Just a few months ago someone published a book slamming the FairTax. I checked Amazon.com today and that book is currently No. 193,091 in book sales. The FairTax Book was published what ... five years ago? It is number 9,961. Oh yeah ... I would like to see it doing better, but at least we're damned near number 200,000.

By the way ... I was thinking of doing an entire hour sometime next week, during the congressional recess, re-explaining and discussing the FairTax. Any comments?

What others are saying

  • Eliminate the 16th Amendment
Neal, Yes talk about the Fair Tax, There is a reason Election Day and Tax Day are spread so far apart.
It is imperative that we eliminate the 16th Amendment. “ The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, ….” Folks that means 100% if they could get away with it.
I’m also tired of all of the paperwork. Every Elected official should be required to Prepare their own taxes. That would make them understand what we all put up with.
Checkout Steven Malanga’s Article from Real Clear Politics. “ Politicians Love the Tax Code We Hate” and William Hogelands “ The Whiskey Rebellion” Two great additions to your Fair Tax Library.
Keep Fighting folks and donate Neals books to your local library!!!
  • Fairtax Segment
I would love to hear more about Fair tax. I am just starting to learn about it and would enjoy getting more information.
  • Fair Tax
    PLEASE PLEEEAASE PLEEEASE
DO NOT stop pushing the fair tax.
    It's our only hope
  • Fair Tax ///Debate
Have a debate on the air. Let us see both sides. Some are against it. Lets find out why.
  • Fairtax - Hour?
I think you should do a whole week on the fair tax. That way you can go into some real detail. All calls would be on how to promote it.
  • FairTax Hour
I would love for you to get either Hank Adler or Hugh Hewitt on to debate it with you.
  • Section 401 (New in 2009 Bill) Sunset Clause
The Fair Tax will be put into effect once passed by Congress. It will be repealed after 7 years if the 16th Ammendment is not repealed by then and the Income Tax bill be put back into place.
  • FairTax
Go for it! Not enough can be said until it is passed.
  • Fair Tax Hour Power
Absolutely - devoting an hour to the FairTax would be wonderful. Better yet, why not make it a regular segment of your show? Maybe you could spend 15 minutes or so every show discussing some particular aspect of the FairTax, perhaps addressing a specific question/issue that you've seen/heard arise.
  • Fair Tax
I think you should spend 1 hour daily talking about the Fair Tax and many ways it would benefit our country. Maybe then all of your listeners that have not read the books will have enough information to talk about it themselves. DOWN WITH THE IRS!!!
  • Stamps!
Spend less time talking and more time buying and giving out stamps that say "Fairtax.org" and will fit on a dollar.
  • FairTax Show
By all means. And you should devote a segment every day to the FairTax - as an answer to your government outrage of the day.
  • Fairtax hour(s)
Absolutely must be done! Perfect time to focus on what will work - Fairtax.
  • Fairtax Hour
    DO IT! Podcast it too.
  • Fair Tax
Do it! I'd love to hear the idiot's arguments that wrote the counter opinion book regarding the fair tax.
  • FairTax hour long show
Please explain to people that EITHER they'll get they're entire current gross pay in paychecks, OR prices will remain the same. We can't have BOTH higher paychecks AND zero inflation.
  • Address The Book
Very strange that you don't mention that the author of that book is Hugh Hewitt. Are you afraid someone might buy it?

I've been a supporter of the Fair Tax, but he brings up some thoughtful and serious concerns. Why don't you address them directly? Are you taking a page from Al Gore and running from debate?

Why, when this has been a pet project of yours, did it take you so long to even mention that book? And when you do, all you can say is that it didn't sell well. Does that make the arguments in that book any less valid?

Don't re-explain the Fair Tax. We all know what it is. Confront the criticism and show us that the plan can stand scrutiny.
  • Fairtax
I would love to hear an hour about it. Let us know ahead of time so I can be sure to be at my desk. I think the podcast idea is also great.
  • hour on the Fair Tax
    Do it!
  • Fairtax for an hour...
Yeah an hour will be great!!! As an added bonus turn it into a podcast that others can acquire over iTunes (or somewhere) as a paid download ($.99?) I know Clark Howard's team knows set that kind of thing up quickly.

    Looking forward to listening.
  • Someone's last name here is TARD...and their first name is Fair...
It would "stimulate" jobs away from the united states, when a sales(services also) tax is basically a "23%" tax on business. And the FraudTax just renames the IRS, it does not eliminate them. And the "new" IRS would become the largest welfare handout ever, and start looking at your purchases (did you pay your taxes on that T.V.?!?!), and if little johnny mows a lawn and does not charge the FraudTax, he is now a criminal!!! WOW!!! GREAT IDEA!!!
  • Go for it
Neal, you really should do this, and do it more frequently. Also, you should get one or both of the authors of the anti-fair tax book on to debate them. It would make for some great air-time. You should also save the broadcast and make it available for downloads, if nothing else, you should make the text available for viewing online, for those who can't catch your show.
  • FairTax
I graduated from Emory U. and I personally LOVED ripping into my liberal economics professors thanks largely to the book; keep the ammo coming
  • A FairTax Show
Yes Neal - please devote the show to the FairTax. You can't talk about it enough. Please stress the difference between "inclusive" and "exclusive" taxes, and dwell on what the FairTax would mean to farmers and ranchers. This is a HUGE group of traditional conservative libertarians. These are very independent-minded people who would be a powerful force in the FairTax movement. I know many of these folks and unfortunately, many do not support the FairTax because the idea of a big sales tax (they stop thinking and reasoning at this point) scares many of them. They are so hopelessly ensnared by generations of countless government programs, tax breaks and subsidies, they have a tough time getting their head around a new paradigm like the FairTax. If we could win the support of this group, it would be a very big deal because they are a very powerful political force in this country. Help them understand. You have to de-program them (not to mention many others) whose brains have been wired wrong by decades of government mind control about taxes.
P.S. Discussing the sordid history of the 16th amendment would also be very poignant.
  • 2 Fairtax Questions
I think the FairTax is a great idea btw, but have a couple questions:

    1. Are there any arguments or points brought up by detractors since the book was published that made you take pause?

    2. Why don't the Republicans (and conservative talk show hosts) support the FairTax more? It seems like a no-brainer that they would be shouting it from the rooftops, but they are often silent. Is it because being the party of "lower taxes" is their #1 selling point and without the IRS to demagogue they would no longer appeal to those who are fiscally conservative but socially more liberal?

    Thanks for all you do.
  • JackWayne Flat Tax advocate
Jack, we've already tried a 'flat tax'. Recall that Ronald Reagan pushed through his Tax Reform Act of 1986 (TRA'86) lowering the income tax from 70% when he became president to 28% when he left. TRA'86 reformed the tax code to three simple flat rates; Low (28%), Lower (15%) and Lowest (7%) and it also eliminated almost all deductions. The result was doubling the tax revenue (while Congress tripled spending) and was a great boon for the nation.

Today, a quarter century later, Congress has monkeyed with the tax code adding two additional higher tax rates and tens of thousands of pages of additional tax regulations resulting in the current complex draconian mess that we have now.

It would be impossible to mandate multiple tax rates with the FT as a sales tax uniformly taxes everyone equally when they voluntarily CHOOSE to buy something. Likewise the 'prebate' feature equally refunds to everyone the taxes they pay for basic necessities. This function could easily be facilitated by existing entities such as the Social Security Administration… or the private sector via contracted services from VISA or MasterCard. Just think of the ease, convenience and benefits of everyone getting their prebate checks automatically deposited to their credit card accounts each month! Talk about “economic stimulus”!!! The credit card companies would benefit so much they should have to pay a fee for the PRIVILEDGE of providing such a service!

The FT does exactly what a tax code is supposed to do... generate revenue for the government as fairly as possible. The Flat Tax was great, but government morphed it into a monstrosity. The FairTax takes politics out of the tax system.

The Flat Tax was good, but the FairTax is better.
  • Talk it UP!
    Neal,

Definitely talk about it next week.

Better yet, talk about it EVERY week. Keep the FairTax in the minds of your listeners. You know that people generally have the attention span of a fruit fly. We need the FairTax to get as much attention as possible.
  • Fair Tax Hour
That would be a great idea. How about also having an entire show or dedicate a week of shows or more to the Fair Tax and have guests on from Congress (both sides) to discuss and debate with you on the show?
  • Emphasize the jobs!!
Neal you have to emphasize how the tax base will grow by leaps and bounds from corporations moving their operations over here and how the drug dealers, prostitutes, illegals, and tourists will be paying there share as well. This is the ultimate job creating idea!!
  • An Hour Would Be Good
I think an hour discussing and explaining the FairTax would be excellent but it'd be even better if it was televised somehow. Have CSPAN come into the office again or even better, Fox News.
  • Going Strong
I like the idea of you dedicating a block of time to the Fair Tax, rather than just hitting the topic hear and there when you take a question regarding the Tax.
  • FairTax
Yes, but how about a whole show dedicated to the FairTax? Or better yet, a 30 minute segment on your good friend Sean Hannity's primetime show explaining the current problems with the republican party, and what the FairTax can do to cement a victory in 2010. Just a thought.
  • answer this
I'm still waiting to hear an answer from someone about what will happen to retirement plans that are contributed to pre-tax. Will I have to pay a one-time tax if we implement the fairtax to catch me up to all those who contribute into a Roth?
  • FairTax on the Border
I've read The FairTax Book twice and do not recall the issue of cross-border purchases being addressed.

Since the FairTax is a consumption tax, I assume US-based internet and catalog retailers would be required to collect the tax. Would international retailers be required to collect the tax?

Also, it seems to me that people on the border can drive to Canada or Mexico to buy goods and bring them back without paying the FairTax. How would the FairTax cover these goods? Impose the FairTax as a duty or would these goods be untaxed?

If the FairTax is imposed like a duty, would there be an allowance in their FairTax for souvenirs?

Neal, would you address these issues if you do a show on the FairTax?
  • FairTax Day
    DO IT!
  • go for it
Neal, I think it needs to be emphasized how the poor, poor, pitiful, poor would benefit from this, such as employment opportunities, how much easier it would be in starting a private business, and how this will be the start of bringing government back to the local level.
In the long run, it would be nice if the federal government would get no more than 15% and the rest would be collected by the individual states, than government would be local again, no more vote buying pork and the US congress would be a part-time job, as it should be.
  • Please enlighten me
One of the arguments against Fair Tax that I have heard is that it will spawn off a new Resale Industry. Since only new services and goods are taxed, Americans will circumvent the system by buying "used", especially for high ticket items such as homes and automobiles. On the surface, this argument seems to be valid. If I am mistaken, will someone please enlighten me?
  • FairTax
I downloaded the FairTax toolbar and think it is a great way to raise the revenue they need to hit the national stage. I am disappointed to see on their web site that they have set the bar so low as to only try to get 25,000 people to download the toolbar by the end of the year. They should be reaching for the stars and ask for 1 million toolbars if they want to make this happen. What small minded marketing guru is running this show? They have the hottest issue of the day and they think they can only get 25,000. You get what you ask for!
  • not baaaaaaaaad........................................
neal that's a good idea.......I'll play it for my hottie goats and sheep.....your voice gets them hot!!!! they are sexy lil' critters.....

    I'll be baaaaaaaaaack!!!!!!
  • Double standard
Just because something is popular doesn't mean it is worth a crap. Examples: NASCAR, country music, McDonalds, People Magazine, etc.
  • Fairtax Hour
YES, YES, YES! The Fairtax is the single most effective policy we could enact in this country to turbo-charge the economy and get government out of our business. You can't possibly talk too much about it. It continues to amaze me how many people still refuse to study and understand the Fairtax (hello Geraldo Rivera - IDIOT).
  • JackWayne's Flat Tax

  • Fair Tax
Please please please get Rep. Hank Johnson on to debate you - I have written him three times to date and still haven't gotten him to admit he hasn't read the book. I just get the stock reply.
He probably would like some air time.
  • Fair Tax Talk
Take questions in the next few weeks and answer them on air. My question: what makes you think Congress will stick with only the sales tax when they are so full of other ideas about how to steal our money?
  • Fair Tax
PLEASE DO IT!! Do it everyday for all I care. I am amazed at the number of people who know nothing about it. Maybe that dimwit out in California will listen!!!!
  • STUPID IDEA
The FraudTax is SOO stupid, just check the Mises Institute on this 'idea'. The only true idea would be to ELIMINATE the income tax(and all other taxes) and replace it with NOTHING! But that idea was supported by a libertarian(RP), so obviously you did not support this. TARD!
  • Fair Tax Hour
GREAT IDEA!!! I have a friend that tells me the Fair Tax will only bring about a large Black Market for people to buy things below the taxed price of any item.
  • FairTax for real!
Please spend more time on the FairTax next week! Also remind your listeners and twitter followers that there are FairTax volunteers all over the country who will gladly speak FairTax at organizational meetings (Kiwanis, HOA, Rotary, professional associations, Chambers of Commerce...)

I have actually been invited for FairTax Tuesday every week on our local Daytona talk show before you come on the radio. We're gaining traction and need to keep it going for the 2010 elections!! wndb.am
  • Boortz Afraid to Debate the FairTax
Instead of repeating your one-sided infomercial on the FairTax, why don't you have an actual debate on its merits?

By the way, the critical book on the FairTax is FairTax Fantasy by Hugh Hewitt (a law professor and talk-show host) and Hank Adler (an accounting professor). They have offered to debate Boortz "anytime, any place."

Don't you wonder why Boortz isn't up to it?
  • FairTax Review
Great idea to use the recess period to refresh listeners understanding of the FairTax.
  • Fair Tax Hour
GO FOR IT. An old fashioned radio skit using the chapter where you describe life under the Fair Tax and then have some try to spin the current system as cure for everything that ails them would be great.
  • Stick with what's out there
Neal, stick to health care and crap & trade, and the oppressive taxes and costs, and losses of freedom, that both will cause. The Left would probably love to impose a 'fair tax' ON TOP of the current income tax. They're already flirting with a VAT. Unfortunately I think we'll need to save fair tax for when the left has less power. We have more pressing stupid ideas to kill right now.
  • Fairtaxer
Go for it Neal. It'd be great to hear from some supporters in congress too.
  • Fairtax Hour
I'm still talking to people about it, was just at political rally to talk it up. So yeah, TALK IT UP!
  • Fair Tax
Do it! We have got to keep pushing this and you are the best man for the job!
  • FairTax
I could listen to you do an hour on the FairTax every week. I've read your books and been to the rallies, but nothing pushes me to talk to friends about the FairTax like on-air discussion.
  • I couldn't find the book sales list
but I wonder how Atlas Shrugged (1957) and The Ominous Parallels (1982) are doing.
  • what can we do to make it law
Love the FairTax. I'm sold and so is most of your audience. Spend more time discussing how we can convince the rest of the country.

How can this idea be presented in a way more people can see the benefits?
  • Fair Tax Fantasy
I saw this book also but refused to buy it. I did not want to give my money to anything against the Fair Tax. I think it would be useful if you addressed any of the arguments the Fair Tax Fantasy book makes so I don't have to read it.
  • Most important issue...
Without a doubt the Fair Tax is the ONLY economic stimulus we need. It also helps solve some of the corruption that takes place between politicians and lobbyist.

If we could somehow couple it with term-limits we might have a chance of rescuing this country from the brink of disaster and a point of no return.

An hour is not enough. Talk is not enough. Occasional Tea Parties are not enough. We need action, organized action, non-violent, of course.
  • Hugh Hewitt is a douchebag
Gee, I wonder whose crappy book tanked? Coughhughhewittcough. Neal, start pushing the Fair Tax hard, heavy and often. We need a rescue from Obama's 'rescue'.
  • fair tax
Yes yes neal, please talk about something that 95% of your listeners already know about, and support for an hour, then you should talk about how the Earth goes around the sun, and then explain how gravity works!
I would prefer to learn about a new Boortz hate, we have tax, government teachers and schools, democrats, what else????
  • Fairtax
Invite some members of congress to enlighten them.
  • Fair Tax show
Even though I read the books, the more you discuss it, the more prepared I become to make the argument for it. If nothing else it refreshes our memory.
  • Anti-FairTax Books
There's another one that's #1,400,000+. I read through the notes and comments, and it almost makes me want to read these books out of morbid curiosity. Every criticism brought up in the comments has been dealt with in your books or on the air; it almost gets entertaining, but then it just gets sad...
  • "That" radio host
I enjoy listening to the radio host who wrote that anti-FairTax book immensely and am genuinely frustrated at him on this issue. He has a tremendous audience, certainly one capable of being educated. Please, I think it would be a great boon if you, Neal, would go on his show and debate him. I think he would fold up like a cheap suit.
  • Here is how to sell the Fair Tax
Neal, Love ya, man, but you are presenting your arguments in exactly the wrong way...with facts.
The government educated voters do NOT read a 200 page book that is filled with charts, graphs, and rational arguments. (When their congressmen won't even read their own bills, how can we expect better of our citizens.)
Instead, ask the simple question, "At the end of the week, would you rather have MORE money to spend on what YOU want, or LESS money?"
Keep it simple. Make it resonate with voters. "Do you want to keep MORE of your money? Or do you want to keep LESS of your money?"
  • Switch from FairTax to income tax
Neal, I always enjoy it when you spin the yarn about what it would be like if the situation were reversed, and politicians were trying to sell people on the idea of an income tax that would replace the FairTax. Work that story in, it really illustrates how ridiculous our current system is.
  • Fair Tax Hour
I think everyone could use a refresher course from the TalkMaster. I find that people's versions of the fair tax change slightly over time without the 'experts' talking more about it.
  • You FairTards are SOO stupid, aahh, let's break out the lego's......
The FraudTax is a HUGE welfare check system, that makes it like april 15 EVERY day, that renames the IRS, and could possibly make them more insane than ever, that would be a "23%" percent tax on business, the "22%" embedded number is false, would tax me
ANYTIME I went to the doctor(WOW! GREAT IDEA!!!) etc...

WATCH OUT!!! HERE COME THE FAIRTARDS!!!!
    DDAARRTT!!
  • Fairtax Hour
    Great Idea! Do it!
  • Fair Tax Fantasy
Get over it Neal, the FairTax (much as I like the idea) will *never* be passed, since it requires Washington to cede power. They will never, ever give up the power to punish using the tax code.
  • Fairtax
By all means, Neal, talk up the FairTax!

Its something we could use EVERY day until we get more people to comprehend it!

Keep up the good work. Time for a new FairTax book?

I've read the original several times, and the 2nd one twice...
  • Preaching to the Choir
You're preaching to the choir on the Fairtax. I'll listen anyways, but it will only be entertaining if you're going to let loose on some idiot callers.

You know, tell them their IQ would fit up the posterior of an ant and still rattle around like a BB in a battleship.
  • Fair Tax
Can't go with you on the FT, Neal. I believe in a flat tax for everyone regardless of income. Your plan is an attempt to do away with the IRS for the most part but falls flat on it's face with the monthly (or annual) checks to everyone. What a bureaucratic nightmare that would create! Plus, you are attempting to continue the progressive income tax but under a different guise. I don't buy it.
  • An hour?
Only an hour? You could do a whole show. Take an hour to explain it and the rest of the time you could take phone calls from the people who weren't paying attention the first hour, then top it off by re-broadcasting the first hour again in the 12 o'clock.
  • Fair Tax
You should talk about the Fair Tax every chance you can.
  • FairTax
See if you can get Rep Hank Johnson on the air for this discussion. This socialist is, of course, against it.
  • Fair tax
Need to link to Fairtax graphics that can be printed by all of your listeners.

"FairTax Want to learn more? Go to Fairtax.org" Listeners can print these up and leave them in restaurants, returned library books, bathrooms, gas pumps, bulletin boards at work.
  • FairTax Radio Discussion
My House Rep, Hank Johnson, is against the FairTax (I know, I've written to him about it.....a lot). Any chance you could get him on the air to make a fool out of himself defending his position?
  • Fair Tax Talk
Yes, keep pluggin' the fair tax...
  • FairTax and Healthcare
A co-worker and I figured out how to pay for healthcare. Pass the FairTax and then add additional tax to those things deemed unhealthy - you want that BigMac - pay the FairTax and then an additional 10%, you want to smoke same thing additional 10%, alcohol, Soda etc.
  • Yes
There's not enough information out there about the Fair Tax! Of course Barack Obama would say "over my dead body" to this plan - I'm sure of it. So for now we can only fantasize.
  • Fairtax Hour
    GREAT idea!

If the Libertarian party would get behind the Fair Tax full force we might just have a viable 3rd party candidate in 2012.
  • Neal, keep talking about it...
There are still people that I talk to who have never even heard of it. They can't be in favor of it if they don't know what it is. I always point people to www.fairtax.org, but I can only inform one or two at a time. You can reach thousands, and I'm willing to wager that you do a better job of explaining it than I do.

We must not assume that we've reached everyone yet. All your regular listeners and website visitors may have heard/read it a hundred times before, but there will be someone out there who is tuning in or surfing their way to this website for the first time. They need to hear it. Where else are they going to get it from?
  • The Fair Tax Book
So your argument is as follows: I've sold more books than this other guy so my premise must be right. I would prefer if you actually refuted the fallacies in his argument.
  • Re-explaining and discussing the FairTax
I definitely think Neal should go back over the FairTax. You never know who's listening, and though most who are listening are familiar w/it, you might reach someone who isn't, and you just may be able to show them the light.
  • Fair tax
Just as location, location, location is the key to a successful business so to..
repetition, repetition, repetition is essential to continue the momentum of the FairTax.
  • Faritax
LOVE to hear more about the Fair Tax! Go for it!!
  • Hour fo FairTax
I think that would be great. I wonder what effect inflation has on the tax, if any.
  • Please do
A Fairtax discussion would be nice.

Go over the high points, then primarily stick to the criticism.

Among other things, here's what my roommate thinks (and he won't listen to my counter arguments, even though I've read the book). Just like they tell you to ask a question because someone else is thinking it also, I'm sure these misconceptions are duplicated elsewhere.
    *Fairtax is regressive

*Fairtax has an equal, if not greater amount of bureaucracy than the current system so it's not really simplifying anything (so he knows about the prebate but still argues it's a regressive tax)

*The only people who would support the Fairtax are wealthy individuals who would benefit (Kinda duh factor, why support anything if you wouldn't benefit. Key word though is wealthy)

If you had this as a Townhall post (people get nervous when they see Boortz in the URL) I could actually email it to people, or print it out and post it in the break room :)

BTW, I was driving in to Atlanta the other week and noticed a billboard for Imus. The tagline was "If you're tired of Boortz" So apparently he can't think of anything new and is trying to get listeners off being an alternative to you.
  • Economic Boon
The Fair Tax will be a great boon to the economy and NOW is the time to talk, talk talk!
  • Fair Tax
Neal, please do an hour next week about the Fair Tax. Given the current state of things, you should be talking about it regularly. We need it now more than ever.
  • Just one comment
Can you lock some politicians into a room with a radio, strap them down and make them listen to the damn thing?
  • FairTax
Take as much time to discuss it as you need. I know your job is primarily to entertain, but the FairTax is so important i will encourage any discussion of it at any time at any place.
  • Fair Tax Discussion
Yes please ! I would enjoy hearing more about this as I don't yet kow enough to sway either way...
  • outreach up north
By all means, discuss the Fairtax as much as possible. Unfortunately, I think your listening audience are already heavily behind the idea.
