KEEP THE TAXES COMING

The Democrats are still scrounging to figure out more ways to tax the tar out of Americans in order to fund their government healthcare scheme. The latest idea they are said to be considering is a 10% excise tax on cosmetic surgery .. face-lifts, tummy tucks, hair transplants, etc. It would use the tax code as a means of enforcement. Not only would procedures prohibited under Section 213 of the tax code not be deductible, but they would be subject to a new tax.

Well .. here we go again. This is more of the same from the Democrats - go after those evil, disgusting high-achieving rich people by taxing the stuff that they do with their money. That ought to bring them down to size. The middle class isn't out there getting face lifts ... so they won't complain about the new tax.

I told you yesterday that sooner or later the Democrats will find a way to tax pretty much anything that high-achievers can do by virtue of their higher earnings. That will include special taxes on nicer homes, better cars and more exciting vacations. Think I'm kidding? Just wait ... and you have a chance to put more of these dangerous people in office next year, go for it.

What others are saying

  • Bring on the taxes...
I like the idea of politicians taxing everything in sight. The faster they move the better. With so many big government lovers in the country, the faster they get hit with taxes, the better.

Jerry beat me too it, but women getting alterations after breast cancer will have to pay more, unless it is exempted... for a short time. How about breast reduction, scar and tattoo removal, etc. Those who side with big government politicians are going to feel more paycheck pain. Some may even realize that politicians are not looking out for them.

My thoughts are medical boat cruises in international waters. Take a cruise and get your surgery done in one place with a better price than government dictates. Just make sure the doctor is certified by two or three private sector groups for quality. Unless you want government to tell you instead.
  • Whatever
No extra $$s coming in, everyone will go to India for the procedures.
  • What about under the FairTax?
I wonder how this would be considered under the FairTax. Is surgery considered a retail item/product? Would it matter if the surgery is not elective but required reconstruction? Would making an excemption for non-elective surgery just open the door for abuse and rigging of the tax code?

Obviously I have a lot more questions than answers.
  • Cosmetic surgery taxq
While I think taxing cosmetic surgery is a pretty stupid idea, I firmly believe those who get face lifts are mental...whatever happened to aging gracefully? Besides, it makes people look a bit freakish.
  • They aren't worthy
No way the evil rich should get these perks even if they can pay full price. The "ruling class" wants these things to be their exclusive.
  • Those Who Refuse to Learn From History...
How quickly the Dems forget about their 1991 luxury tax debacle, which almost destroyed the US private luxury boat industry, threw 100,000+ people out of work, raised no appreciable revenue on it's own and was hugely net revenue negative when lost taxes and added unemployment benefits from lost jobs were added in.
  • Taxing cosmetic surgery
The law of unintended consequences will apply here. I don’t know the stats but I would guess that cosmetic surgery is frequently a follow-up to medical required treatments and surgery associated with cancer and other life threatening diseases. My late wife had breast reconstruction cosmetic surgery immediately after her mastectomy surgery as part of her battle against breast cancer. Assuming that mastectomy surgery is not banned in our new health plan I guess we can look forward to paying additional taxes to restore a woman’s body and in many cases her self esteem if this brilliant idea moves forward. What an idiotic idea! Whatever bill ultimately passes it must contain a requirement that all elected officials and government employees must participate in the plan with no other option!
  • cosmetic tax
Vanity tax is no less disgusting than sin taxes; alcohol or cigarette taxes (drinking and smoking is my right). The whining in the articles wording over taxing the high achieving rich is preposterous and plain hyperbole (i.e. rhetorical bullsquat). Vanity is the culprit, not money. Get over the whining and focus on the truth. Also, love one of the bloggers claims that plastic surgeons will just close up shop and move elsewhere. Where is this lovely country of la-la located? Wealthy folks already leave the country for some surgeries. Those places in Europe under the name spa are not really fat farms and massage parlors. Get a clue.
  • Santa Cruz, CA
I believe she has already injested the pesticides that she is trying to ban. Heck maybe she is onto something, she has kept it a SECRET all these years that our vegetables grow on trees and are free!!
  • Poster Child
She sounds like the perfect Congresswoman from California - Nancy, your've got competition!!!!
  • show me yo' han's
ok git 'em up......no no I'm not robbing you that's the gubmints job.......

show me yo' hands if you luv osamabama, show me yo' han's if you luv da demoncraps, show me yo' hands if you luv politicians..........

com'on git dem han's up.........com'on now........let's see dose han's.......peeple pleeeeze hands.....it ain't that hard fo' ya is it?????
  • Fair Tax anyone?
What the Dims don't realize is that the Fair Tax would take care of this! Spend your money, get taxed! The rich spend more, therefore more tax! Duh!
  • You Mean It's not covered under Obamacare?
Won't cosmetic surgery be covered under universal health care. I was so looking forward to breast augmentation, tummy tuck and a face lift. After all, it's my right to look as good as all the Hollywood stars.

@LV - yes, people will go elsewhere for services. Mexico is cheap, clinics are clean and doctors have trained in the US. You can vacation in Cancun after getting lipo. LOL
  • a tax too late!
If this was done years ago on a state level Calif. would have a budget surplus by now(and thats just off Micheal Jackson and Joan Rivers)on the downside people would get uglier and another profitiable industry would be driven out of the country by this administrations tax everything that moves plan.
  • implant tax
Stats show that more and more middle class are going under the knife for plastic surgeries.
  • Waaah! They want to tax my boob job!
Look, I hate taxes every bit as much as Neal. But dammit, if you'll agree to take taxes off food, clothing, shelter, and gasoline I'll agree with you on plastic surgery. Your statements in your other article imply that you are against paying for cholesterol for some Poor Lardass, but then in your next article defend some Rich Lardass that is paying big money for liposuction? I'd love to hear your explanation.

Granted, the fair tax would make this a moot discussion, but you won't ever see that with a Democratic congress and president.
  • Tax on cosmetic surgery
This is a perfect example of static economics, combined with a just plain stupid premise. Want cosmetic surgery, go to Brazil (the Hollywood crowd does). MJ had numerous procedures done in South American clinics.

All this idea will do is shut down the industry, and then Democrats will get a higher % of nothing.
  • What is the MORALITY of taxing some to buy the votes of others?
Have any of you Leftists been able to come up with a good answer to this question?
  • Cosmetic surgery tax.
Fox called it a 'bo-tax', a play on words with botox. I hate to say this but it sounds like a great idea, at least taxing botox. John Kerry could end up paying off our national debt.
  • Feeding on themselves
Yes this would go after high achievers including sport stars, hollywood stars, and rock stars and anyone else whose business it is to look pretty. Maybe after Obama and his minions get through feeding on the hand that feeds them all the mindless idiots in this country whose existence is justified by a camera will understand the law of unintended consequences.
  • cosmetic surgery tax
I'm enjoying how most news outlets are running this story with pics of Nancy Pelosi or Joe Biden. Botox, anyone?
  • People will go elsewhere for services
For all these extra taxes for cosmetic surgery, other niceties, and other taxes on the achievers that the Democrats/leftists want to implement, these people will simply fold up shop here in the US and go to another country that is less taxing and less restrictive.

If you don't believe me, then why are GM, Ford, IBM and others increasing their investments in the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) countries?

You don't need a Ph.D. in economics to figure it out.
