Rand interview
I see Wallace was a communist even then. He must be very proud of the damage his ilk has wrought.
bandwagoners
I first read Ayn Rand about 13 years ago. I love her ideas. However, most of the nitwits raving about her now never heard about her until Nov. 2008.
For you bandwagoners out there, what do you think Rand would have thought about the PATRIOT ACT? How about prayer in public schools? Intelligent design?
Just curious how you 'great intellectuals' on this page feel////
Do NOT pass up this Ayn Rand interview.
Ayn Rand's interview with Tom Snyder is better than Phil Donahue or M. Wallace {all 3 on Youtube.com} It should be viewed in all public schools! Powerful and currently applicable advice.

Mike Wallace
Wow, Mike Wallace was even a big terd back then, I guess that's something he didn't have to grow into. You could hear the disdain in his voice. She continuously told him no, he was wrong or did not understand. And those that are the Mike's ilk are the one's our "society" has charged with giving us objective truth. Long live Ayn Rand's philosophies. The sooner we rid ourselves of this 19th Century socialist clap trap the better we shall all be. Just remember "bread and circuses"
Wallace
I glad people don't smoke during interviews anymore.
Ayn Rand
She was and is right. God help us all.
Best one
"Every man earns his own profit."
Rockhound is right
Her composition blows. Her editor blows harder. I could edit that books page count down by 30% and not lose any meaning.
The Fountainhead was the same way. How many times do we have to be told the protagonists architecture was pure, clean and without any unnecessary element?
Steve
"They is NO reason-based morality."
You also say today's morality is based on Judeo-Christian values. Were the people who preceded Judaism ALL immoral?
You should read Seneca to learn about morality.
She got it right ....
50 years ago before internet and computers. Can you image how well off American's would be today if our government had taken heed in 1960!
You tube..................................
These were good, but the Phil Donahue and esp Tom Snyder interviews on youtube are even better.
I can only wonder what Ayn Rand would say about the U.S. today.
"What does God have to do with it?"
My answer is this. People need truth and grace to have a moral code. Morally speaking the Bible offers truth and grace(I am not offering this insight to start a science vs religious debate).
However SP you offer 2 perplexing suggestions. First is your simplicity, You say that if something makes you feel bad it is wrong. Does that imply that something that makes you feel good is right? Is it enough for a drunk driver to say he felt good so I drove home? I felt bad when I punished my nephew when he hit my niece. Am I a bad person for punishing my nephew? You also state that morals are "standard equipment." Then how do you explain the people that molest 5 year old children or the judges that sentence them to probation? Is it only wrong if the rapist says he felt bad doing it?
Wow
that was just amazing, two intelligent people discussing philosophy. i couldn't tell if wallace disagreed with her or was just playing devil's advocate, but he asked some very tough questions.
what really blew my mind was that could have been recorded yesterday. it's a shame that nothing has changed in 50 years.
It slipped by me that she was a fan of Aristotle.
That would explain part of why when I first started reading things she wrote, I thought of her as someone who put down on paper what I saw and thought(except religion, but I don't agrees with anybody on everything). I think, "The Anti-Industrial Revolution," is her best, it has a very interesting section on education.
I've always credited Aristotle most for showing me how to use my mind.
response to "What does God have to do with it?"
In response to your questions about innate morality, read "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis, -You'll have your answer explained by a true intellectual.
Nice
I like the fact that even though Mike Wallace didn't agree with her, he was cordial and didn't berate her. Unfortunately, that's probably what would have happened to her today.
What does God have to do with it?
What a treat it was to watch that interview. And while i know this is a bit off topic, i really must address it... I have such a hard time understanding why people think you can in no way have morals without god. I believe that if you have an I.Q. above 50 that a moral guide (if you will) is inate within you. I knew the difference between right and wrong at a relitively young age as i'm sure the vast majority of us did and i have no religous background or training. How is this possible? It is simple, if I did something bad or wrong, it made me feel bad. I just KNEW it was wrong. What is written in scripture had nothing to do with it. As an atheiest, I have people of religous faith ask me quite frenquently where i get my moral code from if not from god? Is it not obvious that with even a minimal intellect basic morals are standard equipment? Or am I just being stubborn? Also, I agree with "butt neckid" she IS a hottie. Women with brains usually are...
Another gem
"A free economy will not break down. All depressions are caused by government interference."
Well, we sure are getting our fair share of government interference. Where do you think that will take us?
thanks John Gault
I guess based on the timeframe of the late 50's I could have more accurately stated "an old soviet bloc country" for my point of reference.
"... take a flying leap at a rolling donut..." - Chuck
Frank's smoke obsession
I person smoking in the late 50's was not at all unusual. The surgeon general's report came out in 1964 I believe. I know you want to hoist Boortz on his own petard, but I believe you are a victim of yours.
Rand as a master of logic
"your example is a fantasy and could never happen."
In logic this is known as "Reductio ad absurdum." Rand, of course, recognized this immediately. Wallace was in way over his head.
One More Thought
Ayn goes out of her way to show Objectivism as an economic philosophy. I was a bit put off at first to see her cast religion aside, but after further thought, I understand why.
If you are Objectionist, you have a greater potential to serve others in whatever form that service takes. The more important point is that you are making that decision as to who, when, and how to serve others. You decide the "value" of that which you are serving, but are not a slave to that service.
This is just brilliant. I always thought it was a bit Oxymoronic for the government to promote the social justice of Jesus whilst bashing him repeatedly in open forums. The Christian motive for loving one another can more truly be personalized in this economic philosophy. Imagine how much more we could do for others and our own personal causes if we were not taxed of this earned income? This income would also be left with the people who could more directly and intelligently apply it. That's true freedom my friends! Feeling good about something should be personal- not governmental.
Logic
Amazing interview. It was a joy to watch as Ayn dismantled every one of Dan's argument with pure and simple logic. Nothing more. My favorite dismantling of an argument , which is a typical leftist tactic when Dan tried to argue "what if ONE man held the entire world's uranium supply" As Ayn so nicely put it... "your example is a fantasy and could never happen." And that is why you can never argue fantasy against logic. Logic are facts, undisputed. Fantasies are whatever you want them to be when you want them to be.
RE: Ayn's shifty eyes
Did you notice she didnt say ummm.... ONCE?
there were prolly teleprompters all over the room

Wallace is an idiot
Wallace believes that just because someone was voted into office by majority vote that the legislation that is then "forced" on us by these elected officials is what we would by default have voted for ourselves. What the hell kind of logic is that? You can not make me believe that the bailouts and the other crap going on in the current administration would have in any way happened if it were given to majority vote of the people to inact. It was forced on us even though it was clear the majority didn't want it. Through past and current legislation and the consolidation of media, it has been made so that the system is rigged to not give the people any real clear choice in different political philosophy of those we can elect. Politicians should keep themselves to politics and stay out of the economic business. I love the idea of seperation of economics and state.
Judeo-Chritian Morality
this just make me laugh. You shall not murder unless the state tells too. all you have to do is look around and see how Judeo-Chritian Morality is working. and i won't go into the preachers who have caught with male prostitutes or their meth addictions. and the catholic priests. save us from your Judeo-Chritian Morality!
The neer to the church, the further from God. - John Heywood
Morality
Moral judgments can be based on logic. It is illogical to think you have the right to anyone elses property because that would infer they also have the right to yours.
Logic is moral.
She does not eliminated charity in her discussions, she just wants to make sure that the recipients deserve it. There certainly is no reason why charity (or welfare) recipients should not prove they deserve to receive. There is always something they can do. Even children can at least be taught things to help them escape the enabling forces that keep generations enslaved.
And Conner
My eyes are starting to get a bit shifty too.
Connor
If you lived in the Soviet Union in the 40s or 50s you'd have shifty eyes too. Looking for the man to come get you...
Rockhound, I did a lot of skimming when I read it. Just wait until you get to John Galt's speech. 60 pages. I read the first few then skipped to the end of the speech.
What makes the book so good is how spot on accurate it is with what's happening now.
People Like Stan...
There's something you all need to understand about Stan and people like him. For starters, leave it to someone like him to take the name of the jerk from the original Revenge of the Nerds movie. Just knowing that makes sense, no? Also, people like him have lives so devoid of meaning that they must come to forums like these to be nothing but a contrarian. People like this simply cannot think for themselves. This is why his posts are filled with sayings right out of the liberal playbook(Blame Bush for starters). Worse yet, when someone like Rand, who, unlike Stan and his ilk, actually lived under this type of government, people like Stan and his ilk can do nothing more than poke fun at superficial flaws. Which is quite odd because Sarah Palin is a beautiful woman and Stan does his best to trash her.
As for Rand herself, I'm trying to will myself through Atlas Shrugged but to be honest, to me, it's one of the most boring pieces of literature I've ever read. Sorry, it's just my opinion. Hopefully it will pick up.
Wow
Wow, Mike Wallace was a real piece of workso amazingly and insinuatingly rude. I liked Ayns response to his hypothetical question about the monopolyreject the premise. I do not agree with her morality, as she states it in the first segmentit is not my moralitybut I do think that how it applies to the role of government is pretty accurate.
I would.............................
the days of black and white tv didn't allow people to look their best but.............
she's a HOTTIE and yes I wood.......if it's okay with my wife.......
Great videos
Mike got his ass handed to him by logic.
But on a side note ayn has really shifty eyes.
Stan
Ayn Rand would have dismissed Stan's very existence as the moron he is. She grew up in the Soviet Union and learned the lesson's of socialism the hard way. Stupid people should not be allowed to comment in these places...Stan..that's you.
Life Mission Statement
I pulled out what I will now consider my life mission statement from that interview. Long live Ayn Rand! "My morality is based on mans life as a standard of value. And since mans mind is his basic means of survival, I hold that if man wants to live on earth and to live as a human being, he has to hold reason as an absolute. By which I mean, that he has to hold reason as his only guide to action and that he must live by the independent judgment of his own mind; that his highest moral purpose is the achievement of his own happiness and that he must not force other people nor accept their right to force him, that each man must live as an end in himself and follow his own rational self-interests."
Morality
One issues I always take is this false idea that morality is seperate from the religious base that created it. Morality as we know it today grew from our Judeo-Chritian heritage. They is NO reason-based morality.
She is incorrect that that our morality is based on sacriface to others. It is based on understand and honor to God (I used God, intentionally) from that we can serve our fellow man or ourselves. Her ideas of economic freedom and free will are very valid and but to remove historicaly Judeo-Christian ethics and morally is not just wrong but dangerous.
Wallace Interview
Wallace is patronizing her. Especially when he falls back on the "Good-Hearted Industrialist", but overall, he let's her have her say. I thought that the interview was pretty good overall. My footnote- Ayn never says you can't be a "good-hearted" person, just that government thuggery should not be used to steal wealth from other people. Adam Smith economics will always get a thumbs-up from me.
Ayn was right
While strict Objectivism is hard to fathom for many people, the fact is, it has never been tried. Ayn was prophetic in her books and predictions for this country. She would absolutely be disgusted with what we have become.
Why people still don't "get" it
The bad news: Neal has it right. Our biggest problem in this country is lack of education. I'm afraid that until that is fixed there is little hope.
The good news: there is a *little* hope. Objectivism and libertarianism has spread; more importantly some of their fundamental principles have spread and are talked about in the media and among groups like ours, here.
I just don't know if it's enough. History shows that if we cannot get back to governing according to our constitution, there will be tyranny followed by the government being overthrown from within or without as it eventually becomes too weak to sustain itself. If we can get back to our founding principles, the future is less certain, but certainly better than the road we're on.
Axeman:
Ayn was a refugee from Russia, not western Europe. ...which only reinforces your point.
don't go ...............................
you people need to stay on topic today. y'sterday you were talkin' reliegon n' stuff........
Lazy Libs
For those of you lazy libs here is a bio from the Ayn Rand Institute. http://www.aynrand.org/site/PageServer?pagename=about_ayn_rand_aynrand_biography
Typical of a troll to attack her appearance.
Those were amazing!
And all she is advocating is a return to our constitution! Self sufficiency.
Love it! We have enabled for too many centuries all at the point of an IRS gun.
hey Stan
Before you go shooting your mouth off about Ayn, check this out http://activerain.com/blogsview/744417/Why-Most-Men-Are-Republicans
Wallace
Do you think Mike or anyone of his fellow so called journalist would ever go after Obama the way he went after Ayn?
Ayn Rand
Did anyone ever see Ayn and William F. Buckley, Jr. together in the same room at the same time? All kidding aside, two of the great thinkers of the last century.
Objective Being the Point
I really admire her *rational* and calm *objective* demeanor as she presents what she knows to be controversial ideas. When viewed through the eyes of logic, she does put forth some arguments which I find difficult to counter. I'd not seen this before; thanks for sharing!
Separation
"Separation of Economics and State"
Now that is Gold! She predicted tyranny of collectivism based on the path currently taken at the time. Interesting.
@frank
sorry, frank. these were brought to my attention through another source.
Rand & Stan
Stan, she actually had to live under the same type of government you lefties are trying so hard to create. If she looks beat up and hates socialists like yourself, that's understandable.
Nice Stan
Let's see - a woman who, by her accent, is probably from a western European nation has bad teeth and doesn't look good with pancake makeup on tv in '59. I think I've captured your thoughts quite well.
So, what you're saying is: it isn't the quality of the ideas - it's how she looks...
Hmmm... Maybe that is how we ended up with the chain-smoker-in-chief and the hoof-in-mouth in the Whitehouse... As Neal refers to it - the American Idol election.
Come on Stan - I'll loan you my Mr. Rogers thinking sweater so you can actually have a coherent thought if you'd like.

all i can say is wow!
Ayn Rand
She is absolutely right!! Government is the problem. If left up to people for their own self interest, this world would be a better place. Long Live Ayn Rand!!!
Stan
Your ignorance, bigotry and prejudice are showing. Can't discuss the issues and ideas she presents, so you attack her appearance. So typical.
Stan Trollble
Of course, if you knew anything about Rand or even watched the videos, you would know Rand was neither a Republican nor a Democrat. She says as much towards the end of part two. Both parties support some form of socialism.
Freedom Party
If you like Rand (and Boortz), check out Paul McKeever on Youtube as well. He's the candidate for the Canadian Freedom Party. He's an actual Objectivist candidate.
Guess she thinks dentists are socialists
them and people who sell make up. Republicans can have this woman
Ayn Rand
Which comes first: Moonbat denial/hysteria or chirping crickets?
No Credibility
Rand was a smoker, which means she was a stupid, ignorant addict. Right Neal?
I don't know why you would want us to listen to one word she says.
Not even a shout-out for me pointing this out to you a month ago?
Ginsberg
Today I heard that she thought Medicare would take care of abortions, for population control of "less than desirables". Same thought process as the founder of Planned Parenthood. Rand called them out for what they were, which is why her contemporaries never cared for her.
No improvement with age...
Mike Wallace just never grew up.... still a socialist at 80... must be something wrong with his mind.
Ayn Rand.
She's right. I agree with her basic philosphy. Not all of it, but enough to understand.
Predictor of things to come!
Mike Wallace clearly does not have the intellectual capacity to keep up with Rand.
