GOVERNMENT AT ITS BEST

We'll have to jump across the pond for this one ... a father has been warned by his housing association (that would be the government) that his daughter's trampoline posed as a safety risk and must be kept inside. The 3ft wide trampoline sat in the shared garden of this housing tenant. The father says he was told to remove the trampoline "in case burglars used it to jump though his neighbor's windows."

Now a spokesman for the housing association denies that the risk of burglary was a factor. After receiving a complaint from a neighbor, the association claims it was concerned that other children would use the trampoline unattended and hurt themselves.

Both excuses are lame. Nanny state government at its best.

  • that's funnnnnnnnnnnny...................................
    RANDY...............

that's funny! can't help it. you should have had the trampoline in the deep end of the pool. the drunk lady would've drowned!!!!!!
  • we need these........................................
I'm guessing that if pools and trampolines are left to the dumbasses they will die...............

isn't that a good thing??? the weak and lame (stoopid) should be left behind for the good of the herd.

all the carnivores of the world agree.....
  • JT...you are kidding, right?
An adult does something stupid and you may be able to use that line but if a 7 year old child breaks their neck on a trampoline that they should not have access to without supervision then you can't act as if they are adults with fully formed minds and common sense.
  • Todd..the point is
Caveat Emptor. You are responsible for your own well being and safety. Don't blame others for your mistakes, accidents or stupidity.
  • The kids today....
Thanks to the dumbing down of America in the last couple of decades with children breeding children, most of the young ones today are not bright enough to handle these things or shallow swimming pools. I think both are illegal now in south carolina.
  • trampoline
I gotta agree with the housing assoc on this one. Forget the safety factor, it is the fact that it is on shared space. Forget that it is 'only' 3 ft wide, it is impossible to sit in peace even many feet away from these annoying things. Sorry, maybe this dad should buy a single family home & put it in his own private yard. But when it comes to intruding on everyone's shared areas, I give it a hands down.
  • JT...the difference is
even when used correctly a trampoline has a dangerous side to it. Leaving it where anyone can get on it is not only dangerous but poor parenting. I have one...my son loves it... but you can bet someone who has no idea what it's like has a good chance of flying off of it. The fact that it could be a 10 year old who is still a mush brain is a cause for concern and has nothing to do with a nanny state.
  • Trampoline
I was the first person in the world to jump on a round trampoline.

The guy that invented it brought it to our gym for my approval.
  • The Padded Box Doctrine
Everything is supposed to be perfectly safe even for morons to use. No one is supposed to get hurt regardless of their attempts to misuse something or anything. Every product is supposed to be perfectly benign. Every conceivable and inconceivable way of using or misusing a product must be accounted for in the products design to absolutely prevent any harm or injury. If any of the above points are not accounted for, the manufacturer is liable for any and all damages occurring and responsible for a huge monetary settlement, which of course will largely be confiscated by the plaintiff lawyers. Class dismissed.
    Welcome to reality.
  • Randy ---
Randy Sorry for your loss but we need to take it one step farther to protect our young ----

    Outlaw SUV's,
Outlaw Driving cars or SUV's in RANDY's back yard or anyones back yard.
Pass a law that anywhere children play a 10 feet wide by 10 feet hight concrete wall must be built to surround the area.....

Mrs. Brock, who's quoted in the article, sums it up best with this:
"If it carries on like this we are going to be breeding a generation of namby pambies."
  • Trampolines
My boss here in atlanta had to remove his daughter's trampoline ordered by his ... drumroll please.....

    HOME INSURANCE COMPANY.

yeah there is a prevelant consensus that trampolines are dangerous. I will love to find a trampoline in the house of an ER doctor.
  • Trampolines
That this is nanny state governing cannot be debated. The photo sure looks like it was taken at U.S. Marine Corps housing on the island of Okinawa.
  • Lawyers love trampolines
they are a lawsuit waiting to happen. it is probably in the man's best interest to put it away. "First we must kill all the lawyers" William Shakespeare....
  • I'm with the housing association too
The article said the trampoline is in a common area. It pretty much goes without saying that you shouldn't be allowed to store your junk on common land that is not yours . . . just like I cannot store a junker car on the grass at the park across the street.

Moreover, this is an opportunity to vent that my observation is that trampolines are usually the domain of "white trash". Prevalence of trampolines in a neighborhood is inversely proportional to the neighborhood's affluence.

And owning a trampoline demonstrates irresponsible parenthood. Cuts and scrapes and minor injuries are a rite of passage for childhood . . . but trampolines are far more severe on the risk equation . . . landing in a bad way can cause paralysis.

See the position statement on trampolines from the American Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons at http://www.aaos.org/about/papers/position/1135.asp
  • Trampoline
Years ago I got one for my kids, got rid of it after I broke my arm teaching them how to use it. Looks to me from the pic there already is a fence around it. Unauthorized kids using it would be trespassing.
  • Trampolines
My kid died on a trampoline. He was bouncing and laughing, when suddenly a SUV driven by a drunken real estate lady came roaring through our back yard. Poor little fellow never knew what hit him.

So, for the love of god, people:

    OUTLAW TRAMPOLINES!!!
  • Sorry, I agree with the housing association on this one ...
Trampolines are FUN!!! However, it's very likely that an "unprepared" individual on a trampoline can be seriously injured, perhaps catastrophically, even fatally. It's not the sort of thing you want to leave out in a "shared garden". I believe the legal term is "attractive nuisance". In other words, what numbskull would leave a trampoline out and available? Besides, exposure to the weather will rot the tramp bed.
  • Tramplolines
A trampoline should be treated no differently than a pool, which in most places you must be fenced to prevent small children from wandering in and drowning. I view the trampoline in the same light... IIRC, they are statistically more likely to cause an injury than any other recreational activity, even when supervised by an adult.
