's listening.
  • Sure he would!
The Big O has been known to be heavy handed in other dealings, why not this?

The CBO has been right the majority of times, whereas the WH has been wrong most of the time. I hope the CBO remembers their credibility will outlast this administration as long as they hold to their values.
