DEMOCRATS AND GUN CONTROL

There is an amendment coming to the House floor that is dividing some Democrats. It has to do with gun control. I believe the amendment is sponsored by John Thune and it is to be included on the Defense authorization bill. The amendment would allow licensed gun owners to transport their concealed weapons across state lines.

Listen to some of these Democrats. Here is some of the reasoning as to why they oppose it.

Rep. Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, asks, "Why would we want to walk the streets wondering, 'Who has a gun in their pockets?'" Yes, folks. This is really why Robert Menendez opposes this amendment .. because he is worried that people will walk the streets and wonder who has a gun. Tell you what .. in certain parts of Atlanta you just ASSUME that the other person is carrying a gun ... most illegally.

Diane Feinstein of California says that the amendment is "reckless," "irresponsible" and ... get this .. "a major violation of state rights." Wow, did we just have a Democrat express concern for states' rights? But .. you know what? Feinstein has a point. There is an argument that states should be able to enforce their own carry permit laws. Perhaps the Republicans ought to just focus on carry rights while transiting a state.

What others are saying

  • Amen Scooter
If my TX CHL isn't valid in Massachusetts, then Barney Frank's Massachusetts gay marriage license shouldn't be valid in TX.
  • what ammendment? why?
There is no need for any amendment giving gun-owners the "right" to transport their concealed weapons across state lines: That right already exists! Codifying it in a separate law does nothing other than lessening the strength of the existing right.
  • A NOTE TO REP MENENDEZ...
I would be more concerned with whom does not carry a gun, due to the fact that it is those moonbats whom will need the protection when the police decide that it was a false alarm and decide to not bother showing up.rock out with youre glock out..
  • state of tennessee's concealed carry law &Tenncare program
tennessee has had a concealed carry permit available for years now with no record of a crime being commited by any holders of said permits, although one of the states democrate senators(named Ford I believe)was charged and arrested for brandishing and firing a weapon at other drivers he speed down the interstate hiway. He DID NOT have a carry permit and of course it was all swept under a rug....
Tennessee also has a single payer health care program so you don't have to look to Canada or even Mass. to see what a cluster f#@k is. TENNCARE SPENT OVER $6 MILLION ON 15,000 "PATIENTS" ENROLLED WHO WERE DEAD. IT HAD ANOTHER 24,000 ENROLLED WHO LIVED OUT OF STATE. This is what you get from gov. run healthcare.

  • Gwinnett County?
Who's gonna guard Gwinnett Place? I mean guard you against the law abiding patrons?????
  • We'll need them now...
Gwinnett County has to let some officers and firefighters go( so says Charlie Bannister...). What do we do to pick up the slack? I'm for the second amendment but there are some folks I don't want to see holding a weapon. These same people can't read road signs, how are they gonna shoot straight? And fighting fires...oh man!
  • @Stan's #1 Fan
You wrote: "10 out of 9 gun owners" and "our new collectivist mentality"

ROTFLMAO....a freakin' amazing. OMG, this guy's funny. Are you sure you don't write for Keith Olbermann's show?
  • Stan
has a problem with his "gun" going off every time he cleans it in the shower.
  • J.R.C.
I'll have you know I DRIPPED in the last election and will DRIP in the next. We can't DRIP until election time. Tell butt to hang onto his britches.
    (butt, is that YOU???)
  • Take my wife, please.
I wonder if states that don't wish to honor out=of-state carry permits feel the same way about marriage licenses?
  • No Brad, he said
    10 out of 9. That's even better!
  • Definition of Irony

  • Average Republican
You wanna make some intelligent points?
  • Infringements....
Carry permits are unconstitutional, I carry my gun with me anywhere, anytime. If anybody has a problem with that, worst case scenario, I can shoot them.
  • Senate Votes NO on Bill of Rights
The US Senate voted the amendment down puting yet another gapping hole in our Bill of Rights. It seems that all of those Democrat "advocates of minority rights" turned their backs on those they claim to serve.

"The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities." Ayn Rand
  • Stan Fan -- YOU make me Laugh AGAIN.
Stan, You made me laugh with that 9 out of 10 gun owners admit to discharging their weapons while cleaning!! That is just too funny. I have owned firearms since I was 10, I am now 41 and have never done that. Nor do I know anyone that has, in my 31 years.

Keep the funnys coming. Although it is sad that you can not add anything productive to ANY CONVERSATION.
  • Depend on the cops?
There are more than 5 million FBI Certified Law Abiding CWP holders across this nation. They all seem to understand that in a threatening situation, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away!
  • Always
Liberals are always against gun rights...until something happens to them. Then they are the first in line to buy one.
  • What ever happened to that thing we called the Constitution?
Laughing is absolutely right. The whole purpose of the "full faith and credit" clause (Article IV, section 1)was to prevent this patchwork mess (This is also the argument for the marriage amendment). These superfluous reciprocity laws between states do nothing but undermine the authority of the Constitution and add to the ignorance of the dumb masses. I'm all for licensed concealed carry holders to take their weapons across state lines. We do not need another law allowing them to do what the Constitution already allows. We need laws removed that usurp our already existing Constitutional rights.
  • I need a gun
Guns are definitely useful in today's society for the average republican

    (1) I went to catholic school, and the priest was too busy w/ the kindergartners to help me find the way to Publix so I have to hunt

    (2) I am afraid Luxembourg is going to attack the US so I need it when this goes down

    (3) Yes everytime a kid blows his brains out w/ his parents gun, the parents always say it was in a safe place. But why protect my kids from being safe, a 200+ year old document says that people in the federal(not state) controlled areas have the right to bear arms

    (4) I need a gun for street cred at the klan meetings

    (5) There are no crimes involving guns

    (6) Jesus owned a bunch of guns.
  • Oath-Keepers
They want to make sure you don't lose your gun rights. And many other rights.

  • stand tall and straight....
I may not be the brightest bulb in the lamp however I ain't stoopid either.

many of you have arguements with each other 'cuz that's what peeple do...but nuttin' gets done here. my buddy butt neckid did his duty in the 60's and 70's.....he went to canada!!!!! I'm jokin'. he is a decorated veteran, and he did my wife's livingroom, another joke...sorry shipmate!!!!

some of you may have noticed that he is pissed off......can't say I blame him. he had to do something that he hates more than osamabama......he went out of business and a bunch of people were put out of work.....it's killin' him.

he really wants to see the revolution get started so some of the america he chose to defend dosen't disappear...he will follow a good leader and supply a lot of fire power while he's at it....

so make sure you hold on to your rights, all of them! 'cuz if you let one go they all go....

politicians? we don't need no stinking politicians...

you must have noticed he don't use DRIP anymore.....he tried but ya'll dint lissen....
  • Guns and Cars and Licenses
    To keep this in perspective:

How many deaths do we see each year from car crashes?
How many murders are committed each year? How many of those murders include guns? How many of those guns were concealed weapons?
Has there ever been a murder conviction for a licensed carry and conceal? (and if so, what percentage of C&C does this represent and what percentage of the gun deaths does this represent)

As I understand this law, it would require licensed C&C to follow laws in whatever states they are carrying a concealed weapon. This may be similar to being able to drive a car in multiple states. (See deaths from car crashes, which I believe far outnumber deaths from guns)

NOTE: When carrying a weapon is illegal only the criminals have guns. (by definition, heh)
  • Mendenez Comment
I mean the guy is from New Jersey so the question Mendenez should ask is when he walks the streets, WHO DOES NOT HAVE GUN??
  • where is that..........................................
quick go get the tranqualizer darts.............damifino is havein' a fit........
  • Stan's Stand
I heard NYC Mayor Bloomberg's comment on this issue. He should be reminded that his 40,000 cops have accidently shot far more innocent victims than all of our nation's 5,000,000+ FBI certified law abiding concealed carry licensees combined.

Besides, WHEN SECONDS COUNT... BLOOMBERG'S POLICE ARE ONLY MINUTES AWAY!
  • Read the amendment
Did anyone, including Neal, read this amendment? It doesn't say every state has to respect the CCW laws in which the individual is licensed. If I'm licensed to carry a firearm in Florida, this amendment won't allow me to carry in Illinois...I still have to respect the state laws.

It's just like driver's license. Just because I have a license from Texas and can drive with an open beer doesn't mean I can do the same in Utah.
  • CCW
I would never carry a "gun" in my pocket. I carry my pistol in a IWB holster or shoulder holster when I don't have one in a paddle. As far as I know, only 2 states don't recognize my state's CCW permit. I'm willing to pay the fine in those states, and only carrry my cheaper weapon.
  • Gun Control
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, ...
The second amendment of the Constitution states that US citizens have the right to bear arms. This supercedes staes rights.
  • Gun rights and numbers
Gun ownership..my right..and Im going to do it.

    I love the ridiculous arguments...
Guns kill people..so we need to ban guns based on these ridiculous numbers the Left posts. So lets take this a RIDICULOUS step further...
If you look at the crime figures from
    http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/homicide/race.htm
You'll see that black men are the problem, leading the weapons and homicide categories.
So you see, the solution is simple...guns are fine...ban black men...BUT only black men between 18 and 26. Geez!!

In addition to the ridiculous numbers the Left post and use..
750,000 people dying each year from guns, several million from poor health care, more millions from global warming, and even more from poverty...Its absolutely amazing we have a population at all !!!

The Federal Government needs to stay in it's own swim lane..and stop involving themselves in our everyday lives...They are F-ing it up.
  • other rights are universally recognized, why not the right to carry
You have a driver's license issued by your state, every other state has to honor that license and allow you to drive in their state. Why shouldn't a state be required to honor your CWP and allow you to carry in their state in accordance with their CCW laws. By the way, this amendment exempts IL and WI since they do not allow their citizen's the right to carry a concealed weapon.
  • luv your spirit......................................
ARMED........I love your spirit but you and I are not going to be able to withstand the take over......

many of our fellow citizens are armed to the teeth, what the hell does that mean anyway, and yet tyranny is on the way.

we haven't lost our "RIGHTS"......yet but some of them are a lil' hard to defend these days......

some folks don't want to let free citizens be free.....when the crap hits the fan who do they turn to?? those gun totin' bible carrying red neck sharp shootin' sum bitches they wanted to disarm......kinda like the french in the 40's.........

may you live long and prosper.....and shoot straight.....
  • "allow licensed gun owners "
    Simple enough.
If a state doesn't recognize my CCW, then when Mr. Poooleeecccman comes to my State, then I don't recognize his position as a LEO and he will be arrested for being illegally alarmed. Here ya' go:
When you come to my State, I don't recognize your marriage license.
When you come to my state, I don't recognize your drivers license and arrest you for driving without a license.
When you come to my State, I don't recognize you as an elected official from another state.
So on, and so on, and so ...
If we are to recognize licenses across state lines then there is no reason to ignore some. Those of us legally armed with CCW's are not criminals.
The real criminals are you who try to deny us our rights under the Constitution. If we cannot defend ourselves and family ... who will? The Police are only traffic cops and show up AFTER you have been robbed, raped, shot at, mugged, beat up ...
Those who are afraid of legally armed citizens are communists.
  • Incorporation of 2nd Amendment
It all comes down to SCOTUS ruling that the 2nd Amendment is Incorporated, meaning State's cannot make their own gun laws that would be in violation of the 2nd Amendment. While Heller V. DC decided gun ownership was an individual right it did not declare anything regarding Incorporation of the 2nd Amendment. Eventually this will be decided.
  • concealed carry
Anyone wearing clothes could be carrying a weapon. But those who are licensed have passed many background checks. But some states, such as New York [and NYC] or California won't honor my Kansas license. This law will let me approach the rights the Supreme Court said we had in Dred Scott [pg 24].
Passage of this law may prompt Illinois and Wisconsin to pass a concealed carry law, now when I visit my hometown I must be disarmed at the Mississippi River. Yet Illinois has a terrible crime problem because the criminals don't care about a gun law.
  • How about this quote from Chuck Schumer:

"Right now you walk down the streets in New York or Nassau County or Westchester County, you can have the solace of knowing that if someone has a gun on them, they've gone through a rigorous back-ground check," Schumer said at a Sunday news conference that was reported in USA Today.

Glad to know the criminals are getting the background checks.
  • 2nd Amendment
I agree with Stan. West Virginia is real nice.

    Stan, you should come visit!!
  • gun control
Why are the States even able to make conditions about gun carry? This is a Federal issue, specifically mentioned in the Amendments. The Feds poke their nose into every issue under the Sun, but defer to the States on this? Someone help me understand, what States rights issue is here. When the States can guarantee my safety, I won't have to carry. Untill then I will take that responsibility into my own hands. Remember, when help is only "minutes" away, my gun is at hand.
  • gun control.
gun control is a steady hand and a clear target.
  • Stan's #1 Fan
That does it!! Resistance is futile..Stan's#1 has got me rollin on the floor,I shot my coffee out my nose.. I've got to be,NO wait, we ALL have to be "STAN'S #1 FAN'S,#1 FANS!"
  • Stan's #1 Fan
Nice try. The number one death caused by accident in America is "car crashes". This is around 40,000 to 45,000 per year. Accidental death caused by firearm discharge is around 1,500 and is ranked number 7. Just so you can see the rankings.
    10 - Machinery caused deaths - 350
    9 - Medical Surgical complications - 500
    8 - Poison by Gas - 700
    6 - Suffocation - 3,300
    5 - Fire+burns - 3,700
    4 - Drowning - 4,000
    3 - Poisoning by solid or liquid - 8,600
    2 - Falls - 14,900
  • reciprocity vote in the senate
How hilarious it is to hear the collectivists fuss about state’s rights! Since when did they ever care for state’s rights? They just want to keep you disarmed. This is all about power and keeping the sheep humble and helpless. Don’t be fooled by state’s rights arguments!

And to you sheep out there: If you want to remain a ward of the state – fine. Just don’t try to force me to join you. And laws or no laws, a few Americans still understand the concept of inalienable rights. I and millions like me have been pushed as far we we’re going to be pushed. Wanna save lives? Then leave gun owners the hell alone!

  • Why can't leftists figure it out?
Criminals and governments,(don't flame me too much for being redundant and repeating myself) LOVE IT when Law-abiding citizens are disarmed.

Put yourself in the position of a criminal or tyrannical government – wouldn't you Rather know that your intended victim is unarmed?

Maybe you leftist cans explain why most mass shootings occur in those idiotic “Gun-free” (self-defense restriction) zones?
If guns cause these shootings and crime, why don't you here about all kinds of these incidents at gun shows and gun stores?

Let's try a basic question for you leftists: Do you have the right to defend yourself?
  • Police? Hell!
Most liberals hate the police as much as they hate George W. The police are, today, unable to perform their job adequately. So who are we supposed to turn to for protection?
  • However...
Self-protection from wrong-doers is not a concern of the government and the liberals trying to push gun control.

Stalin understood that an unarmed populace was easy to subdue. Since so many leftists yearn for a soft--maybe-- socialism (as is detailed in these forums daily), gun control only makes sense. We cannot resist tyranny if we are unarmed.

Government control will never be fully enforced on the citizens of a country until their weapons have been removed.
  • Diane Feinstein calling the kettle black?
"Reckless" and "irresponsible" from one who helped drive California's "budget shortfall" to 4X more than most states entire budget.WHY DOES ANYONE LISTEN TO THESE IDIOTS LET ALONE KEEP RE-ELECTING THEM!
  • Gun control
I always wonder "who has a gun in their pocket" when I go anywhere.

That's why I keep one in mine so I can be sure anybody with one in their pocket who intends harm are unable to use theirs AGAINST ME.

This is simply another issue among many that liberals will never understand or allow themselves to understand.

Common sense would allow that somebody who has spent the time and money having their name, weapon, and license registered with the government would not then take that gun to start committing crimes (inevitable psychopaths excluded, of course).

It's the lovely gentlemen with Saturday night specials who are the danger to society, and very rarely can a person without a gun overcome a person with a gun...
  • 2nd Amendment
I travel at times to different states to compete with 50bmg rifles, I carry a handgun with me wherever I go. I have had some hairy moments at early hours in the morning stopping for whatever.
Dont need a politician to tell me whats best for my safety when they are surrounded by armed protecters everywhere they go.
    HAVE A GOOD DAY
    Semper FI
  • This is what the police are for
I agree with Stan. Just because some neocons live in a persistent state of fear it would not give them the right to endanger and kill everyone else. In America, 725,000 people die every year from accidental gun discharges and 10 out of 9 gun owners admit to accidentally triggering their weapons while cleaning them. This is why we have the police and nonlethal forms of self defense like pepper spray, and hell, even long sticks! Ever been wacked by a broom handle or an umbrella? The individual empowerment a gun provides just doesn't fit in with the spirit of our new collectivist mentality. Why don't you just go live in West Virginia with all the hicks if you love guns so much.
  • C.C. Permit
My state is one of 22 that reciprocate with each other. My permit is honored in all of them. As much as I agree with the spirit of this amendment I just can't agree with the federal government telling a state their policy on gun control. If it were to pass I wouldn't lose much sleep. California would have to recognise my right to carry a concealed weapon.
  • Bill of Rights
The first 10 amendments are individual rights and should not be overridden by any state or federal laws. It's like having a different definition of freedom of speech in Alabama than in New Jersey.
  • 2nd Amendment
As a young boy, I read a scifi novel titled "The Weapon Shops of Isher" by A. E. van Vogt. They (the weapon shops) were an integral part of the society of that time line and had historically preserved the right "to keep & bear arms" for 1000 years. That story was written in 1951.

I cannot elaborate on important it is to be armed or how our "right-wing terrorist" founding fathers felt about being unarmed in the European society of the 15th, 16th, 17th, & early 18th centuries. I have a concealed-carry permit and go to the range on a regular basis. We permit holders are NOT the problem and we go a long way to making the streets safer because criminals have no clue who is armed.
  • Robert Menendez is an idiot
The point of concealed carry is so that the criminals do not know who has a firearm or not. They are less willing to attack someone if there is a high probability of getting hurt.

This is just common sense. Who do you think a criminal would most likely attack: a person wearing a brady campaign t-shirt, or some one wearing a Smith and Wesson t-shirt?

  • States Rights
Yes, the states rights issue troubles me a bit, as well. There is the "full faith and credit" provision... should that apply to concealed carry permits? If so, then this law can be seen as a way to enforce that.
  • 2nd Amendment and State rights
I can't express myself as eloquently as BN, but this is like saying you can't take your 1st Amendment rights across State lines. The 2nd Amendment is an "Individual" right protected by the Constitution, and cannot be trumped by State law
  • Most states
...with CCW have reciprocity with other CCW states and especially those sharing state lines.
    Check here: http://www.ccrkba.org/reciprocity.html

and you can see just how well we already have this at the States level. It would be nice if the Fed Guv passed legislation saying that it will never infringe on the individual right to keep and bear arms; sort of like that pesky Second Amendment thing that so many like to ignore or redefine.
  • Feds and Gun Control
The Feds have apparently "dropped the hammer" on TN telling the state that the federal govt supercedes the state on gun issues. Let this fight begin.
